SUMMER

Many of us come from the north, where Memorial Day marks the ‘of-ficial’ start of sum-mer: picnics, travel, v a c a t i o n , b e a c h days, and even at work, a slow-down o r e a s i e r p a c e .

Some are retired or work part-time, so there are even fewer demands.

!But this is Florida where warm weather comes much sooner and lasts longer. Some of us leave for part or much of the sum-mer, while others plan vacation time around school/work schedules. Paradoxi-cally, we spend more time indoors, espe-cially during the hot hours of mid-day.

!But, having lived in Florida for three years before returning to St. Augustine, I re-member the nice things about summer in Florida: the roads and highways are much less crowded; so are the hotels and restau-rants and local venues; friends and neigh-bors are away for days or weeks at a time, and there’s a calm to the local atmosphere.

Wherever we are, summer is a time to re-lax and refresh. Few synagogues schedule meetings, including auxiliaries like Youth or Sisterhood. Religious school does not resume until the end of August, and most rabbis take vacation during July and Au-gust.

!While Jewish life slows down, it does not stop. At Bet Yam, services continue. At-tend one and support your congregation. If you plan a trip out of town or out of the country, go on-line and discover a site of Jewish interest and plan a visit. Attending a Shabbat service in a different locale of-ten provides a new perspective. Include in your summer reading at least one Jewish novel, biography, or article.

!When we re-connect in September, I’ll want to ask, Where did you go, what did you do, and what did you learn of Jewish interest?

!Wishing you and yours a restful, peaceful, and healthy summer,

Rabbi Fred

NEWS FROM YOUR COMMITTEES

It’s hard to believe that my presidency has reached the one-year mark. This past year has been filled with so much that was new for all of us, but we have managed to handle the transition smoothly. Per-

haps it is this of which I am most proud. !The primary change came with the arrival of Rab-bi Fred. When you have a new Rabbi, the congre-gation must adjust to a new style. And that is true for the Rabbi, too, as he certainly took on a differ-ent kind of congregation. We do take a little get-ting used to. But as Rabbi Fred has said, “We tweak a little here and we tweak a little there,” and things have worked out in a most positive way. !When you have a new President, things also need a little tweaking. I am sure my style is different from those who have had this job before, but with the help of so many people, I have managed to get to this one-year mark with my sense of humor in-tact. Believe me when I say that being a temple President had not been on my bucket list. I admit, however, that I have enjoyed the interaction with the Board as I have with the entire congregation. When you are President, you do get to know peo-ple a little better. !

I want to thank the Board and those who worked on the various committees. I also want to thank those who volunteered or picked

up the slack when there was a need. Everyone was true to his/her word. All promises were kept. How can you not have a successful year under condi-tions like that! Here’s hoping that spirit of dedica-tion and cooperation continues forward. !Enjoy the summer!

LIFE LONG LEARNING Terri & Jeff Kamm

Thank you, thank you, and thank you to everyone who made this year’s Life Long Learn-ing programs so successful, either by participating in

our discussions or just coming to watch and listen (and maybe learn something along the way). A special thank you goes to Rabbi Fred, who led our spirited, lively, and thought-provoking discussions, while making sure all had an opportunity to partici-pate at whatever level they were comfortable.

After a request was received from a congregant to hold a program during the day, we had our first “Brown Bag Lunch with the Rabbi.” Rabbi Fred answered questions submitted from attendees prior to our lunch on various topics relating to Jewish issues, both historic and relevant in today’s world.

We are currently in the planning stages for next year’s Life Long Learning programs. Please let us know if there is a topic you would like to see cov-ered and we’ll do our best to make it happen. In order to allow participation from as many congre-gants as possible, next year will be a combination of evening and daytime programs.

Reminder:!Shabbat services will be held the first and second Friday nights this month, instead of the first and third.

Shofar columnists and the entire TBY Board of Trustees would like to wish all of you a most joyous and meaningful Passover season.

RITUAL Maury Keiser

Our changes in congregational participation in services are working well. For normal ser-vices there are nine opportunities for congregant participation. These include Kiddush, Candle Lighting, a Reading, the Military Prayer, Ark opening (two), Torah Handling (two) and Torah Blessing. We are trying to assure all get an opportunity to participate throughout the year. Either a designated Temple Elf or I will contact you prior to ser-vices to assign Honors. All assignments will be made by 10 minutes prior to the begin-ning of the service. If you have a special interest in participation for a specific service, please contact me the week before the service. !NOTE: The schedule of services for the next three months, as there is significant depar-ture from our normal routine:

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

Joan Guglielmo, Director, and Denise Mensh, Representative to the Board It is hard to believe another school year has come to an end! !

