Owen Sound Little Theatre (OSLT) is a registered, charitable institution formed in 1961.

Owen Sound Little Theatre’s mission is to be a quality theatre company that consistently entertains

and challenges while stimulating participation in the arts through dynamic artistic and cultural

programming with broad appeal.

The Roxy is the permanent home for the Owen Sound Little Theatre and a vibrant regional centre

for arts and culture. Of over 200 community theatre groups in Ontario, only 5% own and operate

their own facility without any municipal operational funding. Owen Sound Little Theatre is one of

these rare organizations. As a community theatre, OSLT is also ineligible for provincial and federal

funding for its own theatrical productions.

Welcome!

The 2012-2013 season was a memorable one for The Roxy,

with some 10,000 tickets sold for Owen Little Theatre

Productions alone! Anything Goes drew in the crowds with

an on-stage ocean liner and a live band safely stowed in a

life boat! Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun was an artistic

success, winning three awards at the Western Ontario

Drama League Festival. The Donnellys was a sensation, with

eight completely sold out shows and two visits from

playwright Peter Colley! And The Importance of Being

Earnest was chosen as a preferred event by the City of

Owen Sound for their volunteers.

In the past year, we also closed our 88 Key Campaign for

the purchase of our new grand piano. We are also on the

verge of a massive centennial renewal project for The Roxy

Theatre which will cement our role as the premiere arts

presenter in the region and key economic driver for Owen

Sound’s historic downtown.

Our audiences continue to grow, and we are meeting our

vision for artistic excellence and sustainability. We

continue to receive overwhelming support for our efforts

to increase and diversify programming, and none of this

would be possible without our supporters.

On behalf of OSLT, thank you for your consideration and

for playing such an important role in our achievements!

Sincerely,

Aly Boltman

Theatre Manager

OWEN SOUND LITTLE THEATRE’s

53rd ANNUAL PLAYBILL

The series begins with the blockbuster musical

Les Misérables. Directed by Pat O’Connor with musical

direction by Don Buchanan, Les Misérables tells the

story of Jean Valjean, who breaks parole after serving

19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. His story and that

of the vengeful policeman who pursues him, is

interwoven with Valjean’s adoption of an orphaned

child. Against the backdrop of the people’s revolution,

it is a tale of the soul’s capacity to transcend

unimaginable human suffering. Les Misérables runs

for 12 performances from November 6-23, 2013.

Start your 2014 calendar with our Calendar Girls, an

inspiring and true story directed by Corry Lapointe.

Extraordinary women from an ordinary Women’s

Institute spark a global phenomenon by posing for a

charity calendar. As interest snowballs, the Calendar

Girls reveal more than they’d ever planned! Calendar

Girls runs for seven performances from January 30-

February 8, 2014.

April welcomes Hobson’s Choice, a Victorian

suffragette comedy directed by Val Underwood.

Widower Mr. Hobson faces the problem of marrying

off his daughters, while wanting to retain their

services as housekeepers and sales ladies in his shoe

shop. His eldest daughter takes matters into her own

hands leading to a surprising, unforgettable outcome.

Hobson’s Choice runs for seven performances from

April 3-12, 2014.

Hit the road next spring with 18 Wheels directed by

Goldie Walma. Climb aboard a big rig and hold on to

your cowboy hats as you visit the landscape along the

Trans-Canada Highway. Experience ordinary work-a-

day Canadian life through extraordinary stories in this

country-themed mini-musical. 18 Wheels runs for

seven performances from May 28-June 7, 2014.

How do we benefit the community? What is the impact of arts and culture?

• The Roxy welcomes approximately 30,000 patrons through its doors each year, and brings significant financial

benefit to regional tourism, recreation, and retail industries. It is at the core of revitalization and citizen

engagement in downtown Owen Sound.

• The Roxy Theatre/Owen Sound Little Theatre brings the community together on a social and cultural level. It

unites people of all different racial and economic backgrounds, and creates an understanding and

commonality within diverse community groups.

• Culture-led place making “contributes to livability, economic revitalization, creative entrepreneurship, and

cultural industries.” Creative-place making efforts are “using art and culture to animate downtowns and

neighborhoods, to stoke their creative industries, to stabilize population and jobs, and to attract new

residents and businesses” to small and large communities, as per a 2012 Arts Research Monitor study by the

National Endowment for the Arts

• According to a recent study, The Value of Presenting: A Study of Arts Presentation in Canada, Canadians

believe that performing arts venues provide benefits such as improved quality of life (87% say moderate to

high importance), fostering a sense of community pride (87%), contributing to economic development (88%),

and greater community safety through increased activity at night (60%).

• Numerous long-term studies suggest that children who participate in theatre perform better in school,

regardless of their cultural or socio-economic background. Additionally, they experience increased

community awareness, social skills, cultural perspective, and artistic abilities, skills that help children learn to

function more responsibly within our communities as they become contributing members of our society.
