In fact, we were super competitive in all but two games for the season and we showed that we were able to compete with seven out of nine of the Premier Grade teams. St Kevin’s Old Boys (premiers) and Collegians (runners up) were clearly the standout teams in Premier ‘A’ section in 2018. To illustrate the competitiveness of the season, if we had been able to defeat University Blues in the final game of the home and away season we would have avoided relegation. A ten point loss away sealed our fate.

I take opportunity to thank senior coach Dale Bower, his coaching team, captain Jack Bull and his leadership group for the way in which they went about their business in a difficult and challenging year. I always say you learn more about people when the chips are down, and these people represented their club with distinction in season 2018.

The Men’s 2nd XVIII had a disappointing season, and the further the season went, the worse things seemed to get. We were competitive early in the season, posting a number of strong wins, but as injuries and unavailability’s presented, the Men’s 2nd XVIII dropped away and by the end of the season we were relatively uncompetitive. Murray Schneider is thanked for carrying the coaching duties out on his own, and Henry Dick did a good job leading the side in a difficult year. I believe the performance of this team in season 2019 will be a barometer for the club.

The number of injuries and unavailability also had an impact on the Men’s 3rd XVIII. The boys started the season positively but our performances dropped in the mid to late part of the season. The boys managed to sneak a place in the finals and were comfortably defeated by St Kevin’s Old Boys in the first week of the finals. Paul Gregor and Joan De Vond again did an outstanding job overseeing this team with a huge amount of care and passion. Skipper John Stavris led the team with distinction.

The Under 19 section was a real highlight for the year. A talented group were well led on the field by captain Austin Harding and were motivated by coach Mark Gnatt as they delivered the most successful Under 19 season in recent history. The team was relatively inconsistent

in the home and away season and were hard to get a read on. Some amazing wins were followed up by some confounding losses, but the come from behind away win against Old Xaverians will be remembered for some time. Charlie Cormack was the hero, kicking two late goals – the winning goal was after the siren – as we gave up our early lead in the last quarter to storm home in the final five minutes of play.

The boys earnt the double chance and dominated De La Salle in the first final to book a place in the grand final with a week’s rest. Old Xaverians thrashed De La Salle the following week in an ominous display. The grand final was played at Box Hill City Oval and after a slow start the boys held sway for much of the day, leading by 17 points midway through the third term. Old Xaverians seemed to steady late in the term and we were 10 points up at three quarter time with all to play for. Unfortunately we couldn’t take our chances and Old Xaverians were able to play the better footy when the game was up for grabs. To their credit they won by 9 points, kicking five of the final six goals of the match. The performance of the Under 19 team this year gives the club great hope.

The Under 19 Premier Reserve team also had an exceptional year, heading the table for much of the home and away season before bowing out of the finals series in straight sets. Mick Clearihan played a vital role in the success of all the Under 19 teams, and it was disappointing for all concerned to stumble in September. Our close association with the Camberwell Sharks and Camberwell High underpinned much of our success in the section, and the Camberwell Sharks under 17 Colts team continued to play a number of their home matches at McQueen Group Sportsground on Sundays.

This strong demand for football saw us introduce an additional Under 19 team one month into the home and away season. Club legend Terry Kendell stepped up to the plate to coach this team which gave a number of players a game week in, week out. While the boys had a number of significant defeats, they were often competing against other club’s one and only Under 19 team, and each week the boys turned up and gave their all. The one win for the season was celebrated with appropriate gusto!

President’s ReportTIM SHEARER

In a mixed year the highlight of the 2018 season was undoubtedly the club’s introduction of the Old Scotch Stars – our first women’s football team.

The Stars, a joint venture with MLC, added so much to the club in so many ways. In their first season the girls played some exceptional football which bodes well for the future. Our young team competed well with bigger and stronger opponents but were able to break games open on the outside with their skill, pace and fitness. It was disappointing not to go all the way and win the premiership in our inaugural year, but finishing second to eventual premiers Old Haileybury was a fine first up effort. Ryan Duke and Brad Jenkinson did an outstanding job coaching and developing the girls and Anna Hayes was an outstanding captain both on and off the field. I thank MLC for supporting this initiative so enthusiastically and we look forward to the relationship building in time. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Ian Hill for the power of work he did behind the scenes and on match days to assist make the season everything it was for all concerned. Former Club President David McCleery is also thanked for the enormous amount of ground work that he put into this initiative.

To support the introduction of women’s football the committee determined to launch a Cultural Alignment Program. Understanding the club would be a different, but better, place the Cultural Alignment Program involved various representative groups meeting to determine how the club should best look from 2018 onwards.

The group landed on a new club vision - “To create an inspirational environment for the development of young people” and developed four Quality Standards to underpin the vision –

1. Continuous Improvement 2. Teamwork3. Care4. Responsibility

The program was launched to the entire playing group and match committee in the middle of the year, and received a positive response. The introduction of the Player Support Program, which forms the central platform of the Care standard, is worth special mention. Players now have confidential access to an outsourced group of psychological experts at the club’s expense. I believe this program ties in directly with our vision and I hope that players avail themselves of the program’s services if required.

Despite many gallant performances our Men’s senior team found themselves relegated to Premier B section for season 2019. Losing the first 7 games of the season by a combined total of 81 points wasn’t the ideal way to start the season, but we did fight back to win six out of the remaining 11 games. It is worth highlighting that at no stage did the boys drop in their endeavour and intensity.

ON AND OFF FIELD SUPPORT

I take this opportunity to thank the committee, staff and volunteers this year, who have given so much to the club.

The hours and hours of time given by our volunteers who put the show on the road each week is not taken for granted. Thank you all. This year has demonstrated the level we need to be at both on and off the field when we return to Premier ‘A’ section. We are still some way behind many of the clubs we hope to be competing against, and we will continue to strive to close the gap again next season.

The appointment of Peter Simpson as full time General Manager is a signal moment for our club. The demands of running a club of this size and nature have well and truly gone past the remit of well-meaning volunteers. The club is like a small sized business in terms of its financial scope and its organisational complexity. Peter comes to us after a successful stint as General Manager of the Old Xaverians Football Club and their loss is our gain! Peter’s appointment will allow the club to prosper off the field and I look to you for your support as we transition in this space. Our volunteers will still be the life and soul of the club, as they have been in the past. It is critical that people maintain their degree of commitment to the club and I’m sure this combination will best position our club for future success.

Paul Gregor again looked after our Football Operations this season and I thank him for his efforts in a difficult year for him personally. Paul again worked in tandem

with John Zarb, who managed the premises and facilities. Both worked tirelessly on behalf of the club and the players this season. Christine Shearer was Club Secretary and Club Administrator, and handled both roles in her capable and competent way.

They were complemented by an outstanding band of volunteers who assisted each week on game day in many and varied roles. We are indebted to Jenny Watts who once again coordinated all our canteen activities on match day as well as meals on a Thursday night. Her efforts provide a great service to many customers and bring significant funds to the club. This is very much appreciated by all at the club, thank-you. We are indeed fortunate to have access to a wonderful array of well credentialed volunteer medical staff on game day, including Paul Davis, David Hays and Peter Sherwen. They complement and support Mark Fotheringham and his team of training and match day trainers and physios.

