When Japan arrived to Spain Pianist Hisako Hiseki is one of the greatest ambassadors of Spanish music worldwide. Born in Japan, but having lived in Spain over 20 years, her last CD was chosen as the official commemorative project to celebrate the 400-year anniversary of Spain-Japan relations. Heir of the wisdom of Alicia de Larrocha and the music of Montsalvatge, Hiseki presents '400 Years of Dreaming - Beyond Time and Space,' an album that compiles the very best of two musical traditions that have much in common.

What do you feel, being selected to culturally represent the long-lasting diplomatic relations between Spain and Japan?

I feel fortunate. More than 25 years ago I visited Europe for the first time, and I've lived in Spain for over 20 years. During all of this time, I've learnt to love Spanish culture just as much I love my own, and this is why I'm delighted to take part in the commemorative anniversary.

Great musicians like Xavier Montsalvatge and Alicia de Larrocha have praised your talent as a pianist. How did they influence your career?

I learnt from Alicia de Larrocha owing to a Master course first, and through particular lessons later on. I learned about the charisma, the spirit and the strength of the pianist from her. Sometimes we worked through more than 6 hours nonstop, forgetting even to drink or eat. As for Xavier Montsalvatge, I had the honour to learn about his pieces directly from him, playing under his guidance. He was a really authentic person. I visited him over and over again so that he could tell me his impressions on my interpretations. It was Xavier who showed me the heart of Spanish music.

All of your released CDs focus on Spanish music. Now, and for the first time, they also include Japanese composers. Why did you wait for so long?

I've played Japanese music for a long time in my concerts, but I was not really sure whether it would appeal to the general public. Now we are celebrating the anniversary of 400 years of Japan-Spain international relations, I thought it was finally time to do it. I owe much to my country, and I feel I should contribute to the promotion of our culture.

What do you think is appealing about Spanish music?

I started studying European music, but when I first listened to Spanish pieces I felt them to be different, interesting. I took part in the contest 'María Canals' in Barcelona, where it was mandatory to play extracts from the Suite Iberia, by Albéniz. It was really difficult for me to understand his music at the beginning, but this also motivated me to keep on working to play it better. Once, after finishing one of my first concerts in Spain, someone came to me and told me that Spanish music had very difficult pieces and that only Alicia de Larrocha could play them at their best quality. This is how the challenge was born, as well as my wish to study Spanish music together with her.

Listening to your album it becomes apparent that the music by Ifukube or Miyoshi perfectly complement that of Mompou, Albéniz, or Montsalvatge. How can two musical traditions so far apart have this kind of connection?

Even though the pieces by Japanese and Spanish composers are indeed very different, they all share a goal in common, and that is to elevate the popular music of their respective countries to the highest level. I think it is because of this same motivation that apparently divergent music traditions coincide.

Apart from playing in concerts, you have also taken part in many contest juries. How do you find the pianistic level in Spain? Is there a lot of difference with Japan?

During the 20 years I've been living in Spain, the level of national pianists has risen extraordinarily. It is very difficult to compare the levels of Japan and Spain, as there are many differences born out of the particularities of each culture. Spanish pianists tend to interpret with innate passion, while Japanese pianists often stand out thanks to their technical and interpretive skills. But it's never possible to make generalisations.

Hiseki's Spanish Dreaming~Gold Disc Few artists can say they have learnt directly from Alicia de Larrocha and Montsalvatge, two of the most important music figures Spain has given the world in the last decades. This is why the discretion and modesty of Hisako Hiseki catches us unguarded, as does her great sensitivity when she plays Spanish music, which she has come to deeply understand after all these years. Having lived in Spain for over two decades, this Japanese interpreter launches now her 8th album. The CD compiles pieces by great masters such as Isaac Albéniz, Enrique Granados, Federico Mompou, Xavier Montsalvatge and the Japanese composers Akira Ifukube and Akira Miyoshi. Hiseki reasserts her position as one of the main pianists of the Spanish repertoire. In this particular case, wonder lays not in her well-known interpretive skills, but rather in the fact she has decided to include Japanese music in one of her albums for the first time. The singularity of her album derives precisely from the encounter of two separate worlds, two distant universes Hiseki connects with spontaneity and affection, in a CD that has been chosen as the official commemorative project to celebrate the 400-year anniversary of relations between Spain and Japan. It should be noted that playing the pieces by six different composers with the sobriety and elegance Hiseki displays requires exquisite interpretation skills. It is an exercise in sensitivity and empathy that results in one of the best versions of musical pieces belonging to us all, an integral part of our cultural heritage. Hiseki stands out owing to her perfect equilibrium between emotion and reason, delivering interpretations that bring together two worlds as different as they are similar. Japanese and Spanish music traditions have much more in common than perceived at a first glance. In the words of Hiseki, "even though the pieces by Japanese and Spanish composers are indeed very different, they both share the same goal, and that is to elevate the popular music of their respective countries to the highest level. I think it is because of this same motivation that apparently divergent music traditions coincide." Hiseki's oriental touch impresses the audience as she evokes images brimming with emotion and subtleness. Her phrasing has a particular sound to it, a great level of attention to accents and articulations.

