The Race For UK Shale GasThe Great UK Shale Gas rush of 2013 has all the features of a modern gold rush – small players risking their investors’ money and hoping that they will be the ones to strike it rich.In October, the chancellor threw his weight behind the rush, saying he wanted to “[open] up the newly discovered shale gas reserves beneath our land” and promising that the government would consult “on a generous new tax regime for shale so that Britain is not left behind as gas prices tumble on the other side of the Atlantic”.The big oil and gas companies have been notably less enthusiastic about shale gas – at least in public. The British Gas boss Sam Laidlaw and Christof Ruhl, the chief economist of BP, have both separately played down the potential in the UK, describing it as not a “game-changer”.So far, the UK’s nascent shale gas industry has just one big player – Cuadrilla Resources, which was formed in 2007.In February 2010 it received some serious financial muscle from Riverstone Holdings through its Cayman Island joint private equity fund with Carlyle, the US asset management giant. The two investors both hold a little over 40% of Cuadrilla. This gave Cuadrilla access to the funds it needed to begin serious exploration in the Bowland Basin between Blackpool and Preston in Lancashire where it has drilled six wells. Cuadrilla used fracking to explore for shale gas. But the controversial technique, involving the hydraulic fracturing of rock, was blamed for causing two earthquakes in Blackpool and drilling was stopped. Cuadrilla has now been given government permission to start drilling again. There is no immediate sign that returns on Cuadrilla’s investments so far will be quick. Cuadrilla lost £8m in the year to December 2011 and about £12m a year earlier. The 2011 losses were three times bigger than the company’s revenue.

With just one big beast in the shale gas jungle, it has been left to a collection of smaller and less well-known companies to make inroads.IGas Energy, which is listed on the Alternative Investment Market, raised £23m in January from a share placing to fund the £15m it needs to drill two wells to appraise its shale resources. But many of the other fringe players are much smaller.Take Gerwyn Williams, a serial Welsh energy entrepreneur based in Bridgend. Companies house shows he has 18 current directorships has resigned from a further 17 boards and been a director of seven companies which have been dissolved. One of his companies, Coastal Oil and Gas, is owned by Thistle Gas, which is owned by UK Onshore Gas. This company, in turn, owns UK Methane, which is looking to explore for shale gas in the Welsh valleys and near Bath. Some of Williams’s companies have offshore investors but one small investor is a company called Sigma Exploration. It has a director named John Killer, based in Beccles near Norwich. Killer has been around energy companies for many years.Indeed he and Williams both sat on the board of Seven Star Natural Gas until it was sold to the AIM-listed Alkane in 2011. Alkane insists it is not interested in shale gas. Whether it will be drawn into that arena remains to be seen. As a profitable listed company it is in a strong position to pick up smaller energy companies which do not have the resources to fund expensive development costs.Others who could potentially move into fracking in future are those currently focusing on extracting coalbed methane – the gas that is found combined with coal deposits that in traditional mining poses a risk of explosions that are dangerous for miners. Greenpark Energy for example is building a critical mass which would allow it to acquire smaller rivals. Dart Energy just about breaks even, while BCG energy is losing around £10,000 a year. Another company, Adamo Energy, has interests in both coalbed methane and shale gas but posted a net loss of £60,000 in the year to June 2011 and owes its parent company £800,000.But even if an energy company has no specific interest in shale gas there is always the chance that it may already have licences to explore land that may contain it. Some more conventional oil and gas companies are now wondering whether their hard pressed finances may be helped by pursuing shale rather than other forms or energy.

and complex offshore developments.”

Rosenberg WorleyParsons offers capabilities ranging from simple fabrication contracts to complex, multi-discipline EPC projects for process modules, complete desk structures and subsea installations, plus offshore maintenance and

Rosenberg WorleyParsons won the EPCI contract for the Kvitebjørn pre-compression project together with its project partner Fabricom in November 2010. The joint project team has undertaken detailed engineering, procurement and onshore construction of a 1,000 ton pre-compression module that was successfully installed on the Kvitebjørn platform in June of 2013. Currently Rosenberg WorleyParsons is busy with hook-up and installation work offshore at Kvitebjørn.

Rosenberg WorleyParsons Managing Director Kristin Færøvik says of the company, “We have had great success in attracting new employees over the last few years and the engineering department has more than doubled since 2010.

“Coupled with interesting work and a great working environment, we offer a unique opportunity for our engineers and skilled workers to interact closely throughout the design and construction process. This in turn provides learning opportunities and a real

sense of constructability and construction friendly design,” she reinforces.

Kristin speaks of the company’s vision, “We shall continue to grow market share and take on ever larger and more complex EPCI projects, as well as serve the customers that come to us for our fast

response time and high quality workmanship. Having become part of the WorleyParsons family we intend to increase the breadth of our offerings as well as grow in size.” The WorleyParsons family is keen to integrate Rosenberg WorleyParsons into the business across all areas.

WorleyParsons Managing Director of Hydrocarbons Brian Evans states, “Rosenberg WorleyParsons has an excellent record of accomplishment across the offshore oil and gas front-end engineering and design, reimbursable EPC, long-term

and operations, subsea fabrication, installation and hook-up markets. It is

an exciting time to merge Rosenberg WorleyParsons capabilities with the broader WorleyParsons business and deepwater specialists INTECSEA.”

