Well. . . . . Last month I thought Spring had sprung. Boy was I wrong. Now
I’m wondering if summer will ever get here. One thing I do know for sure is
that when it does, I will be complaining loudly about how hot it is!
May 6th saw the North Country Tours bus leave for Soaring Eagle in Mt. Pleas-
ant and the Frankie Avalon Concert. Our own Jackie Tidball escorted that trip
and all attending report that it was a most awesome concert and day.
On May 22nd the Spring party, themed “Enchanted Garden” took place. Nearly
100 people attended with the staff adding to the décor by dressing up for the
theme also. Let me tell you, some of my co-workers did an awesome job of
putting their costumes together. You should have seen our cooks, especially
Mary, who dressed as a woodland bride, she looked so beautiful. (Too beauti-
ful to be serving food!)
Also during the party our Board of Directors honored our Director, Carol Gill-
man for her 40 years of service to senior services in Ogemaw County by nam-
ing our building “The Carol A. Gillman Building”. It was an emotional proud
moment for all of us who have the pleasure of working with her. Her dedica-
tion to Ogemaw Commission on Aging and senior services is unsurpassed and
without her this building would truly not exist!
The Ogemaw County Herald and the Ogemaw Voice both did nice stories

Seniors gathered for a celebration to honor Carol Gillman for 40 years of service to the Commission on Aging. The enchanted forest themed
party at the Commission of Aging Building in Ogemaw County was held Wednesday, May 22. During the party, Gillman was surprised when
the Board of Directors held an immediate meeting to rename the building in her honor. The building is now the Ogemaw Commission on Ag-
ing’s Carol A. Gillman building. Posted 5/22/13

SODIUM IN YOUR DIET In most Americans’ diets, sodium primarily comes from salt
(sodium chloride), though it is naturally found in some foods. So-
dium is also added to others during processing, often in the form
of salt. We all need some sodium, but too much over time can
contribute to raising your blood pressure or put you at risk for
heart disease, stroke, or kidney disease.
How much sodium is okay? People over 50 should get less than 1,500 mg of sodium
each day—that includes sodium added during manufacturing or cooking as well as
at the table when eating. That is about 2/3 teaspoon of salt. Preparing your own
meals at home without using a lot of processed foods or adding salt will allow you
to control how much sodium you get. Look for grocery products marked “low so-
dium,” “unsalted,” “no salt added,” “sodium free,” or “salt free.” To limit sodium to
1,500 mg daily, try using less salt when cooking, and don’t add salt before you take
the first bite. If you make this change slowly, you will get used to the difference in
taste. Eating more vegetables and fruit also helps—they are naturally low in sodium
and provide sodium to 1,500 mg daily, try using less salt when cooking, and don’t
add salt before you take the first bite. If you make this change slowly, you will get
used to the difference in taste. Eating more vegetables and fruit also helps—they are
naturally low in sodium and provide more potassium.
Here’s a tip
In the case of sodium, don’t be confused by the Nutrition Facts label. It uses the
recommended level for people 50 and younger, 2,400 mg. Just check the actual
milligrams of sodium on the label and keep to the amount recommended for peo-
ple 51 and older—1,500 mg.

Have a good laugh!
The Bathtub Test: During a visit to the mental asylum, I asked the director, “How do you determine whether or not
a patient should be institutionalized?” “Well,” said the director, “we fill up the bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a
teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask them to empty the tub.” “Oh, I understand,” I said. “A normal person
would use the bucket because it’s bigger than the spoon or the teacup?” “No,” said the director. “A normal person
would pull the plug. Do you want a bed by the window?”

FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR:
DEAR SENIORS:
Words cannot express the absolutely awesome, and totally unexpected event that took place May
22, 2013, to be honored in such a manner by having a beautiful building named after you is hard to
believe. For those who do not know I will describe the events: We were holding a spring party for
our seniors at “My Place” with the theme of the “Enchanted Forest”. I had been told that The
Ogemaw Commission on Aging governing Board, consisting of Pete Hennard, John West, Ron
Quackenbush, Eileen Howell, and Fred Hinkley were going to commend me for the “40” years of
service.
Unbeknownst to me they had decided by DECREE to name the building the Carol A. Gillman
Building, no one but Jennifer Raymond was aware of this, and SHE was sworn to secrecy. She
was also in charge of contacting people, making arrangements, all the things necessary to make
this happen without giving anything away. Believe me she would make an excellent CIA Agent!
Our COA Staff consisting of Sharon Burdine, Jan Mayhew, April Zettel, Mary Jones, Mary Cole,
Tamra Edgerton, Phil Matthews, Mike Boyd, Bob Brown, RN. Trish McLaren, Deanna Nichols,
Sally Reid, Debbie White, Jane Sundberg, Peggy Ostrander, Sharon Spitsen, Jackie Tidball, John
Marsiglia, Albert Lee, Bob Jones, Salena Debuschere, the handiest person around David Burdine.
All went together and purchased a special parking space for me! My daughter Bobbie, son Ric.
friend Bonnie, Diana hardest working person I know, John Briggs Chief Operating Officer from
NEMCSA The Voice, The Ogemaw Herald, were all there to witness the event! The COA staff had
worked for weeks to prepare the decorations in keeping with the “Enchanted Forest Theme” they
outdid themselves! The Party was fantastic! Great music by Pete Jackson!, A luscious meal
“Pasties made by the Masonic Lodge”. All of our seniors had a wonderful time, I know because
they told me so! But for me alone it was truly a day to remember!
SO, I SAY TO EVERYONE “THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY
HEART”!
Notice: We shall soon have a new sign, it is almost complete, and for this great piece of work we
must thank profusely the following people:
BURT NICHOLS
JOHN BOLES THEY ARE THE BEST!
LIN KASPRZYK
THANK YOU TO GLEN’S MARKET Glen’s Market of West Branch has donated baked goods to us for several years. This makes it possible for us to put out the treats that you folks so enjoy in the morning with your coffee. Thank you Glen’s, we appreciate you and we know the Seniors of Ogemaw County do too!
