Nathan Malmberg has served as our section’s Chemistry Olympiad Coordinator since 2008. After 4 years of service, he would like to pass the responsibilities on to the next per-son. Filling his shoes can seem like a daunting task. Howev-er he is willing to work with the new coordinator for a season or two to make the transition smooth and painless.

Each year, the Chemistry Olympiad involves 100–120 stu-dents from 5–6 schools. We are always looking for new schools to participate.

The responsibilities of the coordinator are spread out across the season. To give you an idea of the scope of the work, Malmberg has provided the timeline below.

October to January: Contact area high school teachers inviting them to participate in the Chemistry Olympiad.

January: Order exams for the local section competition.

ogies. The presentation will also provide specific exam-ples of how we are exploiting integrated metabolomics and metabolic diversity for the discovery and characteri-zation of triteprene saponin biosynthetic genes. This presentation also illustrates how cross discipline training provides for real world discoveries.

Lloyd W. Sumner Biographical Sketch

Dr. Sumner acquired his B.Sc. degree in chemistry and mathematics in 1989 from Cameron University in Law-ton, OK, USA and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry in 1993 from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK, USA. He then joined Texas A&M University, College Station TX, where he was the Director of the Mass Spectrometry Applications Laboratory and where he later served as the cofounder and Associate Director of the TAMU La-boratory for Biological Mass Spectrometry with Prof. Da-vid H Russell. He joined The Noble Foundation in 1999 and has risen to the rank of Professor within the Plant Biology Division. While at the Noble Foundation, Dr. Sumner has built a research program focused around the development and integration of large-scale biochemi-cal profiling of plant metabolites, proteins, and tran-scripts (metabolomics, proteomics and transcriptomics) for the discovery and characterization of the molecular and biochemical components related to plant natural products biosynthesis. He also applies these integrated omics technologies for greater insight into the physiologi-cal and biochemical consequences of gene expression and system responses to genetic and environmental per-turbations. In the process, he has published close to 100 peer reviewed articles and book chapters. Dr. Sumner’s research is supported by The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, The NSF 2010, NSF Molecular and Cellular Biosciences, the NSF Major Research Instrumentation program, NSF-JST joint Metabolomics, and The Oklaho-ma Commission for the Advancement of Science and Technology. Dr. Sumner is currently a Fellow of The American Association for the Advancement of Science, current Treasurer and past President of the Metabolom-ics Society, Co- founding Member of the International Advisory Committee for Plant Metabolomics, Adjunct Professor at Oklahoma State University Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and a Distinguished Alumni of Cameron University. Dr. Sumner serves as a Managing Editor for Plant Physiology and as an Editorial Board member for the journal Metabolomics.

Give back to the community. Give Oklahoma students en-couragement to explore Chemistry as a field of study—and possibly a career.

Nathan Malmberg has been on the faculty at Oklahoma Bap-tist University since 2005. He earned his B.S. from University of Wyoming and his PhD from University of Colorado.

WANTED CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD COORDINATOR

Our section needs a volunteer to serve as the Chemistry Olympiad Coordinator. Nathan Malmberg has served dili-gently for several years. Unfortunately for us, he needs to step down. Thus a replacement is needed. Interested persons should contact: Nathan Malmberg [email protected] or Donna Nelson [email protected]
