COVID-19 and Our Community

The board, in consultation with the association manager, attorney, insurance provider, and other business partners, has been planning for contingencies that may arise in the community as a result of the spread of COVID-19.

Based on advice that has been circulated by the Centers for Disease Control and the Department of Health, we have detailed some possible scenarios and our current plans to deal with them. These plans are subject to change based on CDC guidance and advice from our professional partners.

Association operations. Security operations and association operations will continue as usual while following CDC directives regarding maintaining social distances, no personal contact, and sanitizing shared work spaces. Due to the nature of business regarding gated access and being a private community, the employees of the Association are considered Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers under the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) guidance on Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers dated March 19, 2020. Therefore, staff have been provided an exemption to carry with them to and from work since the Governor declares a Shelter in Place order.

Cleaning. The association staff has been extensively cleaning, disinfecting, and wiping down surfaces in guardhouse and Association office daily.

Meetings and events. The CDC has recommended against any gatherings of 10 or more people through the middle of May. Therefore, the Annual Meeting scheduled for May 3

rd

has been cancelled. Owners will receive the annual meeting information and ballots for the board election in the coming weeks, but an actual meeting will not occur this year. The Board will also be conducting regular monthly meetings by phone through the end of May. If an owner wishes to address the board, please contact the Association Office so the conference call information can be set up.

Staffing. The Association has twelve employees on staff. In the event we experience temporary staff shortages due to sick employees or if they need to remain at home, contingencies are in place to change from 8-hour to 12-hour shifts if needed. If necessary, maintenance may be curtailed until staffing levels return to normal and the coronavirus pandemic is better controlled.

If appropriate, the association may notify residents that an individual in the community has contracted the virus. The association is prepared to reasonably accommodate an owner who is sick by postponing violation hearings, extending deadlines on architectural applications, or granting payment extensions if appropriate.

This association will not and does not make any of the decisions mentioned above lightly. These actions are being taken to ensure the health and welfare of the residents of the community. We pledge to keep residents informed of all relevant developments and how they affect association operations.

It is also incumbent upon residents to take this situation seriously and do their part to minimize the spread of this deadly disease. The association highly encourages you to review safety guidelines and look for updates from the CDC, the local health department, and the World Health Organization.

Getting Out & About In Midst of the Pandemic

2

Over the last few weeks the “normal” everyday lives of people around the world have changed. Businesses have closed, jobs are lost, people can’t go out to dinner and a movie, vacations and travel plans postponed, schools and universities are closed, weddings and funerals are cancelled, and the list goes on. In the midst of the frustrations and disappointments of the mandatory life-style changes, it may be helpful to gain a new perspective on the situation. Below are some ideas to consider in order to get through these trying times:

• Our beautiful community is a great place to take a walk and view the amazing signs of spring appearing daily. Here are a few ideas:

It’s nesting season for many species of birds that have returned from their winter hiatus. Keep a look out around the bluebird houses, bat boxes, purple martin houses, and duck boxes our Wildlife Habitat Team are managing. A map of these habitats is included at the end of this publication.

Look for other wildlife in the community. Turtles, fox, rabbits, squirrels, racoons, deer, and even skunks can be seen on occasion. Don’t forget . . . it’s best to look but not touch (or feed) the wildlife.

Enjoy the beautiful landscaping throughout the community. The community’s signature Yoshino Cherry Trees are in full bloom. Dogwoods and azaleas are beginning to bloom as well.

Take a walk along the 3 miles of walking trails.

Walk your dog and don’t forget to use the dog waste collection bins.

Stop and rest at one of the benches along the walking trails.

Jog or ride your bike along the 12 miles of streets.

Go fishing! You don’t need to have a boat. There are plenty of community shoreline areas that are accessible.

And let’s not forget the incredible sunrises and sunsets that certainly take our mind off of things.

A few years ago a program called 'Neighbors On Call' was initiated. The program is sponsored by the Men's Bible Study group and now has a fairly extensive list of community volunteers who are willing to provide help to those in need in our community. Assistance can include things such as providing transportation to doctor appointments, making grocery and medicine runs, sitting with shut-ins while their primary care givers are unavailable, assistance and/or advice on home maintenance issues, hauling away debris, computer training/assistance, heavy lifting, automotive issues such as flat tires, dead batteries, etc. and many other services. In these difficult times these volunteers are willing to help within guidelines, such as social distancing, being recommended by medical professionals. Don't hesitate to ask for help if you're in need. Call the Association Office at 336-461-5344 and your need will be directed to appropriate volunteers who will address them.

Old North State is known for being a very caring community. With people focusing on social distancing and reducing errands in public places outside of the home, loneliness or depression may creep in. Here are some ideas of how you can help stay connected and lend a hand.

• Send cards

• Give them a call

• Pick up groceries

• Pick up medications

• Drop off a warm meal at their doorstep (of course give them a call and let them know it’s there).

• Make cookies

• Go for a walk with them

• Walk their dog

• Give them flowers

Do You Know Neighbors Who Are Isolated?

Handy Sanitary District is pleased to announce the expansion of its sewer service around Badin Lake. A new sewer line is being added from the corner where the Badin Family Restaurant and Dollar General are located to Highway 49. Several existing businesses have already indicated that they will connect to the new sewer line. In addition a few new businesses have indicated that they are also interested in a connection. One of the biggest reasons to build the line is to assist in the development of a new shopping center at the Highway 49 intersection. Handy Sanitary District believes that the new line is going to enhance commercial development near the lake.

Due to the Stay at Home Order issued by NC Governor Roy Cooper the regular Bulk Collection Day planned for April has been postponed until May. In the interest in community safety, the Board has determined this event is not an essential function during the current health crisis. Pending further virus prevention restrictions, the Bulk Waste Collection Day will be held on Saturday, May 2 between 8 am—Noon at the Community Waste Facility. If you need to dispose of bulk items in the interim, you may take them to the County Convenience Site located at 560 Blaine Road. They are open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday 7am-7pm. If you are able to wait until our May bulk collection event, you can start gathering lumber, furniture, appliances, computers, etc. that are not permitted to be left at the facility during normal operations. On May 2nd, personnel with a large truck will be there to accept and load your items so they can be taken to the landfill. Hazardous waste will not be accepted (i.e. paint, tires, oil, etc.). There is no charge to take advantage of this opportunity. It is provided as a service to assist homeowners in the disposal of bulk items. Please do not leave bulk or hazardous waste items at the facility at any other time. Additional bulk collection days are being planned for July and November. Dates will be announced once determined.

Spring Bulk Waste Collection Day: Postponed Until May 2nd

In January, a group of residents gathered at the clubhouse and were transported to Pfeiffer University campus on the Falcon Bus. This is an annual event the Pfeiffer Falcon Club hosts each year for residents of Old North State. The group enjoyed food, beverages, and watched a Men’s Basketball game against Greensboro College. Unfortunately, the group wasn’t successful in cheering the Falcons to a win and they lost 95-87. However, it was a fun field trip night out.