Thanks are also extended to the many people who waved the flags, checked off the interchange sheets, counted the time, ran the messages, filled the water bottles, threw the ball in, escorted the umpires, counted the kicks, marks and handballs, prepared the food, bought the snakes, served the beers, cut the oranges, warmed the sausage rolls and umpired the games. Without your contribution the club simply could not function.

The committee changed significantly from the year before, with a new Vice President and a number of new members working to the club’s 2017-21 strategic plan:

STRONG OFF IT: » To create a united and sustainable structure/model

» To bolster core business – football

» To have 250 non-playing members per annum by 2021

» To secure sponsorship income of $150,000 per annum by 2021

» To improve the home ground playing and non-playing facilities

» To employ a General Manager by 2019

» To review and recast the club’s values and behaviours

» To launch the OSFC Foundation with a membership of 100 by 2021

» To appropriately recognise the club’s centenary in 2021

STRONG ON IT: » Players to be invested emotionally, physically, competitively, community-wise, financially and socially

» Match Committee to work as a team and be supported, development focussed and tactically astute

» To win a Premier ‘A’ section premiership by 2021 – the first since 1978

» To win an Under 19 Premier section premiership by 2021 – the first since 1952

» To field two women’s football teams by 2021

At the conclusion of the second year of this plan I can report that much has been achieved:

STRONG OFF IT: » A new committee structure/model has been introduced, whereby the resources committed to football were significantly increased at committee level, in so doing, bolstering our core business – football. The club’s present committee is as strong as I have seen it in my time with the club

» Football continues to be what drives the club. The introduction of our first women’s team and the strongest performance in recent memory of our Under 19 Premier team this year was counterbalanced by the disappointment of being relegated from the VAFA Premier section

» 159 non-playing members signed up in 2017 and this increased by one to 160 in 2018. Membership will be a focus for 2019 as we look to underpin our financial position

» $158,000 of cash sponsorship support secured (up from $100,000 in 2017)

» A full time General Manager employed for the 2019 season, supported by a Facilities Manager and a Club Administrator

» The club’s values and behaviours were thoroughly reviewed and reshaped through the Cultural Alignment Program

» The club will launch a Foundation in season 2019

» Preparations for the club’s centenary in 2021 and an official organising committee will be formed late in 2019

STRONG ON IT: » Players were invested emotionally, physically, competitively, community-wise, financially and socially, but there is still room for improvement if we are to be successful in Premier ‘A’ section

» The Match Committee worked as a team and were supported, development-focused and tactically astute in a particularly difficult season for the Men’s 1st XVIII. Other coaches developed positively across the course of the season

» To return to Premier ‘A’ section with the momentum to win a premiership by 2021 – the first since 1978 – still remains an achievable goal. The club must, however, win the Premier B Division premiership in 2019

» The strongest performance in the Under 19 section for many, many years

» One women’s football team fielded in 2018 with a goal to field two teams by 2021

The CommitteeFormer Club President Peter Warner rejoined the committee and assumed the role of Vice President – Administration. Peter made an immediate impact with his ability to get things done.

Our relationship with City of Boroondara is again in great hands, as is the oversight of all administrative aspects of the club. Our return to a positive financial result is in no small part due to Peter’s oversight.

Roman Franetic again did a huge job as Vice President – Football. In a challenging year on the field, Roman again led the football department with surety and managed to keep things as positive as they could be with the difficult on field results. Roman was ably assisted by a number of people in the football department. Joan De Vond was Club and Registration Secretary, and again did this onerous and stressful job with great determination and a smile on her face.

Andrew Macmillan, another former President of the club, rejoined the committee after significant break and made a huge impact in his role as Treasurer. Our financial result this year speaks volumes for the attention that Andrew paid to overseeing both the expense and revenue aspects of the club’s operations. Strong revenue growth combined with strong management of expenses has led to a $60,000 surplus, which compares very favourably to our $36,000 deficit the previous year. Andrew was very capably assisted by Christine Shearer who does an outstanding job overseeing the financial administration of the club, even if I do say so myself!

Mick Clearihan oversaw the club’s most successful year in underage football. Fielding three teams was a massive undertaking, and the on field results were outstanding, clearly the best in recent memory. Mick has fostered some exceptional relationships with both the Camberwell Sharks and Camberwell High, relationships which I believe will be critical to the club’s future success.

Ian Hill joined the committee this year and did an outstanding job in overseeing our women’s football program. The first year was always going to be challenging, and the success of the Old Scotch stars is in no small part due to the time and devotion that Ian dedicated to the cause. We look forward to more people coming on board next season to assist Ian and the coaching team as they look to create an inspiring environment for the women who are part of this program.

Sandra Dick delivered the club’s social and events program. The season commenced with the Season Launch breakfast at Leonda and concluded with the Presentation Night at the cardinal pavilion. In between a number of excellent pre-game lunches, a Trivia Night and the Cardinal Ball were all hosted professionally, and assisted to raise important funds. Rob Millar, Melbourne’s Number One Property Advocate and membership salesman, again did an outstanding job driving the club’s membership program. Thank you for supporting Rob and his efforts.

Steve Bull looks after perhaps the most difficult portfolio. Our Corporate Partnerships are critical to the success of the club and Steve has built our program to the point where it funds nearly a quarter of the club’s annual operations. I would personally like to thank Angus McQueen and McQueen Financial Group for their outstanding support as major sponsors. Gus is an absolute marvel, as he commits to our club with both his time and his treasure. I thank him and his team for all they do for the club and I encourage you to give Gus and the McQueen Financial Group team the chance of winning your business.

I say the same about Jeff Halsall and Camberwell Toyota and Melbourne City Lexus. Jeff makes a huge contribution to the club through his sponsorship and the time he devotes in his role on the committee. How lucky are we to have these fine men associated with our club? Please also give the team at Camberwell Toyota the opportunity to get you jumping up in the air and exclaiming “Oh What a Feeling!”, or if your sights are set higher, give the team at Melbourne City Lexus the opportunity of showing you their amazing range.

I have mentioned Joan De Vond and Paul Gregor elsewhere, but I again thank them here for everything they do for the club. Tom Hamilton did a superb job delivering our social media program. This is a big job and Tom delivered it expertly. I thank the committee for their wonderful support, dedication and commitment.

CITY OF BOROONDARAWe are fortunate to have a positive, longstanding relationship with the City of Boroondara, and for this much credit must go to our Ward Councillor, Coral Ross. Coral has been a great supporter of the club for many years, just as she is a supporter of the provision of recreation right across her ward and beyond. The McQueen Group Sportsground surface was in excellent condition throughout the season, and the new floodlights were positively received by the players and coaches alike. I take opportunity to thank Coral and the City of Boroondara officers for their support. We look forward to continuing our relationship as we aim to keep our facilities in the top category of Premier Division teams in the VAFA

SCOTCH COLLEGE AND OSCAI acknowledge the Old Scotch Collegians’ Association for investing so generously in the club. We hope we do OSCA proud in the way we conduct ourselves both on and off the field. The School also deserves great credit for letting the club use its wonderful facilities for pre-season training, and for hosting the Scotch Football Day on Saturday 22 June, where six OSFC teams played at Scotch on the one day – a truly memorable experience for all concerned. This was again a special day for the club, and would not have been possible without the support of Principal Tom Batty and Bursar Ross Congleton.

VALE – GEOFF SPEED (SAMMY)

The club was saddened to learn of the death of former President Geoff Speed in September.

