Mayor’s MessageDon’t hibernate, participate! Fall and winter is the perfect time to remain active by taking advantage of the great programs and classes offered in the City of Ottawa Older Adult Activity Guide.

Keeping fit has never been easier with classes for all activity levels including chair exercises to cardio and strength classes, or how about Zumba, line dancing or Tai Chi?

Learn how to get the most out of your iPad, or indulge your creative side with a drawing or painting class. You can also participate in winter sports with classes in curling and cross country skiing.

The City’s four seniors centres also offer a great selection of courses, as well as drop in activities ranging from bridge, cribbage, book clubs, choral groups, discussion groups and special events.

I encourage you to view the many programs available in the Older Adult Activity Guide as well as the programs offered in the Fall and Winter Recreation eGuide and enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle.

Ottawa Public Health provides programs that focus on healthy aging, preventing falls and supporting

informal caregivers.

Telephone Advice and InformationA telephone service is available for the public to obtain health information and confidential counselling on various topics. To talk with a public health nurse or to find out more about the programs described below, call 613-580-6744 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday (closed on statutory holidays).

Better Strength, Better Balance!Stay active and reduce your risk of falling. Join a Ministry of Health funded exercise program for adults aged 65+. This fall prevention program is delivered by Parks and Recreation & Cultural Services in partnership with Ottawa Public Health. It is offered twice a week for 12 weeks, starting in September, January and April. This is a beginner level class for those wishing to improve strength and balance. Strong muscles, strong bones and better balance will make you more mobile and less likely to fall. For more information about this program, call the Ottawa Public Health Information Line at 613-580-6744.

The Friendly Corner – St Laurent CentreThis health information and activity centre is located in the lower level at the St Laurent Shopping Centre. Ottawa Public Health nurses and volunteers offer activities that promote healthy aging.

Caregiver Support ProgramMost of the care seniors receive comes from family and friends. Ottawa Public Health nurses offer interactive group sessions for caregivers and a free resource guide to local services. They also provide telephone counselling.
