The Year of Mercy

Pope Francis declared the Year of Mercy, an Extraordinary Jubilee, which will begin on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on Decem-ber 8, 2015 and conclude on the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe on November 20, 2016. The last time the church celebrated a Jubilee Year was in 2000.

Since the fifteenth century, a holy door has been viewed as a ritual expression of conversion. The believer associates the door with Christ. In the words of Pope Francis, “There is only one way that opens wide the en-trance into the life of communion with God: this is Jesus, the one and abso-lute way to salvation. To him alone can the words of the Psalmist be ap-plied in full truth: ‘This is the door of the Lord where the just may enter’ (Ps

118:20).”

When Pope Francis opens the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basil-ica on December 8, the “Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope” (Misericordiae Vultus 3). Fifty years earlier, December 8, 1965, the Second Vatican Ecu-menical Council concluded. That council strove to bring the church into the modern world by bringing a breath of fresh air into the church, to become a “living of the Father’s love in the world” (MV 4).

“In this Jubilee Year, let us allow God to surprise us. He never tires of casting open the doors of his heart and of repeating that he loves us and wants to share his love with us. The Church feels the urgent need to proclaim God’s mercy. Her life is authen-tic and credible only when she becomes a convincing herald of mercy” (MV 25).

Here in our archdiocese, the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and St. Mary’s Basilica in Galveston will designate a door as a Holy Door which will be opened on December 13, 2015 and will close on November 13, 2016. For more information, watch for the Year of Mercy links at www.archgh.org.

Mercy is the very foundation of the Church’s life. All of her pastoral ac-tivity should be caught up in the tenderness she makes present to believers; nothing in her preaching and in her witness to the world can be lacking in mercy. The Church’s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and com-passionate love.

PILGIRMAGE OF MERCY - RELICS OF ST. MARIA GORETTI

While St. Maria is universally known as the Patroness of Purity, her greatest virtue was her unyielding forgiveness of her attacker even in the midst of horrendous physical suffering, a for-giveness that would completely convert him and set him on a path to personal holiness. In March His Holiness, Pope Francis, announced an Extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy beginning December 8th. This visit of the major relics of St. Maria Goretti is an effort on the part of her Basilica Shrine, the Congregation of the Causes of Saints, and Treasures of the Church, to prepare and catechize the United States for this great celebration in the life of the Church.