Geoff Speed was recruited from Scotch College in 1960. He played 144 games for the Old Scotch Collegians Football Club from 1960-1971. He played in our Reserves premiership teams of 1961, 1967 & 1969, and in the club 18 premiership team of 1971. Geoff went on to be President of the Old Scotch Collegians’ Association in 1992, and fifteenth President of the Old Scotch Collegians Football Club for five years from 1999 – 2003. He was awarded Life Membership of our club in 2003. Geoff died on 19 September 2018. His son Andrew Speed played 124 games for our club from 1992 – 2001.

FINANCIAL POSITIONThe club has made a cash surplus of $60,465 for the 2018 season. OSFC revenues rose 26.9% in season 2018, from $362,107 to $459,550, and our expenses stayed the same at $399,000. The most significant increases in revenue were in sponsorship (+58%). The biggest expense increase was in coaching, which increased by 19% from $69,565 to $82,047. This is an outstanding result and a credit to everyone associated with the club. It also is a significant turnaround to our 2017 financial result, a deficit of $36,894.

Other off field events and awardsTHE MICHAEL PERRY CUP

On Saturday 7 April Old Scotch played Old Brighton for the inaugural Michael ‘Mick’ Perry Cup at Brighton Beach Oval. Michael Wykeham Perry was born at Melbourne on 16 May 1944 and attended Scotch from 1958 to 1962. His links with Scotch are said to date back to his great grandfather, Charles Lindley Perry (SC 1852-62, for whom no primary evidence exists that he attended), but definitely begin with his grandfather Charles James Edward Perry (SC 1884-89). His father did not attend Scotch, but his son Burgess Edward Perry was here (SC 1986-88).

In 1962, Michael was recruited from Scotch College and played 59 games for the Old Scotch Collegians Football Club from 1962 – 1964, before being recruited by the Richmond FC. He was our club’s Best & Fairest in 1963 & 1964, and a Victorian representative in 1964. He then went on and played 53 games for the Richmond FC from 1965 – 1969.

Michael joined the Richmond FC in the VFL, making his debut on 24 April 1965. He played only two games in that first season, both in losing teams, and did not play again after having his jaw broken in Round 3. In 1966 he played 14 games, winning 10, losing three, and having a draw in one. In 1967 he was noted as starring at centre half back. He played 17 games in what was his best season, taking 68 marks and receiving three Brownlow votes. He played in Richmond’s premiership win against Geelong. In 1968 Michael played 11 games and scored two Brownlow votes.

In his final season, 1969, Michael played nine games, kicked all six of his career goals, and received one Brownlow vote. He missed playing in the 1969 Grand Final team after clocking a Footscray player in the last home-and-away game. His final tally was 53 games, six goals. His height was recorded as 191cm (6’ 3”) and his weight as 93.5kg. As a result of injury he only played at Richmond Reserve level after 1969 (1970-71), and then in local football competitions.

In 2000 Mick was named at Centre Half Back in Old Scotch’s team of the century. Mick is also named in Manson Russel’s team of the best ever Old Scotch players he has seen play – Manson described him as “one of the first picked in any team as he was a solid and tough well-constructed defender.” Sadly Old Brighton held on to defeat us in a tight contest to claim the first Michael Perry Cup.

Caption top-left bottom: Michael Perry holds the Michael Perry Cup. Pictured with him are Old Scotch Football Club vice-Captain Gene van den Broek, President of Old Brighton Football Club Shane Young, Old Scotch Football Club President Tim Shearer and Old Brighton Co Captains Dylan Verney and Harry Hill.

LACHIE BANGSLachie Bangs won the CR Newbury Medal, being the VAFA Under 19 Premier Section Best and Fairest award by a massive 15 votes from his nearest challenger. This was recognition for Lachie’s outstanding year where he dashed off half back to set up attack after attack.

RICK ‘COWBOY’ WESTERN WINS BRYAN GIBBS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD FOR THE SECOND TIMERick Western again won the Bryan Gibbs Distinguished Service Award in recognition of the outstanding contribution that he made overseeing the team management of the three Under 19 teams. Cowboys is undoubtedly a club legend; no one is more committed, loyal and dedicated to the club. How lucky are we to have him involved?

JOAN DE VOND WINS BILL PEARSON MOST VALUABLE PERSON AWARDJoan De Vond was awarded the Bill Pearson Most Valuable Person Award for her tireless efforts in her capacities as Registration Secretary - a massive task – and Team Manager of the Men’s 3rd XVIII.

THE 1978 PREMIERSHIP TEAM REUNITEThe 1978 A Grade premiership team came together 40 years on for a reunion dinner at the Grand Hotel in Richmond on Friday 4 May. The majority of the team were present and tributes were paid to their sadly missed captain John Anderson. Premiership winning coach Laurie Aghan shared with those present how he came to the club, some of the key moments that shaped the teams’ success and reminisced about the day where Old Scotch 16.16.112 defeated North Old Boys 16.11.107. Those who were capable turned up to join the club’s pre-match luncheon on Saturday. Fergus Kiel is sincerely thanked for his instrumental role in putting the reunion together.

DAVID HUGHES ELEVATED TO VAFA LEGEND STATUSThe VAFA announced this year that club legend David Hughes was elevated to just that….VAFA Legend Status! This was outstanding and well deserved recognition for Hughesy. The award was made at the annual VAFA Big V Luncheon. In 1961, David Hughes was recruited from Scotch College as a Junior player and debuted in our Seniors on 12 August 1961.

He played 163 games for the Old Scotch Collegians Football Club from 1961 – 1976 playing in the number “1” jumper. He was our club’s leading goalkicker in 1962, 1964 (also VAFA leading goalkicker), 1968, 1969 & 1970. David played in our 1965 B Section premiership team coached by Don Howell. He was our club’s Best & Fairest in 1967 and captained our club for three years from 1969 – 1971.

He was a Victorian representative in 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969 & 1971, and captained Victoria in 1969. He was also an Australian Amateur Football Council representative in 1964, 1965 & 1968, winning the AAFC Medal in 1964, and captaining the AAFC team in 1968. In 1970, coached by David Kidd, he captained our club to a B Section Premiership – Old Scotch 14.22.106 defeated St Bernards 7.9.51.

After retiring from playing in 1976, David served on the VAFA Independent Tribunal for 32 years from 1984 until today. In 2011, he was awarded Life Membership of the VAFA and named a “Big V Champion”. David returned to our club to manage our Under 19 Team for six years from 1998 – 2003. He was awarded a Life Membership of our club and named at full-forward in the OSFC Team of the Century in 2000.

OSFC SUPPORTS BREAST CANCER RESEARCH

Upon the initiative of current player Tom Holding the Old Scotch Football Club had a pink day on Saturday 5 May to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research.

The Holdings, and the Scotch Family, tragically lost Sally Holding to breast cancer 11 years ago. The three senior men’s teams and the Old Scotch stars women’s team all wore pink sox and each player paid for the privilege, with funds being directed to the cause. $1,000 from the raffle at the pre-match luncheon and the players purchase of sox was directed to the Breast Cancer Network. I hope that my report indicates to you that the 2018 season one of many highs and a few lows. Despite being relegated to Premier B, there is a lot to like about the club and its operations. It just needs that bit of success, which again alluded it this year. How good will it be when the tide eventually turns, all on the back of a lot of hard work and investment from many committed people?

