Safety devices on the product

WARNING: Read the warning instructionsthat follow before you use the product.

In this section the product’s safety features and theirfunction are explained. For inspection and maintenancesee instructions under the heading Examination, maintenance and service of the product's safetyequipment on page 23. See instructions under theheading Product overview 565/572XP/572XPG on page2 to find where these parts are located on your product.

The life span of the machine can be reduced and therisk of accidents can increase if product maintenance isnot carried out correctly and if service and/or repairs arenot carried out professionally. If you need furtherinformation please contact your nearest servicing dealer.

WARNING: Never use a product withdefective safety components. Safetyequipment must be inspected andmaintained. See instructions under theheading Examination, maintenance andservice of the product's safety equipment onpage 23. If your machine does not pass allthe checks, take the chainsaw to a servicingdealer for repair.

Chain brake and front hand guard

Your chainsaw is equipped with a chain brake that isdesigned to stop the saw chain if you get a kickback. The chain brake reduces the risk of accidents, but onlyyou can prevent them.

WARNING: Avoid situations where there is arisk of kickback. Take care when using yourchainsaw and make sure the kickback zoneof the guide bar never touches any object.

The chain brake (A) can either be activated manually (byyour left hand) or automatically by the inertia releasemechanism.

The brake is engaged when the front hand guard (B) ispushed forwards.

A

B

This movement activates a spring-loaded mechanismthat tightens the brake band (C) around the engine drivesystem (D) (clutch drum).

C D

The front hand guard is not designed solely to activatethe chain brake. Another important feature is that itreduces the risk of your left hand hitting the saw chain ifyou lose grip of the front handle.

The chain brake must be engaged when the chainsaw isstarted to prevent the saw chain from rotating.

Use the chain brake as a ”parking brake” when startingand when moving over short distances, to reduce the

risk of moving chain accidentally hitting your leg oranyone or anything close by.

To release the chain brake pull the front hand guardbackwards, towards the front handle.

Kickback can be very sudden and violent. Mostkickbacks are minor and do not always activate thechain brake. If this happens you should hold thechainsaw firmly and not let go.

The way the chain brake is activated, either manually orautomatically by the inertia release mechanism, depends on the force of the kickback and the position ofthe chainsaw in relation to the object that the kickbackzone of the guide bar strikes. If you get a violentkickback while the kickback zone of the guide bar isfarthest away from you the chain brake is designed to beactivated by the inertia in the kickback direction.

If the kickback is less violent or the kickback zone of theguide bar is closer to you the saw chain brake will beactivated manually by the movement of your left hand.

In the felling position the left hand is in a position thatmakes manual activation of the chain brake impossible. With this type of grip, that is when the left hand is placedso that it cannot affect the movement of the front hand

guard, the chain brake can only be activated by theinertia action.

Common questions about kickback

• Will my hand always activate the chain brake duringa kickback?

No. It takes a certain force to move the hand guardforward. If your hand only lightly touches the fronthand guard or slips over it, the force may not beenough to trigger the chain brake. You should alsomaintain a firm grip of the chainsaw handles whileworking. If you do and experience a kickback, yourhand may never leave the front handle and will notactivate the chain brake, or the chain brake will onlyactivate after the chainsaw has swung around aconsiderable distance. In such instances, the chainbrake might not have enough time to stop the sawchain before it touches you. There are also certainpositions in which your hand cannot reach the fronthand guard to activate the chain brake; for example, when the saw chain is held in felling position.

• Will my inertia activated chain brake always activateduring kickback in the event of a kickback?

No. First, your brake must be in working order.Testing the brake is simple, see instructions underthe heading Examination, maintenance and serviceof the product's safety equipment on page 23. Werecommend you do this before you begin each worksession. Second, the kickback must be strongenough to activate the chain brake. If the chainbrake is too sensitive it would activate all the time, which would be a nuisance.

• Will my chain brake always protect me from injury inthe event of a kickback?

