and adherence toscriptural commands— including dietaryrestrictions— are just
a few commonalities shared by Jews andMuslimsworldwide.Theyalsosharethe challenges of living as a religious minorityintheUnitedStates. Starting next year, Rabbi ReuvenFirestoneof LosAngeles-basedHebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion plans to unveil an intensivenewseminarthatwillallowfellowJewstolearnmoreabouttheirMuslimneigh-bors. Synagogues will be able to hostthe seminar, which eventually will bevideo recorded and accessible online,similartoAAi’sLovingMuslimNeighborsseminarnowavailabletoChristians. Firestone is Professor of MedievalJudaismand IslamatHUCandauthorof several books on Jewish-Muslim relations, includingAn Introduction to Islam for Jews and Children of Abraham: An Introduction to Judaism for Muslims.He lectures interna-tionally on Jewish-Muslim relations, and serves as co- directoroftheCenterforMuslim-JewishEngagementattheUniversityofSouth-ernCalifornia.WorkonhisAAiseminaris underway and slated for availability in2014.

When it comes to the topic of compassion, Jews,Christians, andMuslims largely believe the same thing, attendees discoveredatanAbrahamicReligionsTrialoguecalledtogetherbyAAiand
hostedatCongregationSinaiinSanJoseonOct.20. Morethan150peoplefilledtheConservativesynagoguetoheararabbi, pastor,andimamsharewhattheBibleandQur’ansayaboutservingthoseinneed.Eachspeakerstressedtheneedforactionabovewords,notingthattheirfaithgroupsoftenwerefarfromperfectincarryingoutthesecommands. “We all have the responsibility to encourage one another and our people to move from not just saying the right thing and maybe prayingthe right thing, but also doing the right thing,” said Rev. Larry Albright, worshippastoratSanJose’sLincolnGlenChurch,conveyingtheviewsofall speakers that night. Albright, who spoke on perspectives he gained from theMennonite tradition, joinedRabbi JoshuaBerkenwaldofCongregationSinaiandImamMubasherAhmadofBaitulBasirMosqueinMilpitas. The Rev. D. Andrew Kille, chair of the SiliconValley InterreligiousCouncil,moderated the event. Three Part HarmonySan Jose Jews, Christians and Muslims Unite to Serve
In February, three San Jose faithcommunities—Jewish, Christian,andMuslim—unitedtolistenand
learn from one another. From thatnewplaceoffriendship,theyworkedside-by-side,blending theirefforts toservetheneedy. Congregation Sinai, under theleadership of Rabbi Joshua Berken-wald, hosted the three groups for atime of orientation andmeal prepa-ration.Hostingwasanaturalchoice,says the rabbi, because his faith community participates monthly indifferent social actionprojects. Sinaimembers also enjoy interactingwiththoseofother faithswho share theirvalues of feeding the hungry andhelpingthelessfortunate. Different generations also con-tributed to the harmonious fusion ofsouls—teens comprised about halfof Congregation Sinai’s contingent.MuslimandChristianyouthjoinedaswell,alongwithothersdecadesolder.Together they devoted themselves tofriendshipbuilding,foodpreparation,andservingtheneedy.
Planners of the tri-faith eventwerecarefultoensurethemenuanditspreparationwerebothkosherandhalal(seepages3and5fordetails). YasminVanyaof theSouthBayIslamicAssociationservedasaneventcoordinator, helping weave togethermanypracticalaspectsof thegather-ing,includinggroceryshopping.“IgotalistfromtherabbiofkosherthingsIcouldbuy,”Vanyasaid.“Heeventoldme where to get kosher bread, andwhat kosher symbols to look for onvariousfoodlabels.” Then, under the supervision ofCongregation Sinai chefs, a mixedgroup of helpers prepared lasagnaand side dishes to satisfy homelessguests and volunteers at CityteamMen’sRecoveryCenter.ChristianandMuslim volunteers quickly learnedwhich utensils and areas of the synagogue kitchen were appropriateformealpreparation. Cutting, cooking, and conver-sation filled much of the afternoon,but not all. Because the orientationandmealpreparationcoincidedwith