INTECSEA is a recognised world leader in deepwater technical innovation. Senior Vice President at INTECSEA Richard Luff says of the merger, “INTECSEA is

Founded in 1952 by A. van der Velde as a non-ferro foundry, Winteb has grown into the world'slargest producer of seawater resistant aluminium (DIN1725) Air Pipe Heads and has become a well-known player in the maritime market.

History of Winteb: the first years

During the first years, Winteb was a classical foundry casting severaldifferent products for the local industry. New designs, spare parts, unique products in materials like aluminium, copper, aluminium bronze ,bronze and other non-ferrous materials were produced. Wintebdeveloped into an expert in non-ferrous castings with an eye for detailand quality. Several artists knocked at our door to have their work castedat Winteb. But even more important, Winteb became a flexible andinnovative foundry, with a solution to almost every problem. Throughoutthe years, Winteb grew steadily and more customers got to know us. Thebusiness expanded from local industry to nation-wide.

In the late seventies, Winteb started to develop its own products and custom-made solutions moreand more. Winteb also started to do more machining of their own- and customers' products.Investments in new machinery and production automation were made and Winteb evolved to ahigher level of production and machining, which eventually lead to a product focus, namely: Air VentHeads.

The Air Vent Heads became the core business of Winteb, more and more. This resolved in more investments in production and machining. Winteb hasbeen producing these Air Vent Heads since 1987, starting with theWIKO5000 series. The WIKO5000 series were a refreshing, innovative newdesign compared to existing Air Pipe Heads. maritime market with their product designs. Combined with thehigh quality level of their product range, in depth knowledgeand high service level, Winteb supplies costumer basedsolutions, to more than 67 countries in the world.Throughout the years the WIN2000 series has proven to be avery tough design. Where air pipe heads made of cast iron, welded hot dipped iron/steel or stainless steel constructions ofour competitors, corrode and have to be replaced, ouraluminium products last for more than 20 years! Our product isextremely long lasting and will pay off in the long term becauseof the low replacement and maintenance costs.

Introducing the HIAS

Because of its volumetric design we have achieved an on average higher volumetric flow. Especiallythe larger sizes have a phenomenal volumetric flow. Despite this phenomenal volumetric flow, insome cases forces were acting beyond us and caused suction blocking. This mostly occurs when usedon stability tanks, which have an enormous pump capacity and excessively high inlet air speeds, while operating on rough seas. Being known for their innovative character Winteb quickly started towork on a solution and came up with the HIAS design. Please see below graphics for moreinformation.Since the knowledge and experience is kept under one roof, Winteb can easily adapt to suchdemands and the ever changing ship designs in the maritime market, in order to fulfill the needs andwants of their customers. As for this new model, the development, design, casting, production, testing, machining, marketing and sales were all performed by Winteb. Results are astonishing andwith this execution, even severe circumstances can be faced. The patented HIAS technology hasincreased the maximum inlet air speed by a factor 4, which results into inlet air speeds of 40 m/s andhigher!

A proactive approach to asset integrity is becoming an increasingly important priority for Europe’s offshore oil and gas industry. Robust hardware has always been the engine of the industry but its condition – not just now, but for the years ahead – is coming under unprecedented scrutiny.

A confluence of factors – including ageing infrastructure, rigorous health and safety regulation and an intensifying quest to maximise the efficiency and reliability of operations in a tough economic climate – make asset integrity a more vital concern than ever.

Preventative measures are key, but the geographically remote, inherently hazardous and labour-intensive nature of the offshore industry present unique challenges. Having eyes and ears everywhere is an impossible demand. As such, operators are increasingly turning to wireless monitoring technology to act as a guardian in areas that manual checking cannot reach with sufficient regularity and rigour.

In response to the industry’s demands for a safe solution, the IMC Group has developed new monitoring technology to provide users with an alert when key pieces of equipment in hazardous locations are subjected to potentially damaging shocks or vibrations. The range includes an ‘intrinsically safe’ iteration of the ShockLog solution which has received ATEX approval, and a newly-developed asset-tracking tool that transmits live location and incident data via GPRS or Satellite networks, allowing valuable hardware to be monitored in real time while it is moved between sites.

The two units not only provide vital data exactly when and where it is needed, but also act as a visible deterrent against misuse or mishandling that can bring significant financial and reputational costs.

The company’s ShockLog range is well known across the logistics, industrial and aerospace sectors for its ability to record incidents when items are subjected to dangerous levels of shock or vibration, either in situ or in transit. But the new ShockLog 298Ex has been specially designed for the offshore industry, with ATEX and IECEx approval making it ‘intrinsically safe’ for use worldwide in zone 1 and 2 environments.

The ability to detect shock and vibration when drilling offers a huge advantage in terms of protecting equipment – and the workers operating it. For example, continuous monitoring of top drives can offer extremely useful surface-level feedback.

The ShockLog 298Ex is the result of significant research to determine what is required to enable oil and gas operators to anticipate problems at an early stage.

On the frontline, workers can be notified immediately when a predetermined vibration or shock level is exceeded, with various alarm modes including audible, visual, email and SMS.

Meanwhile, managers can analyse historical data reports that are transmitted to a central ShockLog interface database, via ZigBee RF links. Users of the ShockLog condition-based monitoring database are able to create direct connections via any web browser software within the same network or intranet. With the use of ZigBee to Ethernet RF receivers, a network of multiple ShockLog 298ex units and receivers can be created and all data visible via a single database.

