    PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Another year gone, and another opportunity to share with our wider community the many achievements of 2019. Once again, we have:

    • Conducted hockey fixture competitions for juniors, seniors and masters, at five turf venues and two grass venues, for over 3,300 registered players. Player numbers have again remained static in both junior and senior divisions, but with a noticeable decrease in U7 Rookies. We need to put some significant effort into understanding the how and why of this decrease and identify ways to address in the coming year.

    • Sent 19 teams to compete at State Championships for Super League, U18, U15, U13 and Masters, as well as 4 teams competing in the U11 Southern Cross at Downey Park. The ability of these teams is evident in that top two placings were achieved in nine of the fifteen divisions.

    • Continued with the practice of asking clubs to nominate the senior turf divisions they wish to play in, as well as not setting a limit on the number of dual registered players in a club. This has seen two clubs, South West United and QUT, fielding combined teams in the Division 1 and 2 divisions to enable them to retain players in these divisions. Whilst first year success on the field was limited, it has enabled both clubs to provide a pathway to top grade divisions for their developing players.

We have established a sixth division for senior turf to accommodate club requests, on the expectation that the extra turf at Burringbar would become available during the season to accommodate the increase in teams. Whilst the second turf was not completed in time for games to be played there, it will be ready for 2020. We continue to work with Brisbane Hockey Association (BHA) to administer Hockey Brisbane Inc, and with BHA and Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club (KWSHC) to administer the Brisbane Hockey Management Group (BHMG), which manages the Burringbar turf facility. The second turf has been completed and the remaining grass field remediated. Work is now underway to construct the technical bench and dugouts thanks to a State Government facility grant. Much effort continues with pursuing council approval to construct a turf field at Downey Park, with an expectation that we may be able to proceed to a pre-DA meeting in the near future. Work is underway to construct an amenities block on Field 10 thanks to the award of $500,000 from the State Government Female Facility Grants (noting we are still working through issues raised by Brisbane City Council that has stalled this project). I would like to thank all the members of my board for their commitment, enthusiasm and good humour during the year. To all the dedicated volunteers at club and association level – thank you, because without you we would not be able to exist. And last but certainly not least, my sincere thanks to Kath Proctor and all the BWHA staff for their ongoing support and tremendous work effort. Dr Karin Walduck

    Vale Meg Brodie

Meg first played hockey in Scotland age 8 and after moving to Australia played for Banyo

High and was hockey captain. She then played club hockey for Valley and then University

from 1963 to 1966. After having a family, she returned to hockey as a coach at Valley.

In 1991 she returned to University and became Women’s President in 1993, holding the

position until 2014 when the women’s and men’s clubs amalgamated.

Meg was awarded Life Membership of BWHA in 2014 and was a familiar face at Downey

Park for many years, working tirelessly around the grounds and facilities. Meg was BWHA

President for 2 years and on the Board of Management for 16 years. Meg held countless

positions in BWHA and the University of Queensland Hockey Club.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT Obtaining development approval for a synthetic surface at Downey Park continues to be a

challenge. We are still working with Council to obtain the necessary approvals.

    GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

The 2018 Board of Management held 4 planning meetings in October and November 2018 to

consider the rules and procedures identified during the season. We asked the clubs for their

input through a questionnaire, the responses were used to make changes to rules and

    processes for 2019.

The 85th Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday 27th November 2018. Awards

recognising the valuable role volunteers play in our association were given out with special

mention to our Senior Volunteer of the Year Liz Lobb (Fixture, Umpire Mentoring & Coaching)

and Junior Volunteer of the Year Alyson Aleksic (Junior Committee and Junior Umpire

Development). The Management Committee remained constant with 8 members from across

    7 clubs.

The Management Committee met in December 2018 to appoint convenors to committees. A

small Christmas party was held just prior to Christmas for Staff, Management and Life

Members at the BWHA Clubhouse, where we farewelled Sue Barsby from our employment.

We continue to work to spend the grant we received from the Department of Sport and

Recreation for a new Female Facility near field 10 at Downey Park. We have been required to

ensure our project meets with BCC requirements on flooding, contaminated land, and

heritage. To date we are still trying to get past the BCC Heritage requirements. This facility is

so desperately needed not only by our own members, but the Softball members and the many

schools and community groups that use the facility. Hopefully, we will finally get through the

difficulties that the BCC has put in our way and we can get the facility built in time for the

2020 season. Thank you to John Giles from John Giles and Associates for his project

management to date. We also received funding from the Community Gambling Benefit Fund

for a Toro Utility Vehicle to replace one of our old golf buggies, the utility vehicle is better

suited to assist with grounds maintenance tasks, a boom spray and a foam weed marker. We

also receive funds from the Queensland Department of Sport for Umpire Equipment and

Mentoring and the Australia Federal Government Volunteer program to upskill umpires and

technical officials, this was very welcome and used well during the season. Thank you to all

who assisted with these grant applications and thank you to the government departments

who make the funds available to assist not for profit groups like ours, without this funding

    many projects could not happen.

