He ran a successful graphic design business for five years before selling up and starting to write and illustrate books in 1975. He set out in the 1980s to depict as many words as possible in twenty-six images corresponding to the alphabet. His four-year painting odyssey resulted in a suite of magnificent compilations, all minutely detailed, masterfully rendered, and slightly surreal. Each image contains dozens, if not hundreds, of items all starting with the same letter. It is a mind-blowing and enjoyably engaging task to attempt to identify all the objects. The images in this puzzle were first published in 1986 in the best-selling The Ultimate Alphabet, and now as fantastic Jigsaw puzzles. Surely you can see the saluki, but can you spot the shuttlecock, the stein, or the sifaka? Mike Wilks writes, “There is a sketch of a squinch, a selection of shells (not all from the sea), a siamang settled on a seat, a sponge to be studied, and sundry stuff suspended from strings. In all, I included 1,234 S’s for you to see.” We have included the Letter ‘S’ as a starter, and if you enjoy it we can get more of the collection. Please let us know your thoughts. AA924 Geometric Herb Garden 1000pc £13 Rosalind Wise takes inspiration from nature, painting scenes of flower gardens, ponds, and meadows. A native of South Wales, Rosalind studied at Reading University and Goldsmiths College. During the 1970s she taught secondary education in Bristol and London. Then, in 1980 she moved to Gloucestershire and turned more of her time to painting. Her early work focused on small, singular bits of the natural world. Taking what she had learned from these early works, Rosalind painted The Flower Cycle but was always digging for new subjects and experiences. She began painting fields and gardens in their natural, untouched state, so that, in her words, “they have a chance to display their own character and energy. Painting releases and enhances the experience of looking and actually being there in the moment.” Geometric Herb Garden was inspired by the knot garden at the Garden Museum, in London. The knot is a seventeenth-century-style garden designed by the Dowager Marchioness of Salisbury and planted in honour of John Tradescant the Elder and the Younger, gardeners to King Charles I. The garden is bursting with herbs, creating a tapestry of colour, texture, and pattern that highlights the geometry of the knot. AA931 Sri Yantra Intimacy 1000pc £13 A fourth-generation artist, Paul Heussenstamm (American, b. 1949) creates sacred art and is a practitioner of the Eastern tradition of transmission, in which a painting travels through the artist. He believes that soul patterns are manifested in mandalas, which have played a role in Eastern spiritual development for centuries. A Sri Yantra is a type of mandala with geometric patterns that form a symbolic representation of the creative forces of the universe. Through meditation, these shapes are believed to have a balancing and calming effect on a restless mind. Paul leads mandala- painting workshops so that others may discover their spiritual path through art. AA936 Where Time Beckons the Wicked 1000pc £13 Dan May’s surreal paintings are filled with mystery and emotion, inviting viewers to create their own narratives. The dreamlike quality of his artwork brings a child’s imagination, and hope, into play in an exploration of the relationship between humans and nature. AA879 Francesca da Rimini 500pc £9 As Francesca reads to her young lover, Paolo, there is a hint of tragedy: the hand of her husband, the elderly and deformed Gianciotto of Rimini, creeps into the left of the frame. Aficionados of Dante’s Inferno will know that Gianciotto, Paolo’s brother, assassinated the lovers in such a scene. Painted in 1837 by artist William Dyce (Scottish, 1806–1864), the image originally included Gianciotto in full, but when the canvas was trimmed in 1882 to remove damage, only his disembodied hand remained. Some of our members struggle with the small standard pieces of most puzzles and are often asking for a greater selection of larger piece puzzles. We are pleased that the Pomegranate range includes a range of different size puzzles and pieces. Please check the sizes shown alongside the images below to find ones that suit you.

Janelle Dimmett takes a fresh look at a familiar character from The Wizard of Oz in this charming rural scene. And what’s a farm without a kitty cat?

Through the eyes of a curious little boy, artist Mike Wilks invites the viewer into Granny’s Garden, an enchanting haven of spider webs and squirrels, lizards and lilies, dragonflies and… dinosaurs? Expect the unexpected, for this is no ordinary backyard. A beautifully, richly coloured and detailed illustration of flora and fauna.

Thank you to everyone who got in touch to let us know that we had the wrong date on the competition entry. Of course we knew that there were only 30 days in November…..Whoops!

I’m off to write my Christmas list now and I know Pomegranate’s New Alphabet Puzzle by Mike Wilks will be top of my list – I love nothing more than a good challenging puzzle on these cold winter nights, especially when I can then spend more time after completing the puzzle trying to find all the special items.

Happy Christmas puzzling!
