conference and national favorite Brent Metcalf who has dominated wrestling at 149 pounds during the past four seasons. However, Palmer topped Metcalf, 9-3, in the 149-pound fi nal at the Big Ten Wrestling champion-ships in Ann Arbor, Mich., March 6. The fact the win granted the Buckeye from Columbia Station, Ohio, his fi rst and only Big Ten title, made it all the sweet-er and at the conclusion of the championships was named the event’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. And consider this, not only was Palmer’s vic-tory huge in boosting his confi dence heading to the NCAA championships in two weeks, but his win also served as Metcalf’s fi rst loss of the season as the Hawkeye entered the match 31-0. Also in four meetings, the six-point differential was the largest margin of victory for either wrestler. As a team, the Buckeyes fi nished fourth with 102.5 points, not the fi nish head coach Tom Ryan was hoping for heading to Crisler Arena. But at the conclusion of the championships, Ohio State locked up at least six wrestlers for nationals, including run-ners-up Reece Humphrey (141) and Colt Spon-seller (165). Nikko Triggas (125), Ian Paddock (133) and Mike Pucillo (184) were the remaining automatic qualifi ers.

After fi nishing second last season at 133 pounds, Humphrey was hoping to capture the title in his se-nior season at the weight class he defi nitely feels more comfortable with, but came up short, suffer-ing a 3-1 setback to No. 2 Michael Thorn of Min-nesota. Sponseller, the No. 3 seed, earned his way to the title bout against No. 1 seed Andrew Howe of Wis-consin, but also lost a close decision, 4-2. Pucillo fi nished third in the 184-pound bracket, opening the session with a 4:10 pin against Nick Palmieri of Michigan State. The senior from Strongsville, Ohio, then wrapped up his fi nal confer-ence championships with a 4-1 win over No. 2 and Penn State’s Dave Erwin. It is the second straight year Pucillo has fi nished third. He was the league champion in 2008. Top 5 fi nishes by Triggas and Paddock also helped the Buckeyes score team points. The sixth seed, Triggas began the day with a loss to fourth-seed Brad Pataky of Penn State, 11-2, but rebounded nicely with a 12-4 major decision against No. 5 Cashe Quiroga of Purdue. Paddock, the seventh seed, followed pretty much the same route as Triggas to his fi fth-place fi nish as he lost to No. 4 Tyler Graff (Wisconsin), 9-4, to open

In just his third match of the season, Rella secured a 3-1 sudden vic-tory win over Daniel Rinaldi of Rutgers at the Oklahoma Gold Classic Nov. 14. He then suffered a setback to Robert Hamlin of Lehigh that was based on riding time differential a week later. Rella won four straight sudden victory matches - 11-9 vs. Chance Litton of West Virginia Dec. 4, 3-1 vs. Bagna Tovuujav of George Mason Jan. 3, 6-4 vs. Jordan Blanton of Illinois Feb. 12, 3-1 vs. Ian Hinton of Michigan State Feb. 14 - before dropping back-to-back sudden victory bouts in the Big Ten championships.

DID YOU KNOW? Ohio State compiled a program-best 29 points against Michigan in its win Feb. 5 in St. John Arena. After drop-ping 14-straight matches to the Wolverines, the Buckeyes have now won three-consecutive. Also, the 37 points recorded in the win over Northwest-ern two days later served as the third most points the Buckeyes have scored against the Wildcats. In 2004, Ohio State put up 40 points and in 1991, scored 39.

BY THE WAY In the wins over Michigan and Northwestern, Ohio State outscored both teams, 66-15. The Buckeyes beat Michi-gan, 29-9, Feb. 5, before handing the Wildcats a 37-6 loss.

SPOTLESS Reece Humphrey (141) is the lone Buckeye who fi n-ished the Big Ten regular season undefeated with a 7-0 record.