Hockey Brisbane Inc. an association to manage the activities BHA & BWHA do together met

bi-monthly in 2019. We continue to explore areas that we work together in and what we can

do better to improve the hockey experience of all in Brisbane. We will be meeting in the near

future to look at the use of the available turfs in Brisbane and the shared usage of them. A

small group of interested members from BHA & BWHA also meet on a number of occasions

to look at what can be done better in the Social media and communications area, Bron Morris

has worked hard to make this happen.

  • 11

Our first Council meeting for the calendar year was on the 5th February 2019, later than

normal due to the fall of the Australia Day public holiday. The following was discussed:

    • FIH – the new Hockey Pro-League being played around the world.

    • BWHA Life Member Noala Gordon OAM – recognised in the Australia Day Awards, for

her outstanding contribution as a pioneer female police women in Queensland, her

state & national hockey career, and her volunteer work for BWHA.

    • BHMG – installation of a second hybrid turf at the facility.

    • New FIH rules and their place in the BWHA competitions.

    • Providing information and important dates to get the season on the way.

    • Development opportunities available during the year.

    • New staff, retiring staff and staff taking Long Service.

The Junior Committee changed with two new members and Tash Gaddes stepping down,

thanks Tash for all your work with the Juniors. Judy Hartnett took over as the Convenor of this

committee and welcomed new members Gail and Kylie, to our continuing committee

members Lynne, Rebecca, Maree, Judy & Alyson. This is a large section of our association and

many decisions need to be made, this year they again worked hard in the area of umpire

development. Thank you all for your hard work and good humour in working through this

demanding area of our association. It would be great to see more people on this committee

to ensure our juniors continue to develop and grow. Parent behaviour is still a problem at all

venues and we ask all clubs to work to ensure their members behave in an appropriate

    manner at all Junior games.

It was wonderful not to conduct a Judiciary again this year, but a number of people had to be

spoken to about their behaviour especially on Saturday morning by our “Pink Vest” Duty

Supervisors. We changed our rules in regard to Warning Card accumulation of points which

resulted in no automatic one-week suspension for an accumulation of 12 points this year.

The affiliations for the Senior Turf teams were submitted at the end of 2018, this provided

for 6 divisions on turf, however when confirmation was requested in February 2019, a number

of clubs withdrew teams and then others added teams, this caused a major reshuffle, but we

    retained the 6 divisions with 10 team in D4 & 5 and 6 teams in D6. In Division 1 & 2 we saw

combined QUT & South West United teams take the field, this allowed both clubs to have the

opportunity to cement a pathway for their players. We also wanted to equalise the divisions

on Downey Park Grass so all divisions had at least 8 teams in them. We moved towards this

in 2019 and clubs have been advised that we will be looking to have 4 divisions of up to 10

teams in 2020, this will allow all divisions to have a full finals series. The Monday Masters

continued with 4 divisions playing every Monday night, unfortunately one team withdrew

from MM1 part way through the season. We also had our timeslots changed by Hockey

Queensland (SHC), which meant we had 2 very late games on a Monday night at that venue

  • 12

and no early game, this was not well received and we are working hard to ensure this does

not occur again in 2020. Our volunteer grading & fixture committees work really hard to get

the best outcome for all players, they have been listening more than ever to clubs and their

suggestions, thanks Di Brodie, Lesley Bennett and Kellie Roberts and your many committees

and members for being so accommodating and thorough in this important task. Thank you to

Kat Austen and Carol Chiu Chong for your support of our volunteers in this area.

The IMG Sportingpulse database continued to cause us issues with its limitations and inability

to provide reports to support our rules. We were promised a better competitions platform,

which did not eventuate so we were left using a new membership platform, with the old

competition platform. This was difficult to say the least, with the system unable to

accommodate one club until the end of the season. The office staff raced to get this clubs’

statistics into the system once if was fixed by the Database Operators/Hockey Australia. At

the time of writing this report Hockey Australia is again looking to change databases to Rev

Sport, until we can determine its suitability, the database we use in 2020 is still up in the air.

Thank you to Bron Morris & Kat Austen who have worked hard in this space to make

    improvements for us.

Umpiring continues to be a major issue in our sport as we struggle to work out how to

encourage more people to take on this role and also, how do we reward and protect them.

This year we had Amy Ryan & Kat Austen in the office looking after the co-ordination of

umpire accreditation, Amy also attended the Umpires & Technical Committee meetings. The

Umpires & Technical Committee work to increase the quality and quantity of umpires and

technical officials in our association as well as look at rules, equipment and uniforms. Sonya

Fisher has many hats in the association, Treasurer, briZHockey Liaison Officer, Grants Officer

and Umpire & Technical Committee Convenor and with her committee, invested many hours

developing umpires and technical officials. We had two grants this year, that not only supplied

equipment and education funds, but also allow tech officials to be sent to tournaments for

accreditation. With so many turf fixtures at so many venues it is a difficult task covering all

game with Technical Officials & Umpires, thanks to Jenny Heron, Lisa Donaldson, Judy

Hartnett, Lesley Bennett for achieving this, this year.

