With the holiday season behind us fashion delivers a more relaxed mood, a perfect and much welcomed counterpart to last month’s high voltage pieces. For those looking for a stylish downtime, modern classics will definitely hit the mark be it a much-coveted camel

coat or a pair of classic men’s-inspired brogues; it’s chic simplicity at its best. There is nothing understated though in the flamboyant and magical creations of Milliner extraordinaire Stephen Jones as our cover model Erin O’Connor proves donning one of his pieces. He and London-based designer L’Wren Scott shared their pearls of fashion wisdom when they sat down with us to talk books, Barbies, and sweet wrappers; it’s true

inspiration takes on the weirdest of forms! For some added glamour, we simply needed to add some in, and in preparation for Doha’s Jewellery and Watch exhibition next February, we narrowed down our picks of the most lavish jewels to shine in. Our interview with Chopard’s Co-President Karl-Friedrich

Scheufele had us also exploring the world of luxury, with dreamy diamonds and beautiful timepieces.

Finally, this month’s star, world-renowned Soprano Sarah Brightman, gave us a candid look into her life away from the stage, sharing her obsession with space and dreams of

traveling beyond earth. It is an issue with a brilliant mix of high fashion and luxury that perfectly symbolizes an

exciting new year. Enjoy!

InspIrIng MIndsWith the fashion scene slowly growing here in Doha, two of the hottest names in the industry, L’Wren Scott and Stephen Jones, descended on the capital to present a retrospective of their work at Mathaf and share pearls of fashion

L’Wren Scott

Page 39: Ohlala! Qatar January Issue

www.ohlala-magazine.com 39OHLALA!

“My parents taught me about work and the importance of education and my mother said if you want something in life you have to go out and work for it, it’s not going to find you,” says L’Wren Scott during an intimate conversation with fashion students and fans in Doha.

Despite her parents not supporting her chosen career path, the advice her mother gave her is something that she has always stuck by and underscores why she has got where she is today. For L’Wren, there was never any doubt in her mind about what she wanted to do. She says: “From a very young age I was obsessed with clothes.” Aged eight she made clothes for her Barbie and then started her first foray into business by selling the clothes she made to her neighbours. Later, she accidentally fell into modelling after a photographer asked to shoot her and she realised that “it wasn’t that hard work and (she) could make money from it”, which would help her start out as a designer.

So after years honing her talents as a stylist and designer, L’Wren opened her own label in 2006. Since then her clothes have found form in the likes of some very famous names including Madonna, Angelina Jolie, Uma Thurman, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and Michelle Obama.

Long-term friend and collaborator the milliner Stephen Jones, whose hats were matched with outfits by L’’Wren during the Doha Fashion Exchange, says that he was a “late starter”.

“I think fashion found me and not the other way round,” he adds, “but after my first day in the hat making department I realised that that was what I wanted to do. And if there is one thing to learn is that you should always enjoy it. And I always have.”

L’Wren has some tried and tested advice for future fashion entrepreneurs looking to make their way into the industry. “I take my inspiration from anything, from nature and art and especially books, I am a great book lover. But most importantly,” she advises to anyone with a creative block of sorts, “is I always have a notebook with me so I can write down ideas, because if you don’t write them down you will forget them.” Stephen has his own unique way of inspiring his creations: “I have a carrier bag and every day I put one item in it, whether it’s a sweet wrapper or a train ticket, it can be anything. Then at the end of the month I tip it all out and most of it is a pile of rubbish but there may be one thing that gives me an idea.”

Roudha Center in Qatar was involved in developing and guiding Qatari fashion designers who took part in the Qatar UK Fashion Exchanges in both countries. L’Wren Scott, Stephen Jones and Nicolas Kirkwood, who participated in the Qatar UK fashion event at Mathaf have announced they will be taking on three of the Roudha Center’s fashion designers as interns at their fashion houses.

“In fashion you need to be fearless, to make bold choices and to own your own

bravery.” L’wren Scott

WOMEN TALKiNG

breaking new Ground in QatarOhlala!’s Josie hill sits down for a one on one with the anti-doping Lab Qatar’s new director of marketing and communications mashael al ansari who shares how she got to the top.

were either male or female. And attitudes were very different towards women working in male dominated industries like oil and gas.”