REX MOSSOP SHIELD RENOVATED & RENEWED

On Saturday 5 May at the pre-match luncheon, club champion Tom Mason unveiled our updated Rex Mason Shield recording all our Coach’s Trophy winners. The award honours those deemed by the senior coach to have delivered for the team on the field. The shield is named in honour of Tom’s father, who tragically died one day when watching Tom play. The refurbishment of the shield, and the provision of a new one to accommodate future winners, was funded by members of the 1978 A Grade premiership team.

Financial ReportANDREW MACMILLAN (TREASURER)The Club made a net profit of $60,466 for the 2018 season. This was a particularly pleasing result and a significant improvement on the loss of $36,894 recorded for the 2017 season. Total Income rose by $97,443 (or 26.9%), driven largely by an increase in sponsorship income (+$59,074), player subscriptions (+$11,291) and “Other” Income (+15,204, primarily being some generous donations from supporters).

Sponsors play a vital role in supporting local sporting organisations and, as Treasurer, I would also like to add my thanks for the generous contributions that all the Club’s sponsors have made to the OSFC during 2018. In addition to the McQueen Group, Bendigo Bank provided significant additional funding during 2018 with those funds earmarked for a major upgrade to the scoreboard. The Club also received a generous contribution from MLC which, in turn, assisted the Club in fielding a women’s team – the Old Scotch Stars – for the first time in its history.

Equally important to this year’s result, however, was a renewed focus on cost containment/control with the Club’s Total Operating Expenses increasing by just $84 over the year. After also allowing for depreciation of the Foundation’s assets, total expenses rose by $4,831. Coaches’ payments rose by $12,482, VAFA costs were up by $8,929 (a very creditable result in light of the additional teams that were fielded in 2018), Functions and Bar expenses rose by $22,868 and $11,584 was

spent on Performance Analysis. In virtually all other areas, however, expenses were either in line with, or appreciably below, 2017 levels.

It is pleasing to report that the Club’s financial position is now much improved with Cash at Bank of $55,385 (as at 15th November). However, much work still needs to be done and several initiatives are being worked on by the Committee to generate further revenue growth in 2019 and especially in the areas of sponsorship and non-playing memberships. A particularly important initiative put in place during 2018 was the establishment of a relationship with the Australian Sports Foundation which will enable the Club to receive tax deductible donations in the future. We will have more to say about this to all our supporters early in 2019.

Finally, I would like to sincerely thank Christine Shearer for the tremendous work she has done behind the scenes and the enormous assistance she has provided to me and the Committee throughout the year. In addition, Steve Bull (sponsorship; bar), Rob Millar (non-playing memberships), Roman Franetic/Paul Gregor (Football Operations), John Zarb (facilities; bar; merchandise), Sandra Dick (Hospitality/Functions), Jenny Watts (kiosk), Joan de Vond and Jeff Halsall have also made extremely important contributions which have led to this year’s much improved result and, on behalf of the broader OSFC community, I sincerely thank them for their efforts.

Cultural Alignment ReportJEFF HALSALLWhat does the Old Scotch Football Club stand for? This was the question we posed ourselves earlier in 2018 and subsequently we went about creating the OSFC Cultural Alignment Program, the final version which is enclosed at Appendix ‘A’ in this report. A working party of stakeholders was put together including representatives of all playing teams, plus coaching personnel, committee members and subject matter experts. We met a number of times to carefully consider every last detail of the program.

We all agreed that the club was in excellent shape but we wanted a working document that effectively communicated who we were, what we stood for, and more importantly what the behaviours were that would drive the culture of the club. Below you will see a program which highlights a very simple mission - “To

create an inspirational environment for the development of young people” as well as four Quality Standards being Continuous Improvement, Teamwork, Care and Responsibility.

The Care Standard is supported by the implementation of the Player Support Program which has already received universal support as a critical initiative in helping our OSFC community. This program was presented to all teams, coaches and committee members through the middle of the year with excellent engagement from all participants. It was a clear goal of the Working Party to create a very simple program that was easily communicated that could be built upon in the years ahead. We will continue to focus on this program with particular club awards commencing in 2019 focused on the support of our OSFC culture.

Vice-President Administration ReportPETER WARNER, CITY OF BOROONDARA COUNCIL RELATIONSDuring the year we have had a number of meetings and discussions with City of Boroondara Officers on a wide range of items. Firstly in relation to replacing the front screen of the existing scoreboard so as to provide a full colour video scoreboard. Unfortunately because of the heritage overlay of the Sportsground site a planning permit is required before the replacement screen can be installed. This has taken some time but is currently underway.

We are indebted to Juliann Byron, Nick Coker and our local Bendigo Community Bank for once again providing the total funds to our Club and the Camberwell Magpies Cricket Club to be able to undertake this project.

We then had discussions on refurbishing the small Ratepayers Pavilion so as to provide additional change rooms to facilitate our Women’s team. This was done to a basic standard in quick time by Council which saved having to use Portables for the season.

Council then advised that they were planning a substantial upgrade to both the Main Pavilion and further refurbishment of the Ratepayers in adding back wet areas, for which the amount of $1.5m had been allocated. An application for an additional Government

Grant of $250,000 has also been sought to supplement this initial amount. The changes will be focused mainly around female friendly change rooms, umpires room, showers and toilets with some upgrade to the entrance (including the carpark), kitchen and storage, together with a lift to the upper grandstand seating. During the year we attended six Inclusive Club Program sessions for selected clubs in Boroondara initiated by Council and Access Health. This was established to assist clubs in attracting more female members, developing a culture accommodating both genders and providing a welcoming place for females to become part of.

Finally, we are also currently in discussion on the subject of being able to play our Stars games at 4.45pm at Camberwell immediately following the main Senior match on alternate Saturdays so as to become more readily a whole of club facility. This will hopefully attract more parents, Club Members, neighbours and supporters to watch our games and spread our Community spirit. We acknowledge and thank the various Council Officers in relation to all of the above, together with Cr. Coral Ross who continues to take an active role in the activities of her Gardiner Ward.

Vice-President Football ReportROMAN FRANETICThe season started with much anticipation with the senior men’s teams back playing in Premier A Section. After a solid pre-season expectation were high across all teams. The 1st XVIII had a poor but competitive start to the season. After finally registering our first win pushed hard towards a tilt at the top four. This did not eventuate with the last game to determine our fate in Premier A Section. Unfortunately we lost the game and hence relegated back to Premier B Section.

The competition in Premier A Section was extremely even, as the final ladder indicated. We were only comprehensively beaten twice during the season, with most other games coming down to the wire. Unfortunately we were 10% behind the general competition, this and more is what we need to find for the 2019 season. We need to take stock, work harder and smarter, and go all out for a Premiership tilt in 2019. Many thanks to all the coaches, volunteers, doctors, physios and trainers.

The 2nd XVIII had a competitive season with the top four continually in sight. Unfortunately a late season fade saw us finish in a close group in the bottom half of the ladder. The step up to Premier A Section was a test for our depth and this eventually was our undoing. The 3rd XVIII again had a most competitive season finishing sixth and playing off in the finals. The campaign was short lived but a great season was had in the very competitive Premier Section.

Both Under 19 teams had an outstanding year with the firsts playing off in the grand final and the seconds being knocked out of the finals after two losses, after being on top of the ladder for most of the season. Even though we did not bring home a flag, it was an outstanding season. We are looking forward to many of the boys stepping up to senior ranks in 2019, pushing the established players for selection.

