Located on Port Hacking, the Royal Motor Yacht Club - Port Hacking is a recreational,

entertainment, sailing and cruising club that is proud to be at the heart of its local community.

With uninterrupted views of Port Hacking River and out over Gunnamatta Bay, our Club enjoys arguably one of the finest waterfront locations in Sydney’s south with marine facilities that are the envy of many. Put simply, RMYC - Port Hacking is your complete venue for enhancing your life on the water.

of on-water interests. There are groups who enjoy Sailing, Cruising and Fishing. Our members have also formed a long-running Social Golf Club and our Club is home to the Port Hacking Game Fishing Club, whose major event of the season, the Port Hacking 100, is the largest and richest Central Zone tournament of the season.

It is as a whole, though, that the Club is special. If you think that any club with “Royal” in its title is elitist, think again. One visit inside our clubhouse will rid you of any such preconceptions and you will soon come to realise that perhaps our name relates to the right royal welcome you receive!

In January 1934, Foundation Commodore Claude Daly and Vice Commodore

Frank O’Brian approached the Royal Motor Yacht Club of NSW with a request for the establishment of a branch of the RMYC at Port Hacking.

The idea was backed unanimously, and 8 December 1934 saw the opening on our current site of what was then RMYC - Port Hacking’s modest clubhouse.

Today the ‘Royals’ family comprises Rose Bay (Point Piper, the ‘parent’ club), Broken Bay, Toronto and Port Hacking, all incorporated organisations owned by their members.

Early activities of our Club centred around speed boat and cruiser racing and, until the late seventies and early eighties, Gunnamatta Bay was the site of the Club’s registered race circuit where traditional and ‘three pointer’ hulls raced at speeds in excess of 50mph.

Many of the proud traditions of the Club have their roots in the club’s past and continuing

association with the Royal Australian Navy.

This included the club’s premises being taken over by the Navy during World War II to house the Southern Command Headquarters of the Volunteer Coastal Patrol, under the command of Rear Admiral Gould. During this time a number of members’ boats saw service as coastal patrol vessels between Sydney and Wollongong.

Extended and modernised in 1995, and more recently in 2018, the RMYC clubhouse offers wide-ranging facilities to its members and community.

In April 2012, the Club was proud to open a new floating concrete marina with 64 berths which can accommodate vessels up to 18 metres, a substantial investment further underlining our commitment to being the Club of choice for those wishing to enjoy recreational boating activities within the Sutherland Shire area.

You might have driven along Woolooware Road, flanked by trees and desirable properties, many, many times and not even known we were there. Perhaps if you were paying particular attention you might have noticed the flagpoles and the inviting waters beyond in the distance.

Truly, RMYC - Port Hacking is one of Sutherland Shire’s best-kept secrets, though it’s not something we look to cultivate. Quite the opposite, in fact – it’s always a joy for us to see the beaming faces of those who stumble upon this undiscovered gem for the first time.

When you read positive comments from real people who have taken the time and trouble to leave reviews on Google and Facebook, it means we must be doing something right.

Invariably, the clubhouse is a lively place. The social calendar at the Royal Motor Yacht

Club - Port Hacking is varied and extensive and features something to appeal to all tastes.

Live music can be enjoyed monthly, on Friday nights in the Main Lounge.

Ladies do Lunch features lucky door prizes, fashion parades, excellent wining and dining and amazing company. The ladies are encouraged to dress in pink for the event that coincides with the Club’s Pink Month in October, where we focus on Breast Cancer awareness.

Bubbles by the Bay is another equally enjoyable regular social occasion held generally on the last Friday of each month, with wine, champagne and cocktails flowing and a special membership price for all ladies who join on the day.

Sports fans are not forgotten, either, with key events such as the State of the Origin being broadcast on the big screen at the club. Cheering on your team, surrounded by your mates is the next best thing to being there!

There are no worries about getting home after a good night out, either. Our courtesy bus is available Thursday to Sunday from 5pm to close. We also have a business partnership with Uber that allows us to contribute to member’s rides to or from the Club at any time of the day or night, 7 days a week.

Boasting the very latest in marina design, construction and inclusions, the Club’s

marina opened in April 2012. Permanent berthing of registered boat owner members’ vessels is offered through a registered waitlist.

Our excellent marine facilities, though, extend beyond modern marina pens and include:

• A professional slipway service with Tim at Port Hacking Slipway

• Marine Electrician – BGS Electronics

• A range of detailing, maintenance and skippering services from Lifestyle Boating

• Boat launching ramp for members only and a dedicated-15 minute trailer boat tie-up area on our ‘fendered’ pontoon

• Club dinghies

• Tender service on weekends and public holidays available to all ‘on-water’ memberships.

• Power and water available at the marina

• Showers

• Boat catering

• Ice

Fuel is available but needs to be pre-booked and is delivered by tanker.

Boats can only be launched between 7am and 10pm by Registered Boat Owner Members of the Club. Our Marina Assistants are available to assist on the marina at weekends and on public holidays from 8am to 5pm (8am to 6pm in daylight saving hours). They can be contacted by calling 0490 049 388.

Subject to availability, the Club is able to offer marina berths, moorings and casual berthing. Facilities include:

BerthsA full floating concrete marina with 64 berths which can accommodate vessels up to 18 metres. Berths are accessible 24 hours a day and each berth has shore power and water.

Waterfront FacilitiesThe RMYC - Port Hacking is home to one of the largest

floating concrete marinas on the Port Hacking.



MooringsThe Club has a number of permanent moorings all within close proximity to the Club.

