The tools and guides for these activities are contained in the NEED Monitoring and Mentoring Kit. (Each

This class is an introductory session on the benefits of mindfulness for school age children in K-8 grades and

for those individuals interested in developing a mindfulness curriculum within their school. Scientific

research on mindfulness with children reveals increased orientation to attention and decreased anxiety, each

supporting the capacity for learning. Mindfulness practices teach children kindness, compassion, and

empathy along with skills for being less reactive - therefore enabling the ability to make wise choices in their

behavior. Participants will learn how mindfulness practices can be incorporated in the classroom in a way

that supports diverse learning needs of students and creates a compassionate learning environment.

Participants will also learn ways to develop and engage in their own mindfulness practice as a way to cope

with stress, become more self-compassionate and increase their sense of effectiveness in teaching.

learn to recognize the signs of suicide and discuss strategies for helping students. The session will give

educators a better sense of how students are using technology and how to help students navigate their online

KMAC Museum defines the 5 primary 21st Century Learning Skills as Core Identity, Critical Thinking,

Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity. Connecting with the big ideas and creative practices of visual

artists are key ways of developing these skill while respecting individuality. Visual arts practice is rooted in

experimentation and adaptation, which are essential for the differentiation of instruction. The full day

workshop will allow teachers and administrators to discuss, create, and reflect. Participants will begin the

day reviewing art works and discussing current philosophies integrating visual arts with reading, math, and

social studies. Then participants will form small collaborative work groups to transform 2D drawing into a

3D sculpture representing a group's core identity, including values and beliefs. Finally, participants will use

various strategies to reflect on their experiences. During this process participants will experience ways to

The overall aim of this course is to provide an understanding into the world of Dyslexia. 5-15% of the

population have dyslexia. Dyslexia may vary in terms of severity. The course provides an interactive

discussion on the myths and facts of dyslexia, recent research on dyslexia, structured literacy, and the concept

of dyslexia. In addition, we learn what are the causes of dyslexia, how dyslexia manifests, recognize the

signs of Dyslexia, help identify dyslexia in the classroom, and better understand the strengths and weaknesses

of dyslexic students. Further, we will discuss emotional consequences of reading difficulties. In closing, a

brief dyslexia simulation will be shown to give a better understanding of how a dyslexic child reads.

In this workshop bullying will be defined in contrast to other forms of youth violence and conflict, and we

will examine the fruits of recent scholarship addressing bullying in our schools and communities. We will

look at difficult cases that compel us to think of bullying as a genuine social justice and pro-life issue, that is,

an issue that religious leaders have a rightful and critical place addressing, while also emphasizing that most

of the violence is "hidden". Participants will be engaged in a multi-media presentation that will encourage

them to draw from their own experiences as well as learn from one another. I will offer my own suggestions

for activities that have proven helpful in my work with students of elementary, middle, and high school age.

We will especially consider the role that religious leaders (including teachers, counselors, administrators, etc.)

can play in addressing the violence that is bullying. The workshop will include concrete steps required to be

part of the solution, working towards a whole-community approach that gets us past the false notion that

bullying is only "the school's problem."

The program for the day will consist of the two themes for the year of mercy: The God of Mercy

and People of Mercy. The morning session will focus on one’s personal understanding of God’s Mercy

through the Word of God (scripture), Pope Francis writings, and other pertinent authors. The quiet

reflection time will allow for personal integration of the content by each participant.

The afternoon session will illustrate how we are people of mercy by using the corporal and

spiritual works of mercy. This will include scripture for each work of mercy, a prayer, and questions for

reflection along with practical ways of living the work of mercy in our daily life. What are some ways

to share these Works of Mercy with your students and parents? The day will consist of presentations,

personal reflection, prayer, and sharing with one another.

We constantly need to contemplate the mystery of mercy.

It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. Our salvation depends on it.

Pope Francis

Sister Betty Drewes is a member of the Sisters of Saint Benedict, Ferdinand, IN and is involved with

the Spirituality Ministry. She is Director of the Kordes Center and Coordinator of Hospitality, and

serves as a spiritual director. She leads retreats, days of reflection, and various personal growth

programs. Among her prior ministries she was on the Ferdinand Benedictine leadership team, director

of ongoing formation, and director of spirituality for the Benedict Inn Retreat Center in Beech Grove,

Indiana. Sister Betty has professional degrees in education, counseling, and spirituality.

Sister Jane Will is a member of the Sisters of St. Benedict, Ferdinand, IN. She serves on the

community’s Spirituality Ministry team as Program Director. She is also director of Strategic Planning

for her community. She has a doctorate in psychology and she is a licensed clinical psychologist,

spiritual director, and presenter of workshops and retreats. She is a licensed life teacher and has taught

on the junior high to college level. She has also served as formation director for postulants and novices

and as subprioress in her community.

Requirements for Catechetical Ministry

The concentration in Catechetical Ministry exists to form persons in their catechetical ministries to adults, youth, or children in the Archdiocese of Louisville. This formational process fosters the acquisition of appropriate applied knowledge and skills as well as the continued spiritual formation of catechists.

PARTICIPANTS Persons called to minister in a formal way by proclaiming and teaching God’s Word are encouraged to participate in catechetical formation, specifically Catholic School Teachers of Religion/Theology, Parish Catechists (of Adults, Youth or Children), Parish Catechetical Leaders, Coordinators of RCIA, Principals, Youth Ministers, Campus Ministers, and Adult Faith Formation Leaders.

