A Message from the President

To Our Old Harbour Green Neighbors…

As we come into the summer months – and out of VERY WET spring months – we think about how fast Year 2019 is progressing and within a blink of an eye we will be getting ready for the holiday season! So, lets take a few minutes and review the first half of 2019… The HGA Board wants to thank those of you that have sent your 2019 dues to us – we have seen many of those payments come in through our newly launched pay on-line services and we are happy to see that innovation is being taken advantage of by you - Thank You to Jane Huang for helping the Board accomplish this new payment method! Another thank you goes to Jane for upgrading & maintaining the Old Harbour Green website for us - we continue to add OHG & Massapequa community events to the site so take time to check it out! Also – Stephanie Carter is maintaining our Facebook page and we encourage everyone to ‘friend & follow’ us via FB – thank you SC!! As you can see, we have entered the 21st century and are looking forward to improving the website & social media experience as we go into the second half of this year! We hope that many of you have noticed the finished products of the Bay Drive Front Gate entrance AND front property clean-up community projects – it was an All Hands On Deck effort by the board and several residents to get this done – but the BIGGEST THANKS goes to Stephanie Carter for her tireless efforts of coordinating the vendors and keeping everyone organized on these projects!! I think everyone will agree that it is nice to see our front property free of overgrown weeds & debris! We will continue to work on other community projects this year – specifically street signs that are in disrepair – as well as the ongoing upkeep and maintenance of the community. But we can’t accomplish these improvements – we can’t do the maintenance of our community – and maybe most importantly is that we can’t pay the front property taxes IF WE DON’T HAVE OUR NEIGHBORS SUPPORT by contributing their ANNUAL DUES! As mentioned earlier, we appreciate the 219 residents that have sent in their dues and we anticipate that many other families will be able to do so over the coming weeks!! In closing, on behalf of all HGA Board members, we wish all of you a Safe & Happy Summer!!!

Greg Lowrey HGA Board President

2019 Capital Improvements The HGA Board is pleased to announce the completion of two capital improvement projects at the front entrance property. Capital improvement project #1 Through donations collected from our neighbors in Harbour Green Estates and 2019 HGA membership dues, the HGA civic association replaced the rotted fencing and posts at the Bay Drive entrance into our community. Capital Improvement Project #2 Through 2019 HGA membership dues collected the entire front gate property from Bay Drive to Cedar Shore drive underwent a Wood Lot Maintenance conducted by Sav A Tree . This is the first time a maintenance specifically focused on a Tree lot was completed . These projects could only be done with the annual Dues paid by our residents! Thank you!! If you look closely at the front property you will see that all of the broken tree trunks and limbs have been removed along with weeds, all of the refuse and debris accumulated discarded and many years of fallen leaves blown out with only the bottom layer of leaves left that have turned to mulch. We are very grateful to Sav A Tree, Thomas Marshall, Arborist and crew for providing a premier service to our community.

History of Green Harbour Beach Club

“GHBC” opened its doors in 1958. Generations of families have made the Green Harbour Beach Club in Mas-sapequa their home for the Summer. We maintain over 2 acres of beachfront property on the Great South Bay. Our beach club showcases one of the best sunsets on the South Shore. We are a private member only beach club. However, what makes us unique on Long Island is that the Green Harbour Beach Club is open to all resi-dents with no-residency/neighborhood restrictions.

Why Join GHBC?

GHBC is a perfect way for your family to spend the Summer and create memories by making friends, enjoying spectacular views of the Great South Bay, and partaking in good old-fashion summer fun! Amenities include a full-size swimming pool and kiddie pool with lifeguards, beach volleyball, kayak club and storage, jungle gym/playground, basketball, handball, ping pong and an outdoor dining area with 2 gas BBQ’s. The beach club also hosts many social events, including Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day festivities, adult nights, kids crafts and activities, camp out night, and fishing contest. The Junior Civic Association is in need of Volunteers! Dear Harbour Green Teenagers, My name is Kyra Varley and I am the outgoing President of the Junior Civic Association. As a group, we hold meetings and volunteer at many of the community events, such as the Candlelight Tea Social and the Easter Egg Hunt at Sunset Park. If you are interested in joining the Junior Civic Association and volunteering at events like these, please contact me at (516) 743-7638 or [email protected]. The Junior Civic Association is a great way to get involved in the com-munity and get community service hours, however, it is not just for high schoolers. The new Co-Presidents of the Junior Civic are Ronan Varley ([email protected]) and Katie Dramer ([email protected]). I would also like to welcome the new Vice President, Sarah Lattime and thank them all for volunteering to join the JCA and continue this wonderful tradition of community service. Anyone who is interested is welcome to join, I started when I was in sixth grade! Being a part of the Junior Civic group shows a commitment to bettering the community and helping others. If you strive to use your time to make an impact in the lives of others and be a leader in the community, Junior Civic is the place for you.