What a sweet spring we have had. In conjunction with learning the story of Purim, the students tried their hands in the kitchen

making gluten free hamantaschen. Yum! A special thank you to Megan Naughton for her culinary assistance! We had a wonder-ful family day at Religious School when the teachers prepared a

chocoholic’s dream for our Passover Seder, complete with a special hagadah, tootsie rolls, chocolate kisses, chocolate milk,

and of course, those chocolate strawberries! !Nature is always a component of our Religious education so the students once again lent a hand at the annual TBY clean-up. We celebrated Yom Ha’atsma’ut with Israeli foods, coloring the seal of Israel, and decorating planters (just in time for Mother’s Day!). !We feel so fortunate to have had so many volunteers spend a Sunday (or two, or three, or ten!) with us through-out the school year. Words can never express how much we appreciate all of the hours you spent helping to teach and to share your experiences with the students. !While we are losing Ms. Ashley next year as a full-time teacher, as she continues her higher educational pur-suits, we want her to know what a special place she holds in all of the hearts of the students, teachers, and fami-lies. We are so proud of all she has accomplished and send her off with wishes for a happy, fulfilling, and pros-perous journey.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Art Rogove On March 7th, in conjunction with our Purim celebration, we had a food drive for the Saint Francis House in Saint Augustine. Approximately 200 pounds of food was collect-ed. Thanks to Carol Gladstone and others on the Philanthropic team who helped on this project. On Saturday, April 6th, the TBY choir performed a special mitzvah by offering the gift of music to residents of River Garden and The Coves. A modified rendition of the Broad-way review previously performed by the choir was well received by the residents.

I am pleased to introduce Al Sibarium, who will be assuming the position of Social Justice Chair. !!

JUSTICE, JUSTICE 64

This June, the Saint Augustine Jewish Historical Society will present a two-day program to commemo-rate the 50th anniversary of the largest known arrest of rabbis during the civil right demonstrations in St. Augustine. Events will include a discussion by five of the surviving rabbis who will relate why they responded to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's request to join African Americans’ civil rights demonstra-tions.

We encourage our Temple family to offer their support for the efforts of the St. Augustine Jewish Histor-ical Society Justice, Justice 64 Committee to mark this historic event by bringing back to our community as many of the rabbis who were arrested here in June, 1964, as are willing and physically able to attend. The contact person is Joe Marx. Please contact him for additional information.

See the next page for a list of the events for both days. !!The Rabbi’s letter “Why We Came” can be found as a separate attachment with the Shofar. Please be sure to download it to read it in its entirety.

WAYS AND MEANS Andi Marx and Terre Wallach

2013-2014 has been a very successful year for our Ways and Means events. We have tried to provide a diversified program that reaches out to all congre-gants, young and less young alike.

We have sponsored large events like the Choir's Broadway Review, The Card Party and Brunch, Gift Wrapping at Barnes & Noble, An Evening at the Limelight, and our traditional Deli Nite. We also have hosted more reasonable and family ori-ented events like an afternoon at the bowling alley, the Spaghetti Dinner, The Maida Concert, the Rock N Roll party, and one or two Hard Lox Cafes.

On Tuesday, May 20th, we sponsored a casino cruise out of Port Canaveral. It was a sunny day at sea and those of us who attended enjoyed all the advantages of the ship plus great TBY camaraderie.

On August 10th (just one week before school resumes), we have planned another afternoon of bowling at The Anastasia Bowling Lanes. Please "Save the Date" and look for future email notices.

"Thank You" to all for supporting our events and making their success possible.

Remember that great Rock’n’Roll party?…

TEMPLE BET YAM CEMETERY Temple Bet Yam recently consecrated a portion of The Craig Memorial Park on Old Moultrie Road in St. Augustine as sacred burial ground in the philosophy and theology of Reform Judaism. This portion is dedicated to Temple Bet Yam, and all Temple members are eligible to purchase burial plots in the TBY section of Memorial Park. Members may purchase burial plots for them-

selves, their spouses, their partners, their children, and/or their parents. Following Reform Jewish philoso-phy, there are no restrictions concerning burial of non-Jewish spouses or partners adjacent to their loved ones. !Those interested in purchasing burial plots as part of their preplanning should contact C. J. Kidd at Craig Memorial Park directly (904-824-1672). The current cost of a burial plot is $1800 and includes perpetual care. ! For further information or questions, contact Marty Cohen.

