THE CHALLENGEAlthough the use of Multi-Function Printers (MFPs) helps

to promote an office’s focus on minimizing environmental

impacts, reality is that many offices generally do not have

exclusive 100% MFP deployments.

In a mixed-fleet environment, multiple Single-Function

Printers may promote higher overall energy consumption

and excessive print, and wastage propelled by “all-in-one”

consumable assemblies as well as the proximity of the

devices.

THE GOALIt is essential for the Customers to clearly understand

the true environmental impacts that desktop printers can

have on their day-to-day operations. By eliminating the

Single-Function Printers and replacing them with Multi-

Functional devices, customers can truly benefit from an

optimized document workflow.

officeFLOW ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

These three benefit areas make up the foundation of

Canon’s officeFLOW Model for optimized document

workflows. The officeFLOW Model shows customers why

the answer is clear when considering an MFP exclusive

environment over one that is of a mixed fleet of MFPs,

desktop printers and even MFPs produced by printer

manufacturers.

Although Functional and Financial Benefits are often

integral in office equipment decisions, Environmental

Benefits are sometimes overlooked.

Due to the nature of desktop printers, their inclusion in the

office print environment ultimately leads to inefficiencies

when trying to achieve a lower impact on the

environment. Conversely, the workflows, energy

consumption and feature set associated with MFP

deployments are friendlier to the environment.

Three important benefit areas which customers

should consider when making office equipment

decisions are Functional Benefits of the offering,

Financial Benefits and Environmental Benefits.

Take control of unnecessary wastage

Single-Function Printers and desktop devices may be

convenient, but this convenience may have a negative

impact on the environment.

Employees that have

personal printers on their

desks can print unnecessary

documents such as personal

emails, coupons or

itineraries. This significantly

increases wastage of paper.

Studies show that only 25% of what we print at work is

really needed.1

The remaining 75% of print outs are often shredded and

are not necessarily recycled.

Additionally, the cost of shredding documents should be

considered, both from financial cost perspective as well as

from an environmental perspective. You don’t need to

shred and recycle what you don’t create.

With Multi-Function Printers centrally located in the office

environments, the amount of wastage can be reduced.

Employees would need to walk to the device which means

they would likely print only what is necessary.

Additionally, with full size

Multi-Function Printers

having a set of features

including high quality

scanning and large colour

touch LCD screens; it is

much easier to deploy a

paper reduction strategy in the office. Through scanning

and sending functionality, paper-based processes may be

replaced with digital workflows that not only reduce the

paper wastage, but also have a tremendous impact on

employee productivity. An office with less paper is clearly

impossible to attain with Single-Function printers as by

nature they are output only devices.

Reduce your energy consumptionUsing a Multi-Function device versus

multiple Single-Function Printers can also

significantly reduce the energy

consumption. This is true even if all devices

are Energy Star® compliant.

For example, an office environment with 15 Single-Function

Laser Printers typically consumes between 200-300 kWh of

energy a year.2 If you would replace the Single-Function

Laser Printers with two Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE

MFP devices, the energy consumption could be less than

135 kWh.3

By simply refreshing their print fleet and placing two Multi-

Function devices into their office environments, the

customers can achieve over 47% of reduction in their

energy/CO2 consumption a year.

Minimize your carbon footprintMinimizing carbon footprint is an area that is becoming

increasingly important due to the growing awareness of

climate changes.

According to Gartner, the

average printer operates well

below 5% of their capacity.

The fewer printers an

organization has, the lower

the carbon footprint is.

Considering that most office

devices are underutilized, a reduction in devices is certainly

possible by centralizing devices to workgroups. It is wise to

save resources by sharing printers and implementing a true

workgroup approach where Multi-Function devices are

used by a group of employees instead of having many small

printers scattered around the office.

Take care of the consumablesIn many cases Single-Function Printers operate using a

cartridge-based system with both drum and toner

combined in the same cartridge.

Every time the toner is used, the full cartridge needs to be

replaced. However, this does not necessarily mean that

the drum has been fully consumed. Nevertheless, it must

be replaced because it is a part of an “all-in-one”

assembly. This may increase the overall wastage of

materials.

For Multi-Function devices,

drums and toners are

generally two separate

components; each having

their own yield which

means the users can replace

them if and when they are

fully consumed.

Be truly responsibleHaving an exclusive MFP fleet can

be in line with a customer’s social

responsibility activities. Studies

show that firms are becoming more

responsible; they want to do well by

doing good, and often support

great causes or advocate in many

prominent initiatives.

Being socially responsible includes being friendlier to the

environment and conserving the resources we have on

our Planet. It is important to do business with companies

sharing the same values and beliefs.

Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE Multi-Function devices

through their exceptional technological advancements as

well as unique set of environment-conscious features like

Store in User Inbox, Secured Print, Job Forwarding,

Department ID Management, Access Management System

and Auto/Weekly Shutdown Timer can truly contribute to

taking your Company to the next level and be friendlier to

the environment.
