NOTES FROM OUR GARDENER, CARY GEORGEEarly Spring brings unique contrasts to ttre landscape of the Wildflower Garden

and Bird Sanctuary. Unlike the green lushness of May, April offers :nore subtle delightsagainst a background of browns and grays. Wild leek einerges. Maples and Ieatherwood.bloom before they leaf out. Skunk cabbage gives the still-frozen bog its first Spring bloom.Evergreen plants, such as mountain laurel, rhodcdendron and Christrnas fern remind usthroughout the winter of Spring and rebirlh.

Here are a tew of the Spring blocm dates " These dates reflect the bloosr time for.that species in the wamest microclimates, and nany of the same wildllowers bloorn weekslater elsewhere in the Gardeo:

False Rue Anemone ( l".p:fryl_lgj:Iggtu* )Blocdloct ( Sanguingrrls cagS9ensis )Sharp-lobed i-{epatica ( u"p:liSg_9:"ttlgtr )Snow Trillium ( Trillium nivale )American Hazelnut ( Cogylus ameri913g )White Trout Lily ( BrythroniuE albidum )Leatherwood ( Dirca palustris )Skunk Cabbage (_Eyepl""gpq:_19{ggS )

As of.4 / 2l / 88 no "Earliest Bloom" records have been broken.

On April 14 and 15 the prairie garden was burned. A controlled ourn has benefitsfor a prairie: it desEoys invasive woody plants ( e.g. raspberry, buckthoro, s.umac andhoneysuckl ; it retards gtowth of early season ;ron-ptairie grasses; aod it eliminates a

thick layer of thatch that inhibits the germination of new seedlings .

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued the b:rrning pemit. Nevertheless' theMinneapolis Fire Departrnent showed up to say a fire had been reported by office workers inthe IDS Building.

Ken Avery helped with the burn, and iris years of experience and expertise madeeveryol-re feel more secure burning under extremely dry conditioas. Thanks again, Ken.

I've also done some "spot" burning in the bog' in hopes ofcontrolling the spread cf canary reed grass, axlowleaftear-thumb, and red turtlehead.

On April 9I attended a seminar in Afton on control of ourthree major invasive plants: leafy spurge, buckthorn andpurple loosestrife. In a worst-case scenatio Eley couldtake over, respectively, our prairies, woodlands and wet-lauds. In 1987 purple loosestrife was declared a noxiousweed in Mionesota: the law states it can't be scld or trans-plan@d., and Iandowners must destrcy or control it' Mostencouraging: biological controls ( insects, bacteria, fungi )in corcert with genetic engineering offet the most environ-mentally safe, cost-effeclive and permanent means of keep-ing cut these three tenacious plants from native communities .

' Ask me about contrcl measures we use in ttre Garden.YOU MAY NOW WALK AROUND WITI'I OUR NEW GUIDEBOOK!If you find errors in it, please repor[ them, and they'll becorrected when the next printing appears - in 1990.

We are grateJul to our corporate neighbor, Prudential Insur-ance, for providing these guidebooks, which will help you

identify most of our plants, bushes and trees.