Before dinner was served,prayers of thanksgiving in Hebrewand English joined those recited inArabicbyFatmaElashmawiofSouthBayIslamicAssociation. “I’m a firm believer that weshouldnotpretendwe’reallthesame…soIaskedPastorAlbrightandYas-mintoreciteablessingmeaningfultotheirtradition,”RabbiBerkenwaldex-plained.“Thatwaywe’rereallyshar-ing.Wecarried it out, and I think itwasasuccessfulpartoftheprogram.” Pastor LarryAlbright of LincolnGlen Church prayed on behalf oftheChristianparticipants.Heagreedthat when each group prays aloud,“ithonorsallpresent.”Withsensitiv-itytothoseofotherfaiths,“everyoneis praying to the God of Abraham,”so everyone connects. It also servesa primary goal: “building bridges ofpeace,”hesaid. Conversations among the threeSilicon Valley faith communities continue, as does compassionate collaboration. The Jewish religion calls for the
observance of dietarylaws as per thewordsfound in Torah. Theseareknownasthelawsof Kosher. The basic
elements of this law as observed by Orthodox Jews is asfollows. Meat-only animals that have both split hooves andchew their cud are considered kosher.A pig indeed hassplithooves,butdoesnotchewitscud;therefore,porkinanyformisnotkosher. Akosheranimalis“killed”quicklywithanextremelysharpknifewithnonicksatall,cuttingthejugularveininoneswiftmotion.Theanimalisthencheckedtoascertainthatthereisnointernaldiseaseormalformation.Thenextstepistoremovebloodbyfirstsoakingincoldwater,andthenplacingcoarsesaltonthemeattodrawouttheblood.Thefinalstepisanotherwashtoremovethesurfaceblood.Themeatisnowkosher(fittobeeaten). Poultry isconsideredmeat, so theabove instructionsapply. Non-scavenger birds such as chicken and turkey are considered kosher when prepared in the above manner. However,nodairyproductcancomeincontactwithkoshermeat.Koshermeatcannotbecooked inanoven,pot,oranyvesselinwhichnon-koshermeatordairyhasbeenprepared.Milkfromkosheranimalsisdeemedbothkosheranddairy.Dairyproductssuchascottagecheese,ice cream, yogurt, and so on, are acceptable only if no non-kosheringredientisusedintheirproduction. Fruitandvegetablesarealwayskosheriftherearenobugs in them,with the exception of grape products, forwhichspeciallawsapply.Waterisalwayskosher. Jewstodayarefortunatethatmanycompaniessellmeatthathasbeenprepared in thismanner,andsupermarkets oftencarrysuch foods.Manyorganizationssupervise theproductionofkosherproducts,easilyidentifiedbyofficial symbols that appear on food packaging. Even popular candies and cookies certify their products as kosher (cf.www.kosherquest.org/symbols.php). Whendiningout,aJewobservingkosherlawsdinesinarestaurantthatidentifiesitselfaskosher,ratherthanonethatserves“kosherstyle”food.
What is Halal?byNadimRahman
Halal,bydefinition,isanyobjectoractionthatislaw-fulandpermissible.Thistermcoversnotonlyfood
and drink, but all aspects of daily life. Regarding food,it specifies what is allowed and forbidden, and how itmustbeprepared.Formeat,halalrequiresthatslaughter be performed while invoking the name of God; the animalmustbeslaughteredwhileconscious;andbloodfromitsveinsmustbedrained.Processedfoodsthatcontain animal byproducts, as well as non-food items such ascosmeticsandpharmaceuticals,mustalsobehalal.Pork,blood, already dead animals, and those sacrificed to foreigngodsareprohibited.Consumptionofshellfishandotherbottomcrawlers,whilepermissible,isdiscouraged. Some explain that halal meat protects us from theharmful effects of blood thatmust be drained from themeat.Thedeeperemphasisof this requirement is foundintheHolyQur’an,whichprohibitsanimals frombeingkilledbystranglingorbyaviolentblow.Painissupposedtobeminimizedfortheanimal,sotheresponsibilityoftheMuslimisincreased.Eating,aseverythingelseinMuslimdaily life, is an act ofworship.These requirements andrestrictionsaresupposedtopromotepurityandintegrityinlife.Theythereforeincludeconnotationsofcleanliness,compassion,andself-restraint. In the United States, especially in California, halal meat is readily available at most Pakistani or Middle Eastern grocery storesand restaurants, butgenerally it’s much easier to find kosherproducts at stores.Qur’an 5:5 states that“all good things havebeen made lawful foryou,andthefoodofthePeopleoftheBookislawfulforyouasyourfoodislawfulforthem.”Therefore,manyMuslims considerkoshermeatormeat eatenbyChristians tobepermissible for Muslims, except for that specifically forbiddenbytheQur’an.Whentheoriginofpermissiblemeat is unknown, most conservative Muslims tend toavoid it.Others believe thatmeat becomes halalwhenthenameofGod is invokedover it.MuslimsarecalledtorememberGodbeforeconsuminganything,includingvegetables and fruit.When there is absolutely no otherfoodavailable,thennon-halalfoodisalsopermissible.

