“Meet Me At The Beach 2015” … (March 11—15) The 14th Anniversary of “Meet Me At The Beach” (MMATB) was a great event again this year in Ocean City, MD. Lots of dancing and
spending time with friends old and new. Again this year we had a “Steppin’ Out” Dance Party for Early arrivals (on Wednesday) at the Clari-
on Hotel Horizon Restaurant with DJ Norm Mullinix. We enjoyed a great night out the following evening at our kickoff at Seacrets Nite Club
on Thursday night in Ocean City, MD. We enjoyed two full days of dance classes on Friday & Saturday in the morning and early afternoon,
with open dancing after lunch and during the evening. Pam Vann taught us a new line dance to Uptown Funk! … We had some of our Classic
Hand Dancers (Roy & Gay Rodey and Rick & Abby Bookhultz) share some of their Hand Dance turns. … We also got to learn some Begin-
ner & Advanced Shag dance steps from Sherry Wilboner & Chuck Duymich and Robbi & Gary Mann. … Betty Bunch-Garcia taught “The
Hustle,” “Cha Cha,” and Intermediate Hand Dance Workshop. … Sondra Riley taught The Barn Dance and El Paso. … Buzz Payne taught
Beginner Hand Dance Workshop. … Pam Vann taught Beginner/Basic Hand Dance turns & a new Line Dance. … Friday & Saturday morn-
ing we had Yoga with Mark Hochman … Saturday morning we had a Zumba class. Saturday afternoon we had dance performances of
“Trio Dancers,” “Ladies Lead Ladies,” Ladies Leads Guys and Spotlight Dances with about 18 couples. Friday evening we had Dance Bingo.
Our theme this year was “St. Patrick’s Day.” We had Leprechauns (see names & photo on page 11). We had a drawing for the “Big Pot of
Gold,” with many chances to win based on participation in several activities starting with checking in and getting an arm band. There was
also a drawing for the “Wee Pot of Gold” with money collected from the “Coin Toss Game.” We also had a stick-on Tattoo station just out-
side the ballroom. Getting a tattoo put on got you another chance for the “Big Pot of Gold.”
Tribute to our DJs … And where would we be without the music to dance to. Here’s a GREAT BIG THANKS to our 2015 MMATB DJs ...
… Kathy K … Ron Carroll … Warren Rye … Norm Mullenix.

Dancing is like dreaming with your feet! ~ (Constanze)
From the President Here it is, the May/June newsletter…I
can’t believe that two years has gone
by so quickly. Now it is time for some
other club members to step up to the
plate and run for the offices on the Ex-
ecutive Board. Remember, our club
can’t survive if we don’t have volunteers. All of the peo-
ple who work so hard for our club are volunteers. With-
out them, we are nothing.
We have had a great couple of months, with much sup-
port from our club members at our weekly venues and
monthly dances. The St. Patricks Day dance at the Upper
Marlboro Moose was a lot of fun. Everyone enjoyed a
few more chances at the coin toss in hopes of winning
the Pot of Gold.
Our Spring dance in April was well attended also. We
had candy, easter eggs and plenty of plastic eggs for eve-
ryone to open and find the surprise in them. Our “Easter
Bonnet” contest was a lot of fun. Lots of creativity in
those hats the ladies had on. We even had an unan-
nounced visit by the Easter Bunny.
Our once-a-month Friday night dance at Union Jack has
been very successful. We have signed up for one Friday
night a month until August.
As this Board slides into the last few months of their
term, we have lots of fun planned for all of you.
Be sure to attend all of our dances in the coming months
so you don’t miss anything.
And last but not least…think about running for office. It
really is an opportunity to give back to the club that gives
all of us so much fun.