No. First, the chain brake must be in working orderto provide the intended protection. Second, it mustbe activated during the kickback as described aboveto stop the saw chain. Third, the chain brake may beactivated but if the guide bar is too close to you thebrake might not have enough time to slow down andstop the saw chain before the chainsaw hits you.

WARNING: Only you and proper workingtechnique can eliminate kickback and itsdangers.

Throttle trigger lockout

The throttle trigger lockout is designed to preventaccidental operation of the throttle trigger. When youpress the throttle trigger lockout down (A) (in examplewhen you grasp the handle) it releases the throttletrigger (B). When you let go of the handle, the throttletrigger and the throttle trigger lockout both return to theirdefault positions. This design locks the throttle trigger atidle setting.

A

B

Chain catcher

The chain catcher is designed to catch the chain if itsnaps or jumps off. This should not happen if the chainis properly tensioned (see instructions under theheading To tension the saw chain on page 30) and ifthe bar and chain are properly serviced and maintained(see instructions under the heading Maintenance onpage 23).

Right hand guard

Apart from protecting your hand if the chain jumps orsnaps, the right hand guard stops branches and twigsfrom interfering with your grip on the rear handle.

Vibration damping system

Your product is equipped with a vibration dampingsystem that is designed to minimize vibration and makeoperation easier. The product′s vibration dampingsystem reduces the transfer of vibration between theengine unit/cutting equipment and the product′s handle

unit. The body of the chainsaw, including the cuttingequipment, is insulated from the handles by vibrationdamping units.

Cutting hardwoods (most broadleaf trees) creates morevibration than cutting softwoods (most conifers). Cuttingwith cutting equipment that is blunt or faulty (wrong typeor badly sharpened) will increase the vibration level.

WARNING: Overexposure to vibration canlead to circulatory damage or nerve damagein people who have impaired circulation.Contact your doctor if you experiencesymptoms of overexposure to vibration.Such symptoms include numbness, loss offeeling, tingling, pricking, pain, loss ofstrength, changes in skin colour or condition. These symptoms normally appear in thefingers, hands or wrists. These symptomsmay be increased in cold temperatures.

Start/stop switch

Use the start/stop switch to switch off the engine.

Muffler

The muffler is designed to keep noise levels to aminimum and to direct exhaust fumes away from theuser.

WARNING: The exhaust fumes from theengine are hot and may contain sparkswhich can start a fire. Never start themachine indoors or near combustiblematerial!

In areas with a hot, dry climate there is a high risk offires. These areas are sometimes subject to government

rules requiring among other things the muffler must beequipped with an approved type of spark arrestor mesh.

WARNING: The muffler gets very hot duringand after use. This also applies during idling.Be aware of the fire hazard, especially whenworking near flammable substances and/orvapours.

WARNING: Never use a saw without amuffler, or with a damaged muffler. Adamaged muffler may substantially increasethe noise level and the fire hazard. Keep firefighting equipment handy. If a spark arrestorscreen is required in your area, never usethe saw without or with a broken sparkarrestor screen.

Fuel safety

WARNING: Read the warning instructionsthat follow before you use the product.

• Make sure there is plenty of ventilation whenrefuelling or mixing fuel (petrol and two-stroke oil).

• Fuel and fuel vapour are highly flammable and cancause serious injury when inhaled or allowed tocome in contact with the skin. For this reasonobserve caution when handling fuel and make surethere is adequate ventilation.

• Take care when handling fuel and chain oil. Beaware of the risks of fire, explosion and thoseassociated with inhalation.

• Do not smoke and do not place any hot objects inthe vicinity of fuel.

• Always stop the engine and let it cool for a fewminutes before refuelling.

• When refuelling, open the fuel cap slowly so that anyexcess pressure is released gently.

• Tighten the fuel cap carefully after refuelling.• Never refuel the machine while the engine is

running.

• Always move the product at least 3 m (10 ft) awayfrom the refuelling area and source before starting.

