May of 2020 sounds like a long way off, but it's not too early to start thinking about it will be our club’s turn to host the QC again. For those new to the club, QC is short for Quint Clubs and is a gathering of several clubs, quint for five, although there are six now so it's actually QC+. Clubs take turn hosting each year and since Modesto last had a turn in 2014, our turn will come in 2020.

The upcoming QC is promoted at the previous year’s meeting, so we need to have a good idea of what we are going to do by May of 2019. We need a date, as well as where we will host the meeting. As I recall for 2014 we spent nearly a year finding a hotel that could accommodate our needs and negotiating a contract. Modesto isn't really a destination city, so there are few quality hotels with suitable parking and catered dining for a large group. As we begin the new year I'll be encouraging suggestions for a location for our event. We have hosted the event four times; once in Oakdale and three times in Sonora. While Sonora is nice, I'd like to do something different. Since our club is the Modesto area club, we could hold it anywhere from Merced to Stockton, the I-5 area and to the Sierra foothills. We'll start talking about this during our meetings early next year and I'll be asking for volunteers to help organize the events, as well as help in the selection of the hotel. We need to also reflect on things that we liked and did not like about previous QC meetings. A couple of examples from me, I liked the driving skills event in Ventura, but I didn’t like going other places for meals as we had to do in Tehachapi.

I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts as we go forward. Don Wigle

Apple Dumplings With Brandy Sauce

by Katrina Tellez

2 Cups Flour 1 Tsp Baking Powder ½ Tsp. Salt 2 TBL Sugar 1/3 Cup Butter or more until crumbly 2/3 Cup Milk Set Aside for filling: 1 Cup Sugar, 1 Tsp. Cinnamon/whatever spices you like. Sift the first 4 ingredients, then cut in butter and add milk. Roll out and cut in squares or round pieces. Cut apples in half. Use ½ an apple in each dumpling and pinch the dough around the top of the apple covering completely. Into the center of the apple in each dumpling ½ pat of but-ter, and 1 or 2 TBL of the filling sprinkled over the top and in the center. Bake at 350 until golden brown. 40/50 min.

I used an apple peeler/corer. Small Gala/Fuji apples. 7 inch circles. Each batch makes about 8 dumplings.

Brandy Sauce

3 Cups Water 2 ½ TBL Flour ½ Tsp Salt 2 ¼ Cup Sugar 2 ½ TBL Butter 3 TBL Brandy or to taste, I added A LOT!
