Or Rio, Cairo, Manila, Chicago? There's a plane and a ship leaving

today and you're not on it ; again!

Even if you buy an AMP insur-

ance policy today you probably

won't be going next month either;or even next year .

But at least you'll have your planstarted.

AMP insurance has paid for tensof thousands of overseas trips . Thepeople who enjoy their travel haveplanned ahead .

Little by little they have built a

fat nest egg; and suddenly, they fly .

Even if you don't want to goanywhere, AMP insurance can builda beach home, pay for a son's edu-cation or the time to read all thosegood books you've had to skip .

AMP pays out 2 million dollars aweek to people just like you .

Sometime they spoke to an AM Pman. He built a plan for them andthey stuck to it .

That's all it takes : a quiet chat toan AMP man. Talk to one soon.

BALL BRIEFSOrmond Reserves still unbeaten and

doing it nicely. Kennie Rowse reallyhas his boys firing at this stage andlook odds-on for a flag . Perhaps someof these boys may even get to Seniorselection after the weak effort bysome of the "Senior" players ?

Congratulations to Ivanhoe Juniorsrover Bill Earl on another courageousgame, backed up by four goals in thematch against St . Kilda CBCOC . Bill'seffort in the third quarter to soccerone through led the 'Hoes' recoveryand eventually to their comfortablewin.

De La Salle's David Broman playedan excellent game on the half-backflank and -never gave up trying untilthe final bell . Others to show outwere Paul Mitchell who kicked 3 finegoals and David Whitelaw.

Collegians' best in the game againstMonash was hard to pick as the winwas a team effort, but here goes fora try at it anyway. Our No. 1 wouldbe Chris Roach for an extra good dis-play all day and for his five very valu-able goals, Peter Lucas, and PhilHughes who celebrated his electionto the Seniors with a sound display.Peter Hammett, Phil Pryor and his 3goals, and Skipper Edwards for asound display and his leadership wasvery good, also he kicked 3 goals . Wemissed the services of David Vivianwho was taken ill during the week, best of luck David for a speedy re-covery from all your teammates.

Monash highlights . Great fightbackby the Reserves to take out the points ;Phil Knights' rugged game; JohnNorth's good game on the back-line; Jeff Peeris fine game at fullforward, notching six ; John Kelly'sstubborn game at full back ; Tim Col-lie's good first-up for the Reserves ;Peter Bunn's good ruck work.

With a strong win over Old Scotchlast week, North Old Boys continueto press for a place in the B Section

four. Withstanding tremendous pres-sure from Old Scotch in the lastquarter, players like Bob Spurling,Noel Robertson, Lex ArGhurson andMaurie Drew kept North two goalsin front and provided us with one ofour best wins in recent years .

Pat Hilbert, just back from hishoneymoon, plays his 50th game withSt. Bernard's today . Over the yearsPat has been a very consistent playerfor the club, and we all hope he con-tinues his good form now that he isa married man .

Ian Murley, Footscray Tech's roverplayed his 50th senior game againstSt . Bernards . "Murls" turned in a greatgame in the mud and capped it offwith a magnificent snap goal from theboundary in the last term .

"Dame" Cartwright is persistent, tosay the least . He played on Saturdaywith the Reserves and was presentedwith a tankard after the game, so hefronted again on Sunday morning inthe hope of finding something to putin it . Alphin;gton will miss him .

T-Ms returned to the winning listat Power House last week, and one ofthe reasons behind the win was Gor-don Jones' dominance of the centre, and Peter Hoey's brilliance on thewing. Noel Graham and Mick Parkerlead the goal kicking department, andAlan Cockerell beat everything but thegoal post .

"Jimmy" Bonwick, Old Haileybur-ians' utility player reaches his 50thgame today. Jimmy who is vice-cap-tain of our Reserves finds himself inmost positions on the field fromback pocket to roving, you name itand Jimmy will always give his best .

Old Carey had many good playersagainst UHS but special mention isdue to Geoff Freeman who roved ten-aciously, Euan Keddie for clever for-ward play and Pete Dambrosio whoshowed glimpses of his old form .

chinson and his wife Gwen - a son .Both well . Hutchy, one of the bestrucks to play amateur football hasplayed for Power House since 1956 .We trust young Peter will in a fewyears time also ruck for Power Housewith his mother's consent - we standcorrected, young Peter's name is JohnRonald .

Congratulations to U .H.S . Old Boysnew reserves captain coach Billy Tay-lor. The committee have shown theirconfidence in Billy to do the job andhe has not let them down - since hisappointment the side has shown verygood form winning their last twogames; last week over top side OldCarey Gramm. Well done Bill . Goodto see Bob Reid return to the sideafter a few weeks out due to a seriouseye injury .

Old Trinity Reserves should havetaken a leaf out the book of vicecaptain Barry "Doe" Lansdeil againstOld Brighton. Barry tu rned in an in -spiring game, and it certainly wasn'this fault that his team-mates weredisinclined to follow his example .Without Barry and his five goals theloss would have been much worse.

St. Kilda CBOCis Peter Cookeplays his 50th game for the fi rstsagainst Old Carey . Peter started withthe Juniors, with whom he was aleading goalkicker, and his skill haswon him a place in the senior side, where he is currently playing in fi neform. Fifty more of the same type, please Cookie .

Bryan Harding, Assumption's coachhad the misery of defeat on top ofhis recent cartilege trouble. Afterseemingly taking the lead and readyto go on to a good win, the Bluesfaltered and allowed the oppositionto come back and snatch a late win .The present lean patch is most dis-concerting to supporters . Past cap-tain coach in Bernie Curtain must I hard earned win .THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-June 11, 1970

get the impression that he's a Jonahas every time he makes the long tripdown from Berrigan he invariablywatches a defeat . Perhaps the week'srest and the festivities at Porepun-kah may revive the will to win . Let'shope so.

National Bank's sound win overHampton Rovers was a good warmup for their interstate clash againstSouth Australian counterparts inAdelaide on "Independence" weekend ."Pressure Pack" Morley roved wellagain but should have doubled hisnumber of "sausages" . Young RodWatts playing on the wing contestedeverything that came his way in avery solid performance .