This season saw the introduction of our women’s team, the ‘Old Scotch Stars’. After twelve months of planning, and a formal relationship being established with MLC, this eagerly awaited team was finally put on the park. Pre-season numbers for the girls were huge exceeding everyone’s expectations. The team had an outstanding year. After spending most of the year on top of the ladder, they played off in the Grand Final. The team won three of the four quarters but were unable to win the game. The extreme wind conditions were exploited by the opposition denying us a win.

After the highs and lows of season 2018, we eagerly look forward to season 2019. The senior men’s teams look forward to an immediate bounce back to Premier A Section, the Under 19 teams to continue their development pathway with on field success and the women’s team continuing to grow and becoming a major force in the women’s competition. A huge thank you to all the coaches, volunteers, medical staff for their time and dedication. Also a huge thank you to Scotch College for providing the school grounds for pre-season training and the football on Scotch day.

Women’s Football ReportIAN HILL (WOMEN’S FOOTBALL CO-ORDINATOR)

2018 marked for the very first time in the Old Scotch Football Club’s long and proud history, the registration of a women’s team, with the VAFA.

The OSFC Stars, in their inaugural year, competed in the VAFA’s Premier White section reaching the Grand Final. The OSFC Stars team was formed as a result of a joint venture between OSFC and Methodist Ladies College (MLC). On behalf of the OSFC I wish to congratulate the small team of OSFC volunteer supporters, all of whom are Old Scotch Collegians with daughters studying at MLC, and MLC staff for their foresight and efforts leading to the formalization of the agreement between MLC and OSFC.

Whilst the OSFC Stars fielded a most competitive team in season 2018 the most important aspect relating to the formation of the Stars will be both the quality and nature of opportunities the partnership now provides MLC current and former students and more broadly female football players who just love the game of Australian rules football and who want to be a part of a well-managed, well coached and caring club environment, something that OSFC offers all its players and support staff. As one example, in our first year, three OSFC Stars players were invited by the VAFA to train with the VAFA representative team which provided our girls a platform upon which to show case their talents and to expand their football horizons.

Over 90 girls and women ranging in age from 15 to 30+ attended pre-season training with the OSFC with the club taking a first up conservative approach of registering a single team for our first season, this despite significant preseason player interest.

By and large the introduction and integration of the Stars at the OSFC was frictionless albeit for some the idea of female football was a very foreign concept but one that they slowly but surely embraced. Given all the positive changes resulting from having such a wonderful group of women involved at OSFC, as football players, it would have been difficult for anyone to view the move by OSFC to field a women’s team as anything other than a spectacular success. In particular, the encouragement from mothers of boys at the OSFC for the establishment of the women’s team at OSFC was overwhelming and warmly received by all.

The club has established an excellent foundation of parents of players willing to volunteer their time and experience on both match day and at non-match day events. We will aim to expand and capitalize on the good will of our players parents in 2019 at the same time ratcheting up our efforts to attract new corporate sponsors and player sponsors from this group of supporters and more broadly.

I wish to thank our coaches Ryan Duke, Brad Jenkinson, and Joe Murdoch for a superb season characterised by your passion, commitment, professionalism and leadership qualities. I wish to also thank the club stalwarts who never missed a chance to help out and to offer advice which was always gratefully received and finally I wish to thank my fellow committee members who frequently were required to indulge me and women’s football talk at the monthly committee meetings.

Women’s Senior Coach ReportRYAN DUKE (WOMEN’S SENIOR COACH)

What determines success? Happy players, parents, quality wins and playing some good football? Tick. Yes, we did not achieve the ultimate goal in winning a premiership but we will all strive to improve as individuals and ultimately as a team which is our aim for 2019.

We were a very young side with the majority of the team under 21 which sets us up for some success in the years to come and hopefully these girls will develop the leadership skills to take complete ownership over the team. The 2018 season started with no expectations from a coaching group, we simply hoped to play a competitive brand of football and display the attributes of the girls to the wider community.

Our year started in pristine conditions under lights at Old Brighton and we found ourselves behind early but the girls showed competitive grit and came home to win against a quality side. It was the perfect start to the new team and the look on the girl’s faces post match was priceless. After the game we learnt three things: The Stars would be a quality side in 2018, Anna Hayes was the perfect choice as captain and a young star was born in young wingman Greta Larkey!

We played our best football for the year in this first 5 weeks where we were able to move the ball with speed and skill which resulted in us creating countless scoring opportunities. The team finished in second place and headed down the highway in the first final

to play Beaumaris. The girls executed the game plan superbly and were able to control the majority of the game to book a berth in the Grand Final.

Grand Final day didn’t play out how we hoped with Old Haileybury simply playing the conditions brilliantly early and not allowing us any space and were able to win a tight, scrappy affair and deservedly so won the premiership.

I would like to thank our coaching group Brad Jenkinson, Dimi Panotis and Jo Murdock for their continued work in developing and continually teaching the girls in a professional manner their patience and ability to educate was second to none.

Lastly a big thankyou to the Old Scotch Football Club community for embracing the girls this season in particular to Ian Hill who masterminded the team and lead it superbly off field. 2019 brings with it many exciting opportunities and I cannot wait to see the players develop their skills and leadership qualities and show the wider community that women’s football is here to stay!

Men’s 2nd XVIII ReportMURRAY SCHNEIDER (COACH)

The season for our Reserves was always going to be a challenge.

We stepped up to Premier A Section and played Old Brighton in round 1. We started the season well winning three straight. At the half way point we had five wins. In the next nine games we had a very good win over De La Salle and a heartbreaking loss to Old Melburnians (premiers) in the last minute of the game. The loss of key players after the break due to work, travel and injuries, started to hurt. Selection became a nightmare, ringing players on Saturday mornings. We used 64 players for the season including five Under 19s who performed well. The effort in every game could not be questioned, however our skill level at times was not up to the standard of Premier A Reserve Section.

The positives for 2018 were:

» Depth with Will Hamer, Cam Melville, Sam and Tom Anderson, Ben Hayes, Sam Dawborn and Charlie Long playing senior football

» Callum Golby returning, James Halse, Josh Gordon and Dom McDermott playing 3rds then stepping up to be good reserves players

» Beating finalists Collegians and De La Salle

» Award winners Charlie Long, Sam Neil, Angus Harlock and Dom McDermott, thanks to Henry Dick and Ed Furey, our team leaders and Chris Watts for helping on match day

Men’s 1st XVIII ReportDALE BOWER (SENIOR AND DEVELOPMENT COACH)

Obviously we are disappointed to have been relegated to Premier B section for season 2019, we were competitive in all but a couple of games. Too many close losses cost us in the end, one more win would have seen us hold our place in Premier A Section.

Every cloud has a silver lining. We played some great footy against some very talented opposition, at 0-7 we stuck together and battled on which I think is a testament to our character & leadership on-field. We exposed many young players to senior footy and we saw genuine improvement in many. It was also very encouraging to see several players promoted from the 2nd XVIII acquit themselves well and cement a spot in the senior team. Our under 19 teams had great seasons and we are confident we will inject some serious talent onto our senior list for 2019.

Speaking of 2019, I believe we are heading in the right direction. We are working hard to improve our coaching, recruitment/retention, player welfare and injury management. If we can be strong in these areas going forward we will put ourselves in a position to be contenders in Premier A Section. But first we need to win a premiership in 2019, a goal that we will not shy away from and we all need to play our part to ensure it can happen as they are always difficult to win, I can’t wait to get stuck into season 2019.

