    DEACON OF THE MONTH

    Danny Nielsen

January June 2016 Emphasis Encouraging to GO

missions /miSHns/ (noun) proclaiming the Gospel message within and outside of your culture; taking the good news of Jesus Christ where it has not been taken or accepted before.

Missions is listed as a noun but the truth is, it is a verb and a noun. Missions is something we do and is what we are. Missions, as a whole, is what we do in response to the great love, grace, and mercy we have experienced through salvation. During this third six months of our Vision Fulfillment Strategy we will encourage others to GO in the Name of Jesus Christ. That going may be across the street, across the county, or across the world. We will spend our time during this emphasis meeting the needs of those around us and taking the gospel to the nations and to our neighbors. (Simply put, Missions)

    WMU Speaks...

ALL FOR YOU Surrender * Sacrifice * Serve

Do you ever feel as if you are not making much of a difference?

If you are feeling discouraged, I have the cure; attend the

Missions Extravaganza and Annual Meeting of WMU North

Carolina. Thats right! Attend a meeting! Why on earth would I

suggest such a thing? One reason is when I attend this missions

celebration, I realize that I am part of something big. My organi-

zation may be small, but I am an important part of one of the

largest womens organizations in the world. But together, we are

making a difference. I enjoy hearing the missionaries speak,

hearing firsthand what is happening around the world and I

enjoy the fellowshipseeing women, and a few men, that I have

met through the years. Its inspiring hearing, seeing, meeting

missionaries face to face. It enables me to know our leaders

their values. It encourages me and that enables me to encourage

the whole church in missions matters. We are informed about the

business of WMU. We elect our president and recording secre-

tary. But more, I better know how to pray for the missions needs

and our missionaries. I am energized to do more, to bring back

what I have learned. You know, energy is contagious. Others

just might catch it from me. So we all benefit!

We are getting registered and prepared to go to Missions

CAROLINA at Roanoke Rapids in July. Please come to our

benefit...the Pinto Bean supper, Sunday night, May 1 at 6:00 PM.

monies collected will help with our trip. Remember summertime

is missions time. Be on mission by helping with Operation

In-As-Much, Saturday Bible School and Proctor at Haw River

Elementary and you will make a difference

In Christ, Sheila Rimmer, WMU Director

Annual Picnic for the Visually Impaired A picnic for people with visual impairments in our Community will be

held on May 12, at 6:00 PM at Riverside Baptist Church, 1568 East

Harden Street, Graham. There will be a program.

May 7th If you can help with light construction projects or hauling off debris please let Pastor Jonathan know as soon as possi-ble. Men and women are needed for the projects we have planned.

  • Our world does not simply need people who know

more facts about God, but rather people who are falling

deeper in love with who God is.

That is a quote from the book Life on Mission written by Dustin

Willis and Aaron Coe. In the book they discuss what it looks like to live

every day on mission for the kingdom of God. One chapter in particular has really been

meaningful to me as I have read over it lately. In a chapter where they discuss spiritual

maturity, they discuss three basics about God that all believers must understand. Those basics are:

The Supremacy of God, The Sovereignty of God, and The Love of God.

The Supremacy of God refers to the understanding that God is at the center of His mission and

that, by default, we are not. If we are to believe and understand that God is supreme, then we are in a

good position to mature spiritually. When we understand that God is over all and supreme to all in

this world and above this world we end up with a very high view of God, which is exactly what we

see in scripture. God is Holy and is to be feared (treated with reverence). Throughout scripture we see

people like Nehemiah, Esther, and Paul, just to name a few, who truly understood Gods supremacy.

The Sovereignty of God refers to the understanding that God is involved in every aspect of His

creation from providing food for us (Matt. 6:11) to knowing the number of days we will live (Ps. 139).

All of our talents are a result of Gods goodness to us (1 Cor. 4:7). When we understand the Sover-

eignty of God we understand that God is at work in the world and is asking His children to respond in

obedience to that work. It is not up to us to determine the focus of our mission; it is up to us to follow

    God.

The Love of God is one that we probably all feel like we have a good handle on. The Love of God

refers to the deep, almost mysterious love of God towards us as His creations. From the creation of

man in Genesis, to the fall, to the introduction of sin by man, to the sacrifice of Jesus, we see the love of

God. It is because of that love that we know how to love and because He first loved us, we in turn love

    (1 John 4:19).

With these three basics about God in mind, the question becomes do we truly believe these?

And if we do, do we practice them in our daily lives? Ask yourself, how would my life be different if I

were to begin applying these basic truths about God to my life? How would the lives of those around

you be different? This is what it means to be on mission for and with God every day. Missions is not

something we do or go to, missions, for the believer is a way of life. We are to be living life on mission

every single day. Through this life on mission, we will see the spiritual maturity that is lacking in our

    churches and believers today.

    - Pastor Jonathan
