Last December Rich DeWilde installed three stained glass windows in the chapel of the Trinity Episcopal Church (after significant fire damage in spring 2013). DeWilde used approximately 50% of the salvaged glass

from the damaged church for the two side windows while the center window was completely destroyed.

These beautiful stained glass windows took DeWilde over six months to create and rebuild. DeWilde explained this was one of his most challenging projects in 30 years, selecting handmade glass from Fremont Glass in Seattle to complete the windows. The Trinity Episcopal Church is located downtown.

  • Jubelalea festive winter aleenjoy layered flavors of warm spiciness, dried fruit and a hoppy finish. This year marks the 28th bottling of Jubelale, the first brew that Deschutes Brewery ever bottled.

This years label features an illustration by Taylor Rose. I wanted this illustration to be all about the beauty of adventuring on a cold snowy night. First Tracks First Cast is a detailed portrayal of a couple and their dog walking along a snow covered trail, peering into a trout-filled river, capturing the beauty and wonderment of the outdoors.

To create this piece I used a process of pencil, ink, watercolor, digital. Everything starts with a pencil drawing, is then inked with a calligraphy brush, and lastly scanned into the computer to be painted digitally with high resolution scans of watercolor brushes/markings.

Taylor Rose, who is now based in Bend, grew up in a small New Hampshire town and spent a childhood immersed in the nature that now inspires her art.

Deschutes Brewery now ships to 28 states and around the world from its main brewing facility located on the banks of the Deschutes River. Tasting Room hours are Monday-Sunday from 12-5pm. Tour available 1-4pm daily. www.deschutesbrewery.com

  • This past summer, the Old Mill District and the Les Schwab Amphitheater partnered with RRC Research out of Colorado, to conduct surveys. The goal was to capture a picture of who was attending our events and the economic impact these visits have on our region. We are excited to showcase the results. Here is a sneak peek from local writer, Ben Salmon.

The Les Schwab Amphitheater, just across the footbridge from the Old Mill District, enjoyed its biggest concert season ever in 2015, hosting 21 concerts from May through September that featured an impressive slate of headliners, including Robert Plant, Sheryl Crow, Phish and Willie Nelson.

But big-name musicians arent the only thing Bends most scenic concert venue brought to town last summer. According to a survey conducted primarily at events and online, the Les Schwab Amphitheater is not just an important part of Central Oregons cultural scene, its also a vital cog in the regions economy.

The driving force behind the amphitheaters economic might is people; more folks attended an event at the venue last summer than ever before. In total, around 120,000 people visited the Les Schwab Amphitheater, a number anchored by the ever-expanding Bend Brewfest and three sold-out concerts.

Along with our awesome booking agency, Monqui Presents, weve been working for years to establish this place as a destination music venue in the Northwest for both artists and music lovers, says amphitheater director Marney Smith. It required making some difficult decisions like closing the grass on the east side of the river, but the results are clear; agents and artists now know this is a venue and community that respects and values their music. It really feels like weve picked up momentum over the past couple of summers, and we couldnt be more proud of where we are and the future ahead.

Make no mistake, many of those 120,000 people are visitors to the area who stay in local hotels and spend money in local shops and restaurants. The survey found that about 71 percent of visitors to the Old Mill District said they had made the trip to Bend specifically for a concert or an event, coming from Portland, Seattle, San Francisco and beyond. (About 58 percent of visitors to the Bend Brewfest said theyd come to town specifically for that event.)

On average, those folks spent around $138 per person per day while in town. (Phish fans spent an average of $236.) More than half stayed in paid lodging for an average of 3-4 nights. If you do the math, visitors to the amphitheater last summer pumped upwards of $16 million into Central Oregons economy, a figure that certainly gets the attention of local officials.

The Les Schwab Amphitheater is a critical asset for Bends tourism industry and broader economy, says Doug LaPlaca, president and CEO of Visit Bend. Its large enough to single-handedly move the citys economic needle, which we saw time and time again this past summer.

The survey also found that 61 percent of visitors to Les Schwab Amphitheater had previously attended a concert at the venue -- a testament to its easygoing charm, which tends to attract return visits.

Speaking of return visits, some good news: Monqui Presents and amphitheater officials are already working on the lineup for summer 2016. Keep an eye on www.bendconcerts.com early next year for concert announcements and more.

  • 10 Barrel BrewingPray For Snow: This delicately balanced Strong Ale starts with dark copper color mixed with slight reddish hues and a light tan head. Big malty aroma with a Munich character give way to a slight caramel & toffee mixed with spicy noble hop aroma, all wrapped together with a medium-bodied mouth feel.

Ale Apothecary Be Still: An intentionally uncarbonated dark sour, aged in both rye whiskey and Oregon pinot barrels this limited brew is infused with cocoa nibs and cascara (sun-dried outer fruit of the coffee bean) just prior to bottling.

Bend Brewing Company Outback Old Ale: A rich, malty reddish-brown ale, this beer boasts a solid malt profile with hints of raisins, toffee and chocolate, underscored by roasted coffee notes. All of these flavors are balanced by using Nugget and Cascade hops which create a noticeable hop presence in the finish.

Boneyard Beer Armored Fist: This beer is an Imperial Cascadian Dark Ale, a style specific to the northwest. Boneyard and Three Floyds Brewery (Chicago) created this collaboration ale which is a very well-balanced, extremely hoppy black ale.

Ochoco Brewing Company Chocolate Porter: The Prineville-based brewery (formerly known as Solstice) has a new name that nods to their Crook County origins. Their mild porter is made with chocolate and black patent malts to lend a silky smooth dark chocolate flavor and coffee-like aroma.

A hearty helping of Northwest and British hops bring balance to this traditional winter warmer.

Three Creeks Brewing Company Rudolphs Imperial Red: This annual holiday release is brewed with eight specialty malts. Bravo, Centennial, Crystal and Chinook hops in the kettle balance the candylike malt sweetness while a dry hop blend with Amarillo hops adds a fruity aroma.

Wild Ride Brewing Mount Up Maple Brown Ale: Climb aboard and enjoy this deli-cious brown ale that has flavors of chocolate and caramel like dessert in a glass. The ad-dition of a maple from Canada tops this ale off perfectly, making it a beer that can more than satisfy a sweet tooth as you complete your wild ride.

Worthy Brewing Company Powder Keg Winter Ale: This red-hued ale is a festive IPA with loads of hop flavor and aroma. Piney and citrusy hop character is balanced by a generous dose of crystal malts making this an aggressive yet balanced beer.

With the cool weather comes the season for winter warmers, brewed up by our local breweries. Enjoy in front of the fire or coming off an epic day on the hill, theres a beer just for you this winter.
