Polio Plus Drive39% of the way to goal, and a long way to go!

Our goal is $3,500 this year, which is matched $2 for every $1 donated by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, for a total of $10,500 towards polio eradication. Our timeline is between now and June 30, 2014 (President John’s term). See John for details.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE CONTINUED...

Any day following rain in the Southwest shows the vibrancy of the flowers surrounding the Montecito Country Club; thus another beautiful day on the hill overlooking Montecito. Karen led off with an invocation and flag salute followed by three verses of "Mack the Knife" led by Del in honor of our speaker Ron Bamieh; more on this old song in the SIDE BAR of this edition of AXIS. We were glad to welcome several guests, which makes Lynda glad as we continue to make progress on our membership goals; remember to invite your friends and colleagues to join us on Tuesdays.

Several Happy Bucks received: Harlan celebrating the new Federal Reserve Board Chair, Janet Yellen who is also the first woman to head to Fed. Harlan believes the Fed will maintain low interest rates through the end of this year...stay tuned! Chris Devries has been spotted "bus side" throughout town as part of her career with Union Bank. This led to a lively discussion on what an appropriate fine should be... number of buses with Chris' picture, number of routes, number of Rotarians riding the bus with Chris' picture on it... it was looking expensive for Chris. Thank you for paying up!

We also received via Ross two checks from "Andy" Anderson, Past President of RCoM (1969-70) and the first Montecito District Governor of District 5240. He continues to receive a weekly dose of our club news via AXIS. One check goes for Polio Plus and one check goes for club operations. Very much appreciated!

Ross then provided an update on the Rotaract Charter event held last Tuesday evening. The event was very well attended and the Rotaract Club has twenty plus members, a great leadership team, and lots of activities on their calendar. Rotaract will share many events and opportunities for service with our Club and vice versa. Well done and thank you Robert on initiating this process!

We touched on the great input received for “One good rzzzeason for being a Rotarian” and have included the full list in this AXIS for your reading pleasure. In the method of David Letterman, let's start from the bottom: "10. To be able to take advantage of the true "family" of Rotary while traveling nationally and internationally." More to follow on Membership, the Ignite Report, and an upcoming New Member Breakfast. Speaking of travel, our friend and fellow Rotarian-to-be, Lew Stone headed off to Kauai with the last of our Club Banners. This allowed us to segue to a discussion on Club Banners both as our ABC of Rotary for the day and to the discussion of "what do we want our Club banner to look like"? Various suggestions were fielded from the floor and I believe Chris Devries offered to run a short competition for banner ideas... more to follow on this!

Our program today was introduced by Kurt Koenig, who has known Ron Bamieh for a long time... more than 20 years. Ron is a Partner with his own firm in Ventura and with service in the Ventura District Attorney’s office and Department of Justice. The program titled

"Chasing Evil... The Road to a Murder Conviction" was well titled and to the point. Much was learned from our fellow Rotarian from Ventura on the death penalty (pros and cons), specifics on a "cold case" (People versus Justin Merriman), a short history of the death penalty in California, who's on death row today, requirements for the death penalty

John and Speaker, Ron Bamieh ("special circumstances" required), what makes you eligible as a jury member to sit on a jury for a trial considering the death penalty,

specifics to the Justin Merriman case and what persistence it took to effect a conviction, and is the death penalty a law without purpose? Ron delivered a fascinating talk on a matter that effects society and all of us.

What is the ultimate lesson? Bad choices by victims can lead to bad results...while it is not their fault, victims can pay the ultimate price for bad decisions.

Additionally, see the attached article from the February 5, 2014 edition of the SB News Press on "Winters Sale" for the auction of Jonathan Winters estate... with proceeds to the Teddy Bear Foundation headed by one of our own, Jim Bechtel.

What neighborhood in Santa Barbara (city limits) has the highest crime rate?

By checking "www.spotcrime.com" (which compiles a map with the current Santa Barbara police blotter) we see that Lower State Street between Hwy 101 and Anapamu has the highest incidence of arrests, arson, assault, burglary, robbery, shooting, theft, vandalism, and "other" crime. While this does not come as a surprise to our locals... this is news you can use! Again, be aware of your surroundings and don't position yourself to be a victim.

The draw for the 2014 AFL Season has been published and we have a first, a Thursday night match at the famous Sydney Cricket Ground where the fabulous Sydney Swans will play the famous Geelong Cats from Victoria. Projects are planned with DG Jack’s attendance at the D4160 District Conference. Last year, about 20 of us accompanied the DG, bringing successful projects to distribute solar lights, fabricate reading glasses and work on a school. Homestays are being arranged. Volunteers are needed, so bring along your family and friends.

It was 109 years ago this month that Paul Harris and three of his friends founded the first Rotary club. His goal was simple: to create an oasis of friendship amid a city of strangers, with those who shared his values.

Over time, the philosophy of Rotary developed and matured, and Rotarian ideals expanded to include service, vocational ethics, and international understanding. As Rotary grew and spread, Paul Harris envisioned a world in which conflict would ultimately melt away – a world where personal connections and acceptance of differences would relegate war to history. If people could only come together in a spirit of friendship and tolerance, he felt, they would soon realize how much they had in common.

Paul Harris was fortunate in his lifetime to see the Rotary idea take hold and establish itself in dozens of countries around the world. Every week, in 34,000 communities, his vision lives on in every Rotary club meeting. But nowhere in the world does Paul Harris' vision take life as vividly as it does at our annual Rotary International convention.

At a convention, for a few short days, we see the world as Paul Harris imagined it: a world where men and women from every corner of the globe come together, to build peace, to serve others, and simply to enjoy one another's company. Differences of background, politics, culture, and religion are woven together, all part of one bright tapestry. It is an unforgettable experience, one that Jetta and I look forward to every year. Every convention is different, and every one becomes a memory that we cherish.

This year, I will have the tremendous privilege of presiding over the 105th Rotary International Convention in Sydney, 1-4 June. Sydney is a vibrant international hub, a gateway between East and West, and a wonderfully appropriate city to host a Rotary convention. It is tremendously diverse, rich in culture and history, and one of my favorite cities to visit; at once exciting and relaxed, it is a place where I know I will always feel at home – and always find something new to see and do.

In 2014, Rotary members will gather to say G'day from Sydney. We will come together as friends and Rotarians, to reach out to the world and to one another, in an environment where all are welcome. I hope you will join us as we celebrate our successes, look to the future, and discover new ways to Engage Rotary, Change Lives.