Once the fixtures are completed, the umpires and technical officials appointed, the Match

Secretaries have the difficult job of ensuring all players are playing within our rules. It is

challenging with over 3500 members in 4 competitions across hundreds of teams. We rely

heavily on club volunteers to do the correct thing, but our Match Secretaries eagle eyes are

still required. Thank you to Lesley Bennett, Christine Blanchard, Sue Reid & the Junior

Committee, and in particular Rebecca Horne for looking after our competitions, we live in

hope that eventually we will have a database that alleviates all the manual work.

Casual staff members Noala Gordon and John Robinson do an enormous amount of work all

year round to have our grass fields ready for competition. As large inner city parks, open to

the public, it is a challenge to keep football boots from ripping up the fields, dogs from leaving

  • 13

their manure on the fields, if you can think of it, it has probably happened at Downey or Rasey

Parks - well done and thanks to Noala & John on a job well done. Work on the park never

stops and we appreciate the cooperation with Downey Park Netball and Brisbane Softball –

we all love the park and work hard to look after it. Parking continues to be a major issue at

the park and we discuss this with the BCC at every opportunity. Christine Blanchard is still

working on the “Turf at Downey Park” project; she should be commended on her

perseverance and dedication. We also thank all clubs who enthusiastically assist and complete

their working bee tasks – every job performed is money saved on fees. We unfortunately had

3 break ins in 10 days at Rasey Park, Thanks John and Lisa for looking after this on the

weekends, extra security measures are being undertaken.

Following many special requests from clubs to fill their teams goal keeping needs, at the

March Council Meeting we had a discussion on Goal Keepers. At this meeting clubs discussed

ideas and suggestions to increase the number of people willing to take on this very important

role. One initiative that was adopted and received very well, was the ability to have a Goal

Keeper mentor stand near a learner goal keeper to teach and support them. To identify this

person BWHA bought a number of vests to be worn so they could be identified and allowed

in this area. We hope this will encourage more people to take on this challenging and

    rewarding position in the future.

The grass fixtures commenced in April and the park was full every Saturday catering for every

level and age in our sport – well done to all who played, officiated or supported in 2019. Our

player numbers plateaued this year, with turf team numbers growing, but we still have a great

need for our grass fields from U7 to 70+ age groups. We had more Casual 5 and 10 players

and many playing 2 or more competitions. We continued with some men’s games at Downey

Park and women’s grass games went to Finsbury Pk and the Dorrington Pk – everyone seems

to enjoy this. This promotes the sport as a whole of life and family sport – the whole family

can participate for the whole of their lives. Hockey Players need to better promote our sport

to the outside world if we want to compete in this competitive recreation market.

May/June is very busy in BWHA with many teams trialling and then competing at State

Championships, development programs run and all fixtures being played. We developed,

trialled, selected, trained and toured 23 representative teams this year. What a major

workload for our staff and volunteers. Thank you to all involved, our results were outstanding

this year, the results and statistics are later in this report. Thank you to Amy, Kathryn and

Carol for all your hard work, to all selectors, coaches, manager and umpires, you are all vital

to make this happen for our players – well done. We also continued to offer development

opportunities for goal keepers, masters and grass level players, all were very well supported,

thank you to the coaches for their time and expertise. This year saw Regie Fisher take Long

Service Leave and Leave without pay for ¾ of the year, so a heavy workload fell to Amy Ryan

and the office staff – well done on an outstanding effort.

  • 14

June also saw BWHA Life member Adell Parkyn receive an AM on the Queen’s Birthday

Honours list for her outstanding volunteer work as a Regional, State & National Selector for

many years, and her many other varied and important roles. Well done and congratulations

Dell. BWHA can be very proud of our many Honours recipients. Two recipients in one year !

The July Council meeting provided a forum for clubs to discuss and determine BWHA’s

direction for the future on a number of items from Dual Registrations to match playing time.

These discussions provide a purpose for our Council meetings and also allow all club voices to

be heard, and be part of the decision-making process.

BWHA retained a small recording foot print in 2019. With Hockey Australia owning the licence

to the word “HockeyZone”, we looked for a new name and then trade-marked it to protect it

in the future, so our new name briZHockey was born. Thank you to Sue Andersen for her

assistance with registering the Trade Mark. Thank you also to Paul Mills for his continuing

excellence in production. One game a week was filmed and streamed, thank you to the

commentators and production crew for all your hard work

    Thank you to our Downey Park staff: Canteen – Abby & Jeremy; Bar – Jess; Admin – Lorraine;

Time Stewards Chang/Shona; Rookie – Jess, First Aid – Konnie, Ryan, Hala, Peter & Chris; the

Saturday grass fixtures could not run as smoothly without you. A special thanks to Volunteer

Bruce Carroll who assists every week at Downey Park, opening and closing the facility and any

other jobs asked of him. It was very different not having John Thomas at Downey Park every

week this year, thank you to Lisa for ensuring we had coverage every week.

