VIOLENCE & RECOGNIZING THE DIFFERENCE

VIOLENCE DYNAMICS

Page 20: Ohio Concealed Carry Competency and Training NO LIVE AMMUNITION IN THE CLASSROOM! OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE

VIOLENCE DYNAMICS

• SOCIAL VIOLENCE = Posturing and threatening behavior not intended to kill or maim. Acts include ritualized jockeying for territory or status.

• ASOCIAL VIOLENCE = Actions that are intended to create serious bodily harm or death. Acts that do not target the victim as person but as a resource.

20

Page 21: Ohio Concealed Carry Competency and Training NO LIVE AMMUNITION IN THE CLASSROOM! OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE

VIOLENCE DYNAMICS ATTACKERS MINDSET

• • Predators are looking for easy targets. Not a fight!

21

• The attacker will see you as a victim and will show you no mercy.

• Predators often travel in groups.

• Predators seek the weak that are isolated from the herd.

• Often when attacked the herd will not help. They will flee.

• Predators choose situations that are advantageous to them not to you.

Behavior of Human Predators & Animal Predators Are very Similar!

• Appearances…Do you look weak? Are you a favorable/easy target?

• Most acts of violence are not random! Odds are that you know your attacker.

TYPES OF SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL ACTIONS

SINGLE-ACTION EACH PULL OF THE TRIGGER PERFORMS A SINGLE ACTION: RELEASING THE

HAMMER. THE HAMMER MUST BE MANUALLY COCKED FOR THE FIRST SHOT.

TRADITIONAL DOUBLE-ACTION THE INITIAL LONG, HEAVY TRIGGER PULL BOTH COCKS AND RELEASES THE

HAMMER. EACH SUBSEQUENT SHOT IS FIRED IN THE SINGLE-ACTION MODE.

DOUBLE-ACTION-ONLY EACH PULL OF THE TRIGGER BOTH COCKS AND RELEASES THE HAMMER, AS

WITH A DOUBLE-ACTION REVOLVER.

ERRORS IN SIGHT ALIGNMENT AND SIGHT PICTURE

SIGHT ALIGNMENT IS MORE CRITICAL THAN SIGHT PICTURE.

A B C

A SIGHT PICTURE ERROR (A) YIELDS A SLIGHTLY OFF-CENTER GROUP.

A SIGHT ALIGNMENT ERROR (C), PRODUCES A MUCH LARGER DEVIATION OF THE GROUP FROM THE TARGET. PROPER SIGHT ALIGNMENT AND SIGHT PICTURE IS PICTURED IN (B).

Page 91: Ohio Concealed Carry Competency and Training NO LIVE AMMUNITION IN THE CLASSROOM! OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE

FRONT SIGHT FOCUSWHEN SHOOTING A PISTOL WITH IRON SIGHTS, VISUAL FOCUS SHOULD BE ON THE FRONT SIGHT. THIS WILL LEAVE THE TARGET AND REAR SIGHT SLIGHTLY FUZZY, AS SHOWN AT LEFT, BUT CLEAR ENOUGH TO ESTABLISH PROPER SIGHT ALIGNMENT AND SIGHT PICTURE.

Page 92: Ohio Concealed Carry Competency and Training NO LIVE AMMUNITION IN THE CLASSROOM! OHIO SHOOTING SPORTS HANDGUN 1 COURSE

VISUALLY CHECK SIGHT ALIGNMENT

• Align sights – Instructor will verify sight alignment with a reverse cross check.

• VERIFY THAT ACTION IS OPEN & CHAMBER IS EMPTY!!!

• Drill also assists student to get over fear of pointing gun at another person.

BREATH CONTROL MINIMIZES THE BODY MOVEMENT PRODUCED BY BREATHING, WHICH CAN IMPAIR GOOD

SHOOTING.

