The club traces its beginnings to the 1921/22 sailing season when a number of members of the Delwood Canoe Club decided to band together and conduct
sailing races on Sunday afternoons. The club was actually formed at a meeting held on Friday 23 February 1923 and was originally known as Manly Sailing Club.
The club carried on for a couple of years with a motley collection of different classes of boat before it was advocated that a definite class be formed.
It was almost decided that the 14ft skiff would be the class, but the addition of several more 16ft skiffs during the 1925/26 season decided the issue. Any other type of boat racing with the club then formed a “B” class.
The 16ft skiff class had its origins on Sydney Harbour at Balmain in 1901 and, by the time it was adopted by this club, had already been established by other clubs on the Harbour and Botany Bay and in Brisbane and Perth.
The present site of the club was leased from the Sydney Harbour Trust (now Roads and Maritime Services) in January 1928 and a
shed designed to accommodate ten boats was built. This building (although by this time larger) remained until 1992 when it was demolished as part of major renovations to the club.
The club switched from Sunday to Saturday sailing for the first time in 1936/37, a tradition maintained to this day. In 1952, with the club now only racing 16ft skiffs, the name was changed to Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club.
To cater for the growing numbers of members’ children interested in sailing and to provide a training ground for potential 16ft skiff sailors, the club introduced the Flying 11 division in 1971 and a class for even younger sailors, the Manly Junior, was added in 1996/97.
Some years later it was decided that the club needed another class to bridge the gap between the Flying 11 and 16ft skiff. A new class, the 13ft skiff, was developed and this fleet has gone from strength to strength since racing commenced at the club in the 2002/03 season.

Several of our skippers (in a number of classes) have won State and/or Australian Championships, highlighting the strength the club has been able to achieve and maintain. The first to win the NSW16ft Skiff State Championship was “Lightning” sailed by Russell Slade in 1935; “Matana”, sailed by Bill McMahon, became the first boat from this club to win an Australian 16ft Skiff Championship in 1976.
We have produced champions and hosted championships: the club hosted both the State and Australian 16ft Skiff Championships for the first time in 1974/75 and has done so again several times since.
The club and its indomitable members have weathered all challenges put before them.
A severe storm badly damaged the club building (and much of the Manly/North Harbour foreshore) in May 1974. Undeterred, much of the repair work to our building was carried out on a voluntary basis during the off-season by club members.
In 2014, a substantial renovation of the clubhouse was undertaken. The disruption and the investment, though, have proved worthwhile, with Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club and its members having a stunning building to call home.
With its centenary less than a decade away, the club continues to thrive, both on the water and off it.

Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club came into being almost 100 years ago as a club for people looking to test their sailing skills. The boats and the
people may have changed through the years, but we are as passionate as ever about our racing and as strongly focused as ever on getting out
on the water and enjoying keen competition.
The club runs fleets in four classes of boat: the 16ft skiff, which bears our club name, the 13ft skiff, and two junior classes, the Flying 11 and the Manly Junior.
Unlike at many clubs, running these select classes proves very beneficial in developing confident and focused sailors, as they offer a natural and seamless progression, each class providing experience necessary to make the step to the next.
The numerous national and state champions and competent sailors produced by the club would suggest that this approach works!
16ft SkiffsThe 16ft skiff is a high performance racing boat, with a history spanning over 100 years. This skiff has evolved over time to be sailed by a three-person crew, with two on trapeze and a rig plan with large masthead asymmetrical spinnakers.
The 16ft skiff is raced throughout Australia and guarantees sailors an exhilarating sailing experience. In New South Wales, eight clubs including ourselves race the class and are members of the NSW 16ft Skiff Association.
The Manly 16ft Skiff Division comprises of approximately 20-30 boats which race every Saturday during the sailing season except when competing at outside regattas. The sailing season commences in September each year and runs through to April of the following year. If you visit East Esplanade Beach, you will see them rigging up in preparation for their afternoon start.
Racing various courses on Sydney Harbour, the 16ft Skiff Division is a highly competitive fleet whose enjoyment of sailing is paramount.

There are usually around 18 Point Score Races held throughout the season, with seven of these races (generally around one a month) forming the most prestigious competition in the Manly 16ft Skiff calendar, the Club Championship.
To be eligible for entry into the 16ft Skiff Division and the Club Point Scores, all skiffs must be registered with the club and the NSW 16ft Skiff Association. In addition all crew must be members of Manly 16ft
Skiff Sailing Club. Casual entries are permitted for skiffs not registered with the club however restrictions do apply.
The club champions these magnificent boats at every turn and does everything it can to ensure their long-term viability and popularity.
Recently two major innovations have been introduced to give this class a boost. There has been a significant