Although friends and family discouraged her from taking up a job offer to work at QAPCO, she counted on her father’s support and took the job anyway, driving herself to Mesaieed every day and working in a male environment.

“It was difficult,” she recalls, “I used to wear Doc Martins and some of the men disapproved and would say how did her parents let her work in Mesaieed. I had one guy who said I will not report to you, I will not report to a woman. I struggled a lot but I had two really nice bosses who gave me all the support. Now more women are working for oil and gas

companies, and now when I interview men for jobs they have no problem having a female boss so mentalities are changing, and today work places are generally mixed.”

Mashael says that Her Highness Sheikha Moza made a real difference, and she made what was unacceptable, acceptable; and today Qatari women compete for the same jobs as men in every field.

Mashael who won the Arab Business Award at the ITP Women’s

Awards in 2012 and sat on the judging panel for the 2013 Awards is “so in awe of this new generation of Qatari women,” adding, “people now are so much more cultured and globally aware and it’s nice to see that.”

Qatari women don’t come bolder and braver than Mashael. As the first Qatari manager woman to work for one of the oil and gascompanies in Mesaieed,

she led the way for other women to enter the industry and proved that with hard work, ambition and determination in the face of obstacles, women can do it all and have it all.

Now working as the Director of Marketing and Communications at the Anti-Doping Lab in Qatar; overseeing the project from its very beginnings to its official launch as a fully operational lab, this mother of five gives credit to her parents, husband and family who have “supported her through and through.”

As someone with a true global perspective, having grown up as an ambassador’s daughter living in Germany, Japan and then Saudi Arabia, Mashael returned to Qatar aged 19 to pursue her education in Qatar University.

“A lot has changed since then,” says Mashael, “when I started working in 1999 work places

known for her exceptional musical talents, for being discovered by and then married to the famous British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, and more recently for spending £20million on a proposed trip into space, Sarah is nothing short of exceptional.

Brightman, who began her career as a member of the dance troupe Hot, made her jump to stardom with her West End musical theatre debut in Cats. She went on to star in several West End and Broadway musicals, including The Phantom of the Opera.

After retiring from the stage she resumed her music career with former Enigma producer Frank Peterson, but this time as a classical crossover artist. Brightman is often credited as the creator of this genre and is considered among the most famous performers, with

worldwide sales of more than 30 million records.

Now, on top of her success on stage and her upcoming space mission, Sarah has recently been nominated as a UNESCO Artist for Peace.

She says: “It was a wonderful thing, I felt experienced as a person at the age that I am so I felt that this was something that I could fulfil. We are chosen as artists because we travel around the world and are constantly in the public eye, so we can help spread the name of UNESCO, and highlight it›s work.”

She adds: “This has been interesting for me because by travelling to space I am also hoping that I can bring focus to areas of the earth that I will see from that perspective, such as deforestation, plastic pollution in the ocean, and war zones. It’ll be an eye-

opener and reminder to people of what is happening on our planet.”

So why the focus on space travel and where does it come from? “I grew up in the 1960s and it was a time when everyone was talking about space exploration. Physicists were very relevant at that time, and I started to get interested in how many women were working in this area. I realised that they still make up a small percentage in the sciences in general so I set up various funds to help women who are studying these subjects to further their education.”

Sarah’s passion for music and love of the outer hemisphere and the physics of life are seen clearly on her Dreamchaser album cover with its huge amazing sky-like star-covered backdrop.

Sarah speaks about working with the composer Mike Hedges and the violinist and cellist Sally Herbet on the album

Dreamchaser.“I’ve known Mike since I was 18, but this is the first album that I’ve

collaborated with him. I was interested to see what would happen because I knew that his experience as an engineer and a producer would be good in helping me create the right soundscape and to bring all these pieces from different times and genres together.”

Sarah describes herself and Mike as similar, both having a “gothic” and a “spiritual” soul.

She says: “As soon as we started working I knew that this would be a challenging but very good journey that we would take together, and it has been.”

