Who We Are
Indianapolis Junior Roller Derby (IJRD) is a parent-run, non-profit, volunteer organization operating to provide an opportunity for junior skaters to participate and excel in the sport of roller derby. It is managed by a volunteer board of directors made up of parents of skaters. Everything we do relies on the involvement of our adult members (skaters’ parents or guardians). There are a variety of roles to be filled each season and current members will help new members learn the various roles and their responsibilities.
We are an inclusive organization and support all skaters and their families regardless or race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, body type, etc. and expect all adult members and skaters to treat each other with respect and kindness.
IJRD Skaters
IJRD accepts skaters ages 7 to 17. Our skaters range from beginners who may have only been on skates a few times to world-class junior derby athletes. Our volunteer coaches work with skaters where they are and help them to learn and improve at their own pace. IJRD skaters train hard, have fun, respect their teammates and coaches, and love the sport of roller derby. Our Varsity and JV teams compete both inside and outside the state of Indiana.
As skaters improve, their skills and knowledge of the sport will be assessed by the coaches. The athletic committee will select skaters for the JV and Varsity teams based on their knowledge, skills, teamwork, and dedication. Transfer skaters will also be assessed by the athletic committee upon joining to determine the appropriate level for each skater.
Potential skaters and their parents/guardians are encouraged to observe a practice session before joining to meet current skaters and coaches and ask any questions they may have.
Contact [email protected] to make arrangements and for the location of the private practice facility.

Roller Derby has been an amazing experience. It’s the only team sport I know of where attributes like tall or short, big or small, male or female do not determine a skater’s success. Rather, it’s each skater’s drive to improve, and a dedicated group of coaches and parents there to guide them.IJRD PARENT - 2018

the rules of roller derbyThe game of Flat Track Roller Derby is played on a flat, oval track. Play is broken up into two 30 -minute periods, and within those periods, into units of play called “Jams,” which last up to two minutes. There are 30 seconds between each Jam.During a Jam, each team fields up to five Skaters. Four of these Skaters are called “Blockers” (together, the Blockers are called the “Pack”), and one is call ed a “Jammer.” The Jammer wears a helmet cover with a star on it.The two Jammers start each Jam behind the Pack, and score a point for every opponent they lap, each lap. Because they start behind the Pack, they must get through the Pack, then all the way around the track to be ready to score points on opposing Blockers.Roller derby is a full-contact sport; however, Skaters cannot use their heads, elbows, forearms, hands, knees, lower legs, or feet to make contact to opponents. Skaters cannot make contact to opponents’ heads, backs, knees, lower legs, or feet.Play that is unsafe or illegal may result in a Skater being assessed a penalty, which is served by sitting in the Penalty Box for 30 seconds of Jam time. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
A common Jam might go like this:
1. Blockers line up behind the Pivot Line and in front of the Jammer Line.2. Jammers line up behind the Jammer Line.3. At the Jam-Starting Whistle, the Blockers skate forward and compete for superior position. The Jammers skate forward and try to get through the Pack. Each Blocker simultaneously tries to prevent the opposing Jammer from getting past, and to help their own Jammer get through.4. One Jammer exits the Pack and is declared Lead Jammer, earning the right to end the Jam when they decide. This Jammer races around the track to get into scoring position.5. The same Jammer begins to work their way through the Pack for the second time, and the opposing Jammer makes their way out of the Pack for the first time.6. As the second Jammer to escape the Pack comes around into scoring position, the first Jammer calls off the Jam.7. The first Jammer has scored several points (up to four), and held their opponent at zero points. Meanwhile, the opposing Jammer (by getting into scoring position) held the first Jammer at only those points, as they could have scored more points on subsequent passes.

IJRD practices
Our current practice schedule is as follows:
• Tuesday 5:30-7:00pm: All skaters (Rookie, JV, and Varsity)
• Friday 6:00-7:30pm: Rookie and JV skaters only
• Friday 7:30-9:30pm: Varsity skaters only
In addition to practices, JV and Varsity skaters participate in open scrimmages on designated Friday evenings during regular practice time. Rookie skaters are encouraged to stay and watch and parents are encouraged to use this time to learn and practice non-skating official roles.
ATTEndance
In order to participate in bouts, IJRD requires skaters to regularly attend and participate in league practice. A minimum of 60% atten-dance at regularly scheduled league practices is required. In the situation where a skater does not meet the required 60% attendance level, “makeup attendance credits” can be earned through certain other activities as long as the skater has attended at least 4 regularly scheduled IJRD practices in that month. Skaters can earn makeup attendance credits as follows:
• Credit equal to 1 IJRD practice can be earned for a practice or open scrimmage with another roller derby league.
• Credit equal to ½ an IJRD practice can be earned for participating in speed skate practice.
• Credit equal to ½ an IJRD practice can be earned for participating in other sporting events such as school athletic teams or cheer or other youth league sports.
All skaters who are rostered to bout are expected to travel. IJRD teams play other junior derby teams all over the United States, though primar-ily teams in the Midwest states.
