We carry a complete line of Industrial Coatings along with all
the tools and equipment you will need to get your job done
right. We have a trained staff to provide you with a detailed
specification and a standard operating procedure for your
protective coating needs.
Why prime?
Metal primers serve two essential purposes:
1. Provide an essential layer of protection against corrosion.
2. Improve the finished appearance of a project by providing a smooth foundation for the finish coat.
Metal Primers protect metal from the detrimental effects of metal corrosion by two means:
1. Barrier protection.
Lower-cost metal primers (shop primers) form a continuous film that, along with the finish coat, prevent the contact of moisture and oxygen with the metal.
2. Corrosion and rust inhibition.
The best types of metal primers deliver barrier protection that is enhanced by corrosion inhibitors and rust inhibitive pigments to increase the performance and protective characteristics.
How to select a metal primer to meet your needs:
If your primary goal is to provide years of metal protection and ensure long life of the finish coat, select a corrosion and rust -inhibitive primer.
If price is the over-riding consideration and long-term product performance is secondary, a shop primer will provide adequate

How does metal corrosion occur?Simply stated, rust is formed and
metal corrosion begins when moisture and oxygen combine to
attack the metal surface.

Industrial Finish Coats
Industrial Finish Coats
When selecting a finish coat, it is very important
to consider both the coating application and the
service environment the finished item will be
placed in.
Enamels
Enamels are single-component coatings that
can be solvent-based or water-based.
• If a quick return-to-service is essential to your project, choose a quick drying coating.
• For projects where a more conventional dry time is acceptable, you gain added durability and performance with slower drying, higher- solids enamel products.
• When the application method must be by brush or roller, the slower drying enamels will give a better finish.
• In a non-corrosive environment where appear- ance is very important, enamels can be very easy to touch-up.
• Enamels are very user-friendly: no multiple components and exotic thinners need to be mixed together. No working pot-life times are a concern.

Epoxy / Urethane Finish Coats/Water Based Epoxy
Epoxies /Urethanes/Water Based Epoxy
Choose from a variety of epoxies and urethanes
designed for a wide range of applications requiring
excellent durability and performance, including
food processing plants, water treatment plants,
power-generating plants, marine service and much
more. For more information, please refer to our
data pages, call 1-800-452-2315 or visit our
website at www.roddapaint.com.
Epoxies and Urethanes:
Epoxies and Urethanes are two-part coatings
consisting of an A (Base) and B (activator)
component. Epoxies are available in both
water-based and solvent-based versions; most
urethanes are solvent-based. These coatings
provide superior film hardness and chemical
resistance as compared to enamels.
• Epoxies are resistant to many chemical compounds and are much more moisture tolerant than enamel products.
• Epoxies are primarily for interior applications as they tend to lose color and gloss when exposed to the sun light.
• Urethanes are frequently used as a finish coat over a primer or intermediate coat of epoxy and have excellent chemical resistance and color and gloss retention.
• An epoxy / urethane system provides the best combination of chemical resistance and exterior weatherability.
“Pot-Life” of two-part coatings.
After mixing the A and B components
together, these products have a limited pot
life - the period during which they must be
applied to the surface. Material that is
mixed but not applied during the specified
pot life period must not be used. Freshly
catalyzed coating should never be added to
coating nearing the end of it’s pot-life, as
this will shorten batch pot-life greatly.

* Dry times will vary depending on air and surface temperature, humidity and wet film thickness. Stated times assume 77º and 50% relative humidity during and following application.**Theoretical coverage per gallon, per coat, when applied to a smooth surface at recommended film thickness. No allowance is made for material loss during mixing or application. When calculating amount of product needed, a good generic rule of thumb is to allow for surface irregularities, surface absorption, and losses during mixing and application.

Surface Preparation StandardsYou should always designate the degree of surface preparation required for the materials you are using. The basic standards for preparing metal substrates are a joint effort between the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers International (NACE).
SSPC-SP1 Solvent CleaningRemoval of all visible oil, grease, soil, drawing and cutting compounds, and other soluble contaminants from steel surfaces with solvent, vapor, cleaning compound, alkali, emulsifying agent, or steam.
SSPC-SP2 Hand Tool CleaningRemoves all loose mill scale, loose rust, loose paint, and other loose detrimental foreign matter by hand chipping, scraping, sanding, and wire brushing.
SSPC-SP3 Power Tool CleaningRemoves all loose mill scale, loose rust, loose paint, and other loose detrimental foreign matter by power wire brushing, power sanding, power grinding, power tool chipping, and power tool descaling.
SSPC-SP5 / NACE 1 White Metal Blast Clean-ingWhen viewed without magnification, the surface shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dust, dirt, mill scale, rust, coating, oxides, corrosion products and other foreign matter.
SSPC-SP6 / NACE 3 Commercial Blast Clean-ingWhen viewed without magnification, the surface shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dust, dirt, mill scale, rust, coating, oxides, corrosion products and other foreign matter of at least 66-2/3% of unit area, which shall be a square 3 in. x 3 in. (9 sq. in.). Light shadows, slight streaks, or minor discolor-ations caused by stains of rust, stains of mill scale, or stains of previously applied coating in less than 33-1/3% of the unit area is acceptable.
SSPC-SP7 / NACE 4 Brush-Off Blast Clean-ing
mill scale, loose rust, and loose coating. Tightly adherent mill scale, rust, and coating may remain on the surface. Mill scale, rust, and coating are consid-ered tightly adherent if they cannot be removed by lifting with a dull putty knife.
SSPC-SP10 / NACE 2 Near-White Blast Clean-ingWhen viewed without magnification shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dust, dirt, mill scale, rust, coating, oxides, corrosion products and other foreign matter of at least 95% of each unit area. Staining shall be limited to no more than 5 percent of each unit area, and may consist of light shadows, slight streaks, or minor discolorations caused by stains of rust, stains of mill scale, or stains of previously applied coatings. Unit area shall be approximately 3 in. x 3 in. (9 sq. in.).
SSPC-SP11 Power Tool Cleaning to Bare MetalWhen viewed without magnification, the surface shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dirt, dust, mill scale, rust, paint, oxides, corrosion products, and other foreign matter. Slight residues of rust and paint may be left in the lower portion of pits if the original surface is pitted. The surface profile shall not be less than 1 mil (25 microns).
SSPC-SP12 / NACE 5 Surface Preparation and Cleaning of Steel and Other Hard Materi-als by High- and Ultra High- Pressure Water Jetting Prior to re-coatingThis standard requires water jetting at high- or ultra high-pressure to prepare a surface for re coating using pressure above 10,000 psi. Water jetting will not produce a profile; rather, it exposes the original abrasive-blasted surface profile. Water jetting shall be performed to meet four conditions: WJ-1, WJ-2, WJ-3, and WJ-4, and a minimum acceptable surface shall have all loose rust, loose mill scale, and loose coatings uniformly removed.

Surface Preparation Standards (continued)
SSPC-SP13 / NACE 6 Surface Preparation of ConcreteProvides requirements for surface preparation of concrete by mechanical, chemical, or thermal meth-ods prior to the application of bonded protective coating or lining systems.
SSPC-SP14 / NACE 8 Industrial Blast Clean-ingRemoval of all visible oil, grease, dust and dirt, when viewed without magnification. Traces of tightly adherent mil scale, rust, and coating residues are permitted to remain on 10% of each unit area of the surface if they are evenly distributed. Shadows, streaks, and discoloration caused by stains of rust, stains of mill scale, and stains of previously applied coating may be present on the remainder of the surface.