Only 4 Council Meetings were held in 2019, one after the AGM and one at the start of the new

season, with two discussion meetings held in March and July. Clubs were sent Management

Reports after every stand-alone Management Meeting to keep them abreast of all issues as

they happen. Thank you to all club delegates for giving up your time to attend meetings.

Management generally meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month, so club queries can be

dealt with in a timely manner, this resulted in our Board meeting 22 times this year to deal

with the business of our sport as well as numerous email discussions and decisions. They are

truly an amazing group of people, working tirelessly for our sport.

The Archive Committee continued to source photos of all Brisbane based Australian Player to

hang in the clubhouse, we now have 20 framed photos. Thank you to our Archive Committee,

Life Members and long-term supporters for continuing to work for BWHA, documenting the

important history we have and organising social events. Special thanks to Ronda, Jenny,

Tracey & Sue and Keith Nix for hanging the photos and memorabilia.

Early this year BWHA Life Member Meg Brodie passed away after a relatively short but

determined battle against MND, it was wonderful that she saw her beloved UQHC win its first

Division 1 title in 2018. Our sincere condolences to all our members who have suffered loss

this year or are facing challenges in life, and we congratulate those who have experienced

  • 15

great joy and exciting events. We share in the highs and lows of life with our friends and

    colleagues in hockey.

Thank you to the many volunteers that support our sport, especially to our President Dr Karin

Walduck, she is an outstanding volunteer, mentor and leader and we are very lucky to have

her. Thank you to the staff members casual, part-time and full time who all provide a great

service to our sport. Thank you to the government departments and sponsors who allow us

to grow and develop with support, both financial and in-kind.

    TREASURER’S REPORT

Thanks again to Kath and the team who support her in the BWHA office, they do an amazing job in keeping our bills paid, income followed up and the books kept up to date. The full audited Financial Statements for the year ending 30 Sept 2019 are at the end of this annual report. Overall our financial position remained stable

    • Revenue was approx. $1.4m

    • Net profit was $31k

    • Turf hire fees were $290k (21% of our total expenses) in line with previous years. This is a key reason why BWHA is continuing our push for a turf at Downey Park

    • We received income from grants of $63k and we are still working with BCC in respect to approvals for the replacement toilet block for Field 10 (so we can expend and acquit outstanding grant monies)

To continue to be successful with our grant applications, both existing and proposed, and to ensure we are heard by all levels of Government, we have continued to work with and inform our political representatives including:

    • BCC – Cr Andrew Wines (Downey Park) and the Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner

    • State – Hon Tim Nicholls MP

    • Federal – Hon Trevor Evans MP We have also engaged with the new CEO of Hockey Queensland, our State Sporting Organisation (SSO), in respect to our long-held aspirations for a turf at Downey Park. We have received support from all the above during the 18/19 FY and we are grateful for their ongoing support. Sonya Fisher Treasurer

BRIZHOCKEY REPORT (previously known as Hockey Zone) 2019

In late 2018, BWHA decided we would proceed with the re-named briZHockey in 2019 (noting BHA decided to not partner with us). We had to re-name because up until 2018, we had been using the Hockey Zone name with Hockey Australia’s approval (HA had trademarked the name). Unfortunately, HA did not provide approval for us to continue using “Hockey Zone” so we had to come up with a new name. We also couldn’t use “Brisbane Hockey” because that is what BHA and BWHA use for joint promotion / activities. Paul Mils and his amazing team (including family / volunteers / workers) did a great job to again showcase the high-level nature of the BWHA Division 1 competition – where many of the 2019 Brisbane Blaze players took the field on a weekly basis. We were also lucky to retain Bart Mellish MP (Aspley) and Joan Pease MP (Lytton) as the sponsors of our Division 1 competition and we thank them both for their continued support.

In 2019 we welcomed Aleisha Neumann (appointed as an umpire for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics) as a new Rules Guru present and in conjunction with Tara Leonard (who umpired the 2019 Hockey One women’s final), three segments were done – thanks ladies:

    • Penalty corner - attacking breach

    • Penalty corner - removing protective equipment

    • What is a back stick shot?

BWHA has committed to briZHockey in 2020 and we look forward to bringing you more of the sport we all love. If anyone knows of companies and / or organisations who would like to partner with us in 2020, please send the details to the BWHA office – thanks! Congrats also to Paul and his team, including commentators Peter Smith and Tom Whetton, for their coverage of the Oceanic Cup and Olympic Qualifiers in Rockhampton in August 2019 – great job (again)!! DATABASE & SOCIAL MEDIA BWHA has worked with BHA to present a more consolidated social media presence in 2019

by sharing information across our BWHA, BHA & Brisbane Hockey Facebook accounts &

    webpages.

BWHA have also continued using Instagram to inform & promote our activities to a broader

social media base. Thanks to Amy for her assistance with this.