Men’s 3rd XVIII ReportPAUL GREGOR (COACH)

Season 2018 saw the Thirds return to Premier Thirds A Section and the VAFA decided to have a Final Six.

We were prepared for the challenges of playing Old Xavs Red and Black and also SKOBs Gold and Green. To get a place in the top six we needed to play good football against those teams and win games against opponents we believed we were better than. A number of players who played in the 2017 premiership team did not return and thus we had an opportunity to give new players to the club plus overage U19s games at this level.

Early into the season we lost John Stavris our Captain to injury and the “senior players” needed to step up and give guidance to the 1st year players. I would like to mention Hamish Dennis who took on the role as Captain and got the group to gel and make a real effort to get into the top six and hold our position. During the season 68 players played in the Thirds and whether they played the majority of games or only one or two, each player in every game was

committed to playing at their best and thus this resulted in the team finishing sixth. Our semi final game was not our best but I was very proud of every player who played the game out to the final siren. I am sure the experience for all playing in Premier Thirds will stand them in good stead for season 2019. Congratulations to the Thirds trophy winners.

Thank you to all the players who helped on match day whether asked or offered plus those parents who assisted. To Geoff McCracken for his continued support of the Thirds, thank you. Our season could not have run so well without the work of our Team Manager Joan De Vond who was such a strong support to myself and the team. To Dale and the Coaches, the Trainers and the committee thank you all. Finally to ALL Players I had one of my best seasons as your Coach, and seeing many of you improve over the season was very pleasing.

Men’s Under 19 Premier ReportMARK GNATT (COACH)

The Under 19 Premier team finished the 2018 season as Runner-Up after going down to Old Xaverians in the Grand Final by 9 points.

The team secured its second Grand Final appearance in the club’s history after a strong 34-point win over the minor premiers (De La Salle) in the second semi-final a fortnight earlier. At the end of the home and away season, the Premier team finished with 12 wins and 6 losses, which secured second spot on the ladder and a double-chance. We played 47 boys in the 1st XVIII and this included many Year 11 and 12 students from Camberwell High School and Scotch College as well as from the Camberwell Sharks JFC, which is our main local feeder club.

At the end of the 2017 season, the club set clear challenges to the under 19 football fraternity after identifying some areas of concern. This ranged from the lack of engagement in the club itself, at social events, at pre-season training and around an acceptance of mediocre football performances that had plagued the development part of the club for many years. With strong and unwavering support from Mick Clearihan and Gary Jackson the buy-in of the entire playing group was immediate from the first pre-season training session. We had more than 45 players at most sessions (unheard of during February in previous seasons) and this enabled the group to mould into one unit with a strong emphasis on setting standards and thus enhancing the quality of our training performances.

The quality of our pre-season was put to the test with a round 1 match-up against old rivals and regular finalists at under 19 level in St Kevins Old Boys. The Old Scotch team sent a strong message to the entire competition with a resounding 96-point victory at home in a performance that was built upon creating a positive and team-based culture across the pre-season. This now set the minimum standard for the entire season.

The subsequent results meant a top-two clash awaited in round 7 with reigning premier Old Xaverians in what would prove to be a season-defining moment. We were comprehensively beaten on the scoreboard by 78 points and the critics were queuing up to stick the boots in to us yet again. We were at a point where many had been before and there was a choice to be made. Accept the performance and roll in to the next week’s training on Tuesday night as though nothing had happened or challenge ourselves and the standards that we had set by facing up to the result head-on in a positive and constructive manner.

It would have been easy to blame injury and the unavailability of players on holiday, however we took the hard road. With engagement from the leaders and playing group, we commenced a high intensity fitness session each Monday night in the clubrooms under the guidance of a personal trainer as well as initiating an appropriate recovery regime utilising the ice baths. The first of these sessions was 48 hours after the round 7 performance and it had an immediate impact.

The round 8 match-up against fellow top-two contender in De La Salle had most pundits predicting a rapid fall from grace for Old Scotch. We had the game under control at half-time before De La Salle kicked 5 unanswered goals to establish a slight lead at ¾ time. Again, we had a decision to be made – allow the momentum to continue or step-up and show what he had learnt a week earlier. I am extremely proud to say that the boys stood up to kick the last 6-goals of the game to win by 27 points in what was a season defining moment and a highlight of the year.

It is fair to say that no highlights package would be complete without reliving the events of round 15 at Stradbroke Park against Old Xaverians. Aside from seeking redemption after round 7 and the usual emotion associated with a Scotch v Xaverians match, several players were returning from injury and overseas holidays to add to the intrigue of the occasion. Neither side knew it at the time, but the winner would finish the home and away season with a double chance and the loser would be relegated to third.

We started far stronger and held a 4-goal lead at ¼ time before both sides wrestled for momentum up until the ¾ time break. It was Xavs that took their opportunities with 6 goals to 1 to establish an 8-point lead with 90 seconds on the clock remaining in the match. With the ball in dispute across our half-back line, we were able to create a quick rebound before marking and kicking a goal to give us a chance. Thanks to Rick ‘Cowboy’ Western parking himself behind the goals to retrieve the ball and get it back to the umpires as quick as possible, we had less than 30 seconds to win the game. Yet another ruck hit-out from Will Griffin landed with Tom Blenheim who penetrated the ball into our forward line. In his first match in over 12-weeks and with cramp and 4-goals to his name, Charlie Cormack launched himself at the ball and took a strong contested mark 40 metres out from goal. The siren sounded, Cormack calmly slotted his 5th goal to see Old Scotch win by 4 points and the scenes were epic.

The match-up of Old Scotch and Old Xaverians in both round 15 and the Grand Final was a great example of under 19 football at its best. The fact that Old Scotch are now a part of this conversation and respected as a genuine player in the under 19 circles is testament to the hard work of this playing group and the coaching team as a whole. This has been my most rewarding season as a player or coach in football and I sincerely thank each player and the team around me for making it an outstanding season on a few levels.

The playing group was ably led by Austin Harding and Ethan Maxwell as co-captains with support from Will Clark, Will Griffin and Noah Croes as vice-captains. Each of these young men have shown strong leadership throughout the season and have promising futures with Old Scotch. An extension of our playing group was James Ross as our team’s runner. Rossy takes great pride in his weekly warm-up routine and no doubt this was a factor in our regular strong starts. Thanks mate on behalf of the players and coaches.

A special thank-you to Mick and Jenny Clearihan for their tireless work behind the scenes and Mick’s impact on myself and this group has been profound. Thank-you to Mick, Terry Kendell, Gary Jackson and Barry Mitchell for their coaching assistance at training each week – they have an enormous appetite and passion for the game and have taught the players and myself a lot. Finally, a huge thank-you to Rick Western for his ongoing support in managing multiple teams and for coordinating the parent helpers each week. The success of a local club is built off the back of people

like Cowboy and we sincerely thank-him for his efforts and congratulate him on his recent clubman award for distinguished service to the OSFC.

With over 114 players representing the club at under 19 level in 2018 and in a time when many local clubs in both the VAFA and other suburban leagues are struggling to field one U19 team, this season will go down as a defining moment in our club’s history. We are proud of the legacy that has been created by the entire 2018 team and we look forward to building upon these foundations into the 2019 campaign.