Spotlight on Larry and Earlene Stommel — By Jim Chappelear
For this edition of our Spotlight we are
focusing on longtime DC hand dancers Larry
and Earlene Stommel.
Both Larry and Earlene were born in
Washington, DC, and have lived in the local
area for most of their lives. Larry is a graduate
of Bladensburg High School, while Earlene
graduated from Surrattsville High. They met
through mutual friends at a social gathering at the Port Tobacco Marina
and now have been happily married for thirty-four years.
From their union Larry and Earlene have a large family comprised of
three children, six grandchildren and even several great grandchildren.
With family being the center of most of their lives, both are enjoying
their retirement and living in Huntingtown, Maryland.
Larry is a veteran of the US Navy who has had a very successful career
serving with the DC Fire Department. He retired from the fire
department as a Captain and later used his vast fire service experience
while serving as a fire inspector with the Marriott Corporation for an
additional fourteen years. His work with Marriott required extensive
traveling. Larry told me that Earlene enjoyed traveling with him to some
locations, but on one such assignment to Cleveland she told him that he
would have to make that trip by himself. She preferred staying at home
instead of Cleveland. No offense to any of our native Ohio members.
Earlene did work for some time outside of the home for GEICO, but for
the most part was a stay-at-home Mom. Our hats off to her and all stay-
at-home Moms.
When asked how long they had been hand dancing, they both responded
since high school and their teens. They are longtime club members who
were members of both hand dance clubs prior to the club’s consolidation.
Some years back they met Caroline and The late John Ratcliff at Wyvil’s
Tavern in Upper Marlboro. From that early social gathering they have
enjoyed their membership in the DCHDC.
From my interview I learned that Larry is quite the gardener who works a
very large vegetable garden each year growing tomatoes, potatoes, and a
variety of other vegetables. He told me that he enjoys canning the
tomatoes for later use and the preparation of various sauces. Sounds
tasty to me.
Larry is also very active in his church where he is a member of the choir
and also sings in the church’s praise band. Both Larry and Earlene have
strong spiritual backgrounds and live their lives being true to their faith.
One of the many things that I enjoy while interviewing club members for
the Spotlight article is learning their individual responses to the question
of “what makes your heart go zing?” During separate interviews with
Larry and Earlene, when asked that question, both responded with each
other’s name. That is a real testimony to a loving and long marriage.
Both are wonderful people whom I am happy to call them my friends.

The “Popcorn” Hand Dance Turn (The following was taken from a July-August 2000 D.C. Hand Dance club newsletter)
Written By: Richard (Dick) Reamy and Virginia Masino
We are two dance club members who consider ourselves at the intermediate+ level...a few turns above the tap-step, triple-step, pass
level. We enjoy the monthly dances and frequent the 94th (Aero Squadron) as much as our schedules allow but find it difficult to
squeeze in time to learn new turns. Try as we may to watch the pros in action, its next to impossible to pick up a turn. We recently
took advantage of the dance lesson offered at the joint dance on June 17th. When it came time for the intermediate lesson, the dance
instructor began by demonstrating what he was going to teach. The students who felt the lesson might be above their level were
courteous to the rest and chose the watch/learn method. The instructor was patient and treated the class with respect, neither talking
down nor over our level. Everyone in the class walked away with more confidence and a new turn under their belt.
As we stated before, we are not able to frequent the dance scene as often as we would like, and tend to become somewhat brain dead
about turns we have learned but forgotten. So this time, the day following the dance we decided to jot down some notes about the
turn so we could refresh our memory. We thought why not share our idea with others. The name of the turn was “Popcorn” and
these are our notes.
Popcorn
From a pass get to a right-over-left, gentlemen begins two steps backwards while leading his lady across his front and around his left
side and rear (gentlemen’s right hand goes over his head, left hand go to rest on top of left shoulder near neck). You should then be
in a side-by-side position (lady should be on gentleman’s right side). Gentlemen begins to turn lady one full circle (lady begins her
turn going left in towards the man), gentlemen begins to turn lady a second full circle but this time ends in a cap. From there you
can decide what works best for you.

D.C. Hand Dance Demo at Car Show … Sunday, April 12, 2015 / 1 to 2 p.m. Louise Pyles coordinated a D.C. Hand Dance demo at a Car Show in Charlotte Hall, MD at Commuter parking lot next to a Farmer’s
Market. We had a great time! We unrolled a 12-foot by 30-foot linoleum type flooring on top of the asphalt to dance on which
worked out great. We played some music from the 50’s, did “The Stroll,” some Hand Dances & Line Dances. Some Car Show at-
tendees from the crowd joined in. They had over 700 cars at the Car Show.
Thanks to everyone who came out to support this event. We had about 30 participants come out (mostly club members and some
from one of Louise Pyles Senior Center LaPlata, MD Hand Dance class) to support this Hand Dance demo. Mickey McLaughlin,
Janice Hor, Emma Crutchfiel, Mac McGuire, Danny Wise, Cecelia Astlin, Merv & Nancy Roussell, Buzz & Carolyn Payne, Gene &

BBQ ETIQUETTE …
After 4 long months of cold and winter, we are finally coming up to summer and BBQ season. Therefore it is
important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking as it’s the only type of
cooking a real man will do, probably because there is an element of danger involved.
When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion:
Routine …
1) The woman buys the food.
2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert.
3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on the tray along with the necessary cooking utensils
and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill—beer in hand.
Here comes the important part:
4) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL.
More routine …
5) The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery.
6) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning.
He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation.
Important again:
7) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.
More routine …
8) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces and brings them to the table.
9) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.
And most important of all:
10) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.
11) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed “her night off.” And upon seeing her annoyed reaction, con-
cludes that there’s just no pleasing some women.