The National Database as provided from HA & Sports TG has proven to be problematic again

in 2019. The updated system was rolled out with minimal time for exposure prior to season

commencement and whilst the Member Registration component provided basic functionality,

the Competitions platform as initially promoted by Sports TG failed to materialise. A

substantial component of the BWHA office time was expended either dealing with shortfalls

in the Membership module or working around the lack of effective Competitions platform. I

would like to thank Kathryn & Carol for their persistence & perseverance with what has been

an extremely challenging & frustrating system & also thank Clubs & players for their

understanding with the delays in rectifying issues.

HA now has contracted Revolutionise Sport to provide the National Database for 2020. BWHA

are currently working with Hockey NSW & some of their affiliated Associations to evaluate

the new system’s functionality as it would be applied to the BWHA competition, before

determining how it will be implemented next season. This is a high urgency activity with an

implementation decision being a BWHA management priority. Again, we thank Clubs for their

patience with yet another administrative transition at a late stage in the off season.

COMPETITIONS PORTFOLIO REPORTS COMPETITIONS: FIXTURES & GRADING

    TURF

At the beginning of the season we had the normal team movements as Clubs finalised their

teams and player numbers. Clubs affiliated a total of 59 senior turf teams over Saturday &

Sunday’s. A momentous year as it has been 13 years since BWHA has expanded its turf

competition, and in 2019 we added Division 6. The last time a Division was added to the

Women’s competition was in 2006 when Division 5 was added.

The pursuit of more even competitions continued in 2019 and we are still seeing a few large

results across the divisions but we seem to be seeing less and the fixture committee are having

to wait until the last week of normal fixtures before being able to finalise finals fixtures, which

indicates we are creating competitive and more energetic Divisions.

We will continue with our collaborative approach with BHA surrounding fixtures, including

home & away games which gives our Clubs the opportunity to have Club Days, something that

seems to be appreciated by the majority of Clubs. The second Burringbar turf will be online

in 2020 so this will hopefully give the fixture committee the opportunity to have more Club

    days.

We had some changes to our Grand final days in 2019 and we hope to build on these for

future years. It is important to celebrate the season not just for those Clubs participating but

also for all of our Clubs who have worked hard throughout the season.

Thanks to all the staff in the BWHA office and I must make special mention of Kathryn Austen

who works tirelessly for our Competition and is remarkable. And to the turf committee Jen

Heron & Liz Lobb who work hard all season, thank you for your commitment.

And finally, a huge thank you to our Clubs, the players and their volunteers – without you all

we don’t have our competition – so thank you for your ongoing hard work for our sport.

    Di Brodie

    GRASS

Thank you to the players and umpires at Downey Park who helped make 2019 another

successful season. It was pleasing to see a mix of clubs presenting for the grand finals in each

of the five grass divisions and different clubs winning each premiership.

The grass grading committee of Joan Walker, Sarah Sheppard and Lesley Bennett had some

tough decisions this year, building up DP1 and DP2, when fewer clubs nominated for both

these divisions. With only 38 teams affiliating this year and no club with more than four teams,

the grading committee discussed having only four divisions instead of the usual five. This

  • 19

would have been a huge step for some clubs to cope with, so 2019 was a transition year,

building DP2 to ten teams as the first step to introducing a ten-team competition for DP1 in

2020. Many clubs had no confidence in their teams’ ability to rise to the challenge and be

competitive in a higher division. The perception of competitiveness obviously varies between

clubs, as several teams were highly competitive in their new divisions. In 2020 there will only

be four grass divisions if there are 40 teams or less playing, meaning DP4 will be the lowest

division. All teams need to be prepared for a major reshuffle of divisions next year.

The Fixtures Committee, consisting of Margie Brown, Sarah Sheppard and Lesley Bennett,

were grateful that the grounds staff Noala Gordon and John Robinson were able to keep the

fields in good condition, despite the really dry season. There were a few problems with

fixtures during the season when determining which games would be played at the home

grounds when combined the men’s fixtures. In 2020 these fixtures need to be better co-

ordinated so that clubs are not disadvantaged when playing away and also with teams at

Downey Park. Fixture rounds were also re-organised to allow all divisions to start fixtures on

the same day and for some divisions to have the State Masters Championship weekend free

    of fixtures.

    Lesley Bennett

    MASTERS

During this year I served on the Grading committee and the Fixtures team. While I have

nothing of great significance to report, I do have the following recommendations:

I have developed a plan for the fixtures to attempt to share equally the starting time slots between teams, as well as make considerations for the teams travelling farthest to their games. Since there is little variation each year for the number of teams and the clubs entered, the rosters can be carried over and each team advances one position on the fixtures roster every subsequent year. Time slots left available by the Hockey Centre QLD added difficulty and was not to our advantage, so unfortunately half of our Masters games were allocated to a late timeslot. The grading committee again ran smoothly with most teams playing where they were best suited.

I would like to be more involved and feel I can be of greater use to the BWHA committee

should any positions become available to be filled.