Abrahamic Alliance International.He’s always engaged in friendly conversation, with his beaming smileputtingothers at ease. I asked Larry how his service with AAi hasimpactedhislife.
Loureen:HowdidyoufirstlearnaboutAAianditsmission?Larry: When Rod Cardoza and hisfamily started attending our church,I got acquaintedwith them throughthechildren’schoir Idirect.As IgottoknowRod,IbegantoseethegreatvisionhehasforpeaceamongJews,Christians,andMuslims.Iwantedin.
LM:Whatwasyourfirst stepon thejourney?LA: I took his Loving Muslim NeighborsseminaronThursdaynights. Afterwards,Isawawholeotherworldofinvolvementwithpeople.
LM:Whathappenednext?LA:Mywifeand I,alongwithotherfolks from our church, attended an
AAi event at the Pacifica Institute.Eventually, I made several Muslimfriends.Ididn’thaveanybefore.
LM:Howdidthatcomeabout?LA: I got involved in planning anAAi service event. During one ofour planningmeetings, I mentionedthat I play basketball. One of the Muslimmen asked if he could joinme, and of course, I said yes. The friendship kept developing, and hisfamily had us over for iftar dinner duringRamadan.We’veparticipatedtogether in several service projectsnow, and I always look forward tospendingtimetogether.

It also mademefeelIhavealotofroomtogrow becauseitexposedahugeareawhereI’ve had questions. In the end, I’ve experienced the greatness of Godmoredeeplyinmylife.
LM: It sounds like theseexperienceshavereallyopenedyouup.Whatelsehaveyoulearned?LA:ToMuslims, their faith is every-thing. I see their devotion to prayerand wonder, do we have the samedevotion?Iwonderwherethatsamepassionisinourowncircles.
LM:What would you say to otherswhoareintriguedbytheworkofAAi?LA:God is openingmany doors forallofusrightnow,aswebreakdownstereotypes and work together forpeace. It’s wonderful to collaboratein building peace by serving thosein need together. It’s a great way forward.

