Believe * Educate * Achieve
Welcome back! I hope you all had a relaxing summer
vacation. I’m happy that we’re able to start the year off
with our new contract and a 2% raise! A teacher salary
pay scale can be found here. Just a reminder that from
now on you must provide 4 school days notice to take a
personal day, for the entire school year, except in the case
of emergencies. With that being said we are piloting a
new incentive for members who use 4 or less total days
(sick and personal combined) over the course of the
school year. Maximum payout is $2,500. Vacation days,
bereavement days, graduation days and professional days
will not count against your total.

mer vacat ion whi le en joying some del i -

New Contract Highlights
Percentage raises: Year one-2%, Year two-
3%, Year three-2%
We can now convert 5 of our sick days into
family sick days, once per school year.
We received an increase in the total amount
of money we can earn for accumulated sick
days at the end of our careers. Instead of
$12 per day, it increases as follows: Days1-
99=$15/day; Days 100-149=$25/day; Days
150-189=$40/day; Days 190-210=$55/day
The individual tuition reimbursement cap
has been raised from $500 to: Year 1-$550;
Year 2-$600; Year 3-$650. The district will
also create a reimbursement bank of
$15,000 to be used on qualifying learning
experiences which take place outside the
traditional classroom model (to be capped
at $1,000 per individual).
Fund Our Future victory means more resources for public schools
The good news: Because of effective advocacy and organizing by our members, joined by parents and coalition
partners, the new state budget approved on Monday, July 22, puts a foundation in place for more equitably
funded public schools, particularly in low-income communities. It is our first Fund Our Future victory!
Under the fiscal year 2020 budget, Massachusetts schools will receive $269 million in new Chapter 70 money
— the biggest boost in years — based on the recommendations of the Foundation Budget Review Commis-
sion. This is huge! Read MTA’s statement and more details about both the preK-12 and higher education
budgets.
The bad news: This is just a one-year budget — NOT a bill. The Legislature must make a long-term commit-
ment to filling the more than $1 billion hole in state funding for schools. We need a bill that meets the core principles in the Promise Act. And we need legislators to move the Cherish Act out of committee and toward pas-
sage so we can reverse decades of cuts to public higher education.
Because of the legislative recess, State House watchers are not expecting action on fund-ing legislation until at least September. We will continue to fight to win a bill that com-
mits the Legislature to phasing in at least $1 billion in new money for our public schools.
Salary Column Placement
Your salary is based on your level of education
(Bachelors, Masters, Masters +30, Masters +45, Masters
+60). In order to advance to the next salary column, you
must notify the Superintendent in writing by October 1st
of the preceding year. For example if you wish to transfer
from Bachelors to Masters at the start of the next school
year (9/20), you must submit a letter
of intent to the Superintendent by
October 1, 2019.

Shining Star Members!
Do you know a BEA member that
should be recognized in the BEAM?
We want you to share with us all of the
positive things going on in your build-
ings, that otherwise, we wouldn’t know about. Each
month we would like to recognize some of our
“shining star” members. If you know someone that
you would like to be recognized, please email a short
blurb (50-75 words) expressing why they are a shin-
ing star!
