Let us learn from the Virgin Mary how to be bolder in obeying
the Word of God. Pope Francis -December 8, 2014
O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
+ + + + + + + + Oh Maria sin pecado concebida, ruega por
Nosotros que recurrimos a Ti.
Last weekend, as I tried to deliver a homily at the 10:30 AM Mass, I noticed someone in the front row of the handicap section of Saint Joseph’s texting as I was attempting to preach. He contin-ued throughout the entire homily until I walked over to him and demand he stop before I begin the Consecration of the Eucharist. This is unaccepta-ble, and will not be tolerated in the future. Throughout the homily I lost my train of thought a number of times, which was obvious to those in attendance. This is very unfair to your priests and deacons who work very hard on homilies preached at Mass. Not to mention how disre-spectful it is to God, and those who have come to Mass to worship Him. Since this incident, I have been made aware by parishioners of both Saint Joseph’s and Our Lady of Good Counsel that this is an ongoing problem. Therefore, I am asking you, if you see someone texting or using their cell phone in church or dur-ing the celebration of Mass…demand they stop immediately. Speaking for myself, if I notice the use of a cell phone during Mass, I will pause, and publically ask you to stop such an offensive ac-tion. I find this is just sad. Yes, sad!! Sad, that there are some who think they are so important. Sad, there are people who can’t stay away from their cell phone for an hour a week to give time to God. Let’s pray this will no longer be a problem at Mass.
CHRISTMAS PLANT MEMORIALS Once again at Saint Joseph’s Parish, we are offering a Christmas Plant Memorial for your living and deceased relatives and friends. Suggested donations: $20 for a small; $25 for a medium; $35 for a large plant. Please CLEARLY print your name, donation amount and the name of the loved one to be remem-bered on a plain white envelope and mark it “CHRISTMAS PLANT.” Send it to the rectory or drop it into the Sunday collection basket. We will then place a plant on the altar for Christmas in memory of your loved one.
The tradition of anointing the sick with blessed oil is very old, but developed slowly and unevenly in the first eight centuries of the church’s life. St. Augustine, who wrote volumes of homilies from his thriving church in North Africa, plus pastoral directives, letters, and memoirs, never mentions it at all. We know from an-cient prayers that it did happen in Rome, Mi-lan, Gaul, and the British Isles. In Rome the bishop blessed the oil of the sick, but it could be applied by a priest, deacon, or a layperson. It seems that sick persons could even anoint themselves. St. Genevieve of Paris was known for anointing the sick in her care. Perhaps inevitably, complaints of abuses, and even trickery by sorcerers, brought an end to this consoling practice. In a dangerous world with a dispersed population, clerics may have preferred that this hands-on care was a lay privilege. The purpose of anointing, how-ever, was not simply healing, but forgiveness of sin and an experience of saving power of Christ. By the year 800, dioceses everywhere were organizing rituals for priestly anointing. Although anointing of the sick is reserved to priests today, perhaps this treasured memory will enrich the future of the sacrament. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Third Sunday of Advent Tercer Domingo de Adviento
MORE THAN DISCIPLES Each of today’s four scriptural roles—disciple, prophet, apostle, herald—forms a facet of our life in Christ as we live it day by day. Isaiah tells us that a prophet is anointed, as we were anointed at our baptism in water and the Spirit, to bring glad tidings and to promote God’s reign of heal-ing, justice, and peace. An apostle, like Paul, is one who is “sent.” Each of us, in his or her own way, is sent by Christ to be a voice of rejoicing, to encourage prophetic voices in the world, and to make sure that the work of the Spirit thrives. John the Baptist shows us the job of the herald, making the Lord’s way straight, announcing the coming of the Light of the world. Today we also hear from Mary, model disci-ple. Her song, the Magnificat, shows us the world we must believe in and work for: one in which God is praised, where God’s favor is bestowed on the humble, where the hungry are filled and the rich are sent away emp-ty, a world that continues to know and rejoice in the mercy of God that lasts for all ages. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