IT WON’T BE EASY In the Buckeyes’ 2-0 weekend with wins over Purdue and No. 14 Indiana Jan. 29 and 31, respectively, senior tri-captains Lance Palmer and Mike Pucillo not only poured on the offense, but they presented a stifl ing de-fense as well. Palmer gave up only one point on the weekend and Pucillo relinquished just three points - all on escapes.

TEAM LEADERS Junior 125-pounder Nikko Triggas leads the team with 15 pins. Senior captains Mike Pucillo (184) and Lance

Palmer (149) are second and third, respectively, with eight and seven falls. Reece Humphrey, also a senior tri-captain, paces the squad with fi ve technical falls. Triggas and 165-pound junior Colt Sponseller are tied for second with two. Sponseller sits a top of the team standings with 10 major decisions. Palmer is second with nine and fresh-man Ian Paddock is third with eight.

IT’S A FIRST Senior tri-captain Lance Palmer was named Big Ten co-Wrestler of the Week the conference announced Jan. 26. It was Palmer’s fi rst-career conference weekly honor. Palmer, fi rst in the latest InterMat standings, defeated No. 5 Frank Molinaro of Penn State in the Buckeyes’ 21-14 win over the 13th-ranked Nittany Lions Jan. 24. The win was the 149-pounder’s third over a Top 10 opponent and fourth against a Top 20 wrestler.

The Buckeye from Columbia Station, Ohio, used a takedown and a reversal, as well as 1:28 riding time, to secure the 5-3 victory en route to handing Molinaro just his second loss of the season.

JUST SO YOU KNOWWith their 21-14 win over Penn State Jan. 24, the

Buckeyes won their fourth-straight Big Ten opener. In 2009, Ohio State beat Indiana, 18-16, to start Big Ten action. A 23-13 victory by the Scarlet and Gray began league play during the 2007-08 season and in 2007, the Buckeyes downed Purdue, 28-6.

MOMENTUM IS KEY With its 10-0 start following its win over then-No. 8 Cornell, 27-14, in the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Jan. 9-10, Ohio State recorded its second-best start in program history. The Buckeyes would go on to fi nish third at the event. Only Ohio State’s 15-match win streak to start the 2001-02 season bettered the 10-0 mark.

THE BEST OFFENSE IS DEFENSEIn Ohio State’s third-place matchup vs. No. 5 Min-

nesota in the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Jan. 9-10, the Buckeyes gave up only 12 points, six on a forfeit. Furthermore, the Buckeyes only relinquished seven points in their opening bout at National Duals vs. then-No. 15 Arizona State.

IT’S NOT HOW YOU START In each of their three wins at the NWCA/Cliff

Keen National Duals Jan. 9-10, the Buckeyes had to rally from early defi cits. Ohio State overcame a 7-3 defi cit against then-No. 15 Arizona State before rallying for the 32-7 win. Against then-No. 8 Cornell, the Scarlet and Gray were down 7-6, but won fi ve of its next seven matches for the 27-14 victory. In the third-place matchup vs. No. 5 Minnesota, Ohio State was down early, 3-0, but won fi ve con-secutive matches en route to a 26-12 win.

4 AND OH! Senior tri-captain Lance Palmer was a perfect 4-0 at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Jan. 9-10. Of his four wins, two were a pin and a major decision.

BONUSIn 20 dual matches, Ohio State amassed 154 bo-

nus points. On eight pins against Cleveland State Nov. 22 in the Buckeye Duals, the Buckeyes col-lected 24 bonus points.

DECISIVE WINSOhio State outscored its opponents, 610-185, in

dual matches this season. The Buckeyes’ largest margin of victory in 2009-10 was a 48-point win (51-3) over Cleveland State Nov. 22 in the Buckeye Duals at St. John Arena.