Men’s Under 19 Premier Reserve Report MICK CLEARIHAN (COACH)

The Under 19 Reserves had a terrific season in 2018. The side won 14 games in the regular season to finish second on the ladder.

We unfortunately lost to Old Xaverians in a thriller in the second semi by 2 points and then went down to St Kevins Old Boys in the preliminary final and just missed a Grand Final spot. The season in my eyes was a real success though on a lot of fronts. We played nearly 35 boys in the reserves throughout the season and were on top of the ladder for the majority of the year and played with great spirit and effort in all games.

Boys you were a great bunch to coach. The camaraderie amongst the group was terrific and the support you showed for each other all season was great and no doubt resulted in us making the finals for the first time in the three years the team has been around. To this end I must thank the leadership group we had throughout the year and although we had a couple of injuries and brought in some boys to this group you all did your job well. So to Henry Malouf, John Molony, Ned Lindholm, Matt Chadwick and Lachie Padbury thanks boys you were a big reason why we had such a good year.

The season produced many highlights. Two of my favourite wins were the round 15 victory against St Bernards by a goal when they had at least 8 ones players in their team trying to make the finals and of course Padders goal after the siren at De La Salle , what a win that was. I need also to congratulate a number of boys who had terrific seasons. Locky Padbury won the VAFA goal kicking award and also finished runner up in the comp

best and fairest tied with Sam Hooper. Well done boys you can be very proud of yourselves. Our best and fairest was taken out by Luke Nichols who had a great season, runner up was James Tarrant who also won best finals player and third in our best and fairest was Angus Manson who was so consistent all year. The coaches award went to no doubt the heart and soul of the team in John Molony. John you are a star and thank you so much for all your efforts this year, well done to all of you.

Finally I need to thank a number of people. First of all I must thank our club legend Rick Western. Cowboy you are a star as well mate. Your efforts as team manager for both under 19 teams and especially the twos was simply brilliant. You do it with a minimum of fuss, always get it right and are just great to have around. I’ve really appreciated your help and friendship over the last four years and could not have done without you thanks mate.

Also I must thank my mates Gnatty and Jacko. Gnatty, the job you did this year as head of coaching was outstanding. Your efforts with all teams and the passion you showed all year was great to watch. The under 19s is in a great spot with you at the helm, Jacko. Thanks for your help at training my friend even though I had better drills than you. We had a lot of fun this year between the three of us and I hope that reflected on the boys. I really think it did.

To the committee headed by Tim Shearer and Roman Franetic, thanks for all your help and support throughout the year and also to Paul Gregor and especially Joan for all your work with registrations as well. Terry Kendell also needs to be thanked as well as Peter Edwards and Gregor Evans for their work and enthusiasm with the Third Under 19 side. Boys you were great. So all in all I think it was a great year in the Under 19 Reserves. Boys I hope you enjoyed the year, good luck if you are under 19 again next year and if you are senior age come back and enjoy season 2019.

Men’s Under 19 Section 4 ReportTERRY KENDELL (COACH)

We started the season with two under 19 teams and found that we still had numbers left over and decided to start up another side a few weeks into the season.

It was a tough but rewarding season with the guys only winning one game for the year.

I cannot praise the boys highly enough with the effort that was bought every week often not having a complete side. The idea behind this team was to play as many guys as we could. We had the chance to bring new players and the school boys into our group and give them the taste of what it’s like to be involved in a football club.

None of this could have happened without the help of Peter Edwards and Gregor Evans who were there every week to support the whole group. Thanks to Mark Gnatt and Mick Clearihan there help in organising and managing the whole playing group was done so well.

Social and Events ReportSANDRA DICKThe Season Launch Breakfast kicked off a busy social calendar for 2018. Held at Leonda by The Yarra on Friday 6 April, now a tradition, this breakfast was an outstanding morning of entertainment. Anne Wallington, the Head of Senior School at MLC deputized for Principal Diana Vernon and launched the Old Scotch Stars to a rapturous ovation. How fitting it was that club Number One Ticket Holder Susan Alberti, the ultimate champion of women’s football, was on stage with Anne and the girls on this momentous occasion.

Hawthorn Football Club President, past Premier and past Scotch Old Boy Jeff Kennett AC (’65) was our special guest of honour, and it was the President’s pleasure to interview him prior to him joining the panel, comprising Susan Alberti AC, MLC alumnae and Western Bulldogs AFLW player Jess Anderson, Nat Edwards from AFL Media and Campbell Brown (’01), who lightened things with some humourous recollections of his time in footy. Jack Billings (’13) had been interviewed one on one earlier in the morning. We sincerely thank each of the aforementioned for so generously giving of their time and talents to the club.

The ever popular Trivia Night was held at the Cardinal Pavilion at Scotch College on Saturday 28 April. A mix of senior and under 19 players, parents, coaches, administrators, wives and girlfriends ensured a night full of activities was enjoyed by all.

THE CLUB HOSTED A NUMBER OF PRE-GAME LUNCHEONS IN 2018

On Saturday 14 April the club held it first pre-game luncheon for the year where Kevin Bartlett and John ‘Dr Turf’ Rothfield held court. Kevin ‘KB’ Bartlett AM (born 6 March 1947) is a former Australian rules footballer and coach who played in the Victorian Football League between 1965 and 1983 for the Richmond Football Club.

He has played the third highest number of games in VFL/AFL history. He won five premierships with Richmond, and won their best and fairest medal five times. In 2008, he was listed by journalist Mike Sheahan as the ninth greatest player of all time in the AFL-commissioned book, The Australian Game of Football.

KB was joined on stage by his on-air co-host John ‘Dr Turf’ Rothfield, Scotch’s first and most prominent professional punter. Having spent so much time on-air together their rapport was first class, as Turfy reminisced about wagging school to attend his first Melbourne Cup, being former Prime Minister Bob Hawke’s personal tipster and betting rorts that have littered Australia’s history. KB delighted in sharing his many achievements with us, from being King of Moomba, to meeting the Queen on the MCG, to kicking 7 goals in a grand final against Collingwood. It was wonderful that Kevin’s Under 19 captain at Richmond, former Scotch PE teacher Don Davenport, and fellow Richmond premiership player Mick Perry were able to join us on this special occasion.

At the same luncheon members of our previous third XVIII premiership teams were honoured. The club has won three third XVIII premierships in 55 years (1971, 1995 and 2017), and it was wonderful to welcome many of those premiership players back to reminisce

about former glories. The following were presented with medals in recognition of their place in Old Scotch Football Club history:

» Peter Wood who captained and coached the 1971 Club XVIII Warriors first premiership team

» Simon Illingworth, coach of the 1995 Club XVIII second premiership team

» Scott Montgomery who was captain of the 1995 Club XVIII second premiership team

» Paul Gregor, coach of the 2017 Premier B third XVIII premiership and Team Manager Joan de Vond

» John Stavris and Richard Goodey, co captains of the 2017 Premier B third XVIII premiership team

We were also honoured to present Allen Morris with a medal. Allen was instrumental in the founding of the third XVIII in 1961. Club legend Geoff ‘Crackers’ McCracken is thanked for his role in bringing the reunion together so successfully.

The function coincided with the unveiling of the 2017 premier third XVIII premiership flag which occurred in between the men’s 3rd XVIII match and 2nd XVIII match at McQueen Park on Saturday. Terry Kendell unveiled the flag in windy conditions with Men’s 3rd XVIII Coach Paul Gregor and President Tim Shearer as the men’s 2nd and 3rd XVIII lined up.