The three Abrahamic faiths allseekpeaceformankind,yetitis obvious that achieving this
goal of peace is not an easy task.Let me share with you the Jewish concept. TheBiblebeginsintheveryfirstversebyteachingushowtoachievepeace.ThetextsaysthatGodcreated the heavens. The Hebrew word forheavens here is shamayim. It is aword consisting of two Hebrewterms: aish, which means fire, andmayim,whichmeanswater.HereintheBibleisteachingthattheCreator took two elements that cannot usually coexist and merged them together peacefully. We know thatnormally either fire evaporates water orwater extinguishes fire. Sothemessageisclear:whileachieving peace is not easy, it is certainly possible,accordingtotheHolyText. HenryKissingerlovestotellthisstoryabouthisfirstvisitasSecretaryofStatetoChina.Hewasimpressedbymanythingsonthatvisit,butthemostmemorablewashis trip to thezoo.There, in one cage,were botha lion and a lamb.Throughout theremainder of his stay, he could notget that image out of hismind.HewassoimpressedthatonhiswaytotheairportforhisreturntotheUSA,Kissinger asked to be taken onceagain to the zoo. Once there, he inquiredhowitwaspossibletohavethesetwo“enemyanimals”togetherinonecage.TheChineseresponded,“Nowyouseehowbrilliantapeoplewe are.” But Kissinger persisted inasking the secretof sucha success.
Finally, they shared it with him, saying,“Everyfiveminutes,weputinanewlamb.” Abrahamic Alliance Interna-tionalisdedicatedtothepropositionthatwecan, thatwemust, succeedin bringing peace to theworld, notjust the imageof it as inKissinger’stale. We are not necessarily askedto loveoneanotherequally,butwearesurelychallengedbyourmutualfaithstoseekpeace,topursuepeace.
The Bible and the Qur’ancall us to understand that we, too,can achieve this difficult task. The rewards are great, but the time isshort.The concept of an alliance isthat we all work together toward acommongoal.Thefirststeptowardasuccessful alliance is understandingthe ways and customs of the otherwithoutprejudgement. So let us learn from one another. Let us also learnwith one another.Andbecause theBibleandQur’an also call us to compassion-ately serve the poor, suffering, andmarginalized, let us learn fromoneanotherwhileservingthemtogether.Thenwewillexperiencea foretasteof thenewworld tocome,aworldwhose beauty can be likened untothat first day when God reconciledfirewithwatertocreatetheheavensandtheearth.

Turkish Muslims Open Homes for Ramadan
Muslims were not the onlypeople to celebrate thebreaking of the fast during
Ramadan this year. Jews, Christians,andothersintheBayAreaandSouth-ern California also commemoratedtheoccasionwithmembersofPacificaInstitute, aTurkish-AmericanMuslimcommunity,whoopenedtheirhomesduring the holy month. Pacifica membersextended the invitation “togather communities of different faithtraditions where we can sit down,discuss and find solutions for ourdailyproblemsinsociety,”explainedMahmutAltun, theNorthernCalifor-nia Pacifica Institute director, whohostedaniftarinhishome. Members of the institute haveopened their homes to non-Muslimsto celebrate iftar—or the nightly breaking of fast during Ramadan—since the inception of Pacifica Institutein2003,representativessaid.“It started when we invited a few families over during Ramadan, andthey turnedout tobesuccessfulandveryfriendly,”Altunrecalled. This year, most of Pacifica
Institute’s members were involvedin theoutreach efforts, saidMehmet Sen of Pacifica Institute Silicon Valley. The gatherings contribute to culturalunderstandingandhelpedu-cate non-Muslims about Ramadan,Sen said. “These kinds of things arereallygoodforus,”heaffirmed. In addition to gatherings atmembers’homes,thePacificaInstitute hosted larger,more formal iftars thatincluded various community andfaith leaders.That included an Aug. 1 dinner in Sunnyvale with talks by Pastor Robert McKee of St. Luke’s LutheranChurchandRev.D.Andrew Kille of the Silicon Valley Interre-ligious Council. A June 26 dinnerincluded participation from Jewishmembers of Keddem Congregationof Palo Alto. These events attracted severalcivicleadersaswell,includingthemayorsofSan JoseandMilpitas,24thDistrictStateAssemblymanRichGordon, Santa Clara County SheriffLaurieSmith,andSantaClaraCountyDeputyFireChiefJohnJustice. In Irvine, the Pacifica Institute hosted an iftar on July 26 that

