Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

June 25, 2017

Brothers and Sisters,

Poor Jeremiah! Today’s first reading contains his

sixth lament or complaint to God for his suffering. His call

to prophesy came at a time when the Jewish people were

coming close to abandoning their faithfulness to God. He

began his ministry by first saying that he was too young

and inexperienced; he was dismissed, ridiculed and de-

nounced. He was highly unpopular, he challenged hy-

pocrisy and dishonesty and was the voice of warning. He

persevered, simply would not quit what seemed like an

impossible assignment, and in today’s reading tells us to

“Sing to the Lord, praise the Lord…” In spite of his trials

and hardships, he never lost faith.

Like Jeremiah, we are sometimes reluctant to take

up our calling to ministry. Each of us, upon receiving the

sacrament of Baptism, are called to be “Priest, Prophet and

King”. Baptism puts us firmly in the path of a life of

adventure and holiness and potential adversity. We don’t

have to take on a kingdom and an entire nation like

Jeremiah, but we can take on our own personal surround-

ings; our own personal kingdom. Do you see injustice next

to you in the form of bullying and step in to stop it? When

was the last time you fed the hungry by either making a

donation or joining an organization and supported it with

some of your time? Are you involved in any of the various

ministries of the church? There are many to choose from

and mostly require your faith and some time.

We will soon be losing a couple, Laurie and Ryan

Borden, who answered that call to ministry. They have

literally taken Jeremiah’s command to “Sing to the Lord”

to heart and have for many years assumed a ministry that

not only takes time, but talent. This weekend will be the

last weekend that the choir under Laurie’s direction and

leadership will be singing. I wanted to take this opportu-

nity to thank both Laurie and Ryan for their faith, their

talent and their commitment to San Miguel – we will miss

you! I’d also like to thank all the choirs and their members

for their commitment to music, for sharing their talent and

for enriching our experience of worship by leading us in the

sung prayer of all our liturgies. I like silence, but imagine

for a minute what mass, any mass, would be like without

some song in it.

Sing to the Lord!

Nadine