Easily-integrated software is another important advantage of the solution, allowing users to programme their own warning and alarm levels, frequency of data collection and the setting of ranges in terms of acceleration or vibration.

Such systems are not just about flagging up potential problems. Users can also gain an insight into areas of improvement in how operational, shipping and handling processes are commonly conducted.

In cases where high-value assets are being transported between sites, a different type of scrutiny can become necessary. Following a direct request from a global operator in the offshore industry, the IMC Tracker solution has been developed. It combines real-time GPS tracking with shock and vibration monitoring, allowing valuable and vulnerable shipments to be monitored live via a map view which pinpoints the precise location of the shipment and provides immediate notification of the extent and whereabouts of any breaches of preset parameters.

It means assets can be redirected, if necessary, to the nearest checkpoint to diagnose problems – rather than damage being discovered only at the destination, or worse still, becoming evident even later, when the equipment is in operation and begins to malfunction as previously hidden damage takes its toll.

As a result of GPS location data, accountability for any such incidents can be accurately assigned.

The unit, small enough to fit into aircraft hand laggage, for example, contains an integral power supply which provides a reporting lifespan of at least four months.

The IMC Group is giving the offshore industry visibility in places that were previously impossible to reach, supporting the integrity that is vital to its reputation and its future.

Beitling Oiland GasChris Faulkner, CEO , talks to us about a well managed supply chainBreitling Oil and Gas is one of the largest independent oil and natural gas companies in the U.S. with proved reserves throughout most major basins in North America, with the balance in Canada. e company’s geographic focus areas include Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. e company was founded in Irving, Texas in 2004, on the fundamental principles of applying state-of-the-art petroleum and natural gas exploration and extraction technology to the development of onshore oil and natural gas projects. Its production operations supply liquid hydrocarbons and natural gas to the growing world energy markets and its founder and CEO is Chris Faulkner. In this article Chris talks about the importance of a well managed supply chain.“Looking at how we got to where we are today the upstream phase of our supply chain and logistics structure was characterised by a resource intensive process. Back then, data had to be manually acquired and we had to spend more money on research and development, so managing our supply chain eectively was critical. Today, we estimate that 18 per cent of our total operational costs are logistics and supply chain processes. Investing at this level is vital so that we can remain competitive”.

A Division of Worldwide Recycling Equipment sales, LLC

At left: WWR’s new Vulcan® IDR 8440, the newest addition to the Vulcan line of dryers and desorption units.

Worldwide Recycling Equipment Sales, LLC (WWR) is dedicated to

the recycling industry through its expertise in recycling equipment restoration and manufacturing, specializing in environmental thermal remediation equipment. WWR offers 25 years’ professional experience in the oil cleanup and reclamation industry. Its growth from equipment restoration and sales to manufacturing puts WWR in a unique position to find, refurbish and build equipment for the soil remediation industry that can tackle the toughest jobs at very competitive pricing.

Recently introduced is the Vulcan® IDR 8440, WWR’s newest indirect thermal desorption unit (TDU). This TDU consists of a 40’ x 7’ CORETEN drum with combustion chamber and burners as the primary thermal desorption unit. It comes equipped with a material feed system, material discharge system and vapor recovery system. (More information on next page.)

The three main uses for WWR’s Vulcan line are downstream processing to create useful commodities; drying material to save on disposal, storage and shipping costs; and soil remediation and cleanup from contaminants such as oil, mercury or pesticides.

WWR first debuted the Vulcan® IDR to 90,000 attendees at the 2013 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, May 6-9, 2013. One notable group of visitors at the convention were members of the Nigerian Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), whom WWR has worked with on several past and upcoming projects. Next WWR showcased its soil remediation and drill cutting cleanup equipment at the Gas and Oil Expo in Calgary, Alberta, Canada June 11-13, 2013.

WWR has the in-house knowledge and experience to provide customers with complete drying and remediation solutions to suit their specific needs. The engineering staff provides the capability to re-engineer and recondition any type of dryer to fully meet EPA, EU and BS standards. WWR’s indirect fired rotary kilns, electrically heated units and hot oil processors have been used to remove the hydrocarbons from drill cuttings and for drilling muds recovery at multiple sites worldwide.

WEEKLY43

Page 44: Oil, Gas and Shipping Weekly

WWR’s dryers have been used in various industries including food, pharmaceutical, auto-mobile shredded residue, plastics and bio solids, both nationally and around the world. With clientele reaching as far as Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Cyprus, Romania, Nigeria and the Middle East, WWR has become a world leader in soil remediation and drying solutions. On February 28, 2013, the Vulcan line was featured on FOX Business Network’s Manufacturing Marvels. Produced by award-winning producers Bob and Jerry May of Marvel Production Group, LLC. and narrated by acclaimed former FOX and ABC anchor John Criswell, the episode highlights WWR’s commitment to customer service and gives viewers an inside look into WWR’s manufacturing facilities.