CLOSE CALL After falling short of the Oklahoma Gold Classic

team title by just .5 points in November, the Buck-eyes had a reversal of fortune when they won the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Wrestling Collegiate Invita-tional by one point over Cornell Dec. 4-5 in Primm, Nev. Ohio State won the tournament with 122.5 points courtesy of a championship run by Reece Hum-phrey (141) and runner-up fi nishes by Lance Palm-er (149) and Colt Sponseller (165). Humphrey, a senior tri-captain, scored six victories en route to the title. The native of Indianapolis, Ind., scored bonus points in three of his six wins, which included a pin, technical fall and major decision. His fi nal three bouts came against seeded wrestlers in No. 8 Kenny Hashimoto of Northern Colorado, No. 4 Kyle Dake of Cornell and No. 6 Fil Novachkov of Cal Poly. Despite the tough competition, Humphrey was able to outscore his fi nal three opponents, 24-11. Humphrey’s win over Dake proved pivotal in the team standings as well. The Big Red stood just 10 points behind the Buckeyes entering the second and fi nal day of competition. Palmer, another senior team captain, was second for the second consecutive year at 149 pounds, a weight class considered one of the toughest in the nation. The No. 2-seed from Columbia Station, Ohio, Palmer faced No. 1 Kyle Ruschell of Wisconsin in the fi nal and dropped a close 3-1 decision. Palmer had won nine-straight matches before his setback in the fi nal. Sponseller also was a runner-up for the second straight year at 165 pounds. Sponseller faced a Bad-ger in the fi nal in No. 1 seed Andrew Howe. The junior from Glenmont, Ohio, lost, 6-3, in the champi-onship bout. With Top 8 fi nishes, Nikko Triggas (125), Dave Rella (174) and Mike Pucillo (184) also were in-strumental in guiding Ohio State to the team title. Triggas was eighth, Rella was seventh and Pucillo earned a fourth-place fi nish.

MORE FOR THE MANTELSenior tri-captain Reece Humphrey was named

Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week Nov. 24. The native of Indianapolis, Ind., won his 100th career collegiate match Nov. 22 at the Buckeye Du-als in St. John Arena. He hit the century mark with

his 5-3 decision over Notre Dame College’s Adam Ko-balla in session two. Humphrey, the No. 4 ranked wrestler at 141 pounds, went 3-0 at the Buckeye Duals, winning his other two matches on pins. He opened the event with a 4:58 fall against Josh Falk of Findlay. Humphrey then closed the day by pinning Cleveland State’s Ron-ald Butler in 4:06. Humphrey began the weekend Nov. 20 with a 7-1 decision over No. 15 Seth Ciasulli of Lehigh in St. John Arena. Humphrey shared the honor with Brad Pataky of Penn State and it was his second-career Big Ten weekly award. He also won Nov. 4, 2008.

ALL-STAR CONTENDERSenior tri-captain Lance Palmer competed in the

44th NWCA All-Star Classic Nov. 22 in Titan Gym on the campus of California State Fullerton. Palmer, No. 1 at 149 pounds in the latest InterMat rankings, dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 5 Kyle Borshoff of American. The native of Columbia Station, Ohio, is in the running to become Ohio State’s second four-time All-American. He would join Tommy Rowlands (2001-04). So far, Palmer has garnered a pair of fourth-place fi nishes at the NCAA championships during his fresh-man and junior seasons. He fi nished eighth his soph-omore year. Palmer, the 2010 Big Ten Champion, also has two third-place Big Ten championships fi nishes to his credit (2007 and 2009).

INSIDER’S PERSPECTIVE Zach Stolarsky, a 197-pound junior, has been giving fans an inside perspective on the Buckeyes’ season with his blog, “Weighing In with Zach Stolar-sky.” With 12 entries, Stolarsky offers a unique and humorous side to the up-to-date news and notes that can be found on the offi cial website of Ohio State athletics, OhioStateBuckeyes.com.

IT’S PERMANENT J Jaggers, two-time NCAA champion and cur-rent volunteer assistant coach, was honored at the team’s second-annual The National Championships Wall Ceremony Sept. 26 at the Steelwood Athletic Training Facility, the Buckeyes’ practice facility.