For the second time this year OldBrighton's Rick "Tiny" Trewavasplays his 50th game this week. Thisdoes not mean he has played 100games but that in the first instanceRick could not count. Par for thecourse .

David Tidd was at his brilliant bestwith a great game for Glenhuntly -made even more memorable by thestrength of the opposition. "Sexy"Peterson played his usual sterlinggame as did "Butch" Nathan.

Down Fairfield territory you don'tneed a deed poll to change yourname only a change of clothing willsuffice, take Colin Richardson for in-stance, when he wears his long whitecoat, and waves his flags, he isknown as "Eagle Eye" then, when hedons the runner's armband be becomes"Fleetfoot"; in both jobs he givesgood service .

Old Haileybury were lucky to wintheir last game against Assumption .Kicking into a strong wind in the lastquarter they were down by 7 pointshalf way through, however two greatgoals to Andy Home and Andy Lang-ford-Jones turned the tide and withgood defence the Bloods recorded a

II Briefs - continuedHearty hearsays, Bleeder old boy .

Your contribution was short andsweet last week, and as the Chinesesay Sweet and Sour especially whenyou mention our efforts at thosememorable games' nights from yourpoint of view. Well old Poison gotaround last Saturday to see bothjunior and senior games . He wascrying tears of blood when he wit-nessed the display put on by Park-side juniors and could not stayaround to the bitter end . Howeverseveral players took my eye, I won'tmention names, as they could beplaying senior football in the nearfuture . At Pitcher Park the story was'an entirely different one, and somesay St . Kevin's were talked out of thegame in both the reserves, and seniormatches . Ray "Tiny" Ford will haveto do some smart talking if he hopesto strip for Parkside for the rest ofthe year. It was pleasing to see DougRobertson with half a smile on hisface, and he was happy that Parksidehad at last begun to grind othersides into the ground and he hopesthis becomes a regular occurrence .Hope Fairfield have a regular grind .

POISON PENMick and Haans Lewin decided to

have a quiet night in front of the TVafter St. Kevin's defeat last week .They invited old friends Smithy andwife over for a bite to eat . Then LenJohnson arrived with `Max' who'dbeen away just a little too long . Thencame Maurie Molan with $10 . Alittle later "Goofy" Hoare turned up .Ecka Johnson and "Lungs" Fernonlobbed straight from an `annualmeeting' . "Bomma" O'Malley and"Flea" Foley were next . And just toround it off Maurie Sheehan and KeithHoare arrived just as people wereabout to leave. Just a nice quiet night .

The best way to a man's heart isthrough his stomach so they say .Well St . Pat's newly formed Ladies

Group is really getting to me . Lastweek's barbeque and those sand-wiches were great. The secondsplayers and officials were overjoyed .Our very special thanks to Mrs .Hynes, Colleen, Lyn, Carmel, Jan, Sad-ie and others for the efforts . P.S. Ijust happen to love barbeque chops .

Playing in shocking conditionsBrunswick gained a great percentagebuilder at the expense of Old Essen-don Grammarians . Another good dis-play of football by Keith (Stretch)Weybury who gave many opportuni-ties to his team-mates .

Miracles never cease to happen -Elsternwick junior Gary "Wacker"Rosewarne was kept quiet for fiveminutes last Saturday ; would theParkside player who was responsibleplease advise the Elsternwick clubhow he was able to do it .

La Trobe Uni coach Kevin Eastonwas back in harness after an argu-ment with a lawn mower. Great tohave you back Kevin! La Trobe hittheir straps for the first time thisyear to annihilate Ajax . Best in abrilliant side were: "Old Man" Sceney,"Big" Al Monohan, "Shag" Anyon,"Leon Keward", "The Patch" and"Moses" Sheehan.

The Old Camberwell back lineplayed a major part in the firsts' winlast week . With Dave Tucker and DickHewitt again in great form little wasleft for other backmen to do . On theforward line Darrell Gretgrix madethe most of his opportunities and waswell backed up by Mark Tipping andGlen Foster . Butch MacCallum ruckedwell all day and Peter Waterworthwas very busy in the centre .

Melbourne High had a convincingwin over St . Bernard's Juniors. Itwould have been a runaway win butfor St . Bernard's defenders KevinMahoney, Damien Santamaria, andNoel Gulliver. Congratulations chapson a really fine game .

Ball Briefs - continuedUniversity Juniors just scraped

home from Monash in a tremendousgame last week . Barry Johnston dis-played his coaching genius by theinterchange of full forward "Fatty"Lowe and centre half forward IanVoigt at three quarter time. Ian tur-ned in a great last quarter, kickingthree magnificent goals. "Lowy"playing his first game for 10 weeksshowed good form, kicking threegoals, although starved for opportuni-ties. The whole defence led by thesuperb combination of John Clarkeand Ru ssell Tucker showed why theyare on top in the Section .

We hear that National Bank JuniorGarry Skelton has been eating hismeals standing up after collecting astop when his back was turned . Alsoit is good to see the unlucky playersnot selected help Des Stayches to getthe side on the field .

Old Brighton's Sunday morningtraining is becoming a popular feat-ure at the club. Last week's handballcompetition was keenly fought outeven though a certain coach cheated .The only problem is the lack of re-freshments but this should come afterwe win the final .

Skipper Rob Cowen played a grandgame for Tooronga-Malvern Juniorsin a valiant effort to bring victory tohis side, finishing with 4 goals him-self and assisting in others . New-comer John Tink made a brilliantdebut, whilst Paul Mitchell, WayneStokes, John Black and Graham Wattsall gave of their very best .

M.H .S . star half-back flanker Nick"Shoulders" Solatgis, for the fourthsuccessive week was named best manafield last Saturday . With tirelessmonotony "shoulders" is seen eachweek playing the ball, baulking, bumping his way through a dozenplayers and still come up on top .Coupled with him was Frank "thelip" Perry, who, playing his first

senior game for the season dominatedon the other flank to make this linethe best for the day .A dismal effort by Assumption Re-

serves. Playing the wrong style offootball for the conditions they werenever in the hunt . Of the Blues onlySimon "Slamming Sammy" Stuartgave four quarters of opposition .Other players including "Big Pete"Hanvin and Peter Paterson gavetoken resistance for part of the gamebut 100% effort was lacking frommost players . Some of the playerson the sidelines must have felt frus-trated at the easy way the oppositionwas handed the game. Late in thegame Adrian Munari, moved from fullforward, gave a little bite to the sidebut too late to make any difference.