13ft SkiffsThe 13ft skiff has been designed as an intermediate skiff to provide a reasonably priced stepping stone between the Junior classes such as a Flying 11 and the 16ft skiff. Its purpose is to give teenagers the fun, experience and confidence needed to take the step into the 16ft skiff class.
The 13ft Skiff Division races every Saturday with a delayed start behind the 16ft Skiff Division throughout the sailing season. Fleet sizes fluctuate, however the level of talent and enthusiasm for the class continues to grow.
Flying 11The Flying 11 is a one design, sloop-rigged, restricted class open type sailing skiff. Being a one design class success is achieved by the skill of the helm and crew and not by variations of design or construction of the boat.
Our Flying 11 Division races every Sunday afternoon on the waters of North Harbour and the Sound of Sydney Harbour, except when competing at outside regattas. The Flying 11 Division is fully supported by its own dedicated Race Management Team and administered by the Junior Sailing Committee of the club.
Manly JuniorThe Manly Junior is a junior racing dinghy class first launched in 1959. It is amongst the smallest of classes with a “full rig” (mainsail, jib and spinnaker).
The Manly Junior is intended to be a training class for learning to sail, and a racing class in which success will be achieved by the skills of the helmsman and crew because all the boats are of identical specification and strict rules forbid their modification to gain a competitive advantage.
Today, the Manly Junior is one of the most popular classes for young sailors and since its inception has been used to teach over 30,000 children to learn how to sail. Many adults who have gone on to be world champions started in this class.

The club encourages new kids and their families to take up the sport of sailing. For total beginners we suggest they first visit our neighbours Manly Sailing next door at the Manly Yacht Club to get some experience under their belt. They run regular weekend and school holiday programs for both children and adults. From time to time we also run our own Learn to Sail Program. Keep an eye on our website or visit www.niallpowerssailingcoaching.com for more information.
Once they are up to speed and ready to race, kids can look for a crewing position here at Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club on one of our Flying 11’s or Manly Juniors, or if they have their own boat they can jump straight in with a crew and start sailing. Racing wise our kids train on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and we run a novice program during the season to help ease them in.
Our sailing program is designed so that there is a level of natural progression from the juniors into the seniors. Kids as young as 6 can get involved in sailing in the Manly Juniors (MJs) on a Sunday morning.
As they grow they move from crewing on a Manly Junior to skippering an MJ. At the same time the MJ skippers start crewing on a Flying 11 on a Sunday afternoon. This same level of progression is continued through to our 13ft and 16ft Skiff Fleets in the seniors.
While our junior and youth program has produced a wealth of talented sailors who perform well at state and national level, a great strength of the Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club program is that it offers a range of different opportunities to all levels of sailors.
Not everyone gets to become an Olympic gold medallist or world champion, but everyone is given
an equal opportunity to become as proficient as their dedication, skill and time permits.
There is great camaraderie between the kids and it’s never forgotten that everyone was a beginner once. Some of the older and more experienced juniors will often take the younger novices under their wing and show them the ropes until they feel totally comfortable competing on the water.
Although the emphasis is always placed on fun and enjoyment, the club offers a full sailing calendar and competition is keen. The Manly Junior Class race on Sunday mornings and the Flying 11 Class on Sunday afternoons. Their season follows a similar structure to the seniors, with a series of races, some of which count towards the prestigious Club Championship.
Every encouragement is given to the high-fliers, with youngsters from Manly representing the club annually at national and NSW Championships and other events such as Sail Sydney and Sail Brisbane. Our kids are a talented bunch and often fill many of the top places.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIESManly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club is not just for those who wish to enjoy competitive
sailing. It is a great community sailing club, with genuinely friendly members who value their time together as much in the clubhouse as they do out on the water.
There is always plenty going on in the clubhouse providing members with the chance to catch up with old friends or make new ones.
Great food and drink at affordable prices (not forgetting the members’ discount) and good company prove to be an unbeatable combination which draws not only many
members throughout the week, but plenty of our neighbours and the wider Manly community.
The club is proud of its extensive social calendar, which is packed with events for all the family to enjoy. Important dates in the diary such as the Melbourne Cup, Mother’s Day, New Year’s Eve and the NRL Grand Final and Bledisloe Cup are always celebrated in style and are not to be missed.
Being a family club with a thriving junior membership and you’ll often find events put on to keep the kids happy.
Parties to celebrate Christmas and the start and end of the sailing season are a fantastic way for new members to meet other members and get involved in the social side of the club.
The wonderful outdoor deck is the perfect place to while away a few hours taking in the sounds and sights of Manly Cove with a glass of wine or other beverage of choice in hand. Or watch the sports action on the big screens surrounded by your mates - it’s almost like being at the match!

HOW TO FIND US
Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club is located on the foreshore of Manly Cove, only 15km from Sydney’s CBD.
It is accessible by a range of different transport options. Scenic and exceptional water transportation, water taxis and fast ferries can drop you off only minutes from the club.
We are on the East Esplanade, approximately a 600-metre walk south from where the ferries terminate at Manly Wharf.
If you decide to take your car, you will find on-street parking, or access the numerous Manly council car parks.
Private shuttle buses and taxis and can be specially arranged to make your journey to the club unforgettable.

Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW) is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO ID: 90394) which offers Nationally Recognised First Aid Training.
SLSNSW currently delivers training at over 1600 NSW/ACT schools, 1000 child care centres, 20 NSW councils, 10 NSW Universities and hundreds of private, community and government organisations.