    UMPIRE & TECHNICAL

2019 saw the committee, with the assistance of many volunteers and BWHA’s MDM and RDO, continue to develop Umpires and Technical. This is because our key focus is to continually improve the standard of officiating on BWHA Fixtures and through our representative umpires and technical personnel, assist to deliver great Hockey Queensland and Hockey Australia championships. BWHA Members should be proud of the contributions that our Umpires and Technical Officials make to delivering great outcomes for hockey; with many BWHA Umpires and Techs involved in the inaugural Hockey One competition. However, what has become more evident over recent years, is that a lot of clubs are not actively developing Umpires and / or Technical Officials. This results in a few bearing the load for many – which is not sustainable. So, in 2020 we will be working with Club Administrators to ensure they have someone responsible in their club for Umpire and Technical development. BWHA will provide access to both courses and people to help you – you just need to ask. Umpire Development Amy Ryan can arrange for someone to attend any umpiring sessions that clubs want to hold – whether it be with Junior teams, Parents or Senior Turf, Grass or Masters’ teams. These sessions can help remove some of the anxiety that new or evolving umpires face. We all umpired our first match at some point – so we know what it is like. But we absolutely need more players to put their hands up to have a go!! So maybe your New Year’s challenge to yourself could be to pick up a whistle in 2020 and for more than one game. Technical Development We will be running three Level 0 Technical Courses in March 2020 for anyone who wants to learn the basics (including Masters’ teams who have to supply someone to help with tech duties). It isn’t hard and can be very enjoyable especially as you get to sit in the best seat at the grounds!! – so please think about sending someone from your Club to one of the three courses. Details will be on the BWHA website. Sonya Fisher

    TURF UMPIRES’ STEWARD’S REPORT

The 2019 season started early in March, and it has become the norm in modern hockey that

there are many tournaments and events that interrupt our fixtures throughout the year. We

again had an outstanding group of Level 3 & 2 umpires officiating on our fixtures, many who

travel from throughout the South East Corner of Queensland to officiate on higher level

fixtures and receive outstanding mentoring, but who also provide our teams with arguably

the best umpiring at an association level in Australia.

  • 21

We were fortunate to gain funding from the Get Playing, State Sport and Recreation Grants

to develop, train and assess umpires in 2020. Kathryn Austen (BWHA Development

Administration) and Amy Ryan (BWHA RDO) worked hard to get as many umpires as possible

assessed on Turf matches, something that is not easy, co-ordinating the limited coaches with

so many venues and times. Thank you to all mentors and coaches for assisting in developing

the next group of umpires. In particular, we are very thankful for the continued support of Jan

Hadfield AM and Lyn Hill for their tireless work in developing umpires for our sport. This year

at the top level we had 2 Umpires receive Australian (L3) badges; 2 gain Level 2; 1 Level 1

Advanced, and 4 Level 1 and well as numerous Community Advanced & Community badges,

    congratulations and well done everyone.

While some clubs have worked tirelessly to upgrade their umpires, others still leave it to

everyone else to deal with. This is not sustainable and clubs need to ensure they give the same

resources to umpire development as they do to player and coach development. If you don’t

want inexperienced umpires on your game, then don’t put inexperienced umpires on your

register without ensuring you have a mentoring system in place to support them.

To those clubs who have been working hard to increase the ability and number of umpires

they have, thank you for your efforts, the more umpires you can develop the easier it is to

encourage people to become umpires, sharing the load around ensures people appreciate

that umpiring is not easy and all people who take up a whistle should be thanked not criticised.

If your club needs some assistance contact Amy or Kathryn in the BWHA office and they will

be able to give some practical assistance so your club can establish an umpiring program.

Thank you to all that have umpired this year, for without you there is no game, I hope you all

come back next year ready for the fun, enjoyment and challenge of umpiring.

    Kath Proctor

    GRASS UMPIRES’ STEWARD’S REPORT

Downey Park hosted 36 senior grass hockey teams each Saturday this season (out of a

competition of 38 teams with 2 byes) requiring 36 umpires to be allocated each week to these

games. Most of the umpires who officiate on games at Downey Park on Saturdays are

‘regulars’ who umpire every week or every second /third week. These regulars are

experienced umpires and to ensure all divisions had their share of the experienced umpires

their allocations were shared across divisions.

There was an increase in the number of umpire ‘no shows’ for their allocations this year.

Umpires/players around the park were able to step in to cover these games so no game went

without an umpire. Clubs need to communicate with the umpires allocated so they know

when and where they need to be so games can start on time and with the allocated officials

    present and ready to go.

  • 22

Umpire development needs to be an ongoing focus for clubs. The ‘DP Regulars’ aren’t getting

any younger and time will come when these ladies will start to step aside. Clubs need to help

develop umpires to continue in their place. Downey Park is a valuable learning environment

for developing umpires that can be overlooked for development when the young players

interested in umpiring play in turf competitions. With some support from the ‘regulars’ clubs

could develop new umpires. All senior grass divisions can have umpires being mentored on

games. Clubs can list their umpire development intentions on their umpire registers so

developing umpires can be allocated to suitable games along with the mentors e.g. if the

beginning umpire and mentor are not in the same team this will need timeslot co-ordination

which can be done with prior knowledge of who plays where.

