Grant News 9 Latest News UW-L Chemistry Professor Receives Sixth NSF Award Dr. Keith Beyer, Professor in the UW-L Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry and Director of the UW-L Environmental Studies Program, has received notice from the National Science Foundation (NSF) of a new grant award that is his sixth received from the agency since 2000. The new award brings Dr. Beyer’s total NSF research grants to $1.4 million. The scholarly work funded by the awards has provided research opportunities for numerous undergraduates, resulting in 14 publications with 24 undergraduate student co-authors. The most recent publication was published in April 2014 in the Journal of Physical Chemistry with alumnus Jason Schroeder and senior chemistry major Jared Kissinger. Dr. Beyer’s most recent NSF award places him first nationally in the total dollars granted by the NSF Atmospheric Chemistry program to a sole principal investigator at a predominantly undergraduate institution.

Dr. Keith Beyer

Professor of Chemistry and Director of UW-L Environmental Studies Program

UW-L Graduate Student Awarded NSF Graduate Research Fellowship UW-L graduate student, Amber Miller, has been awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship. According to NSF, the Graduate Research Fellowship program “recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited US institutions.” The fellowship provides up to three years of stipend and tuition support. Amber will be a student in UW-L’s Master of Science in Biology degree program. Amber’s research advisor and faculty mentor is Meredith Thomsen, Associate Professor in the Department of Biology. Working with Dr. Thomsen, Amber will devote her research efforts to a project entitled “New Ecosystems, New Rules: Facilitating Natural Succession in Heavily Invaded Ecosystems with Applied Nucleation.”

NIH Changes Resubmission Policy The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have updated the agency’s resubmission policy as of April 17, 2014. The updated policy still allows a single resubmission per application, but ideas that were unsuccessfully submitted as a resubmission (application type A1) may now be presented in a new grant application (application type A0) without having to substantially redesign the content and scope of the project. The resubmission of an idea as new means the application will be considered without an association to a previous submission; the applicant will not provide an introduction to spell out how the application has changed or respond to previous reviews; and reviewers will be instructed to review it as a new idea even if they have seen it in prior cycles. While there may not be major changes to the research direction of these previously reviewed ideas, NIH expects that applicants will nevertheless take advantage of previous reviewers’ comments to strengthen the applications for each submission.

Grant News 11 Grants 101 Inside the US Department of Education Title III Grant Program

Starting July 1, 2014, UW-La Crosse is eligible to apply for funding from the US Department of Education (ED) Title III Part A: Strengthening Institutions grant program. ED Title III funding supports a broad array of projects in institutions of higher education, and it is the goal for our campus to develop a collaborative plan for how to leverage this new potential source of support. To that end, this article presents some highlights of the support available through the Title III program in an effort to foster a campus-wide conversation about the project we might collectively propose. Given the program’s funding cycle, UW-L is planning for a potential application that would likely be submitted in June 2015. If you have ideas and/or would like to participate in the process, please contact the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs, as we are serving as the gathering point for percolating ideas.

Program Synopsis

The ED Title III Strengthening Institutions grant program aims to support institutions of higher education to become self-sufficient and expand their capacity to serve low-income students by providing funds to improve and strengthen their academic quality, institutional management, and fiscal stability.

Types of Projects Supported

Grant funds may be used for planning, faculty development, and establishing endowment funds. Administrative management, and the development and improvement of academic programs are also supported. Examples of eligible projects include:

• Development and improvement of academic programs • Purchase, rental, or lease of scientific or laboratory equipment for educational purposes, including

instructional and research purposes • Construction, maintenance, renovation, and improvement in classrooms, libraries, laboratories, and other

instructional facilities, including the integration of computer technology into institutional facilities to create smart buildings

• Support of faculty exchanges, faculty development, faculty fellowships, and other faculty development activities, such as workshops on high impact pedagogies, technology, and instructional methods for teaching under-prepared students

• Purchase of library books, periodicals, and other educational materials • Funds management, administrative management, and acquisition of equipment for use in strengthening

funds management • Establishing or improving an endowment fund • Creating or improving facilities for internet or other distance learning academic instruction capabilities

Awards

During the 2013 federal fiscal year, 33 awards were made under the Title III Strengthening Institutions program. The average annual award amount for the same fiscal year was $431,364. On average, grants are awarded for a period of five years.

Additional Information

Additional program information and abstracts of previously funded projects are available on the ED Title III program website: http://www2.ed.gov/programs/iduestitle3a/awards.html.
