Family Arena Case Study

Background

• As a result of the Earthquake in Nepal (April 2015), families were displaced, and some members who had fled/left the country wanted a cost effective way to stay in touch with family members, we were contacted by the community following ESOL courses delivered in the past.

Inputs

• 17 learners registered, An estimated 45 hours each by 4 volunteers teaching face to face on Sunday afternoons the computer basics using UK online programme as a framework. This was run at the beginning of this year ending in May. Truly a goodwill gesture as this was not run under any funding provision.

Output/Impact • A significant number spoke little English, unsure how to switch on a

computer initially, however, at the end of the course we had 10 completes, who are now confidently able to send emails, including attachments to family members in Nepal and friends locally, access news electronically etc

• Some of the learners have also registered interest to complete the C&G online accredited element.

• We have also fostered closer links between the two communities! • See link below for presentation celebration

Family Arena Family Arena is about providing a social hub for the benefit of the wider community. We are an initiative combining the strength of the church and our local community. This involves work with both Adults and young members of the community with an aim to reach BME and other deprived groups within our catchment area – Cowley.

Holiday Activities Family Arena is OFSTED registered (EY421233) and caters for age 5-18 years. It is also registered with the Out of school alliance and its key staff are trained by Oxfordshire Play Association in Play work. The diverse indoor and outdoor activities include high quality cultural and sporting activities, creative play, road trips, visits to theme parks, cinema and museums that stimulate growth and meet the play needs and preferences of each child. Development of life skills, leadership, health & safety and safeguarding skills are integrated.

Oxfordshire Adult Learning’s Learning for Wellbeing project is a new programme of courses

aimed at adults across Oxfordshire who want to improve their mental health & wellbeing. The

courses are offered as part of a national research project to investigate the impact of adult

learning on mental health. They are free to learners and you will be asked to participate in a

number of confidential data collection activities during your course. To book a place please

SUMMER LEARNING FESTIVAL

For Adults with Learning Disabilities/Autism

FarmAbility and Oxfordshire Adult Learning offer fantastic and varied

learning opportunities for adults with learning disabilities/autism in

Oxfordshire. We are inviting potential learners to a fun, interactive outdoor

day that will showcase what we offer. Participants will be able to choose from

a range of free tasters in horse care, gardening, cookery, yoga, complementary

therapies for relaxation and much more.

SS TUBE Technology taster day

SS Tube Technology and Abingdon and Witney College are working in partnership to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in Oxfordshire.

SS Tube Technology is an engineering business based in Oxfordshire specialising in the design and manufacture of bespoke, advanced tubular fabrications and thermal management systems for high tech industries. Products are used in harsh environments where extreme temperatures, highly corrosive conditions and severe vibration loads are experienced.

SS Tube Technology are always looking to recruit exceptional young talent and this taster day could be your chance to shine. If you have good GCSE’s and have an inquisitive nature SS Tube Technology could be the right company for you.

The session will include:

- a presentation and tour

- observations of Computer Aided Design (CAD), laser cutting (watch a keyring, of your initials, being cut), tube bending, CNC machining

- activities in the insulation department, spot welding using PPE, and TIG welding (melting metal together using electrical impulses).

You will also get a chance to talk to a current SS TUBE Technology apprentice.

Special July “Carnival” Course – 3 Day Video Production-

9th – 11th July 2016, 11:30 am – 4:45 pm

In July Film Oxford are running a special course during the Cowley Road Carnival. Learn how to make films by making a film for the Carnival, where you will get to film the crowds, music and events, and also do the editing!

This 3 day introduction to video-making covers the whole process of video production from the initial idea through to a finished film. The course is designed for people wishing to make their first step into video production. Learners on this course will work together to shoot a film about the carnival on our digital equipment, and then edit the film with Adobe Premiere computer software. What is Cowley Road Carnival? For one day of the year, on the 10th July, the traffic stops and the Cowley Road reverberates to pulsating global rhythms and vibrant colour of Carnival. Oxford’s big day out attracts 45,000 people to the festivities with hundreds of musicians and dancers performing at stages and venues along the street. There is delicious food to try, a huge procession of around 800 people with theme

‘all the world’s a stage’ and plenty of activities with something to appeal to all ages and backgrounds. All Equipment is provided for this course. Cost: £140 (includes 10 per cent early booking discount if booked by 26th June 2016)