I would like to thank the BWHA senior grass clubs, players and club umpire co-ordinators for

their support and flexibility to fulfil the Downey Park umpiring requirements each week.

    Recommendations:

    • Encourage the ‘DP regulars’ who umpire often on Saturday afternoons to find a friend/team mate/ club junior to shadow them on some of the games they umpire and look toward these shadows becoming umpires being mentored by the regulars during their normal allocation to develop some new umpires for Senior Grass.

    • Ensure clubs to continue to inform BWHA of umpire changes e.g. injuries or absences that affecting umpire availability during the season or umpire development intentions and requirements, so umpires can be allocated from the most up-to-date version of their umpire register to minimise changes needed once the draw is published.

    • Encourage clubs to look to using the senior grass competition at Downey Park as a supportive environment for junior / new umpire development.

    Judy Hartnett

COMPETITIONS: RECORDING & REPORTING (MATCH SECRETARY REPORT)

    TURF

Thanks again to team managers for their efforts in completing match records each week. Only

part of our system is computerised so the records are still checked manually each week to

ensure registrations are consistent with our rules. It is appreciated when managers complete

the match sheets properly as this makes checking of records so much easier.

    Vice President

Obtaining development approval for a synthetic surface at Downey Park continues to be a

challenge. We are still working with Council to obtain the necessary approvals.

    Christine Blanchard

  • 23

    GRASS

With the database being unreliable, match and player statistics were again checked manually.

Thank you to the managers and teams that correctly and neatly completed their match books

which made the job easy. Other managers or teams struggled each week, despite an example

located at the front of the match book. It was a tough season for some clubs. Being so long,

in some instances there were 21 fixture rounds, some clubs struggled to manage player

fitness. Any clubs that had barely enough players and relied exclusively on players from lower

teams to field a team each week need to seriously consider whether they have enough players

to field the teams they intend to nominate. Clubs need to check the table in the operations

manual when registering either turf, junior or masters players in the Downey Park teams to

ensure they are of the equivalent standard. If the player is outside the recommended level,

permission needs to be sought for them to play in that division.

    Lesley Bennett

    MASTERS

In 2019 the season started with the same number of teams as in 2018, however unfortunately

during the season the QUT MM1 team had to be withdrawn. This led to a slight decrease in

the number of teams participating. In total there was 24 teams playing at the end of the

season which was a decrease of 1 team in the MM4 competition when compared to 2018.

Across the 4 divisions of masters a total of 447 individual players participated during the

season. There was an increase to the number of times goalkeepers were used across clubs in

the same or different divisions throughout the season.

Thank you to all those who complete the match books each week. These books being written

in alphabetical order and easy to read makes the match secretary job so much easier.

    DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT

    REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (RDO)

2019 proved to be another busy – yet rewarding – season and was mixed with new challenges and perspectives in the development department. With the assistance of new staff members Kathryn Austen and Carol Chiu Chong, we were able to bring new initiatives to our processes and procedures, which I strongly believe will assist BWHA in improving our development and representative programs in the future. Junior members had access to a wide variety of clinics, workshops and representative opportunities. Starting with our U7 & U9’s, they had a mid-season Skills Day, the U11’s and U13’s had a revamped Development program which was well attended and plenty of school holiday clinics to be a part of. There were grass clinics – targeting field players and goal

  • 24

keepers – during our Saturday morning Downey Park fixtures which were well received. The April Goal Keeping clinics were also a hit, coached by some of the most talented Goal Keepers in Queensland. The U11’s continued with an information session for parents about our Representative Team Selection Processes, which has proven to be a vital part in improving our selection processes. The Junior Committee had a great initiative of the Junior Carnival Day, which we anticipate will be even better next season. U11 Southern Cross – all players, coaches, managers and umpires had a wonderful tournament and showed that BWHA has a bright future. As always, a huge thank you to the Staff, Junior Committee and parent volunteers for assisting on the day – it cannot be run so successfully without everyone’s support and effort on what is one of our busiest events. U11/1 – 1st in Division 1; U11/2 – 1st in Division 2; U11/3 – 3rd in Division 2; U11/4 – 1st in Division 3 U13 State Championships (& Southern Cross) – Our U13s travelled to Cairns and overall had a successful tournament – no doubt for many of these players, it would have been their first experience travelling that distance for a tournament. The Brisbane U13/1 team displayed an outstanding effort and were clear leaders in the competition. U13/1 – 1st in Division 1; U13/2 – 8th in Division 1; U13/3 – 3rd in Division 2; U13/4 – 6th in Division 2 U15 State Championships (& Southern Cross) – Our U15s travelled to Gladstone and showed us all how versatile they can be, playing many of their games on grass during the tournament. It was evident how resilient our girls can be through tough competition formats, and they continue to do BWHA proud. U15/1 – 1st in Division 1; U15/2 – 7th in Division 1; U15/3 – 2nd in Division 2; U15/4 – 5th in Division 2 U18 State Championships (& Southern Cross) – Our U18s went down the coast to Tweed Border and also showed their resilience with a challenging tournament with all types of weather and last minute draw changes, plus the added complication of travel logistics. Overall their spirits were high, and we’re reminded of what a tough task some of our managers experience at tournaments. U18/1 – 1st in Division 1; U18/2 – 10th in Division 1; U18/3 – 4th in Division 2; U18/4 – 6th in Division 2 I would like to acknowledge the volunteer selectors of each age group and highlight what an incredible job they do, in what is generally a thankless and scrutinised position. Your efforts are highly valued, and I hope to see you nominate again in the future. Another mention is required for all the team managers – the lengths they go to in ensuring each task is met to a high standard is incredible. We’re thankful for your time. Without volunteers in these positions, our representative teams would struggle to operate as