Artist Interview: Hisako Hiseki Encounter with Spanish music Hisako Hiseki, who plays both piano solos and chamber music, perfected her skills in Germany and Switzerland before moving to Spain, where she has been enthusiastically playing the pieces of Albeniz, Granados, Falla, Mompou and other Spanish composers. Hiseki first got to know about Spanish music when she entered the international piano contest 'Maria Canals'. Even though she won the prize of honour in the competition, she found that the particular atmoshphere of Spanish music, its special rythm, tempo and tone, its heavy fragrance, was extremely difficult to master. This is precisely what motivated her to work in pursue of perfection even harder. "I became able to play Spanish music thanks to different factors. When I was recording in Switzerland, I included a piece by Debussy because the person in charge of the project wished me to do so. When I finished the recording, I kept talking to different people about what path I should follow from then on, and some advised me to play pieces other than the ones everyone else was already playing. That I should try something else. Little by little I came to think maybe Spanish music would be that special kind of music for me." "After that, I moved to Barcelona. My repertory used to focus on traditional, classical music, but after a Spanish friend's recommendation, I started focusing on the works by local composers. At first I worried about whether it would be possible for me to play those pieces, but then I got the support from people around me that encouraged me to start practising." Learning from Larrocha, the grandson of Albeniz, and Mompou's widow. Hiseki enrolled in a Master Course under the guidance of Alicia de Larrocha. From then on, there was no stop to her learning process: she recorded a CD featuring the Iberia suite by Albeniz, about which she got the chance to talk with the grandchild of the composer himself, who was 94 years old at the moment. Hiseki also had the opportunity to learn in depth about Mompou's works directly from his widow, Carmen Mompou. "I started by listening carefully to the tunes and popular songs women in the neighbourhood sang while hanging the laundry, and the music played by street

Hisako Hiseki – Press musicians. One of my professors, Mercedes Roldos, advised me to start by practicing with easy works and then gradually move to the most complex ones. Because of that I played many different types of pieces and eventually got to try Iberia and Goyescas out. In lessons with Alicia de Larrocha we would play for hours and hours straight, forgetting even to drink or eat; it was extremely hard but at the same time, very rewarding and a great opportunity. It was thanks to her intense teaching and all the notes that I was taking every day that we were able to publish a revised version of the original scores of Iberia, with extensive notes and comments". "I get many questions from Japanese piano players on how can they tackle the difficult rhythm in Spanish music. It was thinking to them that I decided to spread the knowledge I had received in my lessons and encounters with different professors and experts. I wished to open a door to Spanish music for them. The charm of Spanish pieces lays in their peculiar sense of rhythm; it sometimes feels like they glow in a subtle, ever-changing light. The colour of the sky and sea in Spain is completely different from Northern Europe's. The nature of its people is different too, with a sort of strong honesty and passionate personality to it. To convey all of this through music, one needs to pay close attention to the surroundings, take in the all of the particularities of the environment". At the time, Larrocha was playing in concerts worldwide, so she did not have much time to teach. However, when she found herself in her later years she felt the need to pass her knowledge on to the next generation and opened the Master Course. Hiseki even had the chance to receive personal lessons at Larrocha's own house, where the master pianist inducted Hiseki to the secrets of playing techniques and interpretation methods she had discovered over time. "'Until now I'd been playing like this, but lately I've been trying this other method out,' Larrocha used to say, and then she would happily show me her latest findings. The grandson of Albeniz didn't have the opportunity to meet his composer grandparent, but he was an enthusiast of Albeniz's music owing to the fact that his mother Enriqueta was always playing the piano for him. Enriqueta would say to him, 'everyone plays grandpa Albeniz's 'Iberia' in an extremely technical, mechanical way, but the truth is that these pieces are not meant to be played like that.' And then, she'd beautifully play the music for her

Page 9: Olivia Stanford Contents - revisemysite.com · Piano Olivia Stanford ... Hiseki first got to know about Spanish music when she entered the international ... special rythm, tempo and

Hisako Hiseki – Press child. I also heard a lot of stories about Mompou from her widow, Carmen Mompou. She told me that, in times of economic need, Mompou would tell her 'I cannot buy nice jewels for you, but please accept this song as a present from me,' and then write a piece for her. When I play, all of these encounters and exchanges with the dearest people of the composers come to my mind, making me feel connected to their life and their story." This November 16th Hiseki will offer a piano recital in Tokyo, where she will play all of the Spanish songs she has come to both master and love. "I also like Falla very much. Each of his works requires close attention to the precise sounds that match their different atmospheres, and at the same time, a degree of improvisation is also needed. Falla's pieces somehow adapt to one's own hand, and that's when you realise the composer himself was a brilliant pianist." Hiseki is a film lover. She also declares herself to be a fan of Tina Turner's songs. "The genre of her songs varies, but when you hear them, you know right away it's Tina because of her strength. I love how her concerts are full of powerful energy. I'd like to become a pianist with the same strength and energy Tina has." Concert schedule Hisako Hiseki, piano recital November 6th, 2012, Tokyo Hamarikyu Asahi Hall. Column The charm of Albeniz and Granados at its full in Hisako Hiseki's album. Albeniz (1860-1909) played a key role in new wave of Spanish nationalistic musicians in the contemporary age. He was a born traveller: when he was 12, he boarded on a ship in the port of Cadiz that took him to South America, and then went back to Europe at the age of 16, eventually getting married and settling down in Madrid when he turned 23. After that, he lived in London and Paris as well, but the more he travelled around foreign countries, the more conscious he became about his own origins, so that influences from Spanish national culture and folk songs can be found in many of his works. He composed 'Chants