Another poor performance by St.Kilda CBOC's Reserves saw us gounder to a far more determined op-position and only Blackie, Spence andSelkrig were consistent kickwinners. If a few had followed Paul's fine ex-ample we would have been muchcloser all day. Perhaps we shouldchange the name of the team to"Social" instead of Reserves .

Great news for Old Trinity sup-porters and players is that Phil Cohenhas had his call up deferred. Thisnews was greeted rather loudly atthe Trumble home and also muchlater at Cohens the celebrations werestill going on . Coach Terry was nearlyas pleased as Phil himself.

Dick Mullett turned in his bestgame two weeks ago for Old Camber-well Reserves so far this season. Hemarked well, used handball intelli-gently and kicked to position all day .Keep it up Dick. It was also good tosee Ian Edgar slip into his stride inthe same game. Ian, who was strug-gling to find form, pushed himselfinto the game with sheer determina-tion and thus played one of his bestgames for the club .

u-11 Briefs continuedOld Brighton are always glad to

welcome cricketers to the club butthis year we find three of the mostavid "backyard" cricketers playingfor us. Andrew "Fish" Mullet,"Mighty" Mike Rossiter and Rod"Colonel" Sanders are all playing wellthis year, maybe they learnt some-thing in the backyard .

Ray Barton and Keith Hodgins look-ed more like refugees from last Mon-day's T.V. Ringside than Glenhuntlyfootballers . Both played well and it isregrettable that such fair ball playersshould "cop it" . Better sharpen upthose reflexes chaps !

A .M.P. Reserves celebrated "FatLover's" return with a solid win overFairfield . Teamwork is the successfulrecipe and with a couple of "recruits"due shortly this team could take abig hand in August proceedings . ColLittlejohn was a great success up for-ward and Ron Bloss was uncanny infront of the sticks . "Johnno" did theheavy work well and "Snow" put inhis best for the club .

It has always been said at Parksidethat you can always back on a"Winna" receiving a mention at leastonce every week for their effortsaround the club . Well the youngestmember of the family has finallycracked it both for a mention in theRecord, and in general conversationaround the club for his battling effortsin the Junior match against Elstern-wick. If you can continue on fromhere Glen "Jew" Winnacott you willcertainly be a winner of a trophy foryour efforts in the very near future .All Parksiders hope so, especially"Silva" and Joe .

Good to see the return to form ofBrunswick's Robert (Stalky) Dean andLee (Elvis) Gordon . Both playedstrongly all day.

At the Glen Iris Ocean last Satur-day M.H.S. players surprised the DeLa Salle home team by taking to thePage 22

Spied the captain's mother doingan efficient job of bandaging last Sat-urday. Could it be St. Bernard'sJuniors have a new first aid member?water attired in togs together withflippers, goggles and snorkels . Thiswas said to be the reason for thesurprise underwater attack launchedby Melbourne High. Coach Keith Mar-shall told the visiting side to attackfrom between the pool and sand dunethen sneak it along the channel forthe goals, but defend into the surfnear the palm trees . The plan waswell thought out and great drivingkicks by M.H .S . saw them drive theopposition up for air meanwhile scor-ing unusually accurate goals . Greatwork by High under the adverse con-ditions .

Ivanhoe Juniors' latest win com-pleted the first stage of coach DonBlackwood's secret campaign.. Donreckons that if the boys show simi-lar determination today, stage twowill present no problems.

Ormond disappointed last week allthose who expected a big showing .Looks like some just haven't got itfor the big occasion. "Mel" Bournewas a grand trier all day. Peter Laveryalso safe and dashing in the backpocket, while Peter Sierakowski',sgame as usual full of guts and deter-mination. What a huge heart thisbloke must have! Jeff Russ, "Stubby"Blight and "Long" Wood were otherswho never gave up trying .

Collegians' David Crow who hasnot played in recent weeks due to anagging back complaint was a spec-tator at the game against Monash, and is progressing slowly . HarleyHarber, who was injured in a recentReserves game, was also a spectatorand is progressing satisfactorily .Shane Ryan, who showed such goodform and promise in the early games,is another player who has been onthe casualty list for some time now .

Ball Briefs - continuedJohn Rathjens played his first game

with De La Salle Reserves and per-formed well . On the form he showedfirst up De La have a real find .

Against traditional rivals FootscrayTech Old Boys, St. Bernard's last weekfinally started to look a team again, after being in the doldrums for a fewweeks . The better performance bythe team was due largely to the greatform of Mick Mahoney at centre half-back, and all connected with the clubhope Mick can continue his greatform until the grand final . Anotherplayer whose form over the last fewweeks has been an inspiration to allplayers is Colin Reidy. Keep up thegood work Col .

Footscray Tech's Ellis Patersonplayed his last game with us lastweek before working for 2 years withthe Army . "Patto" received a going-away gift from his mates late lastweek, a mud pack. We'll keep Helenhappy, mate. Best of luck from allplayers and members of the club,Ellis.

We were beginning to wonder aboutJohn Williams and how he got on atwork wearing the Alphington tracksuit . We had almost given up hopeof getting it back as he wore it toand from training for a fortnight, toand from Geelong including havingtea in a cafe . One can only assumethat it needs washing .

Tooronga-Malvern Reserves, al-though down, were certainly not out .Alan Crouch played well all day, andtwo heavy knocks did not deter himat all . Graeme Dent marked every-thing and is certainly "burning" in hiscomeback. A special mention forDenty's wife who actually wants himto play football .

The marking of Russell McPhee ofOld Carey was a big factor in theirgreat win against U.H .S . Old Boys .With good judgement he positionedhimself in the front of the packs and

grabbed some beautiful marks . He fol-lowed up with some strong tellingkicks to send Old Carey into attack .

U.H.S. Old Boys ruckman Max John-ston was by far the side's best playerlast Saturday, repeating his perform-ance of the previous week. Max hasreally been playing well since his re-turn from his honeymoon a few weeksago - maybe there is some connec-tion .