After refuelling, there are some situations where youmust never start the product:

• If you have spilled fuel or chain oil on the product.Wipe off the spillage and allow remaining fuel toevaporate.

• If you have spilled fuel on yourself or on yourclothes. Change your clothes and wash any part ofyour body that has come in contact with fuel. Usesoap and water.

• If the product leaks fuel. Regularly do a check forleaks from the fuel cap and fuel lines.

Safety instructions for maintenanceCutting equipmentThis section describes how to choose and maintain yourcutting equipment in order to:

• Reduce the risk of kickback.• Reduce the risk of the saw chain breaking or

jumping off the bar.• Obtain optimal cutting performance.• Extend the life of cutting equipment.• Avoid increasing vibration levels.

WARNING: Read the warning instructionsthat follow before you use the product.

Chain oilAll Husqvarna chainsaws have an automatic chainlubrication system. On some models the oil flow is alsoadjustable.

Chain oil must show good adherence to the saw chainand also keep its flow characteristics during warmsummer and cold winter weather.

The chain oil from Husqvarna has a vegetable oil baseand is also biodegradable. We recommend you to use ofour chain oil for maximum saw chain life and to minimiseenvironmental damage. If this chain oil is not available,we recommend you to use a standard chain oil.

The fuel runs out before the chain oil from the two tanks. This is a safety feature and it is necessary that youfollow the requirements below:

• Use an oil of the right grade (suitable viscosityrange) to agree with the air temperature. If the oil istoo thin it will run out before the fuel. In temperaturesbelow 0°C (32°F) some oils become too viscous. This can cause the oil pump to overload and result indamage to the oil pump components.

• Adjust the carburetor as recommended. A leanmixture causes the chain oil tank to empty before thefuel tank.

• Use the recommended cutting equipment. A guidebar that is too long will use more chain oil.

WARNING: Do not use waste oil! Waste oilis dangerous to you and the environment.Waste oil also causes damage to the oilpump, the guide bar and the saw chain.

WARNING: Deficiente lubrication of thecutting equipment can cause the saw chainto break, which can cause serious injury ordeath.

Consult your servicing dealer when you select a chainoil.

To fill the fuel tank1. Clean the area around the fuel tank cap.2. Shake the container and make sure that the fuel is

fully mixed.

3. Fill the fuel tank and the chain oil tank at the sametime. The capacities of the chain oil tank and fueltank are carefully correlated.

4. Tighten the fuel tank cap carefully.5. Move the product 3 m (10 ft) or more away from the

refueling area and source before starting.

CAUTION: Contamination in the tankscauses malfunction. Clean the fuel tank andchain oil tank regularly and replace the fuelfilter one time a year or more.

Basic cutting techniqueBelow we describe some general terms that areapplicable to basic cutting technique:

• To cut from above = To cut on the pull stroke. Thismeans that the saw chain pulls through the tree andthat the chainsaw body lies on the trunk when youcut. To cut on the pull stroke gives the operator

better control of the chainsaw and the position of thekickback zone.

• To cut from below = To cut on the push stroke. Thismeans that the saw chain tries to push the chainsawagainst the operator.

WARNING: Be careful when you cut withthe top edge of the guide bar. If the sawchain gets caught in the trunk, thechainsaw can be pushed against you.Unless you prevent this force there is arisk that the only the kickback zone ofthe guide bar touches the tree, which willlead to a kickback.

• Cutting = General term for cutting through wood.• Limbing = Cutting branches off a felled tree.• Splitting = When the object you are cutting breaks off

before the cut is complete.

What is kickback?

WARNING: Kickback can happen verysuddenly and violently; kicking thechainsaw, guide bar and saw chain back atthe user. If this happens when the saw chainis moving it can cause very serious, evenfatal injuries. It is vital you understand what

16 140 - 001 - 19.01.2018

Page 17: OM, Husqvarna, 565, 572XP, 572XPG, 2018-02, CHAIN …editor-g3.gws.husqvarna.com/ddoc/HUSO/HUSO2018... · Throttle trigger lockout 4. Rear handle 5. Information and warning decal

causes kickback and that you can avoid it bytaking care and using the correct workingtechnique. By being prepared you reducethe risk.