Sarah also gives credit to Sally Herbet who she says: “works very well with classical musicians in creating wonderful arrangement – as well as understanding totally the rock and pop world that we are often working within.”

Dreamchaser, which many critics consider to be Brightman’s strongest work to date,

reached No. 1 on the Classical Crossover Albums chart making it the seventh album for world renowned Soprano to reach this chart.

a tradition of excellence

A favourite amongst Hollywood celebrities, Chopard is not only famous as the jeweller to the stars, but also as the jeweller to Royalty, and that includes those from our

region. Their presence in the Middle East dates back almost 50 years, and the brand has since built a bevy of clientele who only go to the Swiss luxury jeweller when it’s glamour they’re looking for.

Founded by Louis-Ulysse Chopard, the Swiss watchmaker brought the blend of artistry and functionality to beautiful timepieces, and soon had Chopard’s watches gain a solid reputation among enthusiasts and buyers on an international base. In 1963 the luxury brand changed hands when Karl Scheufele, descendant of a dynasty of watchmakers and jewellers from Pforzheim, Germany, bought Chopard. Since, under the driving force of the Scheufele family, Chopard has experienced spectacular development, becoming world renowned for its creativity, its state-of-the-art technology and the excellence of its craftsmen. Nowadays Chopard is pursuing a time-honoured family tradition, producing spectacular timepieces and stunning jewellery.

Today standing behind the controls of the house is Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, the co-president of Chopard, who has proven time and again just how much he reveres classic watch-making and sharing his passion with this side of the world. “I remember the first time my father came to the region, it was

about 45 years ago,” says Scheufele, “Now we have over 70 points of sale with our top markets being Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait.” Here in the capital, the brand has noticed that two of their lines have grown to become the most popular - the quintessence of style and elegance, the Imperial line has proven a favourite amongst the ladies, while the Classic Racing line has quite a large male following. Scheufele says: “The Qatari client is always looking for something interesting, new and different so it’s challenging for us and we like it. They are quite the sophisticated buyer.” And to please such a buyer the Swiss brand offers their services to create bespoke pieces, giving clients the chance to create their own visions while still sticking to the DNA of the brand. These days in the Middle East the brand has found itself up against quite a few competitors, but as Scheufele put it “Competition is great, it makes you strive to be better.” And we couldn’t agree more.

Having moved up the luxury ladder, Chopard now stands at the top - leaders of their market. More than fifty years after his father Karl Scheufele purchased Chopard, the family tradition at the Swiss manufacture is stronger than ever with collectors and those interested in watch-making turning to them for the best timepieces. A collector himself of watches as well as antiques, Scheufele has managed to find himself an even bigger, pricier, hobby. “I collect and race classic cars,” he says with a sly smile, “I’ve lost track of how many cars I have now, even my wife doesn’t know about quite a few of them – I think though that’s for the best.” The avid collector also belongs to both the Aston Martin and Bentley club, and prefers classic cars more than modern cars. And with such fervor, it’s not difficult to see that for Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, haute horlogerie is in his blood, where he has brought passion and a collector’s eye to Chopard.

with a new year to begin, doha marriott Spa’s indul-gent micro retinol treatment is the perfect antidote to post-

WITH a PROMISE to rejuvenate dull January skin in just one treatment we were more than excited to head over to our 10.30 am appointment with Head Therapist, and skin whiz, Ms. Racquel Beltra. A quick tour of the spa and all skin details taken, Racquel explained the treatment. Increasingly women of a certain age- yes we said it, find that their skin shows signs of fatigue, and loses its overall freshness. The Micro Retinol treatment, which has recently been introduced, is a six-step one-hour treatment to turn back the clock. For

really good results one must do five sessions, but after our single treatment we were very happy with the results. Racquel starts off by cleansing the skin of any makeup with a cleanser, specifically designed for our dry skin. She then applied a light toner before applying the Micro- Retinol Essential peel with a brush. This peel consists of Retinol, Lactic Acid, Glyolic Acid. The Peel is applied for only seven minutes and gives off a tingling sensation all over the face.