“The wall ceremony is about imprinting the vision of greatness on the minds of our team early enough in the season so they can do something about it,” Tom Ryan, head coach, said. “J Jaggers set a high stan-dard on the mat and in the classroom for others in the program to follow. We appreciate all the alumni and friends who came out to honor J.” Arguably the most eye-catching feature of Ohio State’s training facility, the northeast portion of the room honors the 11 former and current Buckeye na-tional champions with life-size likenesses of each wrestler. The replicas stand approximately 6 feet in stature and display each wrestler in an action or stance shot during one of their championship sea-sons. The celebration came in recognition of Jaggers’ second-consecutive national title at 141 pounds. Former Ohio State coach Tommy Rowlands was the guest speaker. It was quite fi tting for Rowlands to serve as the presenter. Before Jaggers’ second NCAA title, Rowlands was the last Buckeye to win two NCAA crowns. In all, three Buckeyes have captured two national championships - Jaggers (2008, ‘09), Rowlands (2002, ‘04) and Kevin Randleman (1992, ‘93). Jaggers also concluded his collegiate career as a three-time All-American and three-time All-Academ-ic team member.

A PROMISING FUTURE Freshman Collin Palmer was named High School Athlete of the Year by the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission Feb. 3. It is the second-consecutive year a Buckeye has been honored by the sports commission as two-time

NCAA champion J Jaggers earned Collegiate Athlete of the Year in 2009. As a high school senior, Palmer won his fourth-consecutive Ohio High School State Tournament title in 2009 at 140 pounds en route to leading St. Edward High School to its 13th straight team title and 25th overall. In 2008, the Columbia Station, Ohio, native won the 135-pound division after being crowned champion at 125 pounds in 2007. During his freshman season in 2006, he won the state title on a 3:08 pin at 112 pounds and pinned three of his four opponents en route to his fi rst title. The announcement was made at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards in front of more than 1,000 guests at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. All athletes were nominated by local media out-lets in each of the sports awards categories, which then went through a ranking point system that se-lected the winners.

WHAT AN HONOR Head coach Tom Ryan and the Buckeyes were

recognized by Columbus City Council Sept. 21 with a Resolution of Expression. Council member A. Troy Miller introduced Ryan and the 33-member squad with the offi cial document in city council chambers. Also present were Buckeye assistant coach Joe Heskett, volunteer assistant coach J Jaggers and strength and conditioning coach Alex Picazo. The Resolution is in acknowledgement of Ryan, the 2009 National Coach of the Year, guiding the Scarlet and Gray to three Top 10 NCAA fi nishes, in-cluding consecutive runner-up fi nishes in 2008 and 2009, since his arrival to campus four seasons ago.

Under Ryan’s leadership, Ohio State has three indi-vidual national champions, 12 All-Americans, six na-tional fi nalists and 22 national qualifi ers. Academically, the Buckeyes have boasted seven National Wrestling Coaches’ Association (NWCA) All- Academic team members, 21 Academic All-Big Ten honorees and 26 Ohio State Scholar-Athletes. Ohio State also is active in the Columbus com-munity. The team routinely volunteers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, participates in the Second & Sev-en Foundation, which strives to eliminate illiteracy, and partners with the Mad River Wrestling Offi cials Association to help raise awareness and funds for autism.

WHAT A CLASSHead coach Tom Ryan’s current freshman class

was ranked the 10th-best recruiting class in the na-tion by internet publication InterMatwrestle.com. The 2009-10 freshman class is comprised of 11 Buckeyes, including early National Letter of Intent signees Nick Hefl in, Ian Paddock, Collin Palmer and Jacob Vaughan last November. Peter Capone signed an NLI in June. The class enters its fi rst season as Buckeyes hav-ing won nine individual high school state titles.