The word kickback is used to describe the suddenreaction that causes the chainsaw and guide bar to jumpoff an object when the upper quadrant of the tip of thebar, known as the kickback zone, touches an object.

Kickback always occurs in the cutting plane of the guidebar. Normally the chainsaw and guide bar are thrownbackwards and upwards towards the user. However, thechainsaw may move in a different direction dependingon the way it was being used when the kickback zone ofthe guide bar touched the object.

Kickback only occurs if the kickback zone of the guidebar touches an object.

To consider before making a cut• Make sure to always use full throttle when cutting!• Make sure to reduce the speed to idle after every

cut.

CAUTION: Running the engine for toolong at full throttle without any load, forinstance without any resistance from thesaw chain during cutting, can lead toserious engine damage.

• Be careful so that the cutting equipment does notjam in the cut. Two factors decide whether the sawchain will jam or the object that you are cutting willsplit: the first is how the object is supported beforeand after cutting, and the second is whether it is intension.

WARNING: If the saw chain jams in thecut: Stop the engine! Don’t try to pull thechainsaw free. If you do you may beinjured by the saw chain when thechainsaw suddenly breaks free. Use alever to open up the cut and free thechainsaw.

• Make sure the object you are cutting will not split.

• Make sure the saw chain will not strike the ground orany other object during or after cutting.

• Consider whether there is a risk of kickback.

140 - 001 - 19.01.2018 17

Page 18: OM, Husqvarna, 565, 572XP, 572XPG, 2018-02, CHAIN …editor-g3.gws.husqvarna.com/ddoc/HUSO/HUSO2018... · Throttle trigger lockout 4. Rear handle 5. Information and warning decal

• Examine if the conditions and surrounding terrainaffect how safely you can stand and move aboutsafely. Check the area around you for possibleobstacles such as roots, rocks, branches, ditchesetcetera. Take great care when working on slopingground.

In most cases you can avoid problems by cutting in twostages; from the top and from the bottom. You need tosupport the object so that it will not trap the saw chain orsplit during cutting.

To use the limbing techniqueWhen limbing thick branches you should use the sameapproach as for cutting.

1. Make sure that you can stand and move aboutsafely.

2. Cut difficult branches piece by piece.

12

3

WARNING: Take great care whenremoving small branches and avoidcutting bushes, for instance when youcut many small branches at the sametime. Small and light branches can begrabbed by the saw chain and thrownback at you. Even if this does not needto be a danger, you may be surprisedand lose control of the chainsaw whichcan cause serious injury.

3. Work on the left side of the trunk. Work as close aspossible to the chainsaw for maximum control. Ifpossible, let the weight of the chainsaw rest on thetrunk.

WARNING: A majority of kickbackaccidents occur during limbing. Do notuse the kickback zone of the guide bar.Be extremely cautious and avoidcontacting the log, other limbs or objectswith the nose of the guide bar. Beextremely cautious of limbs undertension. They can spring back towardyou and cause loss of control resulting inserious injury.

4. Keep the trunk between you and the chainsaw asyou move along the trunk.

To use the cutting technique1. If you have a pile of logs, remove each log you

attempt to cut from the pile and place it on a sawhorse or runners. Cut every log individually.

WARNING: Never attempt to cut logswhile they are in a pile or when a coupleof logs are lying together. Suchprocedures drastically increase the riskof kickback which can result in a seriousor fatal injury.

2. Remove the cut pieces from the cutting area.

WARNING: If you leave cutting pieces inthe cutting area, you increase the risk forinadvertently getting a kickback, as wellas increasing the risk of losing yourbalance while working.