S.O.S. (Student Outreach to Seniors) Anthony Abatemarco has graciously offered to lead the Student Outreach to Seniors (S.O.S) so we thank him for is dedication. Assisting the older members of our community is the most important thing we can do as a neighbor and resident of Old Harbour Green so if you are interested on joining the S.O.S., please contact Anthony at (516) 439-6599 or e-mail him at [email protected]

The SOS student volunteers help shovel snow after a storm for our neighborhood senior citizens. If you are a junior or high school student and live in Old Harbour Green, would like to join SOS and receive community service credit for school, please give Anthony a call or send him an e-mail. If you are already a member of SOS and would like to continue to be a part of it, please share this information with the President as soon as possible so he can delete or keep you on the list of volunteers. The past winter was fairly easy because of the mild weather but the upcoming winter could be harsh and snowy, so we can use all the help from students interested in volunteering.

Are You a Good Neighbor?

• Do you pick up litter around your property?

• Do you park your cars in your garage or driveway and not on the street?

• Do you store your boat at a marina and not on your property or driveway?

• Have you trimmed your corner shrubs to provide better visibility for drivers?

• Are you trimming trees that impede street

traffic? • Do you respect your neighbors and our

community by obeying TOB codes? • Do you support your Civic Association by

paying dues and attending our quarterly meetings?

We need your HELP!

WE ARE NOT CRYING WOLF! We need your help as a community to keep our streets in OHG safe for our children, bikers, runners, walkers and family pets. More times then not you will see drivers roll through, or ignore the stop signs completely; especially on Bay Drive and Cedar Shore. These actions have only gotten worse and those that are “too busy”, in a “rush” to get anywhere or simply distracted are putting their lives and the lives of others in serious danger. We are witnessing EXCESSIVE SPEEDING, TAILGATING, PASSING CARS ON THE LEFT and RIGHT when they are making turns and a complete DISREGARD for the safety of our neighbors. We have hit a critical point and must take action to greatly reduce these incidences. Please remind the drivers in your house to obey the rules of the road and to continue to keep our streets safe. Often times we are in a rush and act as if we are the only one on the road; however, that is not the case. Most of us live in OHG because of its beauty and the fact that it is a great place to raise a family so let’s continue to keep OHG a safe and beautiful place to live by obeying the stops signs that have been put in place to protect us.

The Old Harbour Green Newsletter is always interested in publishing information about the residents in our community. We’d like to share news about the college your child was accepted to, military service being performed by a family member, local community achievements, weddings, birth announcements, etc. Please contact the newsletter editor with your story at: [email protected]

OHG Membership: Having the honor to serve on the Harbour Green Association, we have had the opportunity to get to know the history of our community a little better as we delicately try to balance our roles as HGA board members and active members of our community that is home to 422 households. Although these two roles go hand in hand, we have the unique perspective of what makes our community such a wonderful place to live and more importantly what it takes to maintain it. It is the goal of our President, Stephanie Carter and the rest of the HGA Board to focus on the families of Old Harbour Green and the events that bring us together as a community. The Philosophy is simple; without our neighbors, there is no neighborhood. In the past we have benefited from a high percentage of paid members ranging between 250 to 283 with our most successful participation one time reaching approximately 320. Unfortunately, for the last couple of years we have seen a decline in our total paid membership. As a result, the HGA would like to initiate a renewed relationship with the members of our community. As you know, there are many community events which have become a tradition within Old Harbour Green. In order to coordinate and run events like the Candlelight Tea Social, Santa’s Toy Drive, Kid’s Holiday Party, Easter Egg Hunt and Halloween Parade, we must focus on increasing our membership and encouraging new members to volunteer their time. In addition to these vital community-building events, our biggest fiscal challenge each year is the cost to maintain the beautification of our front property, islands, and tree-lined streets as well as the ability to pay the more than $8,000 in taxes for the front property which accounts for 50% of our annual budget. The HGA’s goal beyond our financial obligations to Old Harbour Green is to bring our community of both old and new neighbors together through this renewed outreach and beautification initiative. With your help, we can honor these traditions for years to come and continue to make Old Harbour Green the most beautiful community on the South Shore of Long Island.
