OKANOGAN – Health officialsencourage parents to vaccinatetheir children to prevent thespread of diseases and to ensure ahealthy life.

According the websitevaccines.gov, immunizations cansave a child’s life.

“Because of advances inmedical science, your child can beprotected against more diseasesthan ever before,” the site said.“Some diseases that once injuredor killed thousands of childrenhave been eliminated completelyand others are close to extinction, primarily due to safe and effectivevaccines.”

Polio is an example of a diseasethat has been virtually eliminatedthanks to vaccines.

“Polio was once America’smost-feared disease, causing deathand paralysis across the country, but today, thanks to vaccination, there are no reports of polio in theUnited States,” vaccines.gov said.

Officials said temporary pain ofthe injection spot, along withminimal, temporary side effectsfar out weigh a life-threateningdisease.

Playtime! That meanshomemade play dough

OMAK — Homemade play dough is easyto make, cleans up easily and is non-toxic.

1 cup white flour1/4 cup salt2 tablespoons cream of tartarCombine and add:1 cup cold waterFood coloring (optional)1 tablespoon cooking oilIn a medium saucepan, mix together

flour, salt and cream of tartar. A non-stickpot works best.

Combine water, a few drops of foodcoloring (if desired) and oil.

Add to dry ingredients and cook overmedium heat, stirring constantly, for threeto five minutes. It will look globby.

When it forms a ball in the center of thepot, remove from the heat and turn it out ona slightly floured surface. Knead briefly untilsmooth.

Cool and store in an airtight container (aone-pint cottage cheese or margarine tubwill hold it) or a zippered plastic bag.

This dough is edible, but not tasty. Itkeeps, unrefrigerated, for several weeks.

Be sure to provide plenty of cookiecutters, a rolling pin, dull plastic knives, bottle caps and other items for cutting andshaping.

This dough cleans up well. If a bit of itdoes dry on a surface, pick or chip off asmuch as possible, then remove the rest witha damp rag or non-abrasive scrubber.

If it’s left uncolored, it won’t stain.

Reading helps childdevelop and learn

OLYMPIA — Reading with your childcan help the child develop in many differentways.

Parents are the child’s first teacher andtime spent with baby is important, the stateDepartment of Health said.

Some tips:• A child learns best in a loving,

encouraging and helping environment, sohold the child in your lap while reading.

• Let the child choose the book anddecide when to turn the pages.

• Choose books that help the childexplore the world around him or her.

• Keep the child’s body active by letting

baby turn the pages. An older child can actout stories as they are read.

• Play, talk, read and write with the child. That will help baby understand that thewords on the page mean something.

Oral germs can bespread around

OLYMPIA — Germs cause cavities andcan be spread from parents to infants andtoddlers.

Foods and drinks fee germs, which makeacids and cause cavities, the WashingtonDental Service Foundation said.

Tooth decay can be stopped if it is caughtearly. To prevent tooth decay:

• Set a good example. Brush, floss andhave regular checkups.

• Use fluoride to prevent and heal earlytooth decay.

• Consult with your doctor or dentistabout fluoride drops or tablets if your watersystem doesn’t contain fluoride. Fluoridevarnish and sealants also are available.

• Choose tooth-healthy snacks such ascheese, fruits and vegetables. Avoidsnacking or sipping on sweet liquidsthroughout the day.

• Drink lots of water after meals andsnacks to help clean teeth.

State offers collegesavings program

OLYMPIA – The state’s GuaranteedEducation Tuition program – known asGET – allows parents, grandparents andothers to set aside money for college tuitiona little at a time.

GET is guaranteed to keep pace withtuition costs, no matter how much theyincrease, and is not subject to the ups anddowns of the stock market, the state said.

Parents and others can save on thefuture cost of college tuition by starting tosave when the child is young, and byreducing student loans as much as possible.

GET tuition credits can be used atcolleges, universities and technical schoolsnationwide, and can be used for anyqualified higher education expenses.

Under the program, people can purchaseGET units, where 100 units represent thecost of one year of resident, undergraduatetuition and state-mandated fees at the

highest priced public universities in thestate – University of Washington andWashington State University. Units can bepurchased in whole or partial amounts, from one to 500 units per student.

Buckle up: State lawrequires child restraints

OLYMPIA – When riding in vehicles, children in Washington must be restrainedin infant or booster seats until they are 8years old or 4 feet 9 inches tall.

Under state law, infants must ride inrear-facing infant seats until they are a yearold or weigh 20 pounds.

Children 1-4 years old or weighing 40pounds are to ride in forward-facing child

car seats.Children who are less than 8 years old or

4 feet 9 inches tall, whichever comes first, must be restrained in a child booster seatwhen both lap and shoulder belts areavailable.

Free child car seat checks are offered inmost areas. Information is available fromthe Washington Safety Restraint Coalition.

The fine for improper use or failure towear a seat belt or child safety restraintdevice is $124.

Children under the age of 13 are requiredto ride in the back seat when it is practical, the Washington State Patrol said.

The patrol said a child’s car seat shouldbe replaced if it has been involved in acollision.