3. If you cut the log on the ground there is a small riskthat the saw chain will jam or that the object will split. However, there is a risk that the saw chain will touchthe ground when you finish the cut.

a) Cut all the way through the log from above. Avoidletting the saw chain touch the ground as youfinish the cut. Maintain full throttle but beprepared for what might happen.

b) If it is possible, stop cutting about 2/3 of the waythrough the log, turn the log and finish the cutfrom the opposite side.

4. If the log is supported at one end there is a high riskthat it will split.

a) Start by cutting from below (about 1/3 of the waythrough).

b) Finish by cutting from above so that the two cutsmeet.

5. If the log is supported at both ends there is a highrisk that the saw chain will jam.

a) Start by cutting from above (about 1/3 of the waythrough).

b) Finish by cutting from below so that the two cutsmeet.

The tree felling techniqueWARNING: It takes a lot of experience to fella tree. Inexperienced users of chainsawsshould not fell trees. Do not attempt any taskthat you feel unsure of!

Safe distanceThe safe distance between a tree that is to be felled andanyone else working nearby is at least 2 1/2 treelengths.

Make sure that no one else is in this ”risk zone” beforeor during felling.

140 - 001 - 19.01.2018 19

Page 20: OM, Husqvarna, 565, 572XP, 572XPG, 2018-02, CHAIN …editor-g3.gws.husqvarna.com/ddoc/HUSO/HUSO2018... · Throttle trigger lockout 4. Rear handle 5. Information and warning decal

Felling directionThe aim is to fell the tree in a position where you canlimb and cross-cut the log as easily as possible. Youwant it to fall in a location where you can stand andmove about safely.

Once you have decided which way you want the tree tofall you must judge which way the tree would fallnaturally. Several factors affect this:

• Lean of the tree• Bend• Wind direction• Arrangement of branches• Weight of snow• Obstacles within the reach of the tree: for example,

other trees, power lines, roads and buildings.• Look for signs of damage and rot in the stem, this

makes it more probably that the tree will break andstart to fall before you expect it to.

You may find you are forced to let the tree fall in itsnatural direction because it is impossible or dangerousto try to make it fall in the direction you first intended.

Another very important factor, which does not affect thefelling direction but does affect your safety, is to makesure the tree has no damaged or dead branches thatmight break off and hit you during felling.

The main point to avoid is letting the tree fall ontoanother tree. It is very dangerous to remove a trappedtree and there is high accident risk. See instructionsunder the heading To free a badly fallen tree on page22

WARNING: During critical felling operations, hearing protectors should be liftedimmediately when sawing is completed sothat sounds and warning signals can beheard.

To clear the trunk and prepare for your retreat1. Delimb the stem up to shoulder height. Work from

the top down and make sure that the tree is betweenyou and the chainsaw.

2. Remove any undergrowth from the base of the tree.3. Check the area for obstacles such as stones,

branches and holes so that you have a clear path ofretreat when the tree starts to fall. Your path ofretreat should be roughly 135 degrees away from theintended felling direction.

To fell a treeFelling is done with three cuts. First you make thedirectional cuts, which consist of the top cut and thebottom cut, and then you finish with the felling cut. Byplacing these cuts correctly you can control the fellingdirection very accurately.

WARNING: Unless you have special trainingwe advise you not to fell trees with adiameter larger than the bar length of yourchainsaw!

Page 21: OM, Husqvarna, 565, 572XP, 572XPG, 2018-02, CHAIN …editor-g3.gws.husqvarna.com/ddoc/HUSO/HUSO2018... · Throttle trigger lockout 4. Rear handle 5. Information and warning decal

To make the directional cuts

1. Start to make the directional cuts by making the topcut first. Aim with the chainsaw’s felling directionmark (1) toward a goal further forward in the terrain, where you would like the tree to fall (2). Stand on theright-hand side of the tree, behind the chainsaw, andcut with a pull stroke.