REQUIREMENTS There are three levels within the concentration. Additional hours taken in each level will be applied to the next level. Coursework may be taken through the Archdiocese of Louisville Ministry Institute (ALMI), media options, online courses, or other pre-approved offerings. No more than 20 percent (40 hours) of the required coursework may be completed on an individual basis; the remaining requirements must be fulfilled through live, gathered offerings and interactive online options.

LEVEL I - ASSOCIATE CATECHIST (completion of 20 hours in the following coursework plus ongoing formation) In addition to Overview of Catechetical Ministry Part 1, no more than 5 hours may be taken either online or as a media option for the completion of the Associate Level.

Sacrament preparation involves both helping people to understand the value of the gift God offers and how to open themselves to receive the gift. This workshop will explore how to communicate the Church’s teaching on sacraments in light of the new evangelization. It will provide practical insights for guiding children and their families to ongoing conversion nurtured by a full sacramental life. Presenter: Dr. Jo Ann Paradise is a National Consultant for Our Sunday Visitor Curriculum Division and works with the product development team in creating resources for children and their families. Jo Ann has served as catechetical leader in the Diocese of Pittsburgh for over 32 years. A teacher at both the grade school and high school levels in Catholic schools as well as an adjunct faculty member of several universities in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Jo Ann gives keynotes and workshops at diocesan conferences throughout the United States and Canada. Through her stories, Jo Ann motivates educators and catechists to prepare children to meet the risen Lord and then learn how to respond to his invitation through a life of discipleship. This workshop introduces the basic themes of the encyclical and invites a deeper reflection on how we might integrate its message more deeply into our lives, teaching, and other ministries.

Presenter: Kyle T. Kramer is the Executive Director of the Passionist Earth and Spirit Center in Louisville, KY (www.earthandspiritcenter.org), an interfaith spirituality center offering programming in meditation, ecology, and social compassion. He is the former director of graduate lay degree programs and spiritual formation for Saint Meinrad, a Benedictine monastery and school of theology. How can we truly understand the rich tradition of Church? It can seem overwhelming. There are many familiar names, places, and events of the past but how did those people and events lead up to the Vatican II Church? The first 3-hour session will focus on people and events surrounding the Reformation (1500’s) to the Anti-Catholic movement of the Know-Nothings in America (1850’s). The second 3-hour session will continue with Vatican I (1860’s) concluding with the latest papal encyclical of Pope Francis, Laudato si’ (2015). The complete session will present an overview of the philosophical, political, and religious developments of the last 500 years. Adults who have Intellectual Disabilities have spiritual needs. Many welcome the opportunity to become more aware of God’s presence with them when they have an appropriate catechesis. Hopefully this course will promote a better sense of belonging for them.

Rooted in the Gospel healings of Jesus, and stepping out of a dark history, many adults with developmental disabilities are now welcomed into a full life within the Catholic Church. Having been included in parish life in the recent past, and to hasten a better sense of belonging, adults with cognitive developmental disabilities can now be offered opportunities to enrich their faith. Adult learning and faith formation need to be situated within the vision of lifelong catechesis. This course will explore the definition of spirituality offered above and what is necessary for growing in the spiritual life, namely, how to recognize the Spirit in all things. In addition to discussing spirituality, this course will offer guidance and provide the learner with the opportunity to grow in prayer and praying through the exploration of a variety of types of prayer, each rooted in our Catholic tradition.

Pope Francis has "a dream: a Church working without hesitation on a path of pastoral and missionary conversion": an attitude that is personal and communal, "capable of transforming" habits, styles, language, and facilities, directing them towards evangelization rather than "self-preservation". (LR 11/29/13). The "dream" is the focus of the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel). It is the fruit of labors of the Synod of Bishops on the "New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Faith" (October 2012). It is clear that the Pope's intentions, though spurred by the recommendations of the Synod Fathers, go beyond. It is not presented as a post-synodal document but expresses his concerns for the Church and the world today. "I wish to encourage the Christian faithful", Pope Francis writes "to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church's journey in years to come". There is a sense of newness in The Joy of the Gospel that radiates from the document's originality, style and character than from other Church documents. Survey of Catholic Social Teaching will cover the seven key themes of Catholic Social Teaching outlined by the bishops: the life and dignity of the human person; the call to family, community, and participation; rights and responsibilities; option for the poor and vulnerable; the dignity of work and the rights of workers; solidarity; and care for God's creation. Also included is a process for defining and effecting change related to significant social justice issues at the diocesan and parish level. They wish to separate Church and state and relegate to government the solutions to problems that injure others, deny a basic quality of life, or damage God's creation. The course will reiterate the centrality of social justice teachings for all Christians, and its consistent independence from any political ideology of the left or the right. Too often faith is attended to only on Sundays. During the rest of the week, Sunday's wisdom and challenges, plus its understandings and right judgments, are often left untouched. This course introduces a way to go beneath day-to-day events to find meaning within them, to make decisions about them, and to invite an awareness of the abiding presence of God, any day of the week!

One of the powerful witnesses of Jesus the Son is that his life was completely intertwined with God the Father. Nothing separated him from his relationship with the Father, and his relationship with the Father influenced all that he did. This course seeks to assist its participants in taking on the ways of Gospel through theological reflection. What does it take to keep faith and life integrated? How can we do that specifically? What is gained when we do? This is a course that answers those questions and at the same time provides ecclesial leaders some skills to facilitate theological reflection in groups.
