Dear friend of Olney Theatre Center,

Whether your first Walt Disney animated film was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) or Frozen (2013), your worldview has probably been influ-enced, at least a little bit, by that Disney onscreen magic. Even adults who look down on other animated movies have a soft spot in their hearts for Disney, and it’s no surprise. Think of Bambi, Pinocchio, Cinderella, and the movies of the studio’s great renaissance, starting with The Little Mermaid in 1989, through The Lion King in 1994: not only were these exceptional works of artistic achievement, they dealt with troubling issues in sublime, emotionally resonant ways.

So as you’re watching Disney’s The Little Mermaid today, I hope you’ll find the experience both emotionally and artistically rewarding. Director Mark Waldrop, who helmed our productions of The King And I, The Sound of Music, and Annie, has assembled a stellar creative team to tell this story in fresh and unexpected ways. Rather than attempt to replicate the film, Mark is employing magic unique to the stage to bring Disney’s The Little Mermaid to

life. Actors manipulate puppets to create the undersea world; they hoist ropes to bring a ship onstage; Tara Jeanne Vallee’s choreography sparks your imagination so you see mermaids swimming in the water, not walking across a stage made of plywood and masonite. Whether you’re 5 or 85, this experience should provide unadulterated delight for the entire family.

That’s what’s special about the holidays at Olney Theatre Center. Watching young people experience live per-formance for the first time is one of the best parts of my job… and it’s made even better when I see multiple generations of families – kids, parents, and grandparents – come to the theater together. There are few better ways to celebrate this wonderful season, and we’re awfully glad you’ve chosen to celebrate with us.

So keep the family together! Bring them back for Paul Morella’s one-man A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas across campus in the Mulitz-Gudelsky Theatre Lab (a wholly different kind of stage magic), and then join us back here in the Mainstage for Godspell in February. But before then, drop me a line at [email protected] and let me know what you think of the show, and what you hope to see more of as we start planning 2016.

Onward!

Jason Loewith Artistic Director

“You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality.”

– Walt Disney

You enrich our world the moment you walk through our doors. It’s because of people like you that Olney Theatre Center is often described as “more than a theatre, it is a community.”

I’ve been managing director at OTC for nearly three months now. And in that time, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of meeting many of you who enthusi-astically share your Olney stories with me. Some of my favorites include a married couple who spent their first date at the theatre and have since com-memorated every anniversary with an evening at Olney; grandparents who annually bring each of their six grandchildren to a show; longtime friends who mark their friendship with gifts of theatre membership; staff who started out as Olney apprentices; and artists who tell me working at Olney is a highlight of their career.

So many of you say that being a part of the Olney Theatre community has made a meaningful difference in your life. Maybe it’s because of our diverse and engaging programming, or the esteemed performers you love to watch on stage. Perhaps it is the company you enjoy at the theatre, or our friendly and attentive staff. Or, maybe it’s the National Players who astound you with their youthful and raw talent, or our apprentices who astonish us all with their skill and boundless energy.

If you feel that the people of Olney Theatre have made a difference to you, please consider telling us so by making a gift. The envelope in this program makes it easy. Just send it back to us with your gift. You can also give online at www.olneytheatre.org/support.

Producing theatre for audiences like you is a joy. Thank you for being a part of our world.

Wishing you the happiest of holidays,

Debbie Ellinghaus Managing Director [email protected]

I’ve always liked musicals, but it has been a wonderful surprise to discover how much the new work and classic plays at Olney Theatre Center have inspired me. Plays like I and You and Colossal have stayed with me long after I left the theater. The National Players stunning production of To Kill a Mockingbird gave me goose-bumps. Being in the audience for an Olney production is like going on a fabulous adventure. And at the end of the show, I’ve learned something new and I’m so much better for it.

With a young baby and increased demands in my Bethesda law practice, many ask me how do I have time for Olney Theatre? I say, how could I not? I choose to support OTC because I know that my gifts help to make jobs available for emerging and established artists here in Maryland, provide opportunities for the younger generation to experience first-hand the magic of live performance, and support production so that the theatre can continue to create outstanding and passionate work.

Olney Theatre Center enriches my life and I give my gifts with pleasure.

DRAMATURGICAL NOTES

In 1836, all Hans Christian Andersen had to his name were poorly received fairy tales and unrequited loves. Although critics discouraged him from writing more fairy tales, by 1837 he had channeled his unrequited feelings into The Little Mermaid.

Andersen‘s story follows a mermaid who sacrifices her voice to earn an immortal soul through the love of a human prince. As in Andersen’s life, though, the mermaid fails to win her prince’s love. When the prince marries another woman, the mermaid must kill him to return the sea; since she cannot, she dissolves into seafoam. Andersen wrote that it was “the only one of my works that has affected me while I was writing it.” After his initial draft, he softened the tragedy for his mermaid. She earns her immortal soul as an air spirit, and through the story, Andersen earned his immortal fame.

In the 1930s, Walt Disney considered The Little Mermaid, but chose The Ugly Duckling instead. It wasn’t for fifty years that directors Ron Clements and John Musker brought The Little Mermaid back to the table in their search for a relatable princess. With Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, the songwriters behind the stage hit Little Shop of Horrors, they created a Broadway-style musical with a new ending and emphasis on Ariel’s thirst for adventure. Its quick establishment as a classic heralded the Renaissance of Disney’s animated fairy tales, and set Disney on the path to theatrical production.

From 1994’s Beauty and the Beast through The Lion King, Tarzan, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin, adaptations of animated films have pushed the boundaries of the medium to immerse us in something enchanting and purely theatrical. The structure of The Little Mermaid leant itself to the stage, where it could make audiences “part of [its] world.” Because the story calls for underwater motion and characters of many species, it provides exciting creative challenges for its artists. Theater gave The Little Mermaid room to grow, adding eleven new songs and expanding the backstories and relationships of many characters, including Ursula, King Triton, Prince Eric, and Flounder. In this production, we invite you to dive into your imagination, experiencing both the magic and the means that make it possible.

For all its expansion and new theatricality, The Little Mermaid is the same story that has captivated readers, artists, and audiences since 1837. It illuminates a magical underwater kingdom, but simultaneously puts us in the flippers of a young mermaid who finds it dull. As Sebastian warns, “The seaweed is always greener in somebody else’s lake.” Many of us marvel at the things Ariel considers commonplace: coral castles, singing sea creatures, even her tail. And yet, she longs for our everyday activities: walking, jumping, dancing, feeling earth beneath her feet.

Hans Christian Andersen wrote, “The whole world is a series of miracles, but we’re so used to them we call them ordinary things.” In Olney’s production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, we hope to capture the wonder in both the ordinary and the extraordinary.