2. Make the bottom cut so that it finishes exactly at theend of the top cut.

2

1

The directional cuts should run 1/4 of the diameterthrough the trunk and the angle between the top cut andbottom cut should be 45°.

The line where the two cuts meet is called the directionalcut line. This line should be perfectly horizontal and atright angles (90°) to the chosen felling direction.

To make the felling cut

The felling cut is made from the opposite side of the treeand it must be perfectly horizontal. Stand on the left sideof the tree and cut on the pull stroke.

1. Make the felling cut about 3-5 cm/1.5-2 inches abovethe bottom directional cut.

2. Set the spiked bumper (if one is fitted) just behindthe felling hinge.

3. Use full throttle and advance the saw chain/guidebar slowly into the tree. Make sure that the tree doesnot start to move in the opposite direction to yourintended felling direction.

4. Drive a wedge or breaking bar into the cut as soonas it is deep enough.

5. Finish the felling cut parallel with the directional cutline so that the distance between them is at least1/10 of the trunk diameter. The uncut section of thetrunk is called the felling hinge. The felling hingecontrols the direction that the tree falls in.

WARNING: All control over the fellingdirection is lost if the felling hinge is toonarrow or non-existent, or if thedirectional cuts and felling cut are badlyplaced.

6. When the felling cut and directional cuts arecomplete the tree should start to fall by itself or withthe aid of a felling wedge or breaking bar.

Note: We recommend that you use a bar that is longer than the diameter of the tree, so that you can make the felling cut and directional cuts with single cutting strokes. See instructions under the heading Accessories on page 37 to find out which

lengths of bar are recommended for your chainsaw.

There are methods for felling trees with a diameterlarger than the guide bar length. However thesemethods involve a much greater risk that the kickbackzone of the guide bar will come into contact with thetree.

To free a badly fallen treeIt is very dangerous to remove a trapped tree and thereis a high accident risk. The safest method is to use awinch:

• Tractor-mounted

• Portable

WARNING: Never try to fell a tree that istrapped and never work in the risk zone ofthe hanging trapped tree.

To cut trees and branches that are in tension1. Figure out which side of the tree or branch that is in

tension and where the point of maximum tension is,for instance where it would break if it was bent evenmore.

2. Decide which is the safest way to release the tensionand whether you are able to do it safely

Note: In complicated situations the only safe methodis to put aside your chainsaw and use a winch.

3. Position yourself so that you will be clear of the treeor branch when the tension is released.

4. Make one or more cuts at or near the point ofmaximum tension. Make as many cuts of sufficientdepth as necessary to reduce the tension and makethe tree or branch break at the point of maximumtension.

WARNING: Never cut straight through atree or branch that is in tension.

A treethat is in tension may spring back to itsnormal position before or after being cut.If you position yourself incorrectly ormake the cut in the wrong place the treemay hit you or the product and causeyou to lose control. Both situations cancause serious personal injury.

5. If you must cut across tree/limb, make two to threecuts, one inch apart, one to two inches deep.

6. Continue to cut deeper until tree/limb bends andtension is released.

7. Cut tree/limb from outside the bend, after tensionhas been released.

Sharpening of the saw chainGeneral advice on sharpening the cuttingteethNever use a blunt saw chain. When the saw chain isblunt you have to exert more pressure to force the barthrough the wood and the chips will be very small. If thesaw chain is very blunt it will produce wood powder andno chips or shavings.

A sharp saw chain eats its way through the wood andproduces long, thick chips or shavings.

The cutting part of the saw chain is called the cutter andconsists of a cutting tooth (A) and the depth gauge (B).The cutters cutting depth is determined by the differencein height between the two (depth gauge setting).

When you sharpen a cutting tooth there are fourimportant factors to remember:

• Filing angle.

• Cutting angle.

• File position.

• Round file diameter.

It is very difficult to sharpen a saw chain correctlywithout the right equipment. Husqvarna recommendsthat you use our file gauge. This will help you obtain themaximum kickback reduction and cutting performancefrom your saw chain.

