CONCERNED BLACK MEN OF RICHMOND, VA, INC P. O. Box 4747

Richmond, VA 23220 (804) 343-2680

September 2, 2018

Greetings …

As we enter another school year, it is our hope that the young men involved with Concerned Black Men of Richmond

(CBM-R) through its Youth Corps are off to an educationally prosperous start. Tim Mallory, in his 3rd year as president of

CBM-R, extends a hearty welcome and words of encouragement to our Youth Corps members and parents as we chart another

course toward the goal of knowledge empowerment.

Since its inception, CBM-R has proven to be a mechanism for providing positive role models and mentors to the youth

of Metropolitan Richmond. That mission is accomplished through our initiatives and programs with the Youth Corps. Our

agenda is the same as in years before – the promotion of learning and maturity through fun-filled activities.

As with all CBM-R programs and activities, events planned for this year will incorporate our five focus areas: career

development, academic development, cultural awareness, personal growth and recreation.

The first CBM-R Youth Corps activity will be our annual Orientation, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday,

September 15, 2018 at the Ginter Park Branch Library at 1200 Westbrook Avenue (At the intersection with Brook

Road, one block away from Azalea Avenue). (Please be on time) It is very important that you and your son attend this

session, even if your son has participated before. Everyone will have to fill out a new application for the 2018/2019

school year..

Also parents, please be mindful as the time approaches for the United Way campaign that CBM-R is one of the non-

profit agencies that benefits from this annual fundraiser. We appreciate your continued support and donations may be

designated through the United Way Local Government & Schools Campaign for CBM-R with our organization code 0198. The

Virginia State Campaign code for CBM-R is 3771. The Federal Campaign code for CBM-R is 58432. Lastly, donations can

also be given directly to CBM-Richmond.

We look forward to seeing you at the Orientation.

NOTE: Please let us know whether your son will be participating in our program this year so that we will know

whether to keep sending correspondence to you. Thank you.

About the Team

RCR was formally founded in 2016 in hopes of expanding the sport we love, rowing, to

those who have never had the opportunity to experience it. We partner with the VCU

Crew Team, the University of Richmond Crew Team, the Virginia Boat Club, Sportable,

and the City of Richmond to provide and facilitate our programs. We offer adaptive

programs, competitive programs, high school rowing, development camps, corporate

rows, and veteran’s rowing. RCR is dedicated to promoting a community on and around

the James River. We strive to make rowing and other water sports available to everyone

regardless of background, ability, or experience. We promote an active Richmond and

provide all members of the community an opportunity for recreation on the river.

 Why Should You Row?

RCR is excited to announce we will be partnering with RPS and Franklin Military Academy

to offer the first ever Richmond City High School Rowing Team. This team will feature

athletes from the city’s public schools and introduce them to the sport of rowing. Athletes

will compete against area schools, train for state and national competition, and aspire for

potential college opportunities. Strong leadership, teamwork, and individual goal setting

are strongly emphasized as students better themselves on and off the water.

Many colleges at the DI, DII, and DIII level offer NCAA rowing scholarships for men’s and

women’s rowing. Many local Virginia schools offer these scholarships and recruit in-state.

We believe rowing can provide another avenue for Richmond student-athletes to afford

college and compete in a sport they love.

Requirements for Participation in RCR

Participation in the Rowing Team goes beyond the individual rower or coxswain. Our success relies on participation from the families, as well as hard work and dedication from the coaches and athletes. RCR is a nonprofit organization; we require a certain level of commitment from our rowers, parents and booster club members in order to operate and function successfully.

1. Fees: Thanks to the generous support of Richmond Public Schools and Dick’s

Sporting Goods, the program is provided at no cost to the participants. 2. Fundraising: While the program is free to the participants, we believe that athletes who

invest into the sport take ownership of its success. Through that, we ask each student to fundraise $50 OR:

Fax (804) 780-8054 Office of The Principal

MAKE A POSITIVE/HONEST CALL TO PARENTS IN THE FIRST MONTH

Volunteering: Athletes have the option to volunteer in place of fundraising. We ask athletes to volunteer 5 hours each semester. Volunteering can be done through RCR or with a different program at the parent/athlete’s request. 4. Swim Test: Rowers need to pass a swim test in order to participate in the program. The swim test consists of treading water for 2 minutes, a 100-meter swim (any stroke, no time limit) and donning a life vest. A swim waiver will go out to each parent and must be signed prior to starting. 5. GPA Requirements: Rowers must maintain a minimum of a 2.5 GPA and be in good standing with Franklin Military Academy. RCR works to create the best athletic and academic environment and will strive to provide support for our students. 6.