Casual BerthingOvernight pens and casual berthing can be arranged upon request via reception. A Casual Berthing agreement must be completed and returned along with a current insurance policy that covers the vessel to the value of $10 million for public liability. This form can be downloaded from the website along with a map of the marina. Allocation of vacant pens is via the office upon return of the appropriate documents.

The experience of our sailors may differ greatly and their craft may come in all

shapes and sizes, but there is one constant that is guaranteed: the thrill and the exhilaration that comes with racing out on the water.

Our sailing season starts in September and a full year-round sailing calendar is offered for yachts in Divisions 3, 4 and 5 featuring Short Haul, Two Handed and Long Haul or Short Ocean handicap races.

In the summer the races extend from Flinders Island in the south and Sydney Harbour in the north with many taking place in Bate Bay and the Estuary. In addition our Sailing Division holds Estuary races almost every Wednesday.

The recent successful launch of non-spinnaker races on Sundays has attracted healthy fleets and, refreshingly, many who have not competed in offshore races before.

RMYC - Port Hacking sailors also compete in one of the major annual events on the CSC calendar, the Navigator’s Cup, a race held in January that commemorates Australia’s historical sailing links with Botany Bay – our first port.

Another such opportunity is Twilight Sailing, held weekly on Wednesday evenings during Daylight Saving. Less of a race, more of a social event, for many getting out on the water after a day’s work and enjoying their favourite passion as the sun sets, followed by a get-together at the Club to enjoy a drink and a bite to eat, is as good as it gets.

For new sailors, the Twilight Series is the best series to ensure a position on a boat and meet skippers, though for those with a little more sailing experience, good crew are always in demand for the more competitive events.

For the hardy souls who love to sail year-round, there is also a winter series. This is a great way for the keen sailor to keep in shape and ensure their vessel is not only put to good use, but also is in tip-top racing condition ahead of the new season.

Summer ProgramComprises six series of races, each with its own trophy. Held on Saturdays, race types include Long Haul, Short Ocean, Short Haul and Two-Handed.

Sunday Summer SailingA popular innovation and recent addition to the Club calendar, this non-spinnaker series offers up to 10 races on Sundays.

Winter ProgramTwo combined divisions for spinnaker (Division 1) and Non-Spinnaker (Division 2) yachts, with races held on Sundays on the Bate Bay Passage Course.

Wednesday Twilight22 races overall, forming 4 series, held during daylight saving.

Wednesday Afternoon: 26 races overall, forming 6 series, run in place of Wednesday Twilight at other times of the year.

The benefit of having a boat, of course, is that it can be used equally for racing or leisure

and pleasure and provides the opportunity to visit select destinations that normal landlubbers simply cannot reach!

Just five minutes out from the Club and you can be completely surrounded by the Royal National Park, without a hint of civilisation in sight.

Those with boats can enjoy activities organised by the Cruising section. There is no membership fee and the section is always keen to welcome new members.

You don’t have to be Jason Day or Adam Scott – though neither would be turned

away! – just have a love of the game of golf and for having a good time surrounded by like-minded people.

So don’t worry if you don’t know the difference between a sandwich and a sand wedge, you can still spend a fun and enjoyable time on the greens.

Just like our fishing sub-clubs, you can look forward to the stories shared about the one that got away over an enjoyable post-round beer, though our tall tales are not about that new record Kingfish or Blue Marlin, but about that missed short putt for birdie!

Each of our players is given a handicap to be able to compete in the Club Championship, which is our “major” at the end of the season. These handicaps are based on the best eight out of ten rounds.

The beauty of the handicap system (and we have players ranging from 0 to 36) is that any player can be competitive on any given day if they play to or exceed their potential.

Membership of RMYC - Port Hacking is a pre-requisite of joining the Fishing Club,

with a small additional annual membership fee payable.

The group fishes from September to May each year with a break during winter. Competitions are held each fortnight, starting at 7am on Saturday until weigh-in on Sunday at 3pm.

It is great heading back to base as anticipation builds ahead of finding out who has landed the day’s big catch. Weigh-ins are conducted at the flagstaff in the outdoor lawn area and, win or not, it’s always a fantastic social occasion, with a superb barbecue and a refreshing and well-earned drink or two to follow.

It’s worth noting, as with the rest of the club, our sub-club is very much geared towards families. Juniors are positively encouraged and every youngster receives an award for a weighable fish.

The Annual Presentation Night is held in July with a host of major trophies presented, though the Club Champion prize, which goes to the member earning the most points throughout the season, is the big one they all want to land.

The Club awards two prestigious memorial trophies. The George Payne Memorial Trophy is for the largest fish caught during the year and the John Durkin Memorial Trophy – or President’s Award – is awarded at the President’s discretion for work done within the Club throughout the fishing season.

The Club enjoys strong affiliations with the sport’s governing bodies and many of its

members past and present hold a range of state, Australian and world records.

Membership is strong, with well over 250 financial members and some 50 plus boats ranging in size from 19’ to 65’.

During the fishing season members represent the club at various tournaments Australia wide and our Club Point Score days are held twice a month over the weekends with members being able to elect either Saturday or Sunday to fish.

During the year there are many club functions and events, including members’ meetings with guest speakers, boating excursions and overnights away.

The major event of the year is the Port Hacking 100 Tournament, held towards the end of the season in April/May, which attracts hundreds of competitors and their vessels from around Australia all eager to experience

an exhilarating weekend of action and the chance to land a share of the huge cash and prize pool on offer.

The Port Hacking 100 is the largest and richest Central Zone tournament of the season and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2017. The entry fee also includes one free ticket to the presentation dinner at RMYC - Port Hacking that concludes the event on the Sunday evening.