For the first three quarters A .M .P.basked in the previous week's gloryand only in the final term did theybelatedly produce the good stuff ."Machine" Munro and captain BarryThompson fortunately produced it allday. They received support fromBrian Ahern (again) and "Longie".Glenhuntly today A .M.P.s, how's thememory?

Even without his villainous-lookingmoustache, Graeme Linley inspiredIvanhoe Reserves with his strengthand determination in the mud againstUni . Blues, not forgetting either theefforts of Ran Brentnall or GeoffDowley who defended stoutly all day .

In a game in which all players de-serve a mention Chris Lofts was ingreat touch for De La Salle Reserves .Chris is improving every week and isa definite prospect for the future . Hewas also well supported by Kevinand Graham Perkins, Mick Burke andPeter Sherman .

Parkside's Bob and Glen Winnacottmay sneak into a mention this week .Bob "Paunchy" Winnacott was men-tioning something about sneaking intoa back pocket in the Senior side acouple of weeks ago, and it appearsthe selectors took some notice byplacing him on a half-back flank forthe Reserves last week . It would behard to imagine a corpulent fellowlike Robert fitting into anybody's backpocket, let alone the one so capablybeing held down by Colin Thomas atthe present time .

Ball Briefs - continuedCollegians Reserves, who for three

quarters looked like beating MonashReserves, failed to last the full dis-tance and finally went down in thelast quarter . The best on the day wereJohn Varigos for an extra good effortall day, John Munn, Mark James,Bruce Ferguson, D . Maddocks (a fi rstyear player who continues to improvewith each game) and last but not leastthe gentle giant, gentleman GeoffreyNash.

It was a great tonic to see IanJohnston of Old Carey hit his strapsagainst U.H .S . Old Boys . Playing ona half-back flank he marked well, showed plenty of dash and was averitable brick wall to U.H .S . attacks .

Revenge, particularly 47 pointsworth, is sweet and St. Kilda CBOC'sdrubbing of Old Melburnians repaysthe sound defeat they handed out tous earlier this season. Good playerswere many, with "Bones" D rinan,"Goose" Quirk and "Hairs" Careyplaying top football all day in defence .Goals to the Skipper and the deputy-deputy Vice prove just how easythey were to come by .

Old Camberwell Reserves captain-coach Peter Sugden, who is fast ap-proaching his two-hundredth game, isonce again having a great season.Winner of the best and fairest trophyfor the Reserves in 1968 and 1969,Suggo is playing as well as ever. Heis a great inspiration to the youngerplayers in his side, and is leadingthem to one of the most successfulseasons ever for the Old CamberwellReserves' side.

After half-time last Saturday Mel-bourne High Reserves saw a new facetake the field in Peter Rees and playa terrific half, as well as kick his firstgoal . A tall young player, Peter willbe a great acquisition to the side."Dicky Knee" Harley also figured pro-

minently after having a broken fingerseveral weeks ago to go on and havethree stitches in his leg for this week'seffort . What will be in store for Rickthis week? Watch forthcoming edi-tions .

Return to form by Ed Schwarzman, fine forward play by rovers "Tessa"and "Long Hair" Salter (he must bejoining the army), and Phil Howewere features of St . Kilda CBOC'sfine performance for the second con-secutive week . Having finally hit ourstraps we will make the going verytough for the sides that will have tomeet us in September .

Old Carey's convincing win againstpreviously unbeaten U.H .S . Old Boyswas due to a great team effort . Everymember of the side contributed some-thing. The only blemish was theirfailure to keep the forward line openresulting in 16 behinds from 28 scor-ing shots.

Although defeated last week theperformance of St. Kevin's was muchbetter than that of the previous week .Our way to the final four is nowmuch more difficult but by no meansimpossible . It requires a continuationof the spirit shown in last week'sgame .

St. Pat's (Ballarat) rattled on goalsgalore last week to win over WestBrunswick in a real grand final typelast quarter. Attacking football undersuch gusty conditions really showsthe old St. Pat's spirit is still verystrong. Keep it up fellas and we'll stayin "D" Grade next year .

In a game fought out right fromthe first bounce, Tooronga-MalvernJuniors went down fighting by thenarrow margin of 2 points to top sidePower House, thus showing that theirrecent run of successes have been nofluke. A very creditable performancewhich augurs well for the future.

150 TO TOORONGA-MALVERNPLAYER

John Evans played his 150th gamefor Tooronga-Malvern last week, andturned in his usual good game. Johnhas been a very consistent performerover the years, and it is difficult torecall when he last played in the Re-serves. Pace and ball-handling are hisgreatest acquisitions, and John shouldprove a headache to the oppositionfor many years to come.

100 UP TO CAULFIELD PLAYERCongratulations to Graham Craven

of Caulfield Grammarians who playshis one-hundredth game with the clubtoday. Graham is a real clubman, al-ways willing to lend a hand withthose jobs nobody likes doing. Welldone Graham, and good luck for Nyouicentury .

TWO OLD HAILEYBURYCENTURIES

Two Old Haileyburians reach 10 0games this week, "Dicky" Wetheralland John "Rigs" Rigby play their100th games for the Bloods . Both havegiven great service over this periodand are to be congratulated on reach-ing this goal .

100 GAMES TO O.G.G.'s STARLast Saturday Terry Brown played

his 100th game for Old Geel, angg . Inhis career with the club Terry haswon the club's best and fairest trophyon a couple of occasions as well asmost of the other club trophies . Ap-parently the umpires agreed with theclub last year as they voted Terrybest and fairest for "C" Grade . Wewish him luck in the State selectiontrials as State representation wouldbe fully deserved.

FAIRFIELD CENTURYAll Fairfield players and supporters

would like to congratulate Bruce"Yack-Yack" Young on his centuryof games for the Bloods . Bruce hasbeen the backbone of our Reserves'

defence for a long while now, andnow we wait for his second ton !

A.M.P. tall timber "Stretch" lYdc-Lennen finally cracked number 50 andLaurie Taylor and Barry Long will alsoreach that milestone this week. Con-gratulations to all three players, eachof whom has given great service tothe club .