WARNING: Departure from the sharpeninginstructions considerably increases the riskof kickback.

Note: See instructions under Filing equipment and filingangles on page 38 for information about sharpeningyour saw chain.

To sharpen the cutting teethTo sharpen cutting teeth you will need a round file and afile gauge. See instructions under Filing equipment andfiling angles on page 38 for information on the size of

file and gauge that are recommended for the saw chainfitted to your product.

1. Make sure that the saw chain is correctly tensioned.A slack chain will move sideways, making it moredifficult to sharpen correctly. See instructions under To tension the saw chain on page 30

2. File all teeth on one side first. File the cutting teethfrom the inside face and reduce the pressure on thereturn stroke.

3. Turn the chainsaw over and file the teeth on theother side.

4. File all the teeth to the same length. When the lengthof the cutting teeth is reduced to 4 mm (5/32") thesaw chain is worn out and should be replaced.

General advice on adjusting the depth gaugesettingWhen you sharpen the cutting tooth (A) the depth gaugesetting (C) will decrease. To maintain optimal cuttingperformance the depth gauge (B) has to be filed down toachieve the recommended depth gauge setting. Seeinstructions under the heading Filing equipment and

filing angles on page 38 to find the correct depth gaugesetting for your particular chain.

A

B

C

WARNING: The risk of kickback is increasedif the depth gauge setting is too large!

To adjust the depth gauge settingSharpen the cutting teeth before adjusting the depthgauge setting. See heading To sharpen the cutting teethon page 29. We recommend that you adjust the depthgauge setting every third time you sharpen the cuttingteeth.

Note: This recommendation assumes that the length ofthe cutting teeth is not reduced excessively.

You will need a flat file and a depth gauge tool to adjustthe depth gauge setting. We recommend that you useour depth gauge tool to acheive the correct depth gaugesetting and bevel for the depth gauge.

1. Place the depth gauge tool over the saw chain.Detailed information regarding how to use the depthgauge tool, will be found on the package of the depthgauge tool.

2. File off the tip of the depth gauge that protrudesthrough the depth gauge tool. Use the flat file.

The depth gauge setting is correct when you no longerfeel resistance as you draw the file along the depthgauge tool.

To tension the saw chain

WARNING: A slack saw chain may jump offand cause serious injury or death.

The more you use a saw chain the longer it becomes. Itis therefore important to adjust the saw chain regularlyto take up the slack.

Do a check of the saw chain tension every time yourefuel. Tension the chain as tightly as possible, but notso tight that you cannot pull it round freely by hand.

Note: A new saw chain has a running-in period duringwhich you should do a check of the tension morefrequently.

1. Undo the bar nuts that hold the clutch cover/chainbrake. Use the combination spanner.

2. Tighten the bar nuts by hand as tight as you can.3. Raise the tip of the bar and stretch the saw chain by

tightening the chain tensioning screw. Use thecombination spanner. Tighten the saw chain until itdoes not sag from the underside of the bar.

4. Tighten the bar nuts using the combination spannerand lift the tip of the bar at the same time.

5. Make sure that you can pull the saw chain roundfreely by hand and that it does not sag from theunderside of the bar.

The position of the chain tensioning screw on ourchainsaws varies from model to model. See instructionsunder the heading Product description on page 2 to findout where it is on your model.

Lubrication of the cutting equipmentTo do a check of the saw chain lubricationDo a check of the chain saw lubrication each time yourefuel.

1. Start the product and let it run at 3/4 throttle. Aim thetip of the bar at a light coloured surface about 20 cm(8 inches) away.

2. After 1 minute running you should see a distinct lineof oil on the light surface.

What to do if the saw chain lubrication is not working

Do the following if the saw chain lubrication is notworking:

• Do a check of the oil channel in the bar to make surethat it is not obstructed. Clean if necessary.

• Do a check of the groove in the edge of the bar tomake sure that it is clean. Clean if necessary.