simultaneously served as a Friday evening Shabbat service hosted byRabbi Arnold Rachlis of UniversitySynagogue. After breaking fast to-gether,Muslimand Jewishattendeesjoined hands while singing prayersfromaJewishprayerbook. According to Sen, communityiftars provide a good opportunity forconversation,andallowmembersto mingle with folks theymight notmeetonaneverydaybasis.Iftarsalso provideanoccasionforbusypeople to renew friendships over a tastymeal,soSeninvitedallChristianandJewishvolunteerswithwhomPacificaInstitutemembershadservedovertheyearsatAAievents. “Wearealwaysdelightedtoseeourvolunteersinviteeachothertocommunityeventsafterserving together,” saidRodCardoza, executive director of Abrahamic Alliance International, “especiallywhen opening their homes duringholidaycelebrations.” Steve Herrera, a deacon atChurch of the Transfiguration inSan Jose, said he enjoyed having a traditional Turkish iftar meal at the Altun family’s house during Rama-dan. Herrera, who attended the gathering with his wife and with a Jewish friend, was struck by the Altun family’s hospitality. It simply feltlikeagatheringoffriends,hesaid. Altun, who said that one purpose of Ramadan is to “bemore helpful and (share) what you havewithothers,”addedthatPacificaInsti-tutemembersplan tocontinuehost-ingnon-MuslimsduringRamadaninthefuture.“Thepositivefeedbackwegetfromguestsandhostsencouragesustodomore,”hesaid.

Albright spoke next, recallingthat many churches he’s attended focused on right believing ratherthanrightaction.Hewasthankfultohave found the Mennonite Church,whichalsolaborstopromotepeace. Albright referenced Jesus’ teachingin Matthew 25, which states Godwill judgepeoplebasedonwhethertheylookedaftertheneedyinsociety, particularly the hungry and thirsty,the stranger, the sick, the prisoner,andthosewhoneedclothes.Healsocited James 2:20, declaring “faithwithoutworksisdead.” “Offering prayer to God and offering one’s possessions to serveothers are two fundamental prin-ciplesof Islam,andbotharecloselyconnectedtoeachother,”saidImamAhmad. He cited Qur’an 2:177,which states that someone is not righteousforprayingtowardtheeastorthewest,butbasedonwhetherheorshebelievedinGodandhismes-sage andhas cared for theorphans,needy,andwayfarer.OtherQur’anicverses emphasize visiting sick andgrief-stricken families, providingmedicalhelp,removingilliteracy,andtreatinganimalsandtheenvironmentwellbecausetheyarecreatedbyGod, Ahmadsaid. Thoughallspeakerssaidactsofcompassion were an essential com-ponent to their faith, they stressedthis was easier said than done. Forinstance,whileLeviticus19:18com-mands us to “love your neighbor asyourself,” it is not always clearwhoone’s neighbor is, Berkenwald said.To preserve a Jewish way of life,it’s necessary to separate oneself attimes, particularly during times ofpersecution, he said. During thesetimes,one’sneighborisoftendefinedasafellowJew.Atothertimes,one’sneighbor is defined as “one’s fellow

human being.” “All human beings regardlessoftheirreligion,skincolor,ethnicityorgenderarefundamentallyequal and contain a divine spark,”Berkenwald said. “To harm anotherpersonistoharmGod.” Albright talked about the inner strugglesmany people face, such asremaining content in a world that promotes materialism.Ahmad notedtheculturalchallengesoflookingafterone’sneighborintheUnitedStates,aspeopleoftendonotknowtheirnext-doorneighbors. Attendees keptthe conversation goingaftertheevent,dining on kosherand halal refresh-ments while forg-ingnew friendships.Aftab Jamil of Baitul Basir Mosquenoted that this Trialogue was differ-ent from other forums in which dif-ferencesbetweengroupsareempha-sized.Hewasamazedtodiscoverthat Muslims and Jews even use almostidenticalterminology,astheHebrewtzedekah and Arabic sadaqah both refer to acts of charity. Congrega-tionSinaimemberHalHubrisnotedthatthemessagespresentedbyBerk-enwald, Albright, and Ahmad were “almostinterchangeable.” Someattendeeshopedtheevent
couldserveasaspringboardforfutureactivities.AmberlieRidnour,outreachdirector at Community Church ofGod in San Jose, exchanged contact informationwithJamilaftertheevent,hoping to plan a future event withBaitulBasirMosque. Berkenwald, who said duringthepresentationthatsomesynagoguemembers were nervous about host-ing the event, was pleased with the turnout. He noted that theTrialoguewas toendat9pm,butpeoplewereconversinguntilwellafter10pm.
