During the past, Dankook University has grown as one of Korea's leading private universities underits founding motto of 'National Salvation, Independence and Self Reliance' as well as the twinguiding principles of 'Truth and Service' underlying the motto. Now our university is at an importantturning point as it starts a new chapter in its history. Amid the global changes taking place in the 21stcentury, defined by the knowledge-based economy and information society, the race to cultivatenational talent is accelerating. With market principles being applied to college education, universitiescan no longer advance unless they secure a future-oriented growth engine.

In order to respond to these macro changes, Dankook University built its new Jukjeon Campus aswell as announced its A+ Vision 2017 project. These are two core goals that must be met for thesuccess of this master plan in which we will invest 540 billion KRW over the next ten years.

We are aiming at pursuing proactive self innovation by creating change rather than sitting back andmerely becoming followers of change. We are upscaling every element the university offers fromeducation, research, services to enhance cooperation between industry and academia in order tomeet international standards.

Beginning this year, we introduced the self certification system for majors, the first of its kind inKorea. We will also exert dedicated efforts to strengthen globalization of the university by forming aglobal network. Our vision is to have our students share knowledge with fellow youths around theworld and have our professors join hands with scholars overseas in the quest for knowledge.

Once again we have been overwhelmed with the success of our 2010 International School Program.Having now swelled by more than 250% since its inception, the international School Programs havegarnished partnerships with 40 universities and catered to over 200 students from abroad who feel agreat sense of accomplishment with the program. Many are enriched by the cultural experience andthey have developed a deep fondness for Korea and a desire to return in the near future. It is withpleasure that I extend an invitation for you to join our 2011 International Winter and SummerSchool Programs.

We look forward to the heartfelt support for Dankook University as it takes on this new challenge toreinvent itself on top of the foundation of nationhood to become the home of young globalintelligence.

COMMENTS

Leah Jurilla, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona“As a returnee, of course the experience cannot compare to my first time being here, however I took this as abrand new experience. I’ve met so many different types of people this time around and I was able to become morecomfortable with getting around Korea and using Korean language. This program offers so much and you gain somuch personally. Many people can recommend the program but it is just something people need to live andexperience.”

Kaylie Clendenon, California State University, Long Beach“I figured out how to keep students engaged and occupied, made friends from all over the world that I can now visit. Ihad to meet my students in Seoul and I found my way there alone quickly and efficiently? I learned how to use publictransport.”

Susan Hur, Montclair State University“I got teaching experience, which has helped me a lot in the way I have thought about my major (Family & Child Studies). In the English Village, I met a lot of Korean students who I have learned a lot from. I had to learn how to travel in Koreaby myself and utilize the Korean language.”

Sarah Nagel, Ferris State University“I thought that the Korean Art History class was fantastic. The teacher was always ready to go, nice and able toanswer questions. I loved the field trips to museums and palaces and places in the city. Going to the art field tripsand taking the art history class helped me learn more and learn how to write more efficiently on the topic of art.”

Alexander Long, George Mason University“In my Introduction to TESOL class I did my first presentation with very little preparation. I did my second and

third and fourth with a lot more preparation time because I learned how hard it was without it.”

Professor Lionel Mandy, California State University Long Beach“It has been my honor and pleasure to teach the international Business course as part of the Dankook University’s

International Summer Program. Dean Shim and his staff are to be congratulated for creating an outstanding program. The enthusiasm of the international students and the Dankook University students has surprised me to return to teach

in 2011. I am grateful; this program has been a gift for me.”

Cody Dulock, Wagner College“The cultural activities, specifically the weekend trips were very well organized and I enjoyed

them immensely. I enjoyed the wide selection of classes to choose from and the broaddemographics of the students that were in the program, I met many different types of

people from around the world. Generally the helpful nature from all staff and people Iinteracted with in dealing with the program made the program worthwhile.”

Jessica Corbeil, Grant MacEwan University“Being able to meet Korean people, experience their culture with them has been amazing! The different

ways of living are really cool to discover! I guess I have grown in becoming more culturally aware andsensitive to the people around me. This is towards students and locals! It’s been a lot of fun!”

Kyle Lucas, Ferris State University“I took a Korean language course while here. At the beginning of the trip I could not speak any Korean, read menus, etc.By the end of the program I felt confident going into a restaurant that I could at least order a few items”

Christopher Tucci, Manhattan College“Yesterday, after completing a final examination, I ran around campus trying to find cups for class. I used my new

knowledge of campus, the Korean culture and language, and other skills to find the cups. I even did it all in Korean.”

John Huang, California State University, Berkeley“The weekend trips to the famous locations was definitely memorable. The DMZ trip was very

eye opening for me because that location was something I only read about in books.”