The process is then followed by a quick wipe of the skin with very cold wet towels to stop the peel from continuing its work. You cannot over do the peeling process; otherwise it’ll leave the skin red and itchy. She then applied a Micro – Retinol Essential Serum- which had a refreshing smell of lemons and orange. This was applied for a total of three minutes using gentle strokes, and was followed by a Micro – Retinol Essential Mask.We were treated to a wonderful shoulder massage while the mask dried, then had another set of cold wet towels on our face. It’s important to remember that there is a continuous use of cold towels, so as to stop the process of the peeling.

The result? Beautiful skin that felt well and truly lifted. We would definitely suggest giving this a try!

Rolls Royce Phantom

A truly elegant and luxurious driving experience.

The Rolls Royce Phantom oozes sophisticated luxury; every single handmade detail of this automobile is pure perfection. The epitome of elegance, Rolls Royce has once again stayed

true to their motto “take the best and make it better”, just looking at this car brings a smile to your face and gives you a sense of what ultimate luxury feels like.

The sheer size and sleek long body of the Phantom give it a notable presence; wherever

you go, heads turn and other drivers keep their distance. From the first sound of the door opening and the aroma of the interior leather and wood, driving the phantom is truly an experience.

Sliding into the amazingly soft, hand-stitched leather seats, with your feet comfortably snug on the plush wool and leather floor, a plethora of chrome switches and controls concealed in the arm rest allows you to adjust your seat and steering wheel to be perfectly comfortable for you, the push of a button to start the V12

engine (which from inside the car is almost silent), then you’re ready to look out across the long super polished bonnet to the hand carved crystal angel that guides your way – this is luxury.

The back seats of the Phantom feel like a private lounge with the signature Rolls Royce touches, sumptuous large leather seats, an enormous amount of legroom, and that super plush wool and leather flooring again. Controls for all the stereo and temperature settings allow

you to be chauffeured around with your music and climate to your exact liking.

The signature old school style thin steering wheel and steering column mounted gear lever give a nod to the original Rolls Royce styling, however the technology behind both of them is most definitely not old school. Initially, I was nervous as to how I would manage to steer the Phantom, which is a 5 metre long, 2.5 tonne giant of a car, however the incredibly

smooth steering and completely unnoticeable gear changes immediately calmed me, even completing a tight U-turn felt simple. And parking is a breeze, with a very impressive parking camera system which ingeniously (I couldn’t quite get my head around how) gives a birds eye view of the car and its surrounding to help guide you perfectly into even the tightest of spaces (although when you pulling up in a Phantom I’m sure the Valet parking would be more than happy to help you wherever you go!)

With all this luxury let’s not forget what’s under the hood, the 6.57L V12 engine with 453-brake horsepower, the Phantom is not just a car to take for a Saturday drive. Clocking zero to 100-kilometres per hour in 5.9-seconds, not that you feel it from the inside even when the accelerator is down, the incredibly quiet interior feels nothing but calm, luxurious serenity.

The Rolls Royce Phantom is truly the best of the best, and somehow they have made the best even better. A truly elegant and luxurious driving experience.

“Rolls Royce has once again stayed true to their motto ‘take the best and make it better.’”

Women, Poetry and Art

Take a visit to the Pearl this month to catch the beautiful Andalusian inspired art works by

Jordanian artist Jehad Al-Ameri.ImAge by AbshAr @ CreAtIve DesIgn

Art it seems, is in the blood, and this is certainly true of Jordanian artist Jehad Al-Ameri who counts among his 10 siblings, several professional artists

and poets including himself.Jehad uses a mix of painting and printmaking and a

variety of materials in this exhibition to produce a multi-layered, multi-nuanced effect that draws the viewer in to the intriguing world of Andalusian art and poetry from the Arab era in Spain.

Jehad, who’s PHD from the University of Granada focuses on the relationship between art and poetry, believes that the two are connected. He says: “Their roots are the same, and the soul is the same, but it’s just a different expression of that feeling.”