• TAKE A BREATH BEFORE EACH SHOT, LET OUT ENOUGH AIR TO BE COMFORTABLE, AND THEN

SIMPLY STOP BREATHING WHILE FIRING THE SHOT

• AVOID HOLDING THE BREATH TOO LONG—THIS CAN CAUSE TREMORS

TRIGGER CONTROL IS THE PROPER METHOD OF ACTIVATING THE TRIGGER TO MINIMIZE MOVEMENT THAT CAN MISALIGN THE SIGHTS.

•TRIGGER IS BETWEEN FINGERTIP AND FIRST JOINT OF INDEX FINGER. SPACE BETWEEN FINGER AND FRAME OF GUN

•TRIGGER IS SQUEEZED STRAIGHT REARWARD IN A SMOOTH, CONTINUOUS MOVEMENT

•THE TRIGGER SQUEEZE SHOULD PRODUCE A “SURPRISE BREAK”

•TRIGGER SQUEEZE AND SIGHT ALIGNMENT ARE DONE WHILE MAINTAINING MINIMUM DEVIATION / ARC OF MOVEMENT

•360 DEGREE HOLD ON GUN AS HIGH AS POSSIBLE.

AT THE MOMENT THE SHOT BREAKS YOUR MIND WILL SEE A FREEZE FRAME OF WHERE THE SIGHTS WHERE AT ON THE TARGET. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO CALL YOUR SHOTS WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE TARGET.

FOLLOW-THROUGH IS THE CONTINUATION OF THE APPLICATION OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF SHOOTING THROUGH AND IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE FIRING OF THE SHOT.

FOLLOW-THROUGH ENABLES THE SHOOTER TO INTEGRATE, MAINTAIN AND CONTINUE THE SHOOTING FUNDAMENTALS BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER THE SHOT.

CALLING YOUR SHOT & FOLLOW-THROUGH

LEGAL IMPLICATIONS & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Quoted from Richard Cordray, Ohio Attorney General, publication

“Ohio’s Concealed Carry Law” “Self Defense: Depending on the specific fact of the situation, an accused person may claim that the use of deadly force was justified to excuse his or her action, which would otherwise be a crime. Self defense or the defense of another is an affirmative defense that an accused may assert against a criminal charge for an assault or homicide offense.”

“The term “affirmative defense” means the accused, not the prosecutor must prove by preponderance of the evidence that he acted in self defense or in the defense of another. In other words, the defendant must proved that it is more probably than not that his use of deadly force was necessary due to the circumstances.”

“Whether this affirmative defense applies to the situation or whether it will likely succeed against criminal charges depends heavily on the specific facts and circumstances of each situation. The Ohio Supreme Count has explained that a defendant must prove three conditions to establish that he acted in defense of himself or another.”

OHIO REQUIREMENTS FOR SELF DEFENSE AND USE OF FORCE

USE OF DEADLY FORCE CAN BE APPLIED IF 3 CONDITIONS ARE PRESENT

1. Defendant is not at fault. Engaged in lawful activity.

2. Reasonable and honest belief of serious bodily danger.

3. Duty to retreat. Must show that they did not have a duty to retreat or avoid the danger.

• Castle Doctrine

• Enacted in 2008

• A person does not have the duty to retreat from a residence or vehicle that they lawfully occupy or a residence or vehicle owned by an immediate family member before using force in self-defense or defense of another.

• Presumption of self-defense is a rebuttable presumption. Prosecutor not the defendant carries the burden of producing evidence contrary to the fact that the law presumes.

• A person is barred from recovering money (suing) if their injury arises from their criminal behavior, including injuries sustained by acts of the intended victim. If you injure an innocent bystander (hit by a stray bullet) you may be ordered to pay damages to that person.

Safeguard for Minors• Children under the age of 18 have a much higher risk of identity

theft than is commonly realized. Thieves target them because the child’s information may be used for years without discovery … until the minor is old enough to establish credit.

• Education, early detection, and expert consultation make for a powerful package of tools to minimize this risk.

• Up to four minor children can be enrolled for monitoring to detect existing credit files and it will cost the member only $1 more per month per family.

• All dependent children up to 18 are covered for consultation and restoration.