It is with great sadness that we report the death of

Elinor Silverman who passed away on May 20, 2014

!Elinor, a long-time member of TBY

living at River Garden for the past few years, was a lively person who contributed in many

ways to our Temple family and the community. !

She will be buried next to her husband David

in Massachusetts. !

Our love, thoughts, and prayers are with the entire Silverman family

CONTRIBUTIONS

The custom of making offerings/do-nations as an expression of prayer traces back to Biblical times and has always been a practice of congrega-tions. A donation can be defined as an act of prayer in which the partici-pant extends himself or herself be-yond the act of uttering words. It ex-

ceeds mere vocal expression and indicates that an act of personal sacrifice has been performed by the donor. The amount of an offering is less important than the deed. A small offering made by a person of limited income is as noble in nature as a larger one given by a person of wealth. THE WORLD IS SUS-TAINED BY THREE THINGS: BY TORAH, BY WORSHIP, AND BY TZEDAKAH.

Trees for Israel Toby Weintraub

We are enjoying huge success with our Trees for Israel. Every tree pur-chased is not only recognition of some significant event in your life or in the life of someone close to you but is also a mitzvah for Israel and contributes to our Temple

fundraising effort. Please use this very important program as a memorial to a friend or loved one or in celebration of a happy occasion for someone dear to you.

Beineinu Congregants helping Congregants !

The MURRAY WEISS MEMORIAL FUND is a new fund for members of our congregation to help members in need. In order to spearhead this fund, the Murray Weiss Trust will match your dollars until the fund’s goal is reached. !Helping our fellow congregants is the mission of this fund. Its success will be determined by the congregation. It will be a real Mitzvah to know that your dollars were spent on someone who was in need of help for tuition, or medicine, or food, or hurricane damage, or hospital care, or anything else that is needed. !This fund was created for Temple Bet Yam so that it may continue to bring caring and as-sistance to those in need. Anyone wishing to ap-ply to the fund should get an application from the front office or contact a member of the fund-ing committee (Karen Selig, Stu Soroka, or me). !Shalom, Mimi Selig

At the annual congregational meeting on May 18th, three new funds available for member con-tributions were approved. A brief explanation fol-lows. The funds were fully defined in the infor-mation sent to all congregants 30 days before the meeting. 1. Education Tuition Reserve Fund to provide

tuition assistance to Temple members who want to give their children a Jewish education,

2. Religious School Reserve Fund to pay for programs and activities for the religious school, and

3. Torah Fund designated for the repair and re-placement of the Temple’s Torahs.

EDITOR’S NOTES Bev Darkatsh

I owe a big debt of gratitude to the sharp eyes and grammatical acumen of my three copy-editor elves, Nancy Sorkin, Jackie Witte, and Hannah Standiford. Hannah will be departing as editorial elf in order to pursue her graduate studies. We will miss her greatly, but wish her well in her new endeavors. !We’d like to thank you for making the decision to take the Shofar on line instead of being mailed a print version. It’s one of the privileges of mem-bership to receive it this way and also part of the process of the Temple going green -- better for ecology, saves trees and energy. It’s also better for

the Temple in that it saves us the cost of paper and postage. You can still print it out yourself if you’d prefer to read it that way -- I do. !In order to become self-supporting, the Shofar is in need of additional advertisers. Please submit the names of the businesses you frequent and the professionals you use so that we can contact them as potential advertisers. You do not have to contact them personally; our Shofar advertising lady, Jen Sherman, will do it. All referrals will remain anonymous. Please contact Jen.

!!

!!!!!!!Please refer to the web site at templebetyam.org for dates of future services and other events

throughout the year.!!Note also that Child Care is now offered during regular Shabbat services unless otherwise announced.

Dorothy Dearth, a preschool teacher at Village Academy, is the caregiver. There is no additional cost to parents. Please see Denise Mensh for additional information. !We look forward to seeing all of you at our Shabbat and High Holy Day services.