• Make sure that the bar tip sprocket turns freely andthat the lubricating hole in the tip sprocket is notblocked. Clean and lubricate if necessary.

If the chain lubrication system is still not working aftercarrying out the steps above and associated measures, contact your servicing dealer.

Chain drive sprocketThe clutch drum has a rim sprocket that is replaceable.

• Regularly do a visual check of the degree of wear onthe drive sprocket. Replace the chain drive sprocketif there is too much wear.

• Replace the drive sprocket each time you replacethe saw chain.

To lubricate the needle bearingBoth versions of sprockets have a needle bearing on thedrive shaft, which has to be greased regularly (once aweek).

1. Disengage the chain brake by pulling the front handguard against the front handle.

2. Unscrew the two bar nuts and remove the clutchcover.

3. Lay the product on its side with the clutch drumfacing upwards.

4. Remove the clutch drum and lubricate the needlebearing using a grease gun. Use a high-qualitybearing grease or engine oil.

To examine the cutting equipment forwearDo a visual check of the saw chain daily.

1. Make sure that there are no visible cracks in rivetsand links.

2. Examine wheather the saw chain is stiff.3. Compare the existing saw chain with a new saw

chain to decide wheather the rivets and links arebadly worn.

4. Replace the saw chain if it exhibits any of theconditions above.

5. Replace the saw chain when the length of the cuttingteeth has worn down to only 4 mm.

To do a check of the guide barDo a check of the guide bar regularly.

1. Examine whether there are burrs on the edges of thebar. Remove burrs with a file if necessary.

2. Examine whether the groove in the bar has becomebadly worn. Replace the bar if necessary.

3. Examine whether the tip of the bar is uneven orbadly worn. If a hollow forms on the underside of thebar tip this is due to running with a slack chain.

4. Turn the bar daily to prolong the life of the bar.

To adjust the oil flowThe oil pump is adjustable. The product is supplied fromthe factory with the screw set to middle position.

1. Turn the oil pump adjustment screw. Use ascrewdriver or combination spanner.a) If you turn the oil pump adjustment screw

clockwise the oil flow will reduce.b) If you turn the oil pump adjustment screw anti-

clockwise the oil flow will increase.

Clean the cooling system with a brush once a week ormore often in demanding conditions. A dirty or blockedcooling system causes the product to overheat whichresults in damage to the piston and cylinder.

Centrifugal cleaning systemCentrifugal cleaning means that the air to the carburettorpasses through the starter. Dirt and dust is centrifugedout by the cooling fan.

In order to maintain operation of the centrifugal cleaningsystem it must be regularly maintained. Clean thefollowing components:

• The air intake on the starter.• The fins on the flywheel.• The space around the flywheel.• The inlet pipe.• The carburettor compartment.

Winter useRunning problems can occur when using the product incold and snowy conditions. These problems are caused

by too low engine temperature or icing on the air filterand carburettor.

For temperatures below -5°C and/or in snowy conditionsa special cover is available. This cover is mounted onthe starter housing.

Note: The cover for winter use is not delivered togetherwith the chainsaw in all markets. Contact your servicingdealer for more information. Part number: 575 52 75-01.

The cover reduce the flow of cooling air and preventslarge amounts of snow from being sucked into thecarburettor space.

CAUTION: If the temperature rises above-5°C or 0°C respectively, the starter housingcover must be removed. Otherwise there isa risk of overheating, resulting in seriousdamage to the engine.

Heated handles572XPG

On models with the designation XPG both the fronthandle and rear handles are equipped with electricalheating coils. These are supplied with electricity from agenerator built into the chainsaw.

When the switch is pushed upwards, the heat isswitched on. When the switch is pushed downwards, theheat is switched off.

Electrical carburettor heating572XPG

On models with the designation XPG there is anelectrically heated carburettor. Electrically poweredheating prevents ice formation in the carburettor. Athermostat regulates the heating so that the carburettoralways has the right working temperature.