The multi-layering of his work in Andalusian Curtain, reflects the different times of the past, the present and the two times together. Jehad explains: “The first layer is from the motifs of the Alhambra and the calligraphy of the poems in the past, after that I paint using some modern techniques and when the painting is finished, when people see my artwork is the third time or era - the effect of the two times mixing together.”

The 23 pieces chosen from the exhibition - although all on the same themes of poetry and art and architecture in Andalusia – differ in their colouring, and in the patterns, techniques, media and calligraphy he uses, not to mention the price tags. Several pieces have already sold so if you want one on your wall, you would be advised to go early, before the exhibition concludes on February 1.Andalusian Curtain runs until February 1 at Anima Gallery. Art hotspot Mathaf, the Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, hosted the fashion party of the year with its “An Enchanted Evening”. Featuring the biggest names from the London fashion scene, from fashion designers L’Wren Scott and Emilia Wickstead to milliner Stephen Jones, footwear king Nicholas Kirkwood and jewellery designer Robinson Pelham, the event included a runway show by the internationally reputed UK-based designers and female fashion entrepreneurs from Qatar’s Roudha Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The talented Qatari designers, Wadha Al Hajri, Elham Al Ansari, Fathiya Al Jaber, and Hessa Al Mannai, who had all showcased their designs earlier this autumn at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, presented their latest collections for a wonderful audience of the city’s who’s who.

MISS OHLALA!

ThE cOLumn

NEW BEGINNINGS They say a New Year brings new beginnings, so the fabulous team at Ohlala! felt it would be the right moment for my new monthly column to be born. So in order to keep my words honest and free we decided to hide my identity so I can discuss my escapades as a single 20-something girl living in Doha. From this day forward you will now know me as Miss Ohlala! - how sophisticated and allusive don’t you think? If only I could tell my frenemies and my Instagram followers.

Before jumping into a New Year, lets first discuss the best things about 2013. (1) I think you would all agree that removing the roundabouts was a brilliant move. It was painful to live through the construction but now that it’s over it was totally worth it! (2) Leather everything. From boots to dresses and everything in-between 2013 brought leather back in a big way and there is nothing I love more than the edgy yet sexy look of leather… so rock and roll! And don’t tell me its too hot in Qatar because we all know you are always hopping from one hotel to another and haven’t stepped a foot in non-regulated temperature since you moved here. (3) Breaking Bad giving us the best show finale in history. So satisfying! (4) IOS7. Among other quirky details don’t you just love that they call your albums “collections” and your photos “moments”. So sweet.

But 2013 also had some cringe worthy moments as well, that I hope not to see in 2014. (1) Selfies: Not only was a name coined to describe our self-indulgence, the president of the free world takes them at funerals! I was home for Christmas and I kid you not my grandmother excitedly screamed, “Let’s take a selfieeee together”, within the first two minutes I arrived home. With more and more social media outlets coming out I fear that my dream of seeing less selfies may be unrealistic… but let a girl dream. (2) Ombre hair: There is only one reason why

the world could have embraced such a trend and its called laziness! No one loves to get their roots done every six weeks but it doesn’t mean we should stop doing them. Unless you are truly in the fashion world most people down the street or at work probably feel sorry for you because they think you can’t afford getting your roots done. (3) Hating on Miley Cyrus: Give the girl a break! She is not the first or last pop star to run around in their underwear. In the 80’s Madonna was just as shocking and look at her now so motherly and British not to mention one of the richest women in the world. (4) The BBM app. really how necessary was that? Just incase you couldn’t get through to me on sms, whatsapp, FaceTime, Facebook, Twitter, Skype or Viber please also add my pin. Oh please. (5) THAT horrible shapeless skirt that reaches a little over the ankles. The only benefit? You’re covered up enough to go to Villaggio on a whim.

I could go on and on but I am running out of time because I need to get ready for a date with this new hottie. I am ashamed to admit that I am already breaking my one New Year’s resolution: Stop dating men from Al Jazeera English (only correspondents I assure you). Maybe this one will be different? Okay I am lying but this one has the cutest smile I have ever seen. It’s only the first week of the year I have 11 more months to kick this habit. Ta ta, till next time. Miss Ohlala!