Drill cuttings are considered a contaminated soil and should be treat-ed as solid waste when they come into contact with contamination sources. Drill cuttings can be treated and beneficially reused once processed through a thermal desorption unit, such as the Vulcan® line of TDUs, that ensures the hydrocarbon content, moisture con-tent, salinity and clay content of the cuttings are suitable for reuse. Through this process, the valuable drilling mud can also be recov-ered and reused. Thermal remediation is widely accepted and proven to be

the most effective method of removing hydrocarbons and other contaminants from soil or drill cuttings. WWR’s thermal desorption technologies

include indirect rotary kilns, hot oil processors, thermal phase separation, thermal distillation, thermal plasma volatilization and modular thermal processors. All offer various customizable options to meet customer needs and intended application.

Having a wide variety of direct fired and indirect fired rotary dryers, as well as proven technologies such as holo-flites, fluidized bed and retort systems, in inventory enables clients to clean contaminated sites to meet EPA, EU and BS environmental standards. WWR’s

engineers and technicians have the capability to design and build a Vulcan® dryer for any drying application.

The WWR technical team can design a system from scratch, as well as retrofit or troubleshoot existing equipment. The manufacturing division can custom build dryers and any component of a system, as well as refurbish used systems. Operators with 25

years’ industry experience are available to set up, install, commission, train or even operate these systems. The marketing and acquisitions departments are available to locate all necessary components. WWR is the only full-service company providing all of these services with both new and used equipment available on a worldwide basisWWR’s engineering, manufacturing, marketing and acquisitions staff pride themselves on working hard year-round to stay up to date on the latest industry and technology changes and advancements to ensure their customers the highest quality service and product available.

IDR 8440

The Vulcan® IDR 8440, WWR’s newest indirect thermal desorption unit, is used for the remediation of drilling mud and operates as a four-part process.

The material is transferred through the feed hopper into a pugmill equipped with a weight controlled feed valve. From the pugmill, the material is transferred to the feed auger that conveys material into the Primary Thermal Desorption Unit. The feed auger forms a seal to prevent oxygen from entering the system.

Primary Thermal Desorption UnitThe primary thermal desorption unit is composed of an indirect thermal desorption rotary kiln with com-bustion area, seals, tires, trunnions and burners. The rotary drum is a 40’ long x 7’ diameter CORETEN drum with flights and operates in an oxygen defi-cient atmosphere.

Material Discharge SystemThe clean, dried material is discharged to a water cooled discharge auger that rehy-drates the soil to cool it down. The steam from this process is extracted through a quench stack that removes any particulates before discharging it into the atmosphere.

Vapor Recovery SystemThe vapor from the primary unit is pulled into a high efficiency quench scrubber. Vapor not condensed is pulled through a shell and tube heat exchanger and into a knock-out pot to remove particulate. This fluid is pumped to an oil/water sep-arator. The non-condensable gasses are circulated to a thermal oxidizer, where all remaining hydrocarbons are destroyed.

Cygnus Instruments are manufacturers of Ultrasonic Inspection Equipment for use in a wide range of applications, particularly in the oil & gas and shipping industries. Our range of internationally renowned Ultrasonic Thickness Gauges uses a technique known as multiple echo. Pioneered by our company over nearly 30 years ago, this method, approved by all major classification societies, overcomes the problems associated with measuring metal thickness through coatings and on badly corroded metals. As minimal or no preparation of the surface is required, a considerable amount of both time and money are saved. Multiple echo also verifies each measurement taken before displaying the reading which means no erroneous readings are displayed. All Cygnus Thickness Gauges are simple to use, accurate, reliable and extremely portable. They all feature “Deep Coat Mode” enabling thickness measurements to be taken through coatings up to 20mm thick.

Internal CorrosionOil and gas pipelines suffer from internal corrosion leading to costly leaks and emergency repair work. When carrying out any repair work pipe wall thickness must be determined when planning the job. Complicating this process, pipelines often have protective coatings such as plastics or coal-tar. Removing these coatings is costly and impractical and renders the area prone to future accelerated corrosion. So, any thickness gauge needs to read the pipe wall thickness through such coatings…Cygnus - pioneered multiple echo technology is developed precisely to meet these Inspection, Repair and Maintenance (IRM) needs. The simple to use Cygnus multiple echo thickness gauges enables an operator to take accurate, reliable and repeatable measurements of remaining metal thickness without removing protective coatings. This saves time and money on labour and training whilst carrying out the inspection. It can even forego the need for specialist contractors normally associated with inspection and maintenance work. The Cygnus range provides thickness gauges to cover all predictive maintenance and corrosion monitoring needs of the oil industry, whether for rope access, offshore, ship survey or in hazardous environments.

CYGNUS INSTRUMENTSMarine InspectionsCygnus, with its roots in marine surveying, understands customers’ need for a simple, lightweight yet accurate and reliable thickness gauge for ship and marine surveys. The Cygnus 2 Hands Free Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge is well renowned by ship surveyors. It has an end-mounted clear OLED display, with a small, light yet rugged IP65 & IP67 rated enclosure. The belt/harness clip and neck strap facilitate one handed operation, very useful for rope access inspections. The Cygnus 4 General Purpose having the same rated enclosure features a large, bright LCD display, an automatic white backlight and simple menu driven operation. It is highly versatile and can be used in almost all industrial applications.

