COLLEGE PRAYER

Prayer during Lent

Lent is a special time when we stop and think about how we can play our part in God’s hope for a world that is fair, just and peaceful. We think about our relationship with God, and how Serving others draws us closer to God. We also think about the changes we can make in our lives, to be God’s love and mercy in our world, ensuring all people have a just future. God of Justice, We come to you today as members of one human family. Teach us how to be your loving presence to others. Help us understand the challenges faced by those who are marginalised and most vulnerable to exploitation and injustice. Be with us as we try to change, to be young people who take action for others and seek a world where everyone has a just future. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear O’Loughlin Community,

The school year is in full swing. It is great to see energy and buzz in the classrooms, teams heading off for interschool sport, debating practice, house elections, etc. Our school is such a dynamic place.

Big news – O’Loughlin’s AFL Womens Team is playing in the Curtain Raiser for the AFLW Game between Adelaide Crows and Fremantle Dockers. Game starts approximately 4:00pm this Friday at TIO Marrara. Good luck to our team!

The BIG BIKE RIDE training is also up and running for 2018. This year, we are riding to Adelaide River! The group will ride on Tuesday 24th April from the College to Adelaide River. An option once arriving is to camp the night at Mt Bundy Station and then join in the commemoration of ANZAC DAY with the Adelaide River community. Regiment 8/12 from the 103 Battery Darwin will be joining us on the ride and supporting with logistics. The Palmerston and Adelaide River Police will also be in support. If students or families wish to be involved, please email Max Jones on [email protected] or call the College on 8945 1277 or collect a note from the Front Office.

Senator Patrick Dodson (right) has requested to visit O’Loughlin this Friday. The Senator is a prominent and important Australian, highly recognizable, and it will be a privilege to welcome him to our College. He is the Great Uncle of our College Captain, Aidan Singleton, and wishes to speak to us all about the significance of education.

‘Bullying No Way Day’ is next Friday 16th March and we will be focusing on this important message and approach. Unfortunately, the issue of Bullying refuses to go away and we must all be vigilant and ready to deal with any such issues that arise. Our Restorative Practice processes enable us to deal with these issues and two of our Senior Members of Staff have been invited to attend a four day Professional Development program run by the Restorative Practices company. We feel privileged and proud that we have been invited so that we can share our experiences and insights.

Harmony Day is also fast approaching (Week 8) and this year our College is organizing more events and activities to celebrate the Day and Week.

All the best.

Mr Rhett Bowden

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Project Compassion 2018

Once again, we are experiencing the Season of Lent with a focus on Project Compassion. This gives our students an opportunity to give generously to those living in poverty around the world. They learn not only about the living conditions of others, but also about the empowering work of Caritas Australia to support people in supporting themselves and their families. You can explore the Project Compassion resources at home with your families by clicking on this link: Project Compassion 2018.

We’d like to say a big thanks to Year 8’s Stephanie Ellis who proposed an idea to raise money for Caritas for the weeks of Lent leading up to Easter. Her team including: Jamelia, Janna, Mia, Annalise and Zoe have been working together to prepare, cook and sell pancakes on Friday morning before school. They have another three weeks to go and are aiming to raise as much money as possible for Caritas.

Special thanks to Ms Miranda Colquhoun and to all the staff who are supporting and encouraging the girls’ efforts. This is what the spirit of Lent is all about – a time of sacrificing our own needs and wants in the love and service of others.

There is a Project Compassion donations box for any visitors to the College at our Front Office – donations are welcome. In each classroom, students also make daily donations to show their love and concern for others who are less fortunate than ourselves.

God bless

Year 7 Library Induction

During our Personal Development lesson last week, all Year 7’s were

able to get a good grasp on the different resources they can use

within the College Library when it comes to researching for

assessment tasks.

Students learnt about Encyclopedias, the College

Catalogue, how to look up books and much more!

All Year 7’s were on their best behavior and were

keen to start researching for some of their assignments.

I would like to Thank Ms. Donna McDonald, our

Librarian for taking the time to teach our Year 7

students.

Year 8 Personal Development

On Friday, 23rd of February and Friday, 2nd of March, half of the Year 8 students were visited by two police officers who led a ‘Think U Know’ presentation. During this presentation, the students were taught about the importance of cyber safety and were given a few insights into the dangers that one can face online. Through various videos, questions, discussions and informative slides, the students learnt about the impact cyber bullying can have on a person, as well as what they should do if it happens to them. The officers spoke to the students about the importance of maintaining their privacy online and the importance of not sharing passwords – even among close friends. The students spoke about what could happen if they did share their passwords or any personal information and discussed how easily personal information can be shared without intending to do so. There was also a discussion about what a digital footprint is and how once something is on the internet, it is incredibly difficult to remove it. The students were extremely engaged throughout both of the presentations and were involved in the discussions. They were eagerly asking questions and participating whenever the police officers asked questions of them. While the presentations were happening, the other half of the year 8 students were working in their Homerooms and completing activities about what makes a good Digital Citizen and what can they do to be a good digital citizen. Overall, the two weeks of Personal Development have been a valuable experience for the students to remind them and reiterate the importance of being careful while online. This has been a lead up to ‘Bullying. No Way! Day’, on the 16th of March. The Year 8 students will continue looking at different forms of bullying and its impact over the coming weeks.