  • 25

smoothly as they do. BWHA is always seeking nominations from its members and willingly gives support to anyone who would be interested in filling one of these roles in 2020. Umpires were exposed to Introduction to Umpiring clinics, Turf & Grass Umpires Talks and the Umpire Mentor Workshop as well as many BWHA mentors out on the grounds. Many clubs took advantage of our services in regards to umpiring development and held Umpiring Development Clinics. We’re happy to state that 46 Umpires received new accreditations this season. We successfully ran three Level 1 Coach courses and one Level 2 Coach course and incorporated more development tools for our representative coaches. In 2020 we hope to expand in this space with more workshops for all coaches to access. We visited approximately 52 schools and showcased hockey to 4323 students. There were 11 Sporting Schools programs and 12 Hookin2Hockey programs. The Term 1 Hookin2Hockey programs were a great initiative, with many local clubs reaping the benefits of this recruitment tool. We’ll continue to do these programs in 2020, and we hope more local clubs become on board. We attended 13 Gala Days and were involved in 2 Inclusive Programs. In the off-season we will be planning what’s ahead for 2020 and revising programs in order to continually improve upon the previous season. I look forward to a busy 2020! Amy Ryan FACILITIES REPORT

Noala Gordon and John Robinson continue to work on maintaining and developing our facilities at Downey & Rasey Park. John works one day a week and Noala a couple of casual days each week as needed. During the season we had several break ins in a short space of time at Rasey Park which caused some disruption to the runnings of Rasey Park, measures have been taken to bulk up security at Rasey Park. We have had some delay in the building of the new field 10 toilet block that we received a grant for in 2018. More detail on this is in the General Managers report. Lisa Donaldson

    TOURS, UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT REPORT

2019 has been a huge year of learning in my first BWHA year. Thank you to Kath Proctor, Amy

Ryan, Kathryn Austen, Lisa Donaldson, BWHA Management and committees for your

    enormous help this year.

It was also an honour to meet a significant number of our representative players and their

families at uniform fittings this season.

Apparel sales were very strong this year with most representative players very honoured to

be able to wear their Brisbane apparel whilst on tour and in Brisbane. Thank you to our

continued suppliers, About You Promotions, Hot Lollie, Official Clothing and Atlas Sports for

their support and assistance as I transitioned into the role this year.

Thank you to all of our wonderful team Managers who came to Uniform Fittings to help

measure girls for Uniform fittings and help with Apparel sales. Your help was invaluable.

After many requests we are excited to be able to offer new items to complement our apparel

range. A soft brim visor, beanie and wide brim style hat will be added to the BWHA 2020

    range.

Uniform & Equipment– Sue Barsby has previously done a wonderful job of replacing the old

style uniforms and in 2020 all of our touring teams will be wearing the same uniform.

Uniforms will continue to be replaced as required due to wear and tear.

BWHA will discontinue the use of the Yellow Polo for our representative coach and managers

from 2020 and instead use the Cherry Polo’s. The Yellow Polo’s have proved to be difficult to

keep in good condition and are showing significant wear and tear. We will provide coaches

and managers who don’t already own one a shirt to keep. They will also be given a Lanyard

with their name, position held and tournament details to identify themselves whilst on tour.

Thank you to our representative players for looking after their uniform and to team managers

for their timely return for the next group of touring players to use.

We continue to ensure each touring team has training balls and markers for their use in

training and for their tournament. Thank you to every team for ensuring their safe return at

    the conclusion of their tournament.

Tours In 2019, BWHA sent 18 teams to a number of State Championships held in Cairns, Gladstone, Mackay and Tweed. We had 1 Super League team compete in Brisbane and 4 - U11 teams competed at the Southern Cross Carnival at Downey Park.

  • 27

An enormous thank you to all of our Selectors, Coaches, Managers, Tech Officials, Sports Trainers and Umpires for their hard work for all of these tournaments. The players wouldn’t be able to experience these amazing opportunities in a large part due to the support of these officials. Thank you to all of our Brisbane players this year for representing Brisbane to the best of their abilities. We hope you continue to strive to play the best hockey possible. Congratulations to those who made QLD Selections, shadows and those identified.