Subsea Thickness GaugingThe Cygnus name is particularly strong in the subsea industry, both with divers and ROV operators. The Cygnus thickness gauges, with robust housing, are reliable in the harshest operating environments. The Cygnus DIVE is a new wrist-mounted gauge for divers (300 msw) and has a live A-Scan display. Made from a tough glass-filled resin, the Cygnus DIVE can withstand the knocks and bumps of the diving environment. A large bright colour TFT screen displays the thickness measurements in big numbers that really stand out. The Cygnus ROV Mountable Thickness Gauges are available rated to 2000m and 4000m depths for use on work-class and medium size ROVs for subsea surveys. The CygLink software supplied, displays the time, date and thickness readings on the surface which can all be stored and logged. Additionally the Topside Repeater option enables the thickness readings to be displayed remotely and also overlaid on to a video signal allowing the measurements to be superimposed on the ROV’s camera monitor screen.

Heinen &HopmanEngineering BV

Headquartered in Bunschoten, The Netherlands, Heinen & Hopman is a leading specialist in HVAC systems and has a global client base that it services through its offices and agents worldwide.

Within the maritime sector Heinen & Hopman is renowned as an innovative and client-oriented business that provides innovative and bespoke solutions through working in close cooperation with their customers. Eric Stoffelsen is the sales manager for the offshore division which supplies the offshore industry. An employee of Heinen & Hopman since graduating, Eric says:

”It’s a good company to work for. Established in the mid 1960s it is still a family business and has a low staff turnover”.

On the subject of Heinen & Hopmans’s offshore operations he continues:

”As Heinen & Hopman, we specialise in providing HVAC systems for the nautical industry, including yacht building and shipyards, the navy, commercial clients, the offshore industry and most recently, offshore windmills. In fact the wind energy industry is now our biggest growth market in the North Sea sector”.

Indeed Heinen and Hopman’s success as an industry leader can be attributed in large part to its ability to be flexible in order to meet a client’s requirements, as Eric explains:

“Since the global downturn pricing has been our biggest issue, especially as we are having to fight local competition worldwide. As a company we work extremely closely with our clients, getting right into the heart of their business so that we can be a part of their team and offer the best solution to their problem. Within Heinen and Hopman we have a flexible workforce and can easily match the right person to the right problem”.

An example of how this pays off for the company is in its development for a client of an explosion proof compressor, which they have modified to be used in Zone 1 applications. These semi hermetic compressors are mainly used in offshore applications and are the only ones on the market that can be used in Zone 1 applications.

Another example is our especially developed Battery Powered Temporary Refuge Unit, which fully complies with the requirements of HSE (Health and Safety Executive) and ISO. This unit is not only sufficient for maintaining pressurisation in the TR area and keeping the accommodation at the ≥ 50 Pa. overpressure mark. It also serves as a battery powered HVAC unit. We have poured all our decades of experience in the ERP sector into creating a sealed accommodation that meets all the statutory regulations and much more beside.

Newest to market are Heinen and Hopman’s Turbocor Compressors, the world’s first totally oil-free, extremely compact, energy efficient and lightweight compressors. With a focus on the environment and cost savings, the world is looking for HVAC technology that makes a difference in efficiency, sustainability and applicability. While being exceptionally sustainable and compact, they have a long service life due to the absence of mechanical wear surfaces offered by frictionless magnetic bearing technology.

Heinen & Hopman is a regular attendee at the industry’s major trade shows, OTC Houston and ONS Norway or Offshore Europe Aberdeen. Eric says:

“Visibility is important and the big trade shows are vital for networking. Word of mouth is the key to keeping your business alive and growing”.

With the rich history behind the company and a positive outlook for the future, Heinen & Hopman can be assured of their continued place as a leader in the field.

LNG is a booming and increasingly important part of the Oil and Gas world, not only because its costs are so much less than petroleum, but also that LNG is a low emission product. But there are hurdles to overcome in getting the product out there, as Marcus explains: “ere is a high level of initial investment needed for conversion of old terminals and/or newbuilding and the challenge is to get investment into conversions and into infrastructure. Long term the cost benets are massive and the environmental impact is vital if we are to meet environmental targets. Leading on from this, we expect much of our future growth to come from small to mid scale LNG terminal building. ere is a big opportunity in the marine sector, with the conversion of carriers to be able to ship LNG. Again it comes down to investment now for long term gain”.

7 8 9

e engineering division of Linde has generated an order intake of about €3 billion in the last year and is divided into the business units petrochemicals, air separation, hydrogen and natural gas. Natural gas has generated around 1/3 of the overall order intake and the main operating bases are in Germany, China, USA and India. It has several legs e.g. natural gas liquids separation with main business being generated in the US due to shale gas and mid scale LNG technology, where our subsidiary in China is particularly strong. We also have workshops in Germany and China manufacturing heat exchangers for large LNG plants and our subsidiary Cryostar is showing great success in manufacturing re-liquefaction skids for large LNG carriers.

In building a successful business Linde has built up strong partnerships across the globe. Marcus expands on this: “We recognize the importance of networking and trade shows and exhibitions are important for this. One of the biggest for us is LNG17. As the world’s largest it brings us opportunities for strengthen our ties and to explore opportunities for new applications in LNG markets. Such opportunities open up avenues for the further development of our business.