Over to the "B's" in Pussy Cat andGympie . I believe your match lastweek was quite a torrid affair . I betyaplayers like Leake and Flucker forGeelong receive a ribbing every week.but still manage to turn in some gooddisplays for the club . Parkside s fullforward, Maurice "Jacko" Jackson hasnot fired around the goals since re-turning from his honeymoon . LikeSouth Melb. the young players inBobby Fletcher, Brian Harvey, andDennis Thomas, with their keenness, are keeping Parkside in business, andthe older players with their guile andexperience are steadying the teamdown when necessary . Len Stenlake,Bill Rodda and Daniel "Boone" Glee-son are three such teammen . Park-side will continue to win, and wehope your clubs will do the same in"B". Poison Pen .

Melbourne High celebrated theirgreat win last Saturday by holding a"Chicken and Champers" night atJohnny Cooper's. A terrific menu, to-gether with plenty to drink, put thosewho attended in a great mood. "WildTiger" Lily writhed her way throughmany dances with Rolf "ban thebomb" Proft, and Ian Wilson wasseen in a clinch in the corner and atone stage even came up for air."Whiskers" Waodley was voted"roughest chin present" with JohnnyBainbridge sneaking in to take thechampers prize of the evening . Thanksfrom the Old Boys are extended toall the Coopers for a really wonderfulparty .

From re and There - continuedNORTH OLD BOYS 150th

Today North Old Boys plays its150th game in Amateur football andthe club recalls proudly that duringits 8 seasons in the V .A.F.A. it hasplayed in all Sections, moving fromE-Section to A-Section in successiveyears, 1964-1968. "North" capturedthe E-Section flag in 1964, the D-Sec-tion flag in 1965, was runner-up toGeelong for the C-Section premier-ship in 1966 and was again runner-upin B-Section in 1967. The Club's Re-serve XVIII won premierships in 1964(Reserve Section 4), 1965 (D-Section)and 1966 (C-Section) . Under the lead-ership of fine captains, John Adams,Ray Kelsey, Robert Spurling (Cap-tain and Coach 1967-8) and Les Mur-ray, North Old Boys has enjoyedmuch success but in its entire historyperhaps "North's" most memorableperformances were witnessed, againstGlenhuntly (E-Section), againstO.G.G.'s in the D-Section second semi-final (1965), against Old BrightonGrammarians, in C-Section, at theBeach Oval when after trailing by50 points at three-quarter-time, wewon by two points, and in three epicclashes with Ormond in 1967 in B-Section. Of the 149 games played todate the club has won 98, lost 48 anddrawn 3 . Of these games Les Murray, present captain has played 142 .

Greetings fellow members of thecorrespondence clan - 'tis TheBleeder calling you once more . Fair-field v, ere successful again - not asconvincing as we would have liked, but winners nonetheless . Terry "Un-passable" Richardson turned on hisusual reliable game and Johnny "YouTake The" Hyland nonplussed the op-position with a fine display of accur-ate (?) kicking. To my pal PoisonPen I see a working club final comingup which could be a beauty and to

my other colleagues Pussy Cat andGympie, I suppose you are still' de-bating that close finish . -The Bleeder .

Hello Poison Pen, Bleeder, PussyCat. - I am one out again, as allyou fellas had good wins . (Any winis good, Pussy Cat!) even if you don'treally deserve it . Still, it was notan entirely black day for Common-wealth Bank as my summary shouldprove. We were only one point notgood enough .

Bank, keeping the ball low non-plussed the Geelong high fliers earlyand with fierce tackling raced to anearly lead. The Country Kids lookedlike taking control in the early partof the 2nd term, but Bank lifted theirgame to be 9 points up. Geelong threwthe kitchen sink at Bank in the 3rdbut only managed 1-7. When Bankgoaled early in the last the Baby Catswere in desperate straits, then playinglike a top side, Geelong snatched thelead only to see a spirited Bank sidecome back with a rattling run andmiss the uprights three times in arow, in the time-on period . Neitherside played great football, but spec-tatorwise the thrills were many . Ithought Les Radford was good enoughfor my nod and Richard Harhen prov-ed himself in big time . Carl Ventura,Bernie Shacklock and Neil Torrensalso wore the stamp of courage .

Our Reserves came from behind toscore a morale-boosting win over theBaby Cats . I saw some worthy Blueand Golds in "Stinky" White, "Gin-ger" Thynne and "Frosty" Linehan.

McGeachy and Gympie renewedacquaintance - Bernie Brady lost awindow of his car when George Say-nor kicked out on the full, PhillipMarshall said hello, and nothing elsehappened at the football . -Signingoff, Gympie .

BALL BRIEF SJohn Rojo turned in another

screamer for Ivanhoe last week tomake a major contribution to the'Hoes great win . Others to catch theeye were Fenton Old Meadow andDennis Hartney, while Phil Riley and"Quincy" did some heavy work inthe packs .

A few weeks ago a sight like theGlen Iris Swamp would have reallyupset University Blues. But with aplace in A section at stake they justgritted their teeth even harder lastweek against De La Salle. BarryChurch grabbed his flippers at three-quarter time and kicked 5 goals in agreat last quarter. Ross "LookoutMate" Macaw was as brilliant as us-usal, "Dino" Martini roved well allover the ground and Jim Fox playeda good game on the half-forward line.John "Speed" Renowden also playeda strong game in the nick without get-ting in the best six .

De La's Reserves rover Gerard Halehas certainly been playing great foot-ball this season . Last Saturdayagainst Uni Blues was no exception .He roved magnificently all day andfinished up with three great goals .Gerard must certainly be close tofirst selection .

Sammy Grace, that star reserve forOrmond's reserves, please don't gettoo carried away . It's a long way un-til the end of the season so how couldyou possibly hold your form untilthen?

Collegians went down to Ormondby the simple fact of bad kicking andfailing to use the wind to their ad-vantage, both teams did not kick ac-curately by any means. Collegiansbest for the day came from Bob Zent,Peter Hammett, Rob Webster (in de-fence) Bruce Ferguson, Phil Pryor, and of course skipper Rick Edwards .Collegians wish the Carnival side thehest of luck and may they come

back victorious. We still have a :'cwplayers off the track through injuriesand the Wog, former player/bound-ary umpire, delegate, selector and vicepresident Brian Powell, missed seeinghis first game for a long time. Firstyear player Phil Hughes was outthrough sickness, John Shinkfield whomissed training through the virusquickly shook off the effects andplayed .