Page 10: Olivia Stanford Contents - revisemysite.com · Piano Olivia Stanford ... Hiseki first got to know about Spanish music when she entered the international ... special rythm, tempo and

Hisako Hiseki – Press d'Espagne' (Songs of Spain) in his youth, of which he planned to do about eight, but only four remain. In the four pieces, each of them with the name of a Spanish region, the particular melodies and rhythms evoke earthy scents that appeal to those with a traveller spirit in them. 'Iberia' was composed on the late years of the author, and consists of four books of three pieces each. Debussy and Messiaen said about the highly praised pieces that each of them managed to give a completely distinctive impression, and that especially the songs bearing the names of Southern Spanish regions had a unique fragrance to them. Both coincided in that the work of Albeniz signalled the birth of a new, exceptional type of Spanish piano music. The album by Hisako Hiseki causes a profound impression owing to her mastery in transmitting the very soul of the composer, taking the audience to the heart of the song. All of the pieces flourish under her hands, offering the most colourful imaginery to the listener. 'El Albaicín' stands out among them, managing to evoke the impression of a labyrinth, a complex play of light and shadow. Enrique Granados (1867-1916) was born in the region of Catalonia, and was introduced to music by his father, who was a Cuban soldier. After studying for a short while in Paris he settled down in Barcelona. His pieces stay away of nationalistic and romanticist influences and construct a noble, dignified atmosphere instead. Create during his first years as a composer, his '12 Spanish Dances' are based on local folk songs but gleam with touch of their own, painting vivid scenes of the peoples of the Iberian peninsula. His masterpiece 'Goyescas' represents, with tints of tragedy, scenes inspired by the paintings of Goya, who was a music lover himself. Hiseki's interpretation combines with ease a rhythm that is both powerfully pulsating and spontaneous, making the listeners feel the heavy scent of the earth resonating in their own souls. By hearing her play one can picture perfectly the excited chirping of birds and the cries of the "majas" (the young nobles) in Goya's magical, mysterious paintings that served as inspiration to Granados.

Hisako Hiseki – Discography Brilliant performance of the pianist settled in Barcelona, Hisako Hiseki. Great admirer of the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz, she devoted 10 years of her life revising the masterpiece “Suite Iberia”, along with the supervisión of professor Alicia de Larrocha. She has won the “Isaac Albéniz Medal” in 2006 and in 2011 she premiered in Japan, for the first time ever, a concert of Albeniz’s pieces with the Orchestra of Kyushu. The scores of Iberia are very well known by the pianist, as she has played them in many occasions, including the Anniversary of Albéniz’s birth. It is after having gained a great experience in all those performances that she recorded with extraordinary care this CD, resulting in a splendid performance of the complete pieces of Iberia, which will remain in the memory for as long as time. ●First position in the ranking of “Record Geijutu” magazine, January 2012. 12 Danzas españolas Op.37 Insitu Recordings

“I’ve been living for more than 20 years in Spain with my husband Etsuro Sotoo, who is sculptor in the Sagrada Familia, in construction even after Gaudi’s death. As my husband sculpts following the direction of the genius Gaudi, I’m also pursuing through my japanese sensitivity the essence of Spanish music. The revision of the edition of ‘Suite Iberia’ during 10 years with professor Larrocha was linked to the receiving of Isaac Albeniz Medal, a great honor for me. This CD is also a result of that. He gives a lot of importance to melody and he expresses every piano tone in a special way. • Track 1 Spring: In May, after cherry blossom, the new green leaves appear. In addition, spring is a season with new beginnings. It is for that reason that you can hear bright wishes and also a bit of insecurity. • Track 2 Summer: A strong light and an intense green. The nuisance of Japanese summer's high humidity it is expressed with an irregular waltz of ternary and binary time. • Track 3 Autumn: We call it "gathering season". It is wrapped in a fantastic scenery of red and yellow trees. We can hear this beauty and also a bit of sadness because winter is coming. • Track 4 Winter: The calm of winter in a world that becomes silvery, and sometimes covered with snow. It's a lullaby as sweet as the image of a little sprout in the middle of the cold winter. TRACK LIST [1] Dream Song on May [2] Distorted Waltz on August [3] Dream Song on November [4] Lullaby