The second pre-game luncheon – the Sponsors Luncheon - was held on Saturday 5 May. Approximately 70 gathered in the FAF Fleming Room to celebrate the contribution that women have made to AFL Football, and to recognize the 1978 A Grade premiership team who were celebrating their 40 year reunion. We were delighted to have Heidi Sutherland who sits on the AFL Victoria Board present. At the luncheon the President outlined how the Old Scotch Stars came to fruition, and the amazing impact that they have had on the club, and he interviewed coach Ryan Duke, captain Anna Hayes and vice captains Amy Arundel and Lily Goss.

He also interviewed club legend and 1978 A Grade coach Laurie Aghan who entertained the audience with his reflections of 40 years ago (Ed. note Sandra Dick is thanked by the club for her tireless efforts for presenting such a meaningful gathering). The players and parents outdid themselves with the best afternoon tea on record! Pink cakes and donuts headlined an amazing array of treats. Thanks are extended to everyone who contributed and made the day such a special one.

On the same day, and upon the initiative of current player Tom Holding, the club had a pink Saturday to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research. The Holdings, and the Scotch Family, tragically lost Sally Holding to breast cancer 11 years ago. The three senior men’s teams and the Old Scotch stars women’s team all wore pink sox and each player paid for the privilege, with funds being directed to the cause. $1,000 was raised to support the Breast Cancer Network.

The third pre-game luncheon was held on Saturday 26 May prior to our home clash against Old Xaverians as a tribute to successful former coach Don Howell, last Saturday 60 sat down to our pre-match luncheon before the Old Xavs clash to celebrate Don’s contribution to coaching our club from 1965 – 1968, and winning the 1965 B Section Premiership to return our club back to A Section in 1966 after five years languishing in B Section. Fourteen 1965 Seniors players, including 11 from the winning Premiership team, plus many other players, officials and supporters from Don’s era attended. There were nine apologies.

VFL/AFL Legend & Brownlow Medallist and close personal friend, Neil Roberts, outlined Don’s early playing career in Portland and his subsequent move to Melbourne to play at both St Kilda and Collingwood. 1965 Best & Fairest, David Birch, then outlined how Don was recruited to Old Scotch and how Don vastly improved the professionalism of our training and

performance. 1968 Club Captain, John Hay, then very amusingly recounted some of the football and racing anecdotes of Don’s career. Gibbles rounded of the tributes with some off-field stories about Don.

A card was circulated to enable members to record their memories of, and appreciate to Don. I then presented a medal to Don. Don was accompanied by his son Dick Howell who played 32 games with our club from 1989 – 1991. Don, now in his 80’s, was not only an excellent coach, but was a great mentor to many off the field, and as a result carried these friendships through to this day. To conclude, Ray Sneddon, who initiated and organised the tribute, was thanked, as was Sandra Dick who arranged the tasty catering and handled all the bookings and Ros Turnley who spent many hours restoring our 1965 Premiership flag so proudly on display. Players and supporters were furnished with a history of the 1965 premiership complied by Geoff McCracken.

The fourth, and final pre-game luncheon, was held on Saturday 28 July prior to our match against Collegians where the club was honoured to welcome many of its generous sponsors. The President presented the club’s Cultural Alignment program to all present and the feedback was very positive. Anne Wallington and Maria Mercuri from MLC then unveiled the new Old Scotch Stars honour board. Geoff ‘Crackers’ McCracken is not only thanked for overseeing this project, but he is thanked for the meticulous job he does updating all the club’s honour boards and its history. This huge effort, in collaboration with John Bell, will become even more apparent as we head towards our centenary in 2021. The audience were spell bound as Men’s 1st XVIII Assistant Coach Rob Patterson shared his life story. It was truly inspirational. In sincerely thanking Rob major sponsor Gus McQueen shared why he invests in the club he has loved for over twenty years.

The Cardinal Ball was held at Leonda on Saturday 21 July and was again the must attend event of the year. The night was a great success (Ed. Note Sandra Dick, Robyn Blenheim and their team are thanked for organizing such a wonderful event). The Presentation Night was held at the Cardinal Pavilion in late September. This event was fully subscribed and our award winners were appropriately honoured and respected. It was wonderful to have former club president Leigh McGregor on hand to present the McGregor Award for the Men’s 1st XVIII Best and Fairest award to jack Bull. The Winner Takes it All Raffle was also drawn on this night, in front of an eager crowd, with Roman Franetic taking out first prize, and generously donating some of the proceeds back to the club.

And despite the fact that a lot of effort went in to making our membership packages more attractive, membership revenue remained unchanged. So where has the Cheese Gone?

At present, our largest membership category is our Past Players who continue to support the club so loyally, even though they are no longer playing. The problem is that this group is not growing and the heavy hitting is being left to a small dedicated band of individuals which is not sustainable. For too long, the club has taken a soft approach to membership and this needs to change if we are to maintain our ranking as one of the best football clubs in Australia.

On closer scrutiny, the proportion of players that support the club tails off alarmingly after 1990. This needs to change and it is incumbent on the club to reach out to all past players who have left the club, particularly since 1990 and challenge them to support the club the same way past players have done for them when they were playing.

The other Category that remains largely untapped are the Parents of current players. Again, the club has taken a low key approach in the past but this too has to change. The argument for parents not taking out a membership are many but can I put it to you that when do you stop being a parent? Particularly in those early years post school.

It would be arrogant of me to argue that if you want your son or daughter to play for one of the best football clubs in Australia, there is a cost but reality bites and the club needs your support as a collective if we are to remain at our very best. The club recognises the enormous burden parents carry, and it is for this reason, that the club introduced Joint Ticket and Single Parent Categories which are the cheapest membership per person. But again, too much is being left to a dedicated handful of parents, and this needs to change.

Our Business Network Directory is now online and ready for business. Inclusion in the directory is included in all sponsorship and membership packages, and for players who are in full time employment, it is free. The concept behind this initiative is that by giving business to each other (support) you will get business in return. This directory will

also support employment opportunities for players, career advice and introductions which are becoming increasingly more important in the internet age we now live in.

The home game lunches continue to be popular with members across all age groups. A lot of thought has been in put in to how these events are presented to engage different areas of our football community. It should come as no surprise that Geoff McCracken, aka Crackers, is instrumental in bringing together our past players as a group to celebrate the past. This has become a regular segment of our match day entertainment and a reminder of how special our history is, and the enduring friendships that are made.

The luncheon with John Rothfield (1971) aka “Dr. Turf” and AFL Legend ”KB” Kevin Bartlett, both at SEN 1116, was a laugh a minute as was the lead up to the day. We only found out they were coming two weeks beforehand. According to Dr. Turf, they were always coming except they just didn’t think to let anybody know nor tell us they would be arriving late. That’s show business, speaking of which I would also like to thank past player, Tristian Foenander (2004 ) one of Melbourne’s rising sports commentators with Croc Media who interviewed recently retired Tennis Gun, Sam Groth at our Past Players event.

So now that we have found the Cheese, the challenge is to harvest it, and grow a membership base that is sustainable and which does not rely on the small dedicated band of individuals who support the club so loyally. I would like to thank every member for their ongoing support and the committee who are amazing. Special mentions to the legend Johnny Zarb, Sandra Dick, the Shearer family and Steve Bull for stealing my Cheese.