Congratulations to MelbourneHigh's interstate representativescaptain John Cooper, Ian Turnbulland Alan Wilson. The club and sup-porters wish these players the bestof luck on their two week venture .Hurry back soon fellas with the ban-ners still flying the victory sign .

Jeff Thomas blames the concus-sion he sustained a fortnight ago,Warren McKeown claims it was thebye last week. All at Monash reckonthat it was great news! What? Theirengagements - Jeff to Pauline andWarren to Marilyn. Congratulationsand best wishes from the MonashUni . Football Club !

It's about this time of the year thatwe have a look at two first year play-ers who have fitted into the club andAmateur Football generally . I thinkthe pick of the recruits for Common-wealth Bank would be Tony D'Orsa .This lad has blended into the seniorside like a natural, and has gainedseveral mentions amongst the bestplayers. Steve Medcraft, Paul Ander-son, Dave McKinney, Kevin McNally,Ian McCrimmon, Richard Horban andRay Petryniuk have all turned inserviceable games and speak well forthe future . As none have incurredthe umpire's displeasure, they haveall adjusted to Amateur football, soit is reasonable to expect many years'service and many mentions in storefor these players .

H Briefs ~continuedIt's hard to know where a club

,vould be without its great clubmen .Uni . Blacks Reserves is full of them- undefeated this year and helpingthe seniors on to a flag. Congrats . tocoach Neil Watson and captain Brian"Tex" Costello for having the teamright behind them. By the way it'sgood to see Ron Carnie and NoelSharpe cracking the Firsts .

Congratulations to Bill Schwarzen-berg and Brian O'Loughlin on play-ing their first game in the "B" Gradeside for St . Bernard's last Saturday .Resting on the backline both play-ers had more to do than they should, but the team's play in the Iasiquarter improved and all at theClub hope that backline playershave less work in the future.

Footscray Tech's Secretary DuncMcDonald made his presence feltwhen he came on to the ground lastweek. An opposition player was sand-wiched between Dunc and "Hoppy"Turner . Only thing wrong was thatMacca bit the bloke so hard that theshock waves went straight thru theopponent and cleaned Hoppy right up .

"Fuzz" FennelIy, Noel Robertsonand Paul Peasnell proved the value, oftaking advantage of opportunitieswhen they each kicked four goalslast week in North Old Boys' winover Alphington . After giving the op-position a considerable start, a, de-termined effort by eighteen playersturned the 150th game of North OldBoys in the Amateur Competition in-to a memorable occasion .

OM's First's showed much betterteamwork and form to win well lastSaturday. Geoff Cloke played bril-liantly on the half-back flank andDave King rucked tirelessly for al-most four quarters . Bruce "Coolcat"Niemann gave the team a focal pointin attack with a polished display atfull-forward while Pete Collins andDave Russell provided the spring-THE AM ATEUR FOOTBALLER - JULY 18, 1970

board for many thrusts from the half-me. line. I must mention Pete

Robertson and Dave Wilson who play-ed so well two weeks ago and due tomy negligence missed out on a write-up; I'd be murdered if I didn't.

Alphington Reserves played lastweek as though they were a team ofcomplete strangers, no voice, no back-up. r a but as someonesaid a ofter the game they all lookednice with their ties and coats .

Fresh from a six goal victory overtheir Adelaide counterparts NationalBank's disposal of Power House hadtheir vocal department Kev, Noel andBob almost hoarse. But with a betterquality "lubricant" the boys managedto survive . Bankers missed the drivefrom the pivot of Brian Sheehan. lastSaturday, Brian fell victim to theHK," flu .U .H.S . Old Boys were pleased to

see the return of Peter Smith to thefield after a serious arm i^njury. Peterplaying his first game for the seasonwith the reserves, quickly showed hewas not far from his top form .

Atisumption's star full forwardBarry Dyer was his usual embarrassedself after being told that he was thefirst player for the club to pass 50goals in a season. With a little moreaccuracy last week he could alsohave beaten the match record of 12set by Eddy O'Halloran last year.Eddy was seen at Matty's last Satur-day night and confessed to havingitchy feet . Club supporters are hop-ing that it's not just tinea . Withboth these in the attack as well asDes Tuck, a more formidable attackwould be hard to find .

Thanks to Glenhuntly's sterlingPresident and wife, All and Val Gani-mon for after the game festivities .Kerry Nolan played one of his bestgames and Barry Turner carried therucks with a great display .

Ball Briefs continuedOld Carey are developing into a

strong team in the heavy conditionsnow prevailing at most grounds .Their big win against St. Kilda CBCwas a team effort, but special creditmust be given to the rucks led byPete D'Ambrosio and our two inde-fatigable rovers John Goode (5 goals)and Geoff Freeman (3 goals) . Theyhandled the ball as if it were dry andcalled the tune all day.

A heavy ground, inaccurate kick-ing in the second quarter when wehad the wind and the rain in the sec-ond half saw St. Kilda CBOC fail bad-ly last Saturday . Our display how-ever was generally dispirited andinterstate jaunts may not have help-ed some of our top players maintaintheir good form. Good players werefew, but Bilston, Drew and Kev White, battled hard all day.

A .M.P. recorded a pleasing win bydemolishing Glenhuntly and keepingits final hopes alive . Jerry McHughturned in a tremendous effort in de-fence by blanketing a class playerin Warner. Thommo was alwayscreative, "Longie" and Max Formbydominated up forward and "Ferret"did some useful things as did "Kimbo"Perrin.

Old Trinity were very lucky thatParkside forwards could only manageto kick points in the final stages ofthe match last week . Dale Emmersonand Neil Hudson did very well andfrustrated many Parkside attacks .

One of the up and coming juniors atParkside would eat a football if he wasgiven the opportunity, but unfortunate-ly his mates let him down last weekwhen they did not front for a game .David Kildea who played, and wasnamed best a fi eld for the reserves wasready, willing and able to saddle upfor the junior game .

All Fairfield supporters were rapt inthe way last Saturday's reserve gamewas called . Peter Collier gave a dis-

play that Bert Bryant would have beenproud of . He didn't miss a kick allday, and his umpiring could not befaulted, especially his goal decisionsand he even had time to play a goodgame too! And speaking of talking -Merv Day is coming back .

