Current State of Hong Kong Daniel O’Neill, PhD, Assistant Professor, Political ScienceFeb 2, 3 and 4This lecture will review the history of Hong Kong before considering its political status within the People’s Republic of China (PRC), focusing on The Basic Law, under which Hong Kong is ruled, and which promised universal elections for Hong Kong’s chief executive. Disagreements over the interpretation of the law by China’s leadership in Beijing and democracy advocates in Hong Kong have led to the recent wave of mass protests. How might recent events affect the Chinese government’s desire to use the “one country/two systems” formula to reunite mainland China and Taiwan, thus placing all of “Greater China” under the control of the Chinese Communist Party in the PRC?

Overcoming the Killing Fields of Cambodia Kuy Ky, DDSFeb 24 First United Methodist Church in LodiCommunism under Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979 was genocidal at its worst. Pol Pot designated 1975 as “Year Zero.” Under his agrarian policy, Cambodia would be purified and rid of all foreign influences. Under his regime, 1.8 million human beings were eliminated by execution, starvation, and diseases.

The Voting Rights Act: Past, Present, Future Brian Landsberg, Professor McGeorge School of LawFeb 25 Janet Leigh TheatreThis lecture will describe the origins of the Voting Rights Act, the country’s most effective civil rights legislation, the progress made under the Act, the recent decision holding some provisions no longer constitutional, and possible future developments.

US Foreign Policy and World OrderGene Bigler, PhD, Retired ProfessorMar 2, 3 and 4 Part 1Mar 9 and 10 only Part 2Utilizing the framework for understanding global politics that Henry Kissinger outlined in his latest treatise on World Order, the two lectures will examine how the Obama Administration under Secretary of State John Kerry’s leadership has responded to new challenges. We will review how the U.S. has handled the increasing prominence of China, the rising conflicts in the Middle East, the revival of Russian aggressiveness, problems in the Western Alliance, the dimming prospects for trade cooperation, and other developments as we search for positive threads.

The Future of Online LearningKenneth Day, PhD, Professor, CommunicationMar 16, 17 and 18The Internet potentially provides a radical transformation in how both traditional and non-traditional students learn. In this presentation, we discuss the beginnings of online learning, how it has evolved and the impact it continues to have on higher education. Some of the topics touched upon are the rise of blended/hybrid learning (a combination of face-to-face and online instruction), the growing impact of free MOOC’s (so called Massively Online Open Courses which enroll thousands of students), the potential positive and negative economic impact of online learning on the traditional university system, and the question of whether quality education can really be provided online.

Ancient Trade Routes and Current Day TerrorismKatie Chapman, MAMar 23, 24 and 25The term "globalization" may be new, but the concept is thousands of years old. Since the earliest tribal times, trade has expanded outward, eventually encompassing Asia, Africa, and Europe during the Roman Empire. This was accomplished by way of eight overlapping routes, utilizing both land and sea. These routes included many local trails that are still in use today in the movement of goods and to spread terrorism. We'll take a look at the ancient and the current as we examine the concept of globalization.

Join us for a lecture about the fundamental forces, the structure of matter, and why the Higgs discovery is important.

The Bible in Public Debate: The Use and Abuse of Sacred Texts Joel Lohr, PhD, Director of Religious and Spiritual LifeApr 6, 7 and 8Same-sex marriage. Abortion. Evolution. People of faith often look to the Bible for guidance and use it in public debate. But who sets the rules? And why privilege any religious text in public debate? Dr. Lohr will map some of the territory before offering tentative solutions.

LECTURE SERIES BOOK DISCUSSIONS

Included in registration.Be sure to read the books first!

March by Geraldine BrooksHelen Gross, Former EducatorThu, Mar 5 1-2:30pm LOEL at Hutchins St. Square

March retells Louisa May Alcott’s novel Little Women from the point of view of Alcott’s protagonist absent father. The classic tale has been inserted in the story revealing the events surrounding

March’s absence during the Civil War in 1862. This 2006 Pulitzer Prize novel, an antidote to the "sugar filled" Little Women, is not a children’s story, but a hard look at slavery, marriage, war and separation, courage vs. cowardice.

Stoner by John Williams Robin Imhof, MLS, Humanities Librarian/Associate ProfessorMon, Mar 23 1-2:30pm Taylor Room Pacific Library“John Williams’s luminous and deeply moving novel is a work of quiet perfection. William Stoner emerges from it not only as an archetypal American, but as an unlikely existential hero, standing, like a figure in a painting by Edward Hopper, in stark relief against an unforgiving world.” (Amazon.com)
