The Annual General Meeting of the Parents and Friends Association was held last Thursday evening, 17 th March. The various reports of the activities of the Association during 2010 confirmed that last year was a very successful year for the Association. We are very grateful to the members of the 2010 Executive Mrs Kiim Parnell (President), Mrs Rebecca Scollen (Vice President), Mrs Heather Wallace (Secretary) and Mrs Ann-Maria Typuszak (Treasurer) and we congratulate them on their outstanding efforts on our behalf. Although Thursday s meeting failed to fill all the executive positions for 2011, there was plenty of enthusiasm for the various P&F projects that lay ahead. The proposed date for this year s fete is Friday, 16 th September this will be confirmed at the next meeting, but please mark this date on your calendar. At the meeting Mrs Alice de Brenni accepted the position of Secretary, Mrs Annette Kemp, the P&F representative on the College Advisory Board, and Mrs Rebecca Scollen has agreed to continue on as the Association s Vice- President; thank you to these ladies for taking on these roles. There are still two places to be finalised; namely the position of President and that of Treasurer. If you are interested in nominating for the Executive or would like to nominate someone else, please contact Mrs Scollen who is based at the Bath Street campus. The next meeting of the Association will be held on Thursday, 18 th April. The Opening School Mass, celebrated last Friday, 18 th March, was a marvellous gathering for our school community and a great opportunity for us to appreciate the gifts of our staff and our students. The Alice Springs Convention Centre was suitably prepared for this official opening of the school year. Clearly, Bishop Hurley was delighted to be amongst us and to experience our rather large school family. He spoke warmly to the students and compared the love of a mother for her baby to the love that God has for each one of us. He said that one of the most beautiful images that we can have of God is that of the face of a young baby. Thank you to Mr John Healy for coordinating the Mass, and thank you to the Religious Education Coordinators; Ms Vicky Howie, Ms Kathryn Reilly and Ms Kylie Henderson, who gave plenty of back-up support, fine tuning many of the arrangements. Likewise, thank you to Ms Kellie List and Ms Nikki Quesnel, who prepared the choirs for the occasion, and to the Heads of Campus and to Mrs Christine Honsa, and the office staff at each campus, who prepared and coordinated the Leadership Certificates. It was a great team effort from all the staff across the College and, as always, a special time for the school. Thank you to the many parents and family members who attended the Mass; hopefully you enjoyed this important gathering of the whole College. Reflection

The College will celebrate Harmony Day tomorrow as part of the students casual clothing day. Harmony Day promotes multicultural activities and goodwill amongst all peoples. The students are encouraged to wear clothes representing different cultures in our community. It is planned that some classes will also use the opportunity to share a luncheon, with food from a variety of countries. Money raised tomorrow will go towards the College s contribution to Project Compassion (Our Lenten fundraising efforts for Caritas Australia).

Finally, another reminder that our students will conclude classes for Term One next Thursday, 31st March; the Second Term will commence on Tuesday, 12th April.

Best wishes

Br Paul Gilchrist Principal

SOUL AND SURPRISE

I asked for strength, that I might achieve greatness. I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey. I asked for health, that I might do greater things. I was given infirmity, that I might do better things. I asked for riches, that I might be happy. I was given poverty, that I might be wise. I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men. I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God. I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life. I was given life, that I might enjoy all things. I got nothing that I asked for but everything I hoped for. Almost despite myself, My unspoken prayers were answered. I am among all men, Most richly blessed.

Campus News: Bath St This week finds us heading toward the third Sunday of Lent. The children have been focusing on Lent in class and discussing what this means in relation to how we lead our lives. The Gospel this week tells of the Samaritan woman who draws water from the well and is drawn into a conversation of her own, with Jesus. (See John 4:5-42 for more information)

The week has gone quite smoothly considering the absence of Mrs Paterson and Miss Nertney (as well as Mrs Hayward who was being a Guardian Angel) and I offer a great deal of thanks to all staff; office, teaching and emergency, who have helped facilitate this smooth running.

While I am in the Acting Head of Campus position, I am ably supported by Miss Susan Levitt, who has stepped into the Assistant Head of Campus Role. This means, that amongst other duties, Susan will take care of any well being and behavioural matters. If you have any concerns that you wish to discuss with me, please strive to contact me prior to 10:30 a.m. (Monday to Wednesday), as I am in classes after that time. The best days to make contact with Susan are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

PROJECT COMPASSION Once again, we are supporting Caritas through Project Compassion and we thank you all for you support thus far. The children viewed a video on Monday morning which demonstrated very clearly to where our Project Compassion money goes.

This week s focus: please try to bring 50c for every toilet you have in (or out) your household.

HARTLEY STREET ENTRANCE Work on the walk way via Harley Street, gave us all a bit of a surprise on Monday morning, while we knew it was to happen, we weren t quite expecting it then - but at least it s happening! We do expect work to be finished by the end of the week, but please be vigilant before allowing your children to use this entrance.

HARMONY DAY This Friday we are having a simple activity to celebrate the diversity of our Bath St Community. Everyone is invited to wear clothing reflecting their nationality and culture. Last year we saw some wonderful national dress, which was a great way for the rest of us to see how people from other countries dress. It would be great to see some of our visiting parents also wearing their national dress.

If you have no traditional clothing yourself, please try to wear an item of orange, which is the national colour for Harmony Day.

KISS N GO The main problems we are facing at the Kiss n Go area are:

children not listening for their names to be called

parents blocking the intersection at Wills Tce

Please be advised that fines are and will continue to be issued for this traffic offence.

Parents are reminded that all students should be dressed appropriately for a normal day of classes. We will also be celebrating Harmony Day. Students are encouraged to wear national costume if appropriate. There will be a selection of national foods available at lunch time for purchase and we as a campus will celebrate a short liturgy at 2:00pm followed by campus based activities. Funds raised from the sale of food will be donated to Caritas Project Compassion.

IMPORTANT NOTICE STUDENT LOCKERS Regrettably, we need to inform you that a number of thefts have occurred from student lockers recently. Items being taken are primarily electronic devices. Students were offered the option of buying a lock from the campus office at the beginning of the year or supplying their own. Unfortunately, some students have not taken either option. We would hope that you join us in making sure your son or daughter has access to a suitable lock for their locker. The Campus has locks for sale and will buy them back at the end of the year if they are maintained.

OLSH Band Represents Central Australia in Finals Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College is very proud of the performances by DKWWA and The Sky s the Limit last week in The Battle of the Bands held at CDU. Both groups performed very well and the judges found it difficult to pick a winner. In the end, The Sky s the Limit won first place and will now travel up to Darwin to compete in the Finals against all other winning bands in the Northern Territory. They are to be congratulated on their efforts and we wish them all the best in representing Central Australia during the semester break. Well done and good luck! Nikki Quesnel
