Hispanic Influence on California Architecture Spanish influenced architecture is one of the great Latino contributions to American culture, with millions of examples from Ca lifornia to Florida, bui lt by tens of millions of people, over the last 400 years.
This presentation focuses on how the Spanish/Hispanic/Latino architectural design vocabulary evolved over a thousand years and four continents, and how it has been employed in Pasadena. It examines numerous local examples, including the San Gabriel Mission, Castle Green, the Caltech campus, Pasadena Civic Center, 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival houses built by George Washington Smith, Wallace Neff, and many others, along with more recent Hispanic inflected projects such as the Del Mar Station.
Presented by Dave Nufer, program developer and docent with Pasadena Heritage and the Los Angeles Conservancy. The son of a Mid-Century Modern builder, he has previously given talks at the library on "The Asian Roots of Pasadena Arts and Crafts Architecture," and "200 Years of Black Pioneers in Pasadena and Los Angeles." The Honorable Gav in Newso m Governor of the State of Califo rnia State Capito l Building Sacramento, CA 95814

Re: SB 1207 Backup Power Systems in Skilled Nursing Facilities
Dear Governor Newsom:
T he City of Pasadena fu lly supports SB 1207 (Jackson) as passed by the Califo rn ia State Legislature. Residents in ski lled nursing facilities a re extrao rdinarily vulnerable and some rely on electric-powered life support systems to stay a live. There are growing dangers to Californ ia ' s most vulnerable population receiv ing care in skilled nursing faci lit ies inc lud ing wildfires, heat waves, rolling blacko uts, and the ever present risk of a damaging earthquake. Unsafe temperatures, unrefrigerated med ications, and med ica l devices w ithout power can have deadly consequences.
SB 1207 would require every ski lled nursing fac ili ty, including the 15 located in Pasadena, to have an a lternative source of power to protect resident healt h and safety for no less than 96 hours during any type of power outage. SB 1207 also requires compliance with a ll applicable federa l requirements for long-term care fac il it ies inc lud ing mainta ining a safe temperature fo r residents and staff.
In a November 20 19 report t it led California Should Improve Its Oversight of Selected Nursing Homes ' Compliance with Federal Requirements for L[fe Safety and Emergency Preparedness, the Un ited States Health and Human Services Office of Inspector Genera l (OIG) reported that Califo rnia nurs ing home residents are at increased risk of injury o r death during emergenc ies due to w idespread vio lations of crit ica l safety standards. The O IG visited 19 California nursing homes from September to December 2018. Nine of the 19 fac ilit ies did not meet the bas ic federal standards on emergency power t hat SB 1207 would cod ify.

The C ity of Pasadena supports SB 1207 and respectfully encourages yo u to sign the bill into law. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dr. YingYing Go h, Director of Public Health and Health Officer, City of Pasadena, at (626) 744-6046.