Old Brighton are gradually smuggl-ing more juniors into the senior side .Geoff Finkemeyer, Peter Wagner and"Maxie" Powell are all proving theirworth, a good sign for years to comewe hope..

"Ecka" Johnson's turn fulfilled itsearly promise last week even thoughthe act promised by Ecka did not infact occur - at least up until the timeyour correspondent left . Don Martin,St . Kevin's President was there ofcontinued to celebrate the arrival ofson Scott . And with Max entertain-ing, even the arrival of quick quip-ping Bomma O'Malley could notthrow a wet blanket on the turn .

St . Pat's (Ballarat) are most appre-ciative of the generosity by minehosts Beryl and Bill Bell in providingafter game snacks at our adoptedclub rooms - Bell's Freer's Hotel .Club stewa:ds, Jumbo. Zorba, andTaxi with their speedie service andwitty back chat ensure an enjoyableevening .

Peter (Tommy) Hanlon gave Bruns-wick selectors a reason to smile withhis five goals, so all looks good forthe finals .

Handling the blustery conditions het-ter St . Bernard's Juniors built up awinning lead by half time against StKilda . A sound display of attackingdefence by quiet spoken Damien Sap-tamaria, and solid ruck work byLen Madin played a big part . GerrardMahoney gave a heady display on aforward flank and big brother Kevinturned in his usual solid game at cen-tre half back .

Sall Briefs continue dHighlights of Elsternwick's game

last Saturday included Jeff Hohmuthshand passing (not once but severaltimes), John McIntosh's fine markingand unselfish play, Ray Street's, IanSekac's and Paul Shecvan's strong andconsistent play for four quarters, notto forget Bobby "P.C." Garbutt's twosneaky goals .

In a good second half La TrobeUni . annihilated their opposite num-bers, Instrumental in this great winwere "Old Man" Sceney, "Bus Shelter"Condon who did it again, "Froggy"Sgro, also "Hooks" Gee also misseda "sitter". Special mention to"Squizzy" Carr making a return afteran enforced absence.

Congratulations to Fred Tuiningaand Wayne Farrer of R.O.B.'s on play-ing their 50th game recently, Alsobest wishes to Kevin (Red) Joiner andMike Bates on reaching their matur-ity of 21 . Another red skin has bitthe dust, Peter (Barny) O'Brien andSue have become engaged, best wish-es to you both from all at ROB's .

Jose Vincent who arrived at theground last Saturday with his whisk-ers trimmed, turned in a great gamein the back pocket for Old Camber-well . One comment on Jose's gamewas that perhaps he could see un-hindered for a change. Others todo well were "Butch" MacCallum whorucked and handballed intelligentlyall day, Dick'Hewitt who once againplayed very well at centre half back. And Max Redman who never stoppedtrying .

Old Brighton Juniors seem to havefound two fine rovers this year. PeterWatkins and Peter "Sierra" Leoneare improving every week, so much sothat Ian Paroissien has been movedfrom the roving b.erth.

In a very even Tooronga-MalvernJuniors side, Robert Perkins gave anoutstanding display in his first game

at full back, he was well supported byfellow defenders Wayne Stokes, JohnHendry and John Black, whilst DavidBraun, Liev Zobie and Ray Martinwere always busy around the packsand up forward .

Uni Blacks, particularly the "all-stars", will sadly miss "Cliff.o", both onthe field and off . A great clubmanover the five years, the club wisheshim every success in his new positionin Broken Hill . About the only thingCliffo didn't master at the club was"Organ" Morgan's "Triple Blair" .

Congratulations to Diane and RonFaul on the arrival of their new babygirl . De La will have to start bas-ketball team to cater for the femalearrivals .

We understand "Logic" was evenprepared to forgo the "dogs" to takehis place at the Ivanhoe selectiontable this week. Evan also claims heis a "special" to make the end ofseason trip this year . The boys be-lieve it when they see it .

A great fighting effort by M .H .S .reserves last Saturday saw them playa tremendous game despite the lossof over half the side. Rapid replace-ments, Geoff Walker and Steve Healyare to be thanked for their part inthe match . Let's hope this surge inspirit can win some more games forthe team. Congratulations to captainAdrian Taylor for a great "best onthe ground" effort and for his firstoverhead mark.

After a very disappointing firsthalf, North Old Boys produced a su-perior brand of football in the thirdand fourth quarters to run out win-ners against Alphington at the NorthMelbourne Football Ground last week .With Mick O'Neill marking everythingup forward and Kerry Hughes lettingnothing past at full back, North even-tually came out winners by a fourgoal margin .

Ball Briefs continue dCongratulations to U.H.S. Old Boys

full forward Geoff Davis who lastSaturday broke the club's goal kick-ing record, with 11 goals, to take histotal to 63 for the season which brokethe existing record of 57 goals .

In a game which never lacked inter-est, Tooronga-Malvern Juniors keptalive their final four chances with anoutstanding display against WestBrunswick . All players did their partin contributing to this win, whichshows the value of dedicatioan, teamwork and discipline .

Bad kicking and a number of op-portunities wasted cost Old Camber-well's Reserves a chance to get inthe game against Reservoir Old Boyslast week. The back line led by"Stuie" Cripps was well on top all daybut was badly let down by the for-ward line. Other players to showout were Peter Molloy, John Murphyand John Mehan .

A great game was played forR .O .B.'s reserves by Laurie Scott lastweek, his great hall handling abilityenabled him to kick 4 goals, even onealong the ground I believe. Keep upthe good work Loza .

Elsternwick's John McIntosh, PaulShewan and Brian Molyneaux kickedtwenty-eight goals between them lastSaturday and that doesn't count theothers which they gave away to otherplayers . While talking about goalkickers we shouldn't overlook Bob"Cocky Raiders" Cochrane's three finegoals, not a bad effort after allthe years of trying, Graeme Shawnearly got one too, oh boy, what adouble that would have been .

Brunswick's chairman of selectorsKevin Ellison is off to the Gold Coastwith his bikini for a few weeks . Hisfellow selectors will miss him aroundthe table on Thursday nights . Happyholiday Kev! !