Year 8 Team Building Days

On Thursday 15th and Friday 16th of February, the Year 8 classes spent a day at the Portuguese and Timorese Social Club for their Team Building Days. Arriving bright and early, the days were full of activities which got the students working together to figure out the best way to achieve different goals. We had activities both inside and outside throughout the day and also gave the students some free time to burn off excess energy with soccer, footy and cricket.

On Thursday, 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3 challenged themselves with crossing a ‘river’, fitting as many people as possible on a tarp, navigating a ‘minefield’, cardio Pictionary and a bucket dash. Cardio Pictionary was a crazy race to be the first team to have drawn 30 words while constantly running between teachers to find the word. Despite all the chaos, it was a fun time which had everyone laughing and sprinting around the room.

On Friday, 8.4 and 8.5 managed to beat many of the high scores from Thursday, and had a go at a balloon relay indoors due to the rain outside. With many popped balloons and squeals each time it happened, group 4 managed to finish first and received some tasty prizes. Students’ trust was challenged as they navigated through the minefield blindfolded while carrying a partner, and they worked together to determine who was the werewolf in their village.

The two days were a big task to organise and run and could not have been done without the amazing staff that came along. Each staff member was incredibly enthusiastic and managed to keep the days running smoothly all the while having a big smile on their faces and enjoying themselves too. I want to say a huge thank you to them for all the work they put in, the days would not have been anywhere near as fun without all their help!

Year 9 Team Building Day

On Tuesday the 13th of February all of the Year Nine students attended their Team Building Day at Charles Darwin University. Students were encouraged to make their own way to the venue to help build on their independence and familiarise themselves with the area as they may frequent the University through the year for different programs.

The activities focussed on teamwork, leadership and communication. Besides from the enthusiasm shown throughout the day I think the highlight for most students was the cafeteria and the range of foods available at lunch and recess. The students were a credit to the College with their behaviour throughout the day and there were a number comments from CDU staff about how well-mannered and respectful they were.

A big thankyou to the homeroom teachers for the help throughout the day (Mr Jones, Ms Orr, Ms Smith and Ms de Moor) as well as the support staff Mr Blackadder and Mrs Potts.

Middle School T20 Cricket With a cautious eye on the sky, 18 boys and one girl headed to Marrara Cricket Ground for the T20 Middle School Cricket tournament. After some early showers during the set-up, the weather gods looked favourably on us and we had a fine, yet hot and overcast day of cricket.

O’Loughlin Catholic College took two teams. O’Loughlin 1 was made up of ten Year 8 & 9 boys playing Pool A, and O’Loughlin 2 was made up of seven Year 7 boys with one Year 8 boy and one Year 8 girl playing Pool B.

O’Loughlin 1 were the overall winners of their Pool finishing undefeated after beating Darwin Middle School easily, Dripstone in a much closer match and Nightcliff in a reduced overs match. Accurate slower bowling and big hitting with lots of 6’s were the secrets to O’Loughlin’s success. Highlights would have to be three players getting 4 wickets each in the first game and Zayden hitting 24 off one ball!

O’Loughlin 2 finished second in their Pool behind a much larger and older MacKillop team. They won their first game against Dripstone by five runs and then defeated Darwin in a nail biter with some big hitting at the end of the innings from Andy, getting the team over the line. The last game was a disappointment as the much stronger MacKillop team didn’t take it seriously but the O’Loughlin team didn’t give up trying and were a credit to themselves. Tight bowling by Zane and lots of run outs kept the interest in the game.

Thank you to Cassie Henderson for her thorough planning and congratulations to the students in how well they behaved on the day.

FROM THE SPORTS FACULTY

Middle School Boys AFL Competition It was an exciting day out Wednesday last week for the OCC Middle School AFL Boys Team. The boys played with heart and determination and never gave up in hot conditions. They bonded as a team, demonstrated excellent skills and their sportsmanship towards the other teams was fantastic.

The boys came away second in Pool B and overall, they finished 4th. There was a total of 8 other schools involved, with the bigger bodied St Johns team taking out 1st place.

O’Loughlin was lucky enough to have 6 of our players selected to participate in the Academy training squad for Regionals. Congratulations to Elijah Williams, Xavier Vallejo, Alwyn Davey, Caleb Paterson, Brodie Motlop and Rory Fairchild on being chosen.

However; what made it such a successful day was the behaviour and respect that all players had for each other and how well they responded to Mr Paull and Mrs Bonde’s coaching. Thank you to both these teachers for their time and effort on the day and well done to all members of the team for representing the College so well.