Marcus anticipates that 2013 will generate a similar level of turnover to that of last year. Recent developments are focused in Northern Europe and the manufacture of small to medium LNG terminals. Specic projects currently in progress include a big job for Malaysia’s national oil and gas company PETRONAS as well as the building of a LNG terminal in Sweden.

e PETRONAS project is highly prestigious and comprises an order for a mid-scale liqueed natural gas (LNG) plant from Malaysia LNG Sdn. Bhd., (a production subsidiary of PETRONAS). e new boil-o gas re-liquefaction facility has a maximum design capacity of 1,840 tons of LNG per day and will be located in the Bintulu LNG complex in Sarawak, East Malaysia. e project is due for completion late 2014.

For more than 60 years, Jan De Nul Group has executed international dredging and marine projects. Also specialised services for the oshore oil, gas and renewable energy industries are a key part of the provided services. anks to a resolute investment policy in its own equipment, the vessels of Jan De Nul Group are the world’s largest and most modern and diverse. All activities, including civil works and environmental services, can be carried out from design to execution, supported by the in-house design department.

Services for the Oil & Gas Industryese works include, among others, shore approaches for oshore pipelines and cables, such as coerdams, tunnels and shore pulling, rock installation for the stabilization and protection of pipelines, ballasting of oshore structures, excavating ‘Glory Holes’ in hard clays for wellhead protection at more than 150 m depth and umbilical installation.

In 1991 Jan De Nul Group executed it’s very rst oshore project for Statoil. e company was in charge of the dredging and backlling of the trenches and shore approaches of the Zeepipe I. is pipeline runs from the Slepner eld in Norway to Zeebrugge in Belgium, transporting natural gas to the receiving terminal. At the time of construction, it was the longest and largest oshore pipeline in the world. From then on Jan De Nul Group non-stop executed dozens of oshore projects related to the oil & gas industry.

Subsea Cable and umbilical installationSince 2012 Jan De Nul Group extended their activities with the installation of subsea cables and umbilicals. Several vessels were provided with cable installation equipment.

e multipurpose vessel ‘Willem de Vlamingh’ disposes of a 5,400 tonnes turntable for subsea cable installation. is dynamic positioned DP class 2 vessel is also equipped with a fall pipe for accurate rock installation at 200 m water depth which makes it possible to execute cable and rock installation simultaneously.e DP2 subsea rock installation vessel ‘Simon Stevin’ and her sister vessel ‘Joseph Plateau’ have large, unobstructed a decks which are suitable for outtting with cable and umbilical installation equipment. With a total carrying capacity of 32,500 tonnes of rock and cable/umbilical materials, also this vessel allows for a unique combination of installation and stabilization/protection works.

Services for the Renewable Energy IndustryUsing the Jan De Nul eet together with the shared ownership of heavy li vessels, oshore services have been provided to the renewable energy industry including the design and installation of wind farm jackets & gravity base foundations, the ballasting and scour protection for gravity base foundations for oshore windmills, and the installation of inter array and export cables. e projects are executed on an EPC basis.

Jan De Nul Group executed the construction of the Karehamn oshore wind farm in the Swedish Baltic Sea. Jan De Nul Group was in charge of the design, construction, transport en installation of the 16 gravity based foundations for the 3 MW turbines.e concrete foundations were constructed on two pontoons in the port of Zeebrugge in a very short period of only 5 months. e pontoons with the nished foundations were towed to Sweden where Jan De Nul Group has prepared the seabed before the arrival of the foundations. Part of the subsea was excavated and replaced by an accurately levelled gravel bed in order to form a uniform layer to support the foundations. e heavy li vessel ‘Rambiz’, capable of liing up to 3,300 tonnes, had not the slightest trouble to place the foundations weighing up to 2,000 tonnes on the prepared seabed. To avoid the foundations from moving in case of extremely bad weather, the sha and caissons were lled with heavy ballast material. To avoid erosion of the surrounding and underlying seabed, a scour protection consisting of rocks was placed all-round the foundations.

TransvacEjector TechnologySpecialists- 40 years in Business

“We are proud to have just celebrated our 40th year in business”, says David Redgate, Transvac’s Chairman. “It’s a huge milestone for Transvac, but with 2013 proving to be another fantastic year on a number of fronts, there has been very little time to reect.” Transvac’s mission statement is ‘to be the worlds leading supplier of innovative, Ejector based solutions’. is has proven to be less of a target and more of a reality over recent years as their Ejector Solutions break new ground in the industry.

What are Ejectors?

Ejectors are pump/compression devices, with no moving parts. ey are also sometimes also known as Eductors, Surface Jet Pumps or Venturi’s. Based on Bernoulli’s theory, they utilise a nozzle to rapidly increase the velocity of a uid (which can be a gas or liquid) thereby decreasing its pressure. Within the body of an Ejector, the pressure drop across the nozzle creates a low-pressure region. is allows for a second uid to be sucked in to the ejector (as it is drawn into the low pressure region) and quickly mixed with the high velocity motive uid and then compressed up to a pressure which is somewhere between the ‘motive’ high pressure and the suction low pressure uid.

“e ejector’s performance at L2 platform is excellent to date! We started it up and, at maximum ow, we are seeing 0.9mln Nm3/d extra production in the suction as a result of the ejector. Great success for everybody! Well done and thank you...” – Client Comment

“It sounds very complicated but it’s actually a simple process”, says David Hoon, Technical Director. “We are using the energy from a high pressure uid to entrain and compress a low pressure uid. Our knowledge and experience allows us to determine the exact amount of compression an Ejector can achieve, to suit the demands of our clients.”

