Come Lord Jesus! Turning Towards the Lord: Part 3

In this final installment, we conclude our examination of the history and theology regarding the Mass and how the Church – in her Tradition and current instructions on how the Mass is to be celebrated – calls us all to turn toward the Lord not only in our hearts, but in the direction we all face when worshiping God.

Turning Towards the Lord: Misconceptions and Clarifications Very early on Christians physically manifested their faith in the Lord’s twofold coming – His advent – by facing the East when praying, above all in the Mass. Priests and people desired – in prayer and in life – to always be turned together towards the Lord, “the sun of righteousness” (Malachai 4:2) who has come in the flesh, is risen from the dead, and will come again in glory.

Indeed, the 1970 Roman Missal promulgated by Blessed Paul VI retained this as the default posture of priest and people as it had been from at least the fourth century. The accompanying 1970 General Instruction of the Roman Missal (262), however, did permit the priest to face the people (versus populum, Latin meaning “towards the people”). The current Missal and General Instruction – promulgated by Saint John Paul II in 2002 – retain this discipline.

Priest and people together facing East during the Liturgy of the Eucharist physically manifests that the priest is acting in persona Christi Capitis – Latin meaning in the person of Christ the Head of His Body the Church. Priest and people together turned towards the Lord (ad orientem) during the Liturgy of the Eucharist embodies the reality that Christ – in the person of the priest – is the Head of the Church offering perfect praise and worship to the Father in the Holy Spirit and, as the Good Shepherd, leads the flock towards the new and heavenly Jerusalem. On the other hand, at those points of the Mass when the priest addresses not the heavenly Father but the people, he turns to face them. For example, after having prepared the offerings, the Roman Missal (29) instructs the priest: “Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people, extending and then joining his hands, he says: ‘Pray brethren.” It is clear, then, that lamenting that the priest is turning his back to the people or is facing the wall, betrays a complete misunderstanding of the symbolism of priest and people together turning towards the Lord.

One reason put forth for granting permission for the priest to face the people (versus populum) was to recover the meaning of the Mass not only as the Holy Sacrifice but also as a meal. However, already in 1967 Father Louis Bouyer – one of the theological experts assisting the bishops at the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) – had noted in his Liturgy and Architecture that “nothing . . . can be more foreign to any real meal than . . . the people . . . just standing before [the altar] table with the celebrant alone on the other side” (108). “Far from uniting the community focused on the altar” – Bouyer warned – “it will emphasize the separation and opposition between the clergy and laity; the altar will just become itself the most formidable barrier between two castes among Christians” (111). In

fact, in the ancient cultures of Rome and Israel, participants in a meal all reclined on the same side of the table while the other side remained open allowing for free access to those serving the meal. At the Last Supper, in other words, Jesus and the Apostles would all have been on the same side of the table, not looking across it at one another.

In 2000 then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger noted in his The Spirit of the Liturgy a consequence about which his friend Father Bouyer had warned already in 1967: “The turning of the priest toward the people has turned the community into a self-enclosed circle. In its outward form, it no longer opens out on what lies ahead and above, but is closed in on itself. The common turning toward the East was not a ‘celebration toward the wall’; it did not mean that the priest ‘had his back to the people’: the priest himself was not regarded as so important.

(Cardinal) Ratzinger emphasized the importance of distinguishing the two main elements of the Mass: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. “The Liturgy of the Word is about speaking and responding, and so a face-to-face exchange between the proclaimer and hearer does make sense . . . On the other hand, a common turning to the East during the Eucharistic Prayer remains essential. This is not a case of something accidental, but of what is essential. Looking at the priest has no importance. What matters is looking together at the Lord. It is not now a question of dialogue but of common worship, of setting off toward the One who is to come. What corresponds with the reality of what is happening is not the closed circle but the common movement forward, expressed in a common direction for prayer” (81).
