9:15 AM - 9:35 AM SESSION ITOPIC #1: GENDERED LEADERSHIP: HOW TALENTED WOMEN THRIVECATHY TOMPKINSSVP of Information Technology & CIOChesapeakeIntroduction:Today, women make up half of the U.S. workforce. They start careers in business and other professions with the same level of intelligence, education, and commitment as men. However, according to Catalyst, women in Fortune 500 Companies only make up 16.9 percent of board of directors, 14.6 percent of executives and 4.6 percent of CEOs. There is a significant gap.

9:35 AM - 9:55 AM TOPIC #2: A WOMAN’S SECRET TO SUCCESS: DEVELOPING AND BALANCING SELF-CONFIDENCELAUREN DAUGHETY Vice PresidentVann & Associates PR + MarketingIntroduction:We continue to hear, read and see that as women leaders, we have to be able to “do it all” and do it all at the same time... be an effective career professional, wife, mother, sister, friend and the list goes on. Recent studies and surveys have reported that as women, we do not and should not feel guilty about not having to accomplish everything at the same time.

10:40 AM - 11:00 AM SESSION IITOPIC #4: BECOMING A PERSON OF INFLUENCEMAUTRA STALEY JONESVice President, Institutional Advancement & External AffairsLangston UniversityIntroduction:Women who break through into senior-level leadership roles get there by delivering results. In John Maxwell’s book, “Becoming a Person of Influence: How to Positively Impact the Lives of Others”, he lists a number of traits a person of influence should possess, such as integrity, faith, skills in nurturing, listening, understanding, empowering and connecting. This topic will discuss the real traits of an individual who has become a true person of influence.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

11:00 AM - 11:20 AM TOPIC #5: DEALING WITH PERCEPTION VS. REALITY: CAN WOMEN BE LEADERS?COL. LEA KIRKWOODVice Commander, 72 Airbase WingTinker Air Force BaseIntroduction:The increasing demand for diverse leaders at all levels of an organization has given a new focus to the question whether women can lead effectively. The myths of the past regarding women’s effectiveness as leaders have been discarded; as evidence shows that today more than ever women are succeeding. Although there are still many challenges and territory to gain, women have proven to have “opened the door” of traditionally male dominated fields.

11:20 AM - 11:40 AM TOPIC #6: STOP PLAYING SAFE: COURAGEOUS ACTIONS TO CREATE A BRIGHTER FUTUREKENDRA CLEMENTSVice President, Human ResourcesAGC Aerospace & DefenseIntroduction:In her latest book, Stop Playing Safe, Margie Warrell argues that we often know what we want to do but fail to do it because of fear of putting our vulnerability on the line. While not particularly fulfilling, we see the status quo as an easier and less scary option. There is proof of this as advances in brain imaging technology show that human beings are wired to avoid risk. It is easier to settle with the status quo than to take courageous action and make a change. But that leaves us with restricted opportunities to develop our potential and achieve our aspirations.