Ejectors oer obvious benets over traditional mechanical rotating technologies; no moving parts, no maintenance, no emissions, no electrical power or fuel requirements and compact size, making Transvac’s Ejector Solutions extremely attractive.

“We can achieve gas compression of up to 90:1 in a single, liquid motivated Ejector, which is very impressive”, comments Gary Short, Research and Development Director. “Since opening our Test Facility in 2010, our IP has grown considerably and our resulting Ejector designs have allowed us to oer a whole new level of performance to our clients.”

Production BoostingIntroductionTransvac entered the oil and gas industry nearly 20 years ago with their rst application for Shell to boost produc-tion of a low pressure well in the Sean Field in the Southern North Sea. In recent years Transvac has worked in close partnership with Caltec Ltd to develop the potentially huge ‘Production Boosting’ Ejector (Surface Jet Pump) market worldwide.

e need to maximise recovery and extend the life of a eld has become evermore important. With depleting reserves and traditional technologies operating at the limit of their capabilities, Ejectors oer an exciting range of opportunities to ‘boost production’. Most commonly, shut-in or liquid loaded wells can be revived, as well as satel-lite or stranded wells deemed too expensive to recover with ‘traditional’ techniques.

e key to these opportunities is in nding a suitable high-pressure uid capable of driving (motivating) the Ejec-tor. In many cases the motive uid used is energy normally wasted, thereby making the Ejectors free to operate;

HP WellIt is common practice to ‘choke’ high-pressure (HP) gas wells so as not to back-out nearby lower pressure wells sharing the same manifold or downstream production facilities. Wasting usable energy across a choke valve in this way oers no added value to production.

Transvac identies this wasted energy as a valuable opportunity. “We can use the nozzle within the Ejector to perform the role of the choke valve (by reducing the pressure of the motive uid to meet downstream process requirements) but also to generate, for free, a suction ow into the Ejector”, explains Peter Ainge, Marketing Manager. e suction created by the Ejector is used to reduce the Flowing Well Head Pressure (FWHP) of single or multiple low-pressure wells to increase their production. e Ejector then compresses the combined motive and suction ows to the desired export pressure.

Compressor RecycleAlso common, particularly in more mature developments, are Mechanical Compressor trains operating in constant recycle. “Production facilities are designed with particular throughput in mind. Over time, as production declines, mechanical compressors do not see the ows they were designed for. So Operators take some of the high pressure gas from the discharge side of the compressor, and feed it back into the suction side as a way of maintaining its operating envelope”, explains David Hoon. “It’s another example of available energy being wasted, energy we can use to drive our Ejectors”, he explains.

Transvac’s simple solution is to use the high pressure ‘recycle gas’ to motivate an Ejector in order to increase recovery from low-pressure wells. e Ejector then compresses the combined motive recycle gas and recovered low-pressure gas into the Compressor inlet, which not only increase overall production but enables to Compressor to operate more eciently. is process can be used as an eective way to de-bottleneck a Compressor train and oen eliminates the need to re-wheel Compressors. In some cases this technique can also be used to completely replace the rst stage Compressor with an Ejector, thereby saving maintenance and operating costs.

Production Boosting Ejector during installation on Ameland West Gat Platform.

“By installing an ejector in the recycle line of the existing compressor, we increased gas production by 15% and also avoided a second stage compressor cum re-wheel (est. savings some €10mln, rst gas acceleration one year). is concept uses the waste energy of the compressor and, combined with the simple eductor design - nomoving parts - it is both a more sustainable and lower opex alternative to get more out of

our reservoirs” – Client Comment

Stranded Wells, Long PipelinesEjector (Surface Jet Pump) Solutions have also proven eective at clearing liquid slugs and reducing condensate levels, particularly in long ow-lines. “By reducing the pressure of the ow line, even by a few bar(g), increases the specic volume and thus the velocity of the suction gas. Unlike Mechanical Compressors, Ejectors are can handle liquid slugs and condensate without damage. In 2006, Chevron used this technique on the Gemini eld in the Gulf of Mexico to boost production by 24% from stranded subsea wells, enabling recovery of over 2.5Bscf of otherwise-lost gas. 50km tie-back ow-lines were eectively cleared of condensate resulting in continued, increased steady production.

Patented Universal Designe ‘Universal Design’ Ejector, Patented by Transvac, features a removable nozzle and diuser section. Easily replaced, oen within one shi, the new internals keep the Ejector operating at its optimal design point and eliminate the need for a complete, new Ejector, should process conditions change over time. e Universal Design also allows for installation of the Ejector even before production conditions are known. When this information is then available, Transvac can oer fast-track manufacture and dispatch of the internal parts to have the Ejector in operation in a shorter time-frame than the supply of a complete new Ejector. Where data is available to map the decline of a well with some accuracy, a number of sets of internal parts can be shipped alongside the Universal Ejector ‘Shell’ (the main body of the Ejector) to ensure optimum performance over a number of years.

Transvac supplied four sets of internals for a Universal Design Ejector for NAM (Shell) for a platform in the Dutch Southern North Sea. Using free energy from an HP well, this Ejector brought back to life two wells that were dead, due to liquid loading, and remained in operation for seven years until the LP wells nally ceased production.

