PASTOR’S WHITE BOARD

The Walk from Advent to Christmas

Posadas and Simbang Gabi are two familiar celebrations we encounter in the final week of Advent. The Mexican, Posadas, meaning “shelter, protection, or welcome” is celebrated from the 16th to 24th of December, either as a nine-day novena or a day of the novena. In it, the pilgrims go from place to place, led by children dressed as shepherds and angels. Two of the group dress as Mary and Joseph, or people carry statues. Led by an angel, Mary, Joseph and the group go from home to home, “inns” where there is no welcome, until they arrive at the final “Inn“– the host house, where there is welcome and celebration, as the Christ child is placed in the manger. Simbang Gabi, is also a novena, nine days of celebration before Christmas. Simbang Gabi means “night Mass.” Filipino farmers and fishermen asked the Church to celebrate early dawn masses before the heat of the day during the novena. The hanging of “parols” (colorful star-like lanterns) was to illumine the journey to Mass. Parols, were made of paper and bamboo representing the Star of Bethlehem. They symbolize the triumph of light over darkness. After the Mass, again, food, great festivities and celebrations are part of the heritage of the community. Here at Old St. Mary’s, we generally celebrate Simbang Gabi the week before the week of Christmas – and we leave the parols up throughout the Christmas season. On this Sunday we celebrate the Matthew’s version of Mary’s annunciation which includes the struggles of Joseph to accept Mary being pregnant (through the Holy Spirit). This dreamer Joseph, like another famous Joseph, discovers God’s intent for Mary in a dream that leads him to accept Mary and Jesus as his own family. On the journey from Advent to Christmas, this little scene brings great hope to many young women and families who have struggles with what others may think. And Monday and Tuesday this week, we’ll hear the story of the birth of John the Baptist and the praise that Zechariah raises up in song speaking of the mystery of how God works in individual lives. Just like Sunday when Joseph and Mary celebrate their extraordinary encounter with God, so too Elizabeth and Zechariah celebrate their encounter. In the four examples I’ve just mentioned, two things always happen. God is at work. And God works through average human beings in extraordinary ways to give people home and new life. Finally, we arrive at Christmas on Wednesday. Cue the angels, set alight the stars, invite the shepherds, get the Magi moving – now God does the most amazing and unpredictable thing, he comes to earth himself as a newborn, first-born, male child, Jesus. In the Posadas’ tale, not only is the Holy Family welcomed as a guest, that child becomes the source of all hospitality and welcome to God’s Kingdom. In Simbang Gabi’s tale, people’s kindness to one another is the light that lights the way, and the child celebrated is himself the light of the world. Joseph and Mary’s encounters reveal their unswerving love and devotion to God; and Jesus always sees and shares the Father’s love with us, even to the point of dying for us – the paschal celebration we celebrate at every Mass. In the Baptist’s family, we have the final piece of the puzzle from Advent to Christmas – the fulfillment of every hope and prophecy. If you are ready to accept him, John is the prophet long awaited that herald’s the long-awaited Messiah. Christ, the Savior is born! May you all discover the richness of the Christmas feast, and find in your own lives a new pathway from waiting and preparing (Advent), to celebrating and living (Christmas). Christmas Blessings to you and all your families and friends. May that Christ light truly shine! Fr. Brad Schoeberle, CSP Paulist Father and Pastor – Old St. Mary’s Church

Domestic Violence and the Holidays

During the holiday season, a stressful time for many couples, domestic violence increases dramatically. Let us pray for all victims of domestic violence and

their children. May they find peace and safety during the holidays and new year. May all perpetrators realize the harm they cause and seek help to abandon their violent ways. May we continue to work diligently to assist them in finding peace.

CHRISTMAS

A young mother, her eyes shining with fatigue, who is arranging her hair; a father who finds himself alone with his pretty wife and baby, straightening the stable to make himself useful in some way; shepherds who bring cheese and perhaps also some curdled milk; sheep who look at their shepherds while bleating; a donkey who is eyeing his manger changed into a cradle; an adorable swaddled baby whom one calls Savior, Christ and Lord: This is the manifestation of the goodness and the tenderness of God. This is the most fantastic birth in the history of humanity, the one which changed the face of the world! This is how far God humbled and compromised himself with us! This is Emmanuel!—From God’s Word Is Our Joy, Vol. 1 by Lucien Deiss, CSSp, copyright © 1998, World Library Publications. p. 73
