Round 1: Tues., Oct.6 | 7 p.m. ET | NBCSNRounds 2-7: Wed., Oct. 7 | 11:30 a.m. ET | NBCSN

The Washington Capitals hold five picks in the 2020 NHL Draft, which begins on Tuesday, Oct. 6 and will be televised on NBCSN at 7 p.m. ET. Rounds 2-7 will take place on Wednesday and will also be televised on NBCSN at 11:30 a.m. ET. Last year, the team made four selections, including forward Connor McMichael with the 25th overall selection. For more information on the 2020 NHL Draft, visit WashCaps.com/NHLDraft.

Homegrown – The Washington Capitals were one of 10 teams in the NHL this season to have at least 16 drafted players on their roster (Nicklas Backstrom, Travis Boyd, John Carlson, Christian Djoos, Martin Fehervary, Braden Holtby, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Tyler Lewington, Beck Malenstyn, Ilya Samsonov, Dmitry Orlov, Alex Ovechkin, Jonas Siegenthaler, Chandler Stephenson, Jakub Vrana and Tom Wilson). Capitals draftees accounted for 64.4% of the team’s goals, 63.9% of the team’s assists and 64.1% of the team’s points last season.

24 – The Capitals will be selecting 24th overall in the NHL Draft for the third time in franchise history. In team history, the Capitals used their 24th overall pick to select Marcus Johansson in 2009 and Errol Rausse in 1978. In the last 10 NHL Drafts, players selected 24th overall have played a combined 1,321 NHL games, with Philadelphia’s Kevin Hayes leading the way with 270 points (115g, 155a) in 450 career games.

Counting on Connor – Connor McMichael, Washington’s first-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, registered 102 points (47g, 55a) in 52 games with the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 2019-20. No player selected in 2019 NHL Draft averaged more points per game than McMichael (1.96). The 6’0”, 181-pound forward became the third Knights player selected in the first round of the NHL Draft to record at least 100 points in the season following their draft year since 2000, joining Mitch Marner (2015-16, 116 points) and Corey Perry (2003-04, 113 points). McMichael finished 34 points ahead of the next highest scoring forward on London (Liam Foudy: 68 points) this season. Internationally, McMichael also represented Canada in the 2020 World Junior Championship, recording seven points (5g, 2a) in seven games en route to winning a gold medal.

Early Returns from 2019 – In his first professional season, Brett Leason, the Capitals’ second-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, recorded 14 points (3g, 11a) in 50 games with the Hershey Bears in the AHL. Aliaksei Protas, the Capitals’ third-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, registered 80 points (31g, 49a) in 58 games with the Prince Albert Raiders in the Western Hockey League (WHL). Protas ranked ninth in the WHL in points and recorded the most points in the League by a European-born player. He became the third European player in Prince Albert’s history to record 80 points, joining Leon Draisaitl (2013-14: 105 points) and Milan Kraft (1998-99: 86 points). Martin Has, the Capitals’ fifth-round pick in 2019, began the 2019-20 season in Finland, primarily playing with KOOVEE, recording one goal and a +4 rating in 13 games. The 6’4”, 192-pound defenseman was then then traded from the North Bay Battalion to the Guelph Storm of the OHL. In 21 games in the OHL, Has recorded six assists. Internationally, Has represented the Czech Republic at the World Junior Championship, recording three points (1g, 2a) in five games.

Top of Their Class – The Capitals feature three players on their roster who lead their respective NHL Drafts in numerous categories. Alex Ovechkin ranks first among players drafted in 2004 in goals (706), points (1,278) and games played (1,152). Nicklas Backstrom ranks first among players drafted in 2006 in assists (684) and points (927). Braden Holtby ranks first among goaltenders drafted in 2008 in games played (468), wins (282) and save percentage (.916). Holtby was the 10th goaltender selected in the 2008 NHL Draft and has just 28 fewer career wins than the nine goaltenders drafted before him combined (310).

First for a Reason – Ten players who played for the Capitals in 2019-20 were drafted in the first round in their respective drafts (Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson, Lars Eller, Ilya Kovalchuk, Evgeny Kuznetsov, T.J. Oshie, Alex Ovechkin, Ilya Samsonov, Jakub Vrana and Tom Wilson).

Capitalizing on Selections – From 2002 to 2014, the Capitals have had 17 of their 20 first round draft picks play at least 150 games in the NHL, including each of their six first round picks from 2009 to 2014, despite having an average draft position of 19th overall during that span.

Quantity and Quality – Since 2006, 33 of Washington’s draft picks have appeared in at least one game for the Capitals and have combined to play in 6,543 games for Washington.

In the History Books – The Capitals 2004 NHL Draft class has combined to play in 2,736 NHL games (Alex Ovechkin: 1,152 games; Mike Green: 880; Jeff Schultz: 409; Sami Lepisto: 176; Andrew Gordon: 55; Chris Bourque: 51; Travis Morin: 13), ranking first in the NHL. In addition, Washington’s 2006 Draft class ranks third in games played (2,336 games; Nicklas Backstrom: 956 games; Mathieu Perreault: 627; Semyon Varlamov: 493; Michal Neuvirth: 257; Oskar Osala: 3). Washington’s 2009 Draft class ranks sixth in games played (1,760 games; Marcus Johansson: 648 games; Cody Eakin: 586; Dmitry Orlov: 516; Patrick Wey: 9; Garrett Mitchell: 1). Washington’s 2012 Draft class features seven players that have played in the NHL, one of eight draft classes since 2010 to feature that many players, and the only one from the 2012 class.

Homegrown Goaltending – Since 2006, the 1,418 combined regular-season games played by goaltenders drafted by the Capitals is the highest such total among all teams. During the last 10 seasons (2010-20), goaltenders drafted by Washington have accounted for 400 of the team’s 449 wins (89.1%). Braden Holtby (2008), who was drafted by the Capitals in the fourth round, has the most wins in the NHL over the last five seasons (2014-20: 222). In his rookie season, Ilya Samsonov (2015) became the first goaltender in franchise history to record 10 wins within his first 12 starts (10-2-1) and became the second goaltender in NHL history to win his first 10 road decisions. In the AHL with the Hershey Bears, goaltender Vitek Vanecek (2014) became one of two active goaltenders to participate in each of the last two AHL All-Star Classics, recorded the lowest goals against average (2.26) and the highest save percentage (.917) in a single season in his AHL career, ranking fifth and 10th, respectively, in the categories in the AHL.

European Union – The Capitals have drafted a player from Europe in 12 consecutive drafts and have drafted 27 European players during that span. Washington has drafted a European player in the first round 10 times in the last 14 drafts.

Down on the Farm – Washington’s AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears, featured 17 players in 2019-20 that were drafted by the Capitals.