Subsea ProcessingAs the industry moves toward ‘subsea factories’, with more processing at the sea-bed, many traditional technologies are found wanting. However, Transvac’s Ejector technology is already qualied and has been successfully deployed for subsea operation. “is is where Ejectors come into their own”, says Gary Short. “No moving parts, no power requirements, no maintenance...its a subsea engineer’s dream”.

Transvac has been part of some of the Subsea industry’s most ground-breaking projects, such as for the Marlim, subsea separation and reinjection module, installed in the Campos Basin o the coast of Brazil for Petrobras and for Statoil’s Tordis Separation module.

Recent subsea development projects include performance mapping of ‘multi-phase’ Ejectors to pump and compress uids.

“Multi-million dollar Compressors using megawatts of power may be the answer for large elds, but Ejector technology oers a low cost, proven solution for smaller elds. Gary Short continues, “In many instances injection water can be used to motivate an Ejector instead of high pressure gas. ey can achieve very high compressions which allows are gas, oen close to atmospheric pressure, to be compressed up to a pressure, high enough to either re-enter production or be used as a fuel gas elsewhere on the facility. It’s a very eective solution and a great alternative to liquid ring vacuum pumps or mechanical compressors that are oen plagued with maintenance issues and high running costs.”

Ejectors have no moving parts are can be constructed from duplex, super duplex or 6MO thus making them an ideal choice for compressing sour are gas.

In some cases, the FlareJet systems can replace a mechanical compressor completely. is not only saves on the running costs and maintenance, but also eliminates the compressor emissions too. In particular the Bakken Shale in North Dakota has been inuential in turning the situation around and now the Texan Permian Basin is turning back around thanks to shale. Chris expands on their successes here and the impact on the US economy:“e situation at present in the USA is that we have a natural gas glut, so prices remain depressed. On the other hand, for many years the USA has been dependent on importation for its oil and currently we import 9 million barrels per day. However, thanks to the shale revolution we have for the rst time the ability to achieve independence on both sides of the coin. e oil embargo of 1973 proved to what extent the USA was at the mercy of Middle East suppliers, so the benets to us of becoming self sucient will be huge. We will be able to control the price of oil and gas, bring increased employment and boost the entire economy. Being in charge of our own destiny is massive”.

Breitling Oil and Gas has been instrumental in turning arond America’s domestic declning oil and gas production: “e Bakken Shale in North Dakota has been inuential in turning the situation around and now the Texan Permian Basin is turning around thanks to shale. We anticipate that it will take a decade to complete the turnaround and once that happens, the US will probably be the biggest oil producer in the world”. “We use community outreach programmes involving local town hall meetings so that we can better inform the public about fracking and its benets. It’s about talking face to face and trying to remove the fear attached to it. We have produced a video, ‘e Fracking Facts’, available to watch on YouTube. e potentially massive benets to local communities can be easily seen, once the fear is removed. For example, the oil and gas revolution has changed the whole of North Dakota for the better”.

e key to Breitling’s success and continued growth is built around a core set of principles by which the company operates. ese are to acquire oil and gas properties that give them a majority working interest and operational control or where they believe they can ultimately obtain it; to maximize the value of properties by increasing production and reserves while controlling cost; to maintain a highly competitive team of experienced and incentivized personnel and engineers; to remain focused in specic regions where they have a competitive advantage as a result of their ever expanding infrastructure, or where they believe they can ultimately obtain it; to acquire properties where they believe additional value can be created through secondary and tertiary recovery operations and a combination of other exploitation, development, exploration and marketing techniques. Chris Faulkner is an industry expert, a keynote speaker at many of the most important industry conferences.

Sensible Risk ManagementI’m sure you’ve all heard the stories about ‘elfandsafety’ stopping people doing worthwhile and enjoyable things, yet at the same time others are suffering harm and even death due to poor management and complacency. In some instances health and safety is used as a convenient and lazy excuse to justify unpopular decisions or cover up management failure. The fear of litigation of course does not help either. Often you will hear of events or activities being cancelled after many years of safely being run without incident. The excuse given is ‘Health and Safety won’t allow it’. Usually however, the risks are poorly understood, which can lead to the dreaded fear of being sued and insurance companies being unwilling to underwrite an event. If you believe some of the stories you hear, health and safety is all about stopping any activity that might possibly lead to harm, think again. Risk management should be about practical steps to protect people from real harm and suffering - not bureaucratic back covering. Instead sensible risk management should aim to seek a balance between the unachievable aim of absolute safety and the kind of poor management of risk that damages lives and the economy. To help businesses adopt a better approach to risk management, the Health and Safety Executive have written a common sense set of principles which should form part of any business management systems. (see www.hse.gov.uk)

The principles of sensible risk management:

■ Ensuring that workers and the public are properly protected■ Providing overall benefit to society by balancing benefits and risks, with a focus on reducing real risks – both those which arise more often and those with serious consequences■ Enabling innovation and learning, not stifling them■ Ensuring that those who create risks manage them responsibly and understand that failure to manage real risks responsibly is likely to lead to robust action■ Enabling individuals to understand that as well as the right to protection, they also have to exercise responsibility

Remember sensible risk management is not about: ■ Creating a totally risk free society■ Generating useless paperwork mountains■ Scaring people by exaggerating or publicising trivial risks■ Stopping important recreational and learning activities for individuals where the risks are managed■ Reducing protection of people from risks that cause real harm and suffering