St. Kevin's had a great win overSt. Pat's last week . Things startedbadly with a heavy clash between twoSt . Kevin's players putting "Stinkin"Jack O'Connell on the sidelines in thefirst ten minutes . From then on theteam played well only in patches andit was well into the last quarter be-fore we hit the front. However, wewon - maybe we've turned the cor-ner .

Old Brighton welcomes back Lawrie"Jezza" Weir. "Flash" seems to havelost a few old skills, emphasising hislack of training . Perhaps he couldbe talked into playing, the onlytrouble is no-one wants to do it .

I would like to congratulate RossGreer and his wife on the arrival oftheir son last week, Ross is new toFairfield but in the short time hehas been here he has shown a ton ofpromise.

Good wines improve with age, butdo footballers? Bill McGrory playedwell in his 400th game at Glen-huntly and proved he has lost noneof it! Stephen Greening battled val-iantly. Robert Brown and David Leewere unbeaten but outnumbered .

In a one sided display, AMP Reser-ves crushed Glenhuntly with RonBloss dominating the game in thesquare to the tune of twelve goals,a magnificent performance . Ian Gra-ham and "Granite" Grant were againon top and others who contributed aa bit extra included Collery, Sirianni,Henderson and Littlejohn .

Keith (Which-Way) Weybery heldcommand in the ruck and around theground all day for Brunswick, he real-ly inspires his team-mates to greaterthings .

There is no truth in the rumorthat Ormond full back "Lumpy"Moran will be a full-forward just be-cause he kicked two goals neither dotwo swallows make a summer .

Cam McMillan plays his 200th gamefor the O.G .G.'s today, nick named"super" Cam following his wife's re-marks, comments about his perfor-mance off the field. Cam has estab-lished many records with the O.G.G.'s .Besides being the first player to reachthis mark he also topped the goalkick-ing in his grade for several years . Hewas also the first O.G.G. to be re-ported (and suspended) . We still be-lieve he is one of our best and fairestever! Good on yer Cossa !

Old Haileyburians captain AndyHowe played his 175th game last Sat-urday. Good luck for your next 25to reach that great 200 mark .

HELLO POISON PEN ANDBLEEDER

The drought has b.roken for us ailast which keeps CommonwealtlBank's hopes of avoiding relegatiorstill alive.

Footscray Tech jumped us earl}and it took us some time to weaithem down. It was a pretty evegame, and if a few breaks had go

n their way, the result could have beerdifferent. On general play, BAN E,were superior but our kicking for goawas very lax .

Carl Ventura was our sportsman olthe week, and he received good sup-port from George Saynor, JohnnyO'Shea back from a "holiday" TonyD'Orsa, Neil Torrens and Keith lm.bery.

The reserves were crushed in -a rE-sult which ended their meagre hopesof playing in the finals . Sam Athans,Jeff Langsworth and Kevin McNallystood out in a side which was nevergoing like a winner.

A difficult one today as we mustkeep winning to stay up whilst outopponents North are poised to moveinto the four. Although low on theladder, Bank's club spirit is runningvery high and this may give us thepoints .

See Parkside struck a snag, butdon't know how Bleeder's mob went .The Baby Cats are still winning soour form can't be too bad. Signingoff - Gympie .

CENTURY TO HAILEYBURYRUCKIYit-1N

"Gil" Urquhart, Old Haileyburiansruckman plays his 100th game today .Gil should have reached this earlierin the year . However, a knee injuryhas kept him out of 11 games thisvear. -Congratulations "Gil" and goodluck for your next 100.

High and low to you Gympie andPuss Puss . Parkside had a lowlightlast week when Maurie Jackson wasoff the target along with Billy "Sure-Foot" Rodda who coach, Doug Robert-son was thinking of banishing backto his backpocket. Parkside playedwell everywhere else except the score-board in both senior and reserve mat-ches . The willow of the wisp thatwill never how to defeat bye and byeput in a good solid game at half back, and rovers, Gragme Dryden, DennisThomas and Peter Byrne collectedmany kicks around the packs . "BakerBoy" Welsh made a welcome returnto the reserves side to be namedamongst the best, but Bernie Groomand Kevin "Bond" Ward did a littlebetter, "B" with you soon fella's,Poison Pen .

All at Brunswick wish John Dwy-ers father a speedy recovery from his

illness and hope he will be back atthe club very soon.

Many thanks go to Mr. Laird ofR .O .B.'s for his great work in theclub, the way he collects the money .so prompty, each week you wouldthink it was for himself .

A sincere thank you to the solidSt . Bernard's Junior supporters whorally round each week and do the oddchores necessary to field a team andnot a rabble. Your scrib.e thanksalso the good ladies who provide thehot coffee - it was really apprecia-ted in last Saturday's cold wins .

i: -v uJ6 6,LraGREETINGS GYMPIE, THEBLEEDER AND POISON PEN

It was a great win by our boysover Scotch. We, like them, neededthe win and we came back to top formand got the points . We had manygood players . To name a few --Alan Fluker, Ray Woakey, Eric Smith .Mickey Allden, Ken Andrews "Perdi"Jones and Phil Marshall all turned ingreat games in a very even side . Goodto see Lionel Smith coming back totop form and Alan Foster turned in anexcellent second half.

The "haunted House" party was agreat success the old Scotch boysstayed to well into the night . No re-ports on their bus trip at this stage .For the winners it was a great nightand we hope that, allowing for thecircumstances, our guests managed towash away their worries! We knowhow it feels up at Yarra Park !

Good luck all . Till next week. -Pussy Cat .

Thanks for the hospitality my bleed-ing buddy and the younger corpulantred blood. I am well aware thatFairfield were happy with the 14-goal win, and reckon they will des-patch Old Trinity and Parkside withease before the end of the home andaway games . Your cockroach wasvery jubilant when "yappy" tennentdelivered the sad news of Parkside'sdefeat by a goal at the hands of OldTrinity . Let's face it chaps, bad kick-ing indicates poor football, and 2goals 8 behinds in the final term isdisgusting and means some players de-serve their tails kicked. Kevin "Lov-er Boy" Clarke continued his consis-tent form for the season, and indeedappears set for the club's most impro-ved award. Top of the ladder to you,and I may tell you another bleedingstory next week, pen that's poiseddown Parkside way .
