Background

• The name, “Chronicles,” given by Jerome in the fourth century AD, means diaries or annals.

• The Hebrew title is “Words of the Days,” or “Journals;” today, we might say “the events of the time.”

• First divided in the Septuagint Greek translation in the third century BC and given the name, “Omissions,” or “The Things Omitted.”

• “Chronicles of Whole Sacred History.”

• The text does not name the author or time of writing.• According to the Jewish Talmud, Ezra was the author.• Chronicles is similar to Ezra.• Written from a priestly viewpoint• Genealogies, temple worship, ministry of the

priesthood, and obedience to God’s law• Compare Ezra 1:1-3—2 Chronicles 36:22,23• Chronicles and Ezra may have been one continuous

history, as were Luke and Acts.

• Part 1: Chapters 1—9 = genealogies. Enabled determination of landowners so tribal territories could be restored after the Babylonian captivity.
