Health & Safety Management Systems
In the United States, two safety management systems programs are getting attention and gaining interest: OHSAS 18001:1999 Specification and a Standard-in-the-making i.e. ANSI Z-10.
This session provides the participants with insight to the background, drivers, requirements and where occupational health and safety management systems are heading in the future.

Health & Safety Management Systems
WHAT IS OHSAS 18001?
Internationally recognized model for Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) for management systems
Enable organizations to control their OH&S risks and improve their performance
Specification is intended to address occupational health and safety rather than product and services safety
![Page 4: Ohsas ppt](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022051515/54c922214a7959c6518b45c1/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)

Health & Safety Management Systems
WHY WAS OHSAS DEVELOPED?
In response to urgent customer demand for a recognizable
occupational health and safety management system standard
Need for health and safety management system that could be audited and certified
![Page 5: Ohsas ppt](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022051515/54c922214a7959c6518b45c1/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)

Health & Safety Management Systems
WHERE DID OHSAS COME FROM?
Thirteen co-operating organizations from around the world assisted in
development of this series
Spain, Malaysia, United Kingdom and several other European standards
organizations

What is OHSAS 18000 …...
Published in April 1999 by British Standards Institution
It is not a formal standard, an official British Standard, nor is it an official International Standard
Not mandatory - voluntary basis
![Page 9: Ohsas ppt](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022051515/54c922214a7959c6518b45c1/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)

ANSI Z10 vs. 18001
ANSI Z10– Will be a USA national standard in 2004– Developed in open, transparent process
(mfg., labor, insurance, ‘chamber’, etc)– See www.aiha.org for more detail
BSI 18001– Not a standard, even in UK– Developed by 10 CRBs and BSI, NSAI, and
SABS– BSI and NSAI are also CRBs– Revised and adopted as standard by some
countries (Australia, China, Israel, …)

Summary
Some variation, mostly due to subject matter
Requirements from one standard would not harm other standard’s requirements
Integration of ISO 14001 and Z10 standards CAN occur and should certainly be encouraged
